REMNANTS FROM IRMA

A REFLECTION ON THE CYCLE OF LIFE
Hurricane Irma hit Southwest Florida on Sunday, September 10th, 2017
My reason for this project was a direct correlation between the intensity of the event and the intensity of my determination to understand what had happened. How had our world been so violently turned upside down?
I started to collect small woven fragments of brown dehydrated tree bark. After photographing and manipulating digitally, I realized this found object represented more than the intrinsic value I was drawn to. It became a symbol of hope and healing.
It was extremely cathartic for me to go from the wreckage my eyes saw to the unexpected beauty it had become. These artifacts were trying to tell me a story.
This newly sculpted yet battered world had manifested woven abstractions that were perfect in their imperfection. A new pattern of life emerged.
Scratchy shrubs by the roadside had completely vanished, exposing raw muddy paths leading to bright green lustrous secret gardens.
After dozens of walks and hundreds of photographs, the result is “Remnants from Irma”. A reflection of the cycle of life.
There are over forty images available in the “Remnants from Irma” series.
