he busiest travel days of the year are upon us which comes as no surprise to those of you trying to book flights during the holidays. As you know the technology on how to book a flight reservation is constantly evolving and I am happy to announce that Cape Air is taking a step towards simplifying our on-line booking process with our new Passenger Service System. Used by over one-hundred airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways and Southwest Airlines, Amadeus is the world’s largest provider of airline reservation services. Our new booking system will evolve over the next few months so we ask for your patience and remind you that Cape Air’s reservation agents are standing by at 800-cape-air. You can talk to a real person at no extra charge. For those of you in any one of a dozen Cape Air cities, you can take our personal service a step further by dropping in at one of our City Ticket Offices and meet with us the oldfashioned way, face to face. You can find Cape Air’s 25th Anniversary Celebration a complete list for our City Ticket Offices at capeair.com/book_flights/ibe_make_reservations.html In other news, in 1996 Cape Air extended ownership of our company to our employees by forming an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Think like an Owner became an important part of our service to you. Front-line employees are empowered to make decisions on your behalf to ensure you receive the highest level of service. We have grown quite a bit in the past twenty-five years and I am happy to say that in 2015 we intend to extend the ESOP to our entire employee group, now numbering 1,000 hard-working men and women. What that means for you the customer is more than 25 percent of Cape Air is owned by the great folks who work here. Our New Year’s resolution for 2015—Cape Air’s singular MOCHA HAGoTDI* brand of customer service will be better than ever! All good things for all of us in 2015!

hen St. John’s Janet and Steve Simonsen reach out with, “We may have a cover idea,” we pay attention. An award-winning photographer, famed for his underwater camera prowess, Steve makes magic behind the lens. “We have a world champion synchronized swimmer who performs with Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas,” emailed his wife Janet. Since there is no Cape Air service in Las Vegas we were somewhat baffled on the connection until the shot Our cover model Kanako Kitao at Hawksnest Bay, St. John arrived and it literally took our breath away – the stunning Kanako Kitao in the crystalline waters of St. John’s Hawksnest Bay. The Virgin Islands are popular Cape Air destinations and in this issue a few tips on where to stay and play in both the U.S. and the British Virgin Islands, including villa rental tips from the experts who say, “Yes, it is okay to price haggle.” If you’re after a Currier and Ives style holiday, check out the lineup in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Or take to the Adirondacks with writer/photographer Sally Brophy, who brings us to Saranac Lake, home of the famed Winter Carnival and to nearby Lake Placid where you can step in the Miracle on Ice arena and relive America’s Cold War hockey triumph. The Cape Air destination of Cape Girardeau, Missouri is the location “Don we now our gay apparel” takes on new for the block buster, “Gone Girl,” shot almost entirely on location. Can tours of the Cape Girardeau film locations be far behind? meaning in Provincetown where the traditional mixes with the decidedly non-traditional, as in a holiday cookie swap and Speedo race. Finally Cape Air’s Boston hub serves a number of cities across New England, plus Saranac Lake and Albany, New York. Check out the holiday happenings in Massachusetts’ capital city, including a production of the endearing chestnut, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Tis the Season!

aranac Lake and Lake Placid, NY are an outdoor enthusiast’s dream adventure. The air is fresh and crisp here and a lot cooler than it is in much of the rest of the eastern United States. The Village of Saranac Lake has authentic charm with storefronts from another century that house intriguing shopping, dining and entertainment adventures. We stopped by the Blue Moon Cafe for a seafood quesadilla and a Nada Burger with a promise to return later to try the local beer. Once fortified, taking advantage

Hiking Mount Baker, Saranac Lake
Several locals pointed us toward Mount Baker as a fun easy hike. People who live here are hardy, and it turns out that an easy hike means you’ll need your whole body to get over some of the spots. The summit is less than a mile and worth the effort, as you get a complete view of Saranac Lake Village nestled around Lake Flower and encircled by mountains.
14
Once back in the village we went off the beaten path to find Moose Maple Books in search of a book on Adirondack history. Their eclectic collection includes details on Saranac Lake as the pioneering health resort, the annual Winter Carnival and much more. Hungry again, folks recommended we try the Left Bank Café just down the street, and in a few steps it felt like we were dining along a river in France. We started with oven-baked Camembert, followed by seared scallops with lemon couscous and asparagus. And, of course, we couldn’t resist a finale of vanilla bean crème brulée.

After that feast it was time to put our feet up in a cozy retreat at the Kiwassa Lake B&B. While only 10 minutes from the village, it feels like miles away as you wind down the road past thick evergreen forests to reach the lakeside cabins. The decor is exactly what you’d expect in an Adirondack adventure – rustic, cozy charm with birch bark and pine abounding. If our room was any closer to the water we would have been swimming in our sleep. Guests have access to canoes, rowboats and kayaks to explore the quiet, pristine lake. In the morning we were roused by the smell of fresh coffee brewing and a German apple pancake baking in the oven.

One of the most memorable moments in Olympic history – the 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid Photos: Sally Brophy The Lake Placid Olympic Center
Fortified by home cooking and a quiet morning listening to loons on the lake, we headed east to nearby Lake Placid. While famous as the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid is a pleasure to visit any time of year. This winter World Cup racing returns to the area with events in the bobsled, luge and skeleton. The Olympic Center includes three ice surfaces, a new convention space, and the Olympic Museum. One of the most famous Olympic moments, the “Miracle on Ice”, took place here when despite overwhelming odds the U.S. men’s hockey team beat the U.S.S.R. and won Olympic gold. The Olympic Jumping Complex tour includes a chance to take an elevator ride to the top of the 26-story Olympic Ski Jump. Just seeing these structures from a distance was enough to show me how brave and crazy ski jumpers have to be. Extreme athletes abound here, but there’s plenty of room for more leisurely sports with numerous golf courses including the Whiteface Club & Resort. If you don’t have time for 18 holes, it’s a beautiful setting to enjoy a glass of wine or a hearty meal by one of the many fireplaces with expansive views.

The Village of Lake Placid offers shopping options from funky to upscale with views across Mirror Lake just across the street. Pan Dolce is a great choice for casual dining; I enjoyed a thick minestrone soup and Portobello Mushroom Panini, and then strolled down the street to the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa. While they are famous for the Maple Sugar Body Scrub, my muscles were sore from hiking Whiteface Mountain and I was happy for a soak in the whirlpool and a deep tissue massage. I had plenty of time afterwards to enjoy a gentle sunset above the mountains as I walked down Main Street to the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort. The first resort in the U.S. to receive Audubon International’s Platinum Eco Rating, it includes a green rooftop which provides fresh herbs to their restaurant Generations. All of the ingredients used are as local and fresh as possible, and they also have an excellent selection of organic wines and local beers.

hristmas by the Sea festival, holiday fairs and a not-soserious toboggan race –if you are looking for an old-fashioned Currier and Ives Christmas with an occasional zany twist, then Maine’s Penobscot Bay area by way of Cape Air’s flights between Boston and Rockland is a grand choice.
26
A Maine holiday tradition for more than a quarter century, Christmas by the Sea in Camden, Rockport and Lincolnville happens the first weekend in December and is the perfect kick to get you in a holiday frame of mind. Events include the arrival by lobster boat of Santa and his trusty elf friend, Ellen. Ellen? “She is actually Mrs. Claus,” says Alicia Bagnall, director of events at the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We take pride in the fact that for the past quarter century this is the only Mr. and Mrs. Claus we have ever known. Santa and the missus stay quite busy meandering around and meeting the kids before leaving for the North Pole. We have visitors coming to the area every year just to enjoy this special weekend which begins with a small but colorful parade on Friday night.”

Other events include the tree lighting, a reading of The Night Before Christmas at the Camden Library, the Lincolnville community bonfire and an open door celebration at the various shops. “Many of the stores feature progressive sales.” says Ms. Bagnall, “The later your shop, the steeper the discounts.” A highlight is a forty year Camden tradition, the star lighting on Camden’s Mount Battie above Camden Hills State Park on Thanksgiving night. A week earlier than the Christmas by the Sea events, the lighting actually sets the stage for Rockland’s weekend of festivities, including the building of the Lobster Trap Tree as well as the Festival of Lights sponsored by Rockland Main Street.

hen you own boasting rights to the largest lobster fisheries in the United States, it makes perfect sense that your holiday celebration pays homage to the tasty crustacean. “We have the largest lobster pot tree in the world,” says with pride by Gordon Page, executive director of Rockland Main Street. “Lobstering and the working waterfront is Rockland’s heritage and what makes our community authentic and salty.” Construction of the 35-foot tree involves strategic placement of 152 lobster traps by a corps of volunteers including members of the United States Coast Guard, the fire department, business owners and, of course, Rockland’s lobstermen and women. The lights go on the Friday after Thanksgiving, when the city officially launches Rockland’s Festival of Lights celebration. A night time parade, Santa appearances and special sales happen all over Main Street, which according to Parade Magazine, is worthy of a visit any time of year. “To be included in Parade’s ‘Sweet Sixteen’ list as one of the ‘Best Main Streets in America’ is a huge honor,” says Mr. Page. “A lot of people have worked hard to revitalize the downtown district. The storefronts are almost all full, our restaurants have made us a foodie destination and with the Farnsworth Museum and twenty-plus galleries along Main Street, we are recognized as the commercial art center for the state of Maine.” mainedreamvacation.com 152 Lobster Traps – Rockland’s Main Street

like to think when Irving Berlin wrote those lyrics for 1948’s Easter Parade he had Bar Harbor in mind, for in the late 1800s the Maine seaside town was THE haven for America’s ‘swells.’ The Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Carnegies and many other Captains of Industry built magnificent ‘cottages’ to escape the city, paving the way for the Bar Harbor vacation experience we enjoy today. In fact, some of those former mansions are now elegant B&Bs open to all budgets. One can only imagine what those moneyed folks would think of the hundreds of pajama-clad runners rolling beds down Main Street for what the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce describes as “the silliest tradition” in Downeast Maine. An early bird’s delight, the event, co-sponsored by Cape Air, begins at 6:00 am on November 8th and for the next two hours shoppers can take advantage of dramatic discounts. Wear pajamas and the sales get even better. The annual Early Bird Pajama Sale is a great way to take advantage of Bar Harbor’s eclectic shops, offering one-of-a-kind gifts. Then, at 10:00 am, the Bed and Pajama Parade winds its way down Main Street, followed by the Bed Races at 10:15 am.

kids for our tree lighting and we turned our ‘Y’ into a winter wonderland,” says Jennifer Wright of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “It is a magical setting with garlands, lights, and a live Nativity scene and of course, the chance to visit with Santa.” Before, during or after the holidays Ms. Wright urges visitors to take advantage of nearby Acadia National Park. “When was the last time you had a National Park almost to yourself? The park is open yearround and you are apt to be the only ones on your hiking trail or carriage roads. There are groomed areas perfect for crosscountry skiing, snowmobiles and dog sledding,” Ms. Wright added. Find lots more on holidays and winter fun at barharborinfo.com

John Masefield, Sea Fever
asefield’s famous lines come to mind as you meander around the little towns that make up Maine’s Blue Hill Peninsula. A bustling port during the sea faring days of the mideighteenth-century, Blue Hill was one of America’s major ship building areas and that rich maritime history is found in a number of historical sites in the towns of Blue Hill, Brooklin and Castine. This tucked away corner of Maine is about a forty-five minute drive from your Cape Air arrival in Bar Harbor. Instead of traveling to the left, go right and it is an easy ride to some delightful attractions including cozy B&B’s and a number or fascinating shops. Off the beaten path, but well worth the visit, this is a relatively quiet but visually stunning area that has long attracted writers, artists and musicians. Name drops here—Blue Hill luminaries include Noel Paul Stookey of the greatest folk trio of all time, Peter, Paul and Mary. Still performing, you may just see him on a Blue Hill stage. Another resident is a writer that we all probably enjoyed at one time, the late E.B. White who wrote about animal adventures in his family farm in the town of Brooklin. The book went on to become a children’s classic, Charlotte’s Web. Members of Mr. White’s family still reside in the area. Do a little pre-homework for your visit with the folks at bluehillpeninsula.org and fly Cape Air from Boston to Bar Harbor where you can rent a car at the airport and be on your way to a Blue Hill adventure.

Everyone shows up for the Nantucket ‘Stroll’
T
By Michelle Haynes he magic of the holidays is out in force some thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod. By plane and boat they come to the often fog enshrouded island of Nantucket by the thousands, and we do mean literally thousands, for holiday revelry that matches and even surpasses anything you’ll find on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. Main Street’s cobblestones glow from the lights of 150 Christmas trees lining the downtown area and the shops outdo each other with decorated window displays. The official Nantucket Christmas Stroll happens December 5th to 7th with nearly nonstop events. Great fun, but if you opt for smaller

crowds, plan on another time in December for the festive atmosphere continues thru New Year’s with a special Home for the Holidays weekend on the 13th when the island’s restaurants and inns have a number of specials going on. Arrive midweek and you get an even better deal on inn rates. nantucketchamber.org

t the 2014 Nantucket Wine Festival, producers from across the globe gathered to share their wines, all hoping to make a splash and leave lasting impressions. Among the tables one producer stood out – his lineup of highly rated wines was poured from a box. Andegavia founder Gavin Macomber combines

his entrepreneurial background in e-commerce and technology with a longtime passion for fine wines. Andegavia, the name stemming from one of the original wine regions in the Loire Valley in France, is an innovative blend of all three. Andegavia launched three new wines this fall: a 2013 Russian River Pinot Noir, a Pinot and Merlot Blend from Napa, and a Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Shipping direct gives Andegavia an edge, but they’re also emerging in high end wine stores on Nantucket. With 100 percent recyclable packaging, Andegavia is also on trend at a time when cask wines account for a third of the European market. “From the way wines are made to packaging and distribution, we are seeing a burst of innovation in an industry that has not changed much,” says Mr. Macomber, who is bringing his ‘disruptive mindset’ to future projects, causing the wine industry to swirl. Next up is a stainless steel wine-on-tap appliance for the home, the CounterCask, set to launch in 2015. For centuries people have debated the merits of wines from along the right bank and the left bank along the three rivers of Bordeaux. When it comes to innovation, Andegavia is simply money in the bank, or the box. A holiday gift idea for distant wine lovers – Andegavia currently ships to 35 states. andegavia.com

Good times at Nantucket’s The Proprietors Bar and Table
Proprietors Chef Tom Berry

igre Doux, Kohlrabi and Joppiesaus are food ingredients that would have baffled me a year ago. The Proprietors Bar and Table is named after the first ten landowners who settled on the island of Nantucket and is a collaborative effort between partners Tom Berry, former chef at Great Harbor Yacht Club, and Michael LaScola and Orla Murphy-LaScola, owners of American Seasons. Big on working with small producers, Orla’s passion for wine and Tom’s passion for flavorful, off-the-beaten-path ingredients brings a one of a kind take to the Nantucket dining experience, melding surprising – even eyebrow raising – food flavor combinations like Pastry Chef Liz O’Connell’s Weird Ice Cream, a frozen concoction with corn, blueberry, sriracha and pineapple. Chef Tom uses local ingredients in a globally creative way. A large section of the menu is cooked on the ‘plancha,’ a Spanish style griddle. Dishes you can’t help but crave include Halloumi Cheese with Eggplant Puree, Orange Honey Blossom and Crispy
50
Plancha Cooked Apalachicola Shrimp with Garlicky Green Sauce
Chickpeas, the Apalachicola Shrimp with Garlicky Green Sauce, Chili Threads and Corn Nuts, and the Shaved Pork-Umms: Berkshire Pork, Scallion, and Sesame BBQ in a Kimchee Biscuit. Chef Tom is inspired by a range of things, from his own travels to the changing of the seasons, and most recently, a song he heard on the radio from which the Cuchifritos dish evolved: Pork Riblets, Sweet Chili Mojo, Cheesy Masa Fries, and Annatto. As someone who roams the globe six months a year, I’m reminded of the reasons I travel and the adventures I am yet to experience as I experience the chef’s flavors of the world. You may have to lean a little harder on your server to find the food’s origin, harkening back to Nantucket’s past when whalers brought back tales, knick knacks and ingredients from exotic ports. Each plate tells a story in itself, an epicurean delight to sail about. The Proprietors is open through New Year’s and make reservations right now for their celebratory closing bash. proprietorsnantucket.com

Heather Jernegan, the enthusiastic founder and designer of the Not for Navigation pillows and tote bags, says custom work, tailored to the customer, is what they are all about. “We really love the custom nature of the maps and charts. They tell a story and evoke a memory. Much of my life experiences and happiness have come from visiting a new or familiar place, and the memories of that moment and who I was with at that location are what makes the charts and maps special to me. As I’m creating these pieces for my customers, it warms my heart that it will bring joy to someone when they see it.” In some cases the pillows can be customized to a street address, town, mountain, or river. “Add a heart or star on the pillow of a favorite spot,” says Ms. Jernegan, “if our customer wants to mark a special place we can place a star or heart to identify it.” Pillows start at $85 and tote bags at $80. notfornavigation.com

By Margaret Carroll-Bergman, The Trustees of Reservations hether you are visiting the Vineyard for the day or live on-island yearround, on Saturday, November, 29th you are invited to join The Trustees of Reservations to celebrate the rich history of Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury. This is a day of family fun, including a rather unique scavenger hunt, where you can follow in the footsteps of the early 1900s Tisbury Pond Club members, who mostly hunted for water fowl, only you will be searching for duck blinds and hidden decoys!
In the 1970s, Long Point Wildlife Refuge was in transition between an exclusive hunting club and a place open to all. At more than 600 acres, Long Point is one of the largest publicly accessible properties on Martha’s Vineyard. The fact that it encompasses beach, dune, and woodland makes the reservation even more attractive, environmentally and recreationally. The property is also an off-season treasure, especially for birders and other nature-watchers.

Taking Boston’s theater scene to the Limitz
Paul Newman, 1981
D
Paul Newman, 1981
By Gayle Fee on’t call Sid Limitz a stage door Johnny. The Milton photographer has been wooing actresses, but only so he can take their pictures and he’s amassed an amazing collection of nearly 800,000 images of the actors, actresses, singers, dancers and musicians who passed through the city’s playhouses over the past four decades. “I always have a camera,” Limitz said. “A lot of times, if I like the cast, I would set up a slide show in the Green Room, bring in refreshments and show them the pictures I shot of their stay in Boston. I did that with the cast of Chicago and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I have some nice memories of that.” Limitz’ story began when he was just 17 and a ticket taker in the Theater District. He was walking past the old Music Hall one night when Bette Midler came waltzing out the front door. “I happened to be in the right place at the right time and there she was,” Limitz said. “I thought to myself, ‘This is a moment where someone should have a camera.’”
70
And so Sid asked for—and got—a camera for Christmas, and he’s been taking pictures ever since. In the district’s theaters, comedy clubs, gay bars, concert venues and movie houses, Limitz encountered and photographed legends including Liza Minnelli, Lauren Bacall, Elaine Stritch, David Bowie, Frank Zappa and more. He shot pictures of drag queens, street scenes and dozens of unknown actors who did plays in Boston, then went on to greater fame. That list includes Kelsey Grammer, Jennifer Holliday, Megan Mullally, Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon. Limitz describes his style as reminiscent of “the original street photographers of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s.” As a member of the theatrical employees union, Sid worked with Bacall in the Theatre District twice—in 1999 for Waiting in the Wings at the Colonial and in the ‘80s when she did Love Letters at The Wilbur with Richard Kiley. But his favorite pic of the actress was snapped outside the Harvard Club in 1980, when Bacall came to celebrate the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy’s birthday with the clan. Christopher Plummer—who has a long association with Boston’s stages going back to 1965, when he opened The Sound of Music at the old Gary Theatre on Stuart Street—posed for Limitz a number of times over the years, most recently when he was shooting The Forger with John Travolta in the district last fall. The roving cameraman also has fond memories of meeting Katharine Hepburn when she

And in 1976, during America’s bicentennial, Sid did a series of photos of celebrities and average people holding his red, white and blue sneaker. “I wrote Frank Zappa when he was at the Music Hall and he agreed to do a photo shoot,” he said. “He was not interested in small talk, basically ‘yap’ and ‘nope,’ but he had a definite concept for his image with the sneaker. He had a staged look of disdain, possibly his statement about America at the time.” Limitz, who lost his job at the Citi Wang Theatre when the stage door union gigs were outsourced, still has his heart in the Theatre District and has launched a Facebook page titled ‘Tremont & Stuart,’ where many of his photographs and memories are displayed. “It’s a way to stay in touch to be part of the district without actually working there,” he said. “I wouldn’t probably wait an hour to see Mike Tyson come out the stage door if I didn’t have it.”

ll of us at Cape Air’s Bird’s Eye View salute our newest best friend and favorite journalist Adam Davis of BuzzFeed.com, a site described as the “hottest, most social content on the web.” Self disclosure, I do not know Mr. Davis nor have I ever read buzzfeed.com. I am so long in the tooth; I still get news the old-fashioned way, newspapers delivered to my door every morning. But in a spirit of total self aggrandizement we sing the praises of BuzzFeed and Adam Davis for his list of: “Small New England Towns You Absolutely Need To Visit.”

We hate to sound braggy but nine of BuzzFeed’s celebrated cities happen to be a Cape Air flight away from the airline’s northeast hub at Boston’s Logan International Airport. The must visit destinations are: Woodstock and Dorset, Vermont; Bar Harbor, and Castine, Maine; Hanover, New Hampshire; and the Massachusetts’ sea side towns of Falmouth, Oak Bluffs, and Provincetown. Thank-you Adam Davis.

Also on the list is Cape Air’s newest northeast island, the remote and one could say, ethereal, Block Island, Rhode Island. The waves, cliffs, and fog rolling across the bluff will have you conjuring images of The French Lieutenant’s Woman. A true get away from it all, Block Island covers 6,000 acres of spectacular scenery. Walking and bike trails make up the, ‘what to do,’ list this time of year which is perfect for the, ‘get away from it all’ aficionados. With a winter population of around 1,000, quiet and peaceful rules the day. Does Macy’s recommend Gimbels? Or vice versa? They do in this case. Since 1970 New England Airlines has been providing year round air service to Block Island from Westerly, Rhode Island. At this time of year other than the ferry they are your only air access to the island. Spring brings Cape Air’s return to service between T.F. Stoking the fire at the Woodstock Inn
hey say there’s no place like home for the holidays. But ‘they’ have probably never been to Woodstock, Vermont. The quintessential New England town is a winter wonderland at this time of year and there is no more magical place to play in the snow, admire the twinkling lights, ski, snowshoe, ice skate or just hunker down by a cozy fire. A 20-minute drive from the Cape Air terminal at the Lebanon, N.H. Airport, Woodstock recently earned honors as the number one “Small New England Town You Absolutely Need to Visit” by Buzzfeed.com, and travel bible Frommer’s calls it “One of New England’s most exquisite villages.” Sprawling along the Village Green is award-winning The Woodstock Inn & Resort, named one of the “Top 500 Best Hotels in the World” by Travel & Leisure.
78
“The holidays are a special time here,” said Courtney Lowe, director of sales and marketing at the inn. “Families come and gather taking multiple rooms, our chefs will prepare a big Christmas dinner, and there’s a gala New Year’s Eve event in the Rockefeller Room. It’s just a great family atmosphere at that time of year.” The inn is decked out in boughs of holly and a huge Gingerbread House– big enough for kids to play in–sits in the lobby. The resort’s elves will even decorate guest rooms and supply Christmas trees upon request. The inn boasts 142 recently renovated guestrooms – many with wood burning fireplaces – and a new 10,000 square-foot spa offering a full suite of services. The Woodstock Inn & Resort offers a number of special packages during the winter months. woodstockinn.com

verything’s nice at Sugar & Spice, the pancake house, gift shop, candy store, sugar house and purveyor of “other Vermont traditions,” located on Route 4 in Mendon. The country emporium offers one-stop shopping for souvenirs, gifts and a hearty Vermont breakfast – and don’t think of leaving without a bottle of their own Vermont maple syrup. “Between what we sell and what we use it’s probably 100,000 gallons a year,” said owner Walter Manney, who, with his wife Lynn, has run Sugar & Spice for the past nine years. “And we send it all over the world.”
80
But the breakfast is what draws in the crowds. Served daily, pancakes and waffles with the shop’s own maple syrup top the menu. Don’t even think of asking for artificial syrup – it’ll cost you extra! Be sure to check out the original sugar house and red barn on the property, all that is left of the original Ripley estate. “It’s a destination,” Manney said. “People look forward to coming here when they’re visiting, it’s a real pretty spot, and inside, there’s never a dull moment. We’ve been very, very fortunate.” Sugar & Spice is a short drive from your Cape Air arrival at the Rutland Airport at the intersection of Route 4 and Meadowlake Drive. he Chaffee Art Center & Downtown Gallery in Rutland, Vermont is all about bringing art to the people, and when the holidays roll around, that means gingerbread decorating, holiday workshops and artistic gifts. “It’s a great way to end the year at Chaffee,” said gallery coordinator Richelle Franzoni, “and to also let people know art is a perfect holiday gift.” Beginning December 5th the Art Center on South Main Street and the Downtown Gallery on Merchants Row will hold decorating workshops for kids, their ever-popular holiday boutique featuring 100 gifts for under $100, and an annual gingerbread house contest. “This year’s theme is ‘Out of the Box,’” Ms. Franzoni said. “We’re looking for contemporary/futuristic structures, abstract houses – anything that goes beyond the traditional four walls and gable roof.
Every year there will be one kid in the workshop that does something where you say, ‘I would have never thought of that; clearly a genius in the making!’”
Chaffee Art Center, Rutland, Vermont
Located about five miles from the Cape Air terminal at the Rutland State Airport, the Art Center and Downtown Gallery feature fine art exhibits throughout the year, workshops and classes ranging from woodworking to gaming to the popular “Sip & Dip” sessions where participants bring a bottle of wine and spend an evening sipping and dipping into water colors. chaffeeartcenter.org

eer lovers take notice; you can ward off Montana’s winter chill with a fun event from the folks at the Visit Billings office, a Brewery Tour. The geography really works for this attraction,” says Visit Billings spokesperson Kelly McCandless. “We have seven breweries and one distillery within a mile and a half of each other and as an added bonus they are all located in historic downtown Billings, so at any time you can take a break and visit some of our museums like the Western Heritage Center.” The tour hours vary by brewer, but usually happen Tuesday thru Saturday from 4 pm to 8 pm with no signup necessary. “Anytime anyone is visiting downtown they can enjoy a locally brewed beer in as many micro-breweries as they wish. We also have a distillery offering locally made vodka and gin and available soon is locally made whiskey with grain coming from a nearby farm, making this a true Montana product.” visitbillings.com

op Chef, Master Chef, Iron Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, The Taste: Seems you can’t turn on the TV without running into a cooking competition – and audiences are lapping it up. What’s with the sudden explosion of competitive cooking? Why do we love watching Gordon Ramsay scream at groveling contestants on Hell’s Kitchen or dash the dreams of daring home cooks on Master Chef? What is the secret to the success of Top Chef with 12 seasons and a half-dozen spinoffs? And who are the chefs lining up for a chance to show up their rivals in front of a national audience? “In terms of life experience, who gets to do this?” asks Boston chef Tiffani Faison, a veteran of two seasons of Top Chef, a couple of spinoffs and Top Chef Duels. “It’s so much fun, even when it’s super stressful and you kind of want to throw up, it’s still fun,” she continued. “I really like being under the gun…and it’s great for business.” Tiffani’s Sweet Cheeks barbecue restaurant near Boston’s Fenway Park is going gangbusters and the business boost the chefs get by appearing on TV cooking shows is a big reason why they do it. “It really is a huge career opportunity for them,” said Top Chef judge Gail Simmons, an editor at Food & Wine magazine. “And chefs are by nature incredibly competitive so it appeals to that part too.” Simmons has been a Top Chef judge since its first season on Bravo back in 2006 and is currently judging the new season of the hit show, which was filmed in and around Boston. Some of the familiar landmarks that will pop up this season include Fenway Park, Cheers, Plimouth Plantation and the Museum of Science. The Top Chef crew was joined by most of Boston’s top chefs for the local episodes and New England Patriot

The guest stars, the variety of locations and, of course, the drama keep viewers coming back for seconds and thirds – even though they can’t experience the No. 1 thing the show is all about – eating the food! “I know, I hear that so much,” Faison said. “I think that’s one of the reasons the restaurants get so many fans of the show coming in – they finally get to taste what we do.” Simmons said Top Chef audiences tune in for lots of reasons and “you don’t have to be a crazy foodie to enjoy the show.” “I think we showcase what the life of a professional chef is really like and I think it’s interesting to get a window into a world that most people don’t get to know,” she said. “And it’s exciting to watch great chefs; it’s like watching a great athlete at the top of their game. It’s exciting to see people do what they do best.” Top Chef airs Wednesday nights at 10 pm on Bravo.

O
ne Christmas morning (while snow blanketed other locales) I walked barefoot in the BVI, absorbing the holiday cheer. An older gentleman got down on knee and serenaded his wife by crooning “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to meee, an island and a palm treee.” So in honor of the holidays, here’s what a BVI holiday has to offer you and your true love (or anyone else on your shopping list). # 2 Tank Dives: The BVI has a well-established dive industry with outstanding dives which includes sites such as the wreck of the RMS Rhone.

#3 French Manicures: If being pampered is your thing, be sure to ask about numerous spas, independent or linked to resorts on Tortola or Virgin Gorda. #4 Calling birds: Last year, Cape Air added service to Virgin Gorda, giving you yet another locale for finding “an island and a palm tree.”

In case you need a refresher on the Caribbean, the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) include St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and the newest and tiniest, Water Island, located about a quarter of a mile from Charlotte Amalie Harbor, in the heart of St. Thomas. Back to my father, after a brief pause, a smile spreads across his face and he puts his hands in the air and shouts “80-80!” I look bewildered, so he begins to flesh out his answer. “The sea and the weather are always about 80 degrees, and that’s perfect for me.” St. Thomas feels like a home away from home for my recently retired parents, who spend about three weeks there each January, escaping winter’s icy grasp on New England. Every year, they rent a two-bedroom villa and they invite family and friends to sign up for one week slots so that they can be surrounded by loves ones. “The USVI is just easy,” my Dad says, going on to explain how the lack of a passport requirement make the USVI more convenient for some, while St. Thomas also provides a great base for island-hopping and exploring nearby St. John and even the British Virgin Islands for day trips. The next thing I know, he’s rattling off the names of restaurants, bars, beaches and historic sites that he’s visited over the years, and we’re on a mental getaway to someplace in the sun. Editor’s notes: Since we all do not have access to Susan’s father, another great source of USVI information is the U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel and Tourism Association. virgin-islands-hotels.com

“to die for” view, privacy, huge living spaces both inside and out, and minutes from the Cruz Bay action – just a few reasons why Villa Tesori tops my favorite list for your St. John villa getaway. Another major reason is property manager Ms. Kathy McLaughlin, who does it all. “Book your plane ticket, pack your clothes, bring some spending money and the rest is up to me,” says Ms. McLaughlin, who arranges pickup at the St. Thomas airport, meets you at the ferry, and personally escorts you to the villa. “We believe in the personal touch and although we manage a number of villas on St. John, we are truly a ‘Mom and Pop’ operation specializing in personal service including jeep rentals and, if you wish, the services of a private chef.” Villa Tesori is a five bedroom jewel with 5½ baths including a private apartment with full amenities. The bedrooms are stunning and along with the open air kitchen, dining and living rooms, all offer stunning views of the Chocolate Hole beach area where you can enjoy first rate snorkeling. Prices vary depending on the season but winter rates hover around $10,400 and include midweek maid service, ferry pick up and a lot of other extras. The villa sleeps ten guests, so it is perfect for families with kids, but do the math–for five couples, or a group of friends, you split the cost and you have a truly affordable escape on a per person cost. Do not wait on this one for the location, amenities and of course the 24/7 concierge services make this one of the more popular villas on the island. islandgetawaysinc.com

Oceanport Villa, St. John
rade winds, balcony views of St. John’s spectacular Hart Bay and a walking trail to your own private snorkeling heaven – Oceanport is a great bet for an affordable villa vacation. The ever changing views of the sea and sky can be enjoyed from the living and kitchen areas and from any of the four bedrooms. Other extras include well-stocked bookshelves and a hot tub and barbecue in the cozy garden grotto. A drum roll on the price here – for two guests/1 bedroom – $2,850 for the week. Rent the whole villa for 8 guests and the weekly rate is $4,200. Split that with three other couples or eight friends – either way– this is one great buy. Islandgetawaysinc.com

“
et your fingers do the walking,” has an entirely new meaning in the ‘click and go’ travel planning world. VRBO, HomeAway, and Trip Advisor’s FlipKey are runaway favorites when it comes to finding a vacation home, but what about the “what ifs?” “VRBO and other sites like that do an outstanding job, “says broker Chris Smith of Tortola’s Coldwell Banker, who oversees a number of villa rentals. “One of the first things to look for on the site is the location of the manager or owner. It is vital that if you need to call someone with a question or problem, they are local and accessible.” Kathy McLaughlin at Island Getaways in St. John agrees and from ferry pick-up to dinner referrals, she is on call 24/7 for her villa guests. “I have called St. John home for over a decade and I love to share my island favorites including the spectacular Reef Bay Trail and other, off the beaten path beaches and hiking paths.” As for price, Mr. Smith did not mince words, “Haggling is fine and in fact somewhat expected. Of course it depends on availability but we are open to a price discussion and in low season we may go down ten to fifteen percent.” (Low season is April –November.) Other questions to ask before signing the bottom line include the villa location. Do you want remote and away from it all or is walking distance to town important? How about beach access or a pool and as for online pictures, Mr. Smith suggests, “Find out how old the pictures are, for what was taken years ago may be quite a different story now.” Other questions to ask before signing the bottom line include the villa location. “Do you want remote and away from it all or is walking distance to town important? How about beach access or a pool?” For our featured villas in this issue, no worries. The photos were taken weeks ago and frankly, although they are gorgeous they cannot

ward-winning beaches are a completely doable hike away, Cruz Bay fun is literally a three-minute walk down the street, add to that the beautifully furnished hillside villas, a pool, award-winning restaurant and a helpful staff— my old stomping grounds, Gallows Point Resort tops my list for a perfect St. John escape. In addition to location, minutes from your ferry arrival, St. John’s laid back spirit continues to enthuse Gallows visitors just as it did when I visited there in the (ahem) 70’s when the resort was just a handful of cottages and chickens, peacocks and donkeys roamed free. Pre-sunset would bring out a colorful assortment of locals and visitors who gathered around a makeshift table and bar for a round of story swapping.

hen meeting Vieques jewelry designer Sarah Carbia you soon learn that, first, she is a mother, second, she is a surfer, and third that she happens to be a metal smith. Shy and rather low key, Sarah gets all of her inspiration from her first two life passions, her daughter and the ocean, and weaves them delicately into her jewelry design. Her company, Kala Designs is named for her four-year-old daughter, who is also quite the surfer. This mother-daughter mermaid team hails from San Juan PR, but have called Vieques home since 2013.

BUYING LOCAL IN VIEQUES

ISLAND CARE
M
GIFT FROM THE SEA
yrna Renkert began collecting sea glass while walking her dog Sam on the beaches of Puerto Rico. When her husband started complaining about the piles of sea glass around their house, she began making it into jewelry for herself. Stopping her on the street, friends and visitors to the island started commenting on her creations and would buy the jewelry right off her body... hence “Local Color” was born! I wandered into the Local Color Studio as Myrna was preparing for a trunk show in Cape May, NJ. I found her perched on a stool behind piles and piles of smooth sea blue, green, white, brown and the rare bright blue sea glass. Behind safety glasses, with drill in hand, she was finishing a piece made with printed cork, metal, and sea glass. Sea Glass is a reverse gem refined by nature rather than man. It can take up to seven years for a broken piece of glass to be tumbled by the sea, recycling it into a frosty gem of color. Vieques is known to have a few beaches abundant with sea glass, depending on the tides, and searching the stretch of sand to find the little gems shining in the sun is a must when you visit. Ask someone for directions and they are apt to stop what they are doing and lead you to exactly where you wish to go. Do include Nevis Peak as one of your first adventures. It is a great way to get your body moving after your flight and to enjoy an eagle’s eye view of Nevis and the surrounding islands. Connect with a tour guide for a partial hike for unless you are a triathlete type, it is not advisable to go to the top. It is also difficult to do in one day.

would wax poetic about Carimar Beach Club even if they were not part of the Bird’s Eye View family. This beachfront gem literally has something for everyone. On my last visit I popped into the office where guests were exchanging books, one honeymoon couple needed a corkscrew, a family with kids was planning their itinerary for the day and another group was working with the in-house concierge on their food shopping list. Everyone was happy! Friendly and attentive service abounds at the Carimar and the pristine one– and two–bedroom villas are fully equipped. If you wish, you can have a well-stocked cupboard in advance of your arrival. If you choose to leave the cooking to others you are steps away from Anguilla’s famed fivestar restaurant Blanchards or the more casual Blanchards Beach Bar. Carimar’s rates are around $260 per night until December 15th when the nightly rate rises to $425. Do check for specials and such at carimar.com

Flamenco Beach, Culebra
ulebra – this tropical paradise is still under the vacation radar but word is spreading on this ‘get away from it all’ island that owns bragging rights to beach perfection. Known as the Spanish Virgin Island, Culebra is Cape Air’s newest Caribbean destination and is less than twenty minutes from San Juan, Puerto Rico, but those minutes represent a world away. Laid back is an understatement for Culebra where you have a few waterfront restaurants, several local gift shops, and a rather fun and
funky supermarket. As for the beaches, Flamenco and the rather remote, but truly spectacular Zoni offer long stretches of power white sand and water so clear you barely need a mask. Find your flights at capeair.com.
