EMPLOYEES AND OWNERS– ONE AND THE SAME
T
hink Like an Owner – In 1996 Cape Air transferred a significant portion of our company stock to what was then a 250-person workforce and officially became an employeeowned company. Today, due to the efforts of our entire team, Cape Air, with a workforce of over 1,000 people, is one of the largest independent regional airlines in the United States with destinations across the country and around the globe. In 2014, eighteen years after the inception of our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), we are expanding our employee ownership by distributing more of our stock to more of our employees. We are proud to share the rewards of ownership with our co-workers who have worked together for a quarter of a century to grow and improve our company. We also believe that your experience with our company will continue to be enhanced by the culture of employee ownership. Each They did it! Dan with the 2013 Boston Red Sox of us is empowered and incentivized to work hard to make your travel World Series trophy experience exceptional. In addition, employee ownership better aligns the interests of all of our stakeholders; employees, owners, customers and communities. We think that this structure helps to foster relationships based on kindness, teamwork and respect, making Cape Air a better place to work and a better company for you to do business with. In short, employee ownership reinforces our company mantra – MOCHA HAGoTDI – Make Our Customers Happy And Have A Good Time Doing It. Finally, it is fitting that as we enter 2014, which according to the Chinese calendar is the Year of the Horse, we are now flying to six cities in the western state of Montana, joining Virgin Gorda and the Puerto Rican island of Culebra to our ever expanding route map. I also want to wish a warm and sincere Cape Air welcome to our new destinations, along with heartfelt thanks and deepest appreciation to our long time customers as well as to all of my fellow employee-owners. A Happy New Year to all of us! Dan, one of the proud owners of Cape Air

THERE IS A CHIHUAHUA ON THE ROOF!
ieques is a virtual wildlife preserve, emphasis on wild. Bird lovers alert – bring along a tropical bird guide to help identify the colorful plumage darting through the palms. Equally as free to roam are donkeys, goats, and the ever-present family of horses. All meandering free, across the beaches, along the side of the road, in backyards, wandering across your outdoor yoga class; the assorted menagerie barely takes notice of you. I thought I was fairly acclimated to the scene until I actually saw a tiny Chihuahua on the roof of a house. Unconcerned, the little mite of a thing was just standing there, watching the scene below. I was told Chihuahuas on the roof are a fairly common occurrence in this non-commercial Eden-like island, located fifteen minutes from San Juan. Beaches, hiking and a night visit to one of the largest bioluminescent bays in the world pretty much fills your ‘to do’ list here. Check out my Vieques discoveries on page 8. Photo: Kim Corkran

ieques yoga teacher Jennifer Dehner’s open air class happens at the Hix Island House. Her flowing, gentle and no-pressure yoga practice, set in a pastoral setting, is a total treat. Talk about one with nature; you could be eyeballed by a pair of snowy white egrets peering over the hedge, accompanied by music from tropical birds swooping in from the nearby trees. Yoga, as it should be, happens at 9:30 am, Tuesday through Sunday, for $15, and mats are provided. beadingbikini.com
Stepping out of your usual comfort zone can add a little excitement to your vacation, like renting a tree top villa in the middle of a tropical jungle. Me Hideaway in Nevis fits the bill for a George of the Jungle escape. Yes, those eyes peeking out at you from the banana leaf are, in fact, Nevis monkeys who are shy and keep their distance, but they do seem to be everywhere. Check out page 40 for an escape to one of the friendliest and somewhat more exotic islands in the Caribbean. For northeasterners looking for a wintry ‘staycation’, Gayle Fee shares the latest on the ski scene and I toured a few inns for the cozy fire and health spa scene. Off-season rates are a virtual steal at luxury inns across Cape Cod and the Islands and in Bar Harbor. Take your pick on page 44. Kick in 2014 – pack a bag, pick your Cape Air paradise and have an adventure.

s I showered, his unblinking stare never wavered. Colored by the rosy glow of his perch atop a crimson Bird of Paradise, the baby gecko blinked only when the hummingbird joined us for a hover in the nearby Bougainvillea. My outdoor shower, overlooking the sea in the magnificent villa, Los Arcos, is a bit of a nature preserve featuring the soothing background sounds of birds, frogs and what have you. How to describe a place where the WOW factor is pretty much off the charts? Try this: if Arthur and Guinevere, pre-Lancelot, opted for a Caribbean getaway, this would be their place. With ceilings that go on forever, intricate chandeliers lighting the vast expanse of living space, decorated with imaginative antiques and artwork, the six-acre property is centrally located just minutes from the village of Esperanza and some of the island’s most famous beaches. But, trust me, you will be hard put to tear yourself away from the selection of lounging places in and around the three-bedroom villa which also features a salt water infinity pool with stunning views of Vieques. Details include Ralph Lauren beach towels, a coffee bean grinder with the fresh beans on the side, and a full array of beach chairs and snorkeling gear. There is nothing you need to bring. If you call ahead with your shopping list, you can skip a trip to the supermarket.

If you must check in with the real world, there is a separate office with easy hook up for your laptop. Wifi access and satellite radio is everywhere including the pool area, along with a mega-flat screen with a bazillion channels. Los Arcos is a vacation treasure with prices starting at $5,000 a week in high season, dropping to $4,000 in June. AFTER HOURS IN ST. THOMAS

fter a day of soaking up the sun in St. Thomas, it is time to enjoy the live music scene happening across the island. Jazz lovers should check out vocalist, Denise Hummer. Blessed with a velvety smooth voice, find out when she is appearing at island nightspots and do not miss her show. Equally as talented, with a huge following, is keyboard artist Danny Silber, a regular at the Sapphire Bar and Grill. This is a musical treat and an affordable night out with a menu featuring burgers, wraps and wood-fired pizza. Tickles Dockside Pub in the Crown Bay section of St. Thomas, just minutes from the airport is super casual and the open-air restaurant has great views of the harbor and a ‘lookie lou’ vantage point for watching the giant cruise ships. Conch chowder and baby back ribs are favorites here, along with live music covering the spectrum from rock to pop to reggae. If you feel the itch to hit the Denise Hummer – Tickles Dockside Pub stage, get there on Wednesday night for the sometimes raucous open mic night. sapphirebarandgrill.com ticklesdocksidepub.com

Off season, that number drops to $135 a night. Minutes from your ferry arrival, unless you are dragging a steamer trunk, the hotel is an easy walk-no rental car or taxi needed. Brand new and squeaky clean, the hotel’s six bedrooms and penthouse suite are simply furnished but everything you need is here including satellite TV and free WiFi. A continental breakfast including a few yummy pastries is included in the price and served on the covered veranda overlooking the street. After affordability, location is the second best reason to choose Cruz Bay Hotel. You are a quick walk to the downtown day and night action and to beautiful Honeymoon Beach. 50 FEET UNDER FOR 60 DAYS: ST. JOHN’S LUNAR LINK
Steve Simonsen Photography
Great Lameshur Bay
By Susan Zaluski
I
n July, 1969, in grainy black-and-white televised images, the first lunar landing became forever etched into our brains, intertwining, science and history – and the realization of man’s wildest dreams. But let’s rewind the 8-track by a few months moving to an unlikely locale. Twenty-square mile St. John was still a sleepy backwater, relatively untouched by human development. Even today, with numerous tourists’ flip flops and hiking boots traversing the island, it is still easy to enjoy solitude throughout the pristine Virgin Islands National Park, and Great Lameshur Bay remains as one of the most peaceful of the island’s many scenic bays boasting seclusion and warm, clear waters swirling with marine life. While these attributes appeal to sun-seekers on holiday, in early 1969 those same characteristics enticed NASA, the U.S. Navy, the Department of the Interior and General Electric into building a submersed habitat to carry out an underwater living experiment intended to mimic the confines of living in space. The project was given the name ‘Tekite’ after small

space-borne materials that rest on the ocean floor-symbolizing the project’s link between space and sea. Undersea living could provide the safest environment for replicating the conditions present in space travel, allowing physiologists and psychologists the ability to study the mental and physical health of participating “aquanauts”, with hopes of predicting and understanding the problems that would be associated with space crews, and helping to prepare for the monumental mission to the moon. The Navy’s Seabees built a base camp-which bears resemblance to the M.A.S.H. camp made famous by the namesake television serious (and we suspect similar antics ensued) to provide a support station. The habitat itself was submersed onto the sea floor at a depth of fifty feet and consisted of two large steel cylinders attached to a rectangular base and connected by a crossover tunnel. Each cylinder contained an upper and lower compartment that were 12 ½ feet in diameter and 9 feet high. Resplendent with all the necessary marine research features, Tektite also held modest crew quarters

While the physical structure of Tektite was removed years ago, the original base camp remains, and today makes up part of the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), an extension of the University of the Virgin Islands. This camp, along with other additional structures, supports numerous scientists from around the globe who conduct research in the Virgin Islands National Park – both above and below water. The facility also hosts hundreds of students from schools and universities both locally and abroad, helping to educate future generations about the importance of conserving our natural resources. t bears noting when the esteemed New York Times lists Anguilla’s Moonsplash as one of the top festivals in the world. This Cape Air Caribbean destination is nirvana for reggae lovers, boomers and hippies (For obvious reasons, I refuse to use the word aging) who are looking for a one of a kind musical interlude in this quiet beach paradise. Presiding over the four days of music is local Anguilla legend, Bankie Banx who launched the festival back in 1991. As of press time this year’s lineup is still TBA but it almost doesn’t matter. Reggae is the order of the day, the scene is Bankie Banx’ Dune Preserve on Anguilla’s aptly named Rendezvous Bay, where you never know who will show up in the bar side hammock. Mr. ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’ with the parrot head fan base is a regular habitué along with Katie Perry’s latest squeeze. No names please. Find lots more at olaidebanks.wix.com/moonsplash.

his 36-mile island paradise in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean is the sister island to bustling St. Kitts. Although both islands boast miles of glorious beaches, the Cape Air destination of Nevis is far more laid back in every sense of the word. Maybe it’s the water streaming from the island’s famous Nelson Spring, bottled and sold around the island. Whatever it is, Nevisians should share it with the rest of the world for here you will find the friendliest and most welcoming of islanders. Everyone from cab drivers to locals in the supermarket are ready with a friendly, “Good Day!” And know that when asking for directions, they will often go way out of their way to lead you in the right direction. Standing sentry over the island is the dormant volcano, Nevis Peak, almost always mystically enshrouded in the clouds so when the top does shine through it is breathtaking. Hiking tours to the peak are available and always make sure you take a guide with you, for the jungles are deep and it is very easy to get lost. Hiking the rain forest with Lynell

WILMA’S DINER…CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS
FIT FOR PRINCESS…

n this case we are referring to perhaps the most popular princess in history, the late Princess Diana, known the world over as Lady Di. Chef Wilma Kilbo, owner of the brand new eatery, Wilma’s Diner in downtown Charlestown is the former cook at the luxurious Montpelier Plantation Inn, a popular vacation spot for British royals. It is the resort where Ms. Kilbo once cooked a roast suckling pig for the Princess and her boys.

“I will remember that meal for the rest of my life,” says Ms. Kilbo, flashing a huge smile.” She was so kind and caring and loved my sweet potatoe croquettes.” Wilma’s prowess in the kitchen continues with the hands-down best fresh fish sandwich you will ever eat. “The secret is the sauce,” says Wilma and no, she is not giving out the ingredients but she will be happy to serve you at her no frills diner where her son Wilroy is there to greet you. Make this a definite lunch stop with a table by the window on Charlestown’s Main Street, and watch the downtown action as you dine. It is local, fun and the sauce alone is worth the visit. e Hideaway is an appropriate name for this top of the world villa with views of Nevis Peak on one side and the Caribbean across the entire front. You will be hard put to leave the wrap-around veranda with plenty of lounge chairs and a comfy seating area that also overlooks the pool area. Cooled by mild trade winds that keep the surrounding palms in gentle motion, the three-bedroom villa is the most private of retreats, with only the sounds of the birds, crickets and tree frogs breaking the silence. Keeping a watchful eye are the monkeys who peer out from the perch in the nearby trees. They keep their distance with an occasional peek through the giant palm fronds. This is a totally delightful place to stay when you are after seclusion and a true island experience. Located on the windward side of Nevis, the “road” (and note the quotes around the word “road”) is an adventure unto itself. Hanging vines and a Maxfield Parrishlike feel to the surrounding forest will have you expecting the appearance of wood

Then it makes sense to rent a car to get to the nearby beaches or into town. A cab is about $20 one-way and Smiley can take you to the rental car office where a Jeep is a total necessity. HARBOR VIEW HOTEL EDGARTOWN, MARTHA’S VINEYARD
By Michelle Haynes
It pays to be a local. Edgartown’s gorgeous waterfront resort, The Harbor
View is offering a mega deal. Show proof you live on Cape Cod or the Islands and you enjoy a local rate of $79. It is an understatement to call that figure less than the usual price of a room. Let’s just say it is “way, way less.” The hotel more than lives up to all the accolades, including Travel and Leisure’s prestigious list of the top 50 U.S. resorts. Built in 1891, the architecture retains its historical roots, including the wrap-around veranda overlooking the harbor, while at the same time offers guests all the modern amenities. A highlight here is the amazing location. The muted colors of winter highlight the iconic Edgartown lighthouse and a wintry beach walk and hiking trails are literally minutes from your door. No need to venture far to eat with the Harbor View’s two award-winning restaurants. Water Street Restaurant

U
nless you carry the Garbo, “I want to be alone” gene, the Cape Cod and Islands can appear deafeningly quiet at this time of year. That is, unless you know where to go. For solid laughs this winter catch up with the hilariously funny comic Kevin Flynn. Every July Mr. Flynn gets Nantucket rollicking with his annual Comedy Festival and he is brings comic relief to the island this winter with a series of performances at the newly renovated Dreamland Theater. The lineup includes Barbados native Carl Yard seen on Comedy Central, A&E and at Caroline’s Comedy Club. He also recently opened for Aretha Franklin on a national concert tour and is currently touring with the Road Kill Comedy Tour. Also on the bill is standup comic Desi Walker. The comedy series supports the innovative Stand up & Learn program, using comedy and the art Kevin Flynn of stand up to inspire high schoolers. “This isn’t just about comedy,” said Flynn. “It’s about helping kids tap into their creativity and gain selfconfidence.” It’s a worthwhile cause and a reason to laugh in the dead of winter, before you cozy up to the fireplace. f you want a feel for Nantucket as the whaling port, circa 1800, now is the time to go. The cobblestones and windswept beaches are virtually deserted and your list of where to stay, eat or shop is pretty much a one-pager. This is ‘stop the world’ time, 30 miles out to sea, with the stillness broken only by the gulls, foghorns, and the crunch of snow beneath your boots. For some it is magic, including longtime Nantucket resident and
56
Bird’s Eye View contributor Kim Corkran. “The Nantucket Atheneum is one of my favorite places to shake the chill of winter and get cozy with a book or to take the time to poke around the historical exhibits and documents,” says Ms. Corkran. One of the oldest public libraries in the United States, the Nantucket Atheneum has hosted a number of luminaries over the years including Emerson, Thoreau, and Frederick Douglas who mesmerized the crowd in a stirring speech. The Atheneum’s first librarian, Maria Mitchell, went on to international fame as one of the world’s foremost astronomers. Located in the center of town, the Atheneum also hosts a variety of winter programs including reading and writing groups, guest speakers and special LEGO events for children. nantucketatheneum.org.

CAPE ‘AIR’ FOR A CAUSE
Laurie Goddard
By Michelle Haynes ape ‘Air’, hand-blown glass bottles designed by renowned glass blower David McDermott, is the way Laurie Goddard continues to give back to the research staff at Massachusetts General Hospital, who she credits with saving her life. Six years cancerfree, Ms. Goddard, from the Cape Cod town of Sandwich, Massachusetts, inherited the cancer gene known as BRCA 1 and is selling the glass pink and blue bottles with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards finding a cure. “Our goal is to raise both money and awareness,” says Ms. Goddard. “I actually inherited the gene from my father who unknowingly passed it on to his four children. It was only through my yearly checkup that my doctors were able to find it in time.” BRCA 1 also received worldwide attention when actress Angelina Jolie announced to the world that she inherited this particular cancer gene.
C Photo: Olivia Goddard
60
Ms. Goddard says her surgery and recovery is now a thing of the past. “It is not even part of my thought process although I do see my doctors twice a year for checkups and that will continue for the rest of my life. I will say that what has changed for me today is how I live my life. Cancer scares you so much that you try and change what you are doing as quickly as possible. I hired a nutritionist, who taught me portion control and calorie watching. Now on a daily 1,000 calorie limit, I have never felt better and my weight is almost where it should be for someone who is five foot two. When you do come out the other side following a cancer diagnosis, I will say life is truly a lot better. You see everything more clearly with far less judgment. I appreciate things a lot more than I used to and material things are just not as important.” Wife and mother of three, Ms. Goddard says her nutrition and exercise regimen is now a family affair and they are all healthier and in better shape than ever before. If you are interested in supporting the cause, Cape ‘Air’ in a bottle is at mycapecodair.com. Priced at $39, every penny is given to the Massachusetts General Hospital Breast Cancer Research Center.

CHILI AND ROMANCE FIND A WAY IN MARTHA’S VINEYARD The 28th Annual MVY Radio Big Chili Contest
SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2014
“N
ot only have a number of couples met and fell in love at our Chili Festival, but we had one of those couples celebrate their anniversary at our event and they brought in the whole wedding party,” says Greg Orcutt, General Manager of the Vineyard’s local radio
station WMVY. For 28 years, WMVY has sponsored the island’s mid-winter chili festival and what began with about a half-dozen chili dishes now attracts over 30 entries from as far away as Texas. “This is, by far, the best community event we do at the radio station,” says Mr. Orcutt. “The Cape Air flights, along with the ferries, are filled with passengers who join what seems like the entire year-round island community for quite a party. Firemen, police, local chefs, a few of our churches and regular folks all present steaming pots of chili for tasting and judging in a variety of categories from hottest to, believe it or not, chili fudge.” $30 gets you all the chili you can eat along with entertainment from the mariachi band. Funds raised at the festival support local island charities. “Last year we were able to hand over a check for $36,000,” says Mr. Orcutt, who also added, “Corona Beer, one of our sponsors, says our festival is one of their busiest of the year.” It all happens at the PortugueseAmerican Club in Oak Bluffs. Cape Air is proud to join the list of supporters for this worthwhile and fun event. Details at mvyradio.com

he Winter Olympics get underway in Sochi, Russia in February but many of the skiers and snowboarders soaring through the air and flying down the mountains there made their first turns on the slopes of New Hampshire and Vermont. Bode Miller, probably the best-known Winter Olympian, famously grew up in the woods of Franconia without electricity or plumbing, but in the heart of the Granite State’s ski country. Bode first became addicted to speed flying down the steep chutes at Cannon Mountain. Legend has it that when he was 13, he set off an avalanche trying to ski down the sheer headwall at Tuckerman Ravine. Freestyle skier Hannah Kearney, who won a gold medal in moguls in the 2010 Winter Games, was born in Hanover, N.H. She grew up – and still lives – in Norwich, VT. She learned her high-flying style on the Waterville Valley Freestyle Team. Other Olympic hopefuls who trained in New Hampshire and Vermont include snowboarders Lindsey Jacobellis, Hannah Teter and Scotty Lago and skiers Nolan Kasper, Dyan Ferguson and Mikaela Shiffrin. Cape Air can zip you right to the heart of ski country with daily flights to both Lebanon, NH and Rutland, VT. Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire and Vermont’s Suicide Six Mountain are less than an hour’s drive from the Lebanon Municipal Airport, and Killington and Okemo are less than an hour from Rutland Southern Vermont Regional Airport. So what are you waiting for? There could be gold in your future!

yndi Lauper, Josh Ritter, Johnny Clegg and Keb’ Mo’ – top musical stars find their way to New Hampshire’s historic Lebanon Opera House. “Actually it is our location that allows us to attract national and international performers,” says Heather Clow, Executive Director of the Lebanon Opera House. “If they are performing in Boston or New York we are an easy stop on their way to Montreal and we have a

reputation for having a professional staff that performers love to work with. Also, having once been an opera house, the acoustics are outstanding.” Once a vaudeville stage, followed by a movie theatre, the opera house lay dormant until the 1970s when local high schools began using the space for theatrical productions.” “That community theatre continues today,” says Ms. Clow. “We have a number of talented folks that perform regularly. This season features the Broadway hit, Seussical the Musical, featuring teenagers from across the Upper Valley. It is one of the few times they all get together where it is not a competitive sporting event, underscoring our mission of arts, education and community.” The Lebanon Opera House, perfect for après ski. PULL ON YOUR YAKTRAX AND HEAD TO THE POINT SARANAC LAKE, NEW YORK

ive like a Rockefeller and I mean literally, like a Rockefeller. Stay in the luxurious beyond measure Adirondack retreat, The Point, which, a century ago, was home to William Avery Rockefeller. This lakeside, Adirondack style palace offers an all-inclusive pamper. From the moment you arrive, it is Gilded Age service all the way.
78
Minutes from your arrival at Saranac Lake’s Adirondack Regional Airport, you are whisked away to the 75-acre wooded preserve and, akin to a magical forest there is an adventure around every turn. You will love the cozy fire pits that crop up in the forest, with attentive staff on duty ready to serve you anything and everything imaginable. As for things to do, if you can tear yourself away from the gorgeous inside surroundings, your to-do list includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, curling, ice fishing and snow barbeques. Here’s a rather singular Point experience: take the twenty-five minute cross-country ski excursion to the private and secluded Buck Island and be greeted by a roaring fire, cozy picnic, hot toddy, champagne and other assorted beverages. Getting around the icy ground is made easier by the footwear given to all the guests. Yaktrax, named after the Tibetan Yak and favored by Himalayan Sherpas, provide the traction you need to avoid falling on your keister wandering around the property. As for the food, the chef and staff are on call pretty much around the clock. You want it and they most likely have it for you. All meals, excursions and even gratuities are included in one price, prepaid before you arrive so no hand in your pocket ever. The all inclusive rates start at $1,750 for a couple or $2,065 for up to six people. Check out discounts and the low season rates at thepointsaranac.com.
