THE INTERVIEW Valentina De Meo A story of a young fashion photographer nowadays: the key to success, inspirations & how to survive in today’s fashion system. Valentina tells us how it all started. How did you start working as a photographer? What was the first approach towards the camera? The love for photography has always accompanied me since I was a child. I started taking pictures while playing with a toy camera at the age of three. Of course, it did not take real pictures but in my imagination I could see all of them! When I grew up, whenever my dad was holding his Canon I always asked him to let me take two or three pictures, I was completely fascinated by that world! When at the age of 6 my parents, before a trip to Umbria, gave me as a gift the first compact film camera, it was a great joy! I have always photographed since then, but without the 4

clarity of wanting to learn the technique and without thinking that it would become my job. I just photographed for passion and instinct. In 2005 I graduated from high school and I found myself in front of two roads: I had to choose what to do with my future - continue with graduate studies or devote myself to the photography. Despite various difficulties I chose the second option, and four years later, in 2009, I opened my own studio in Bologna and now, a month ago, I started working in a new studio in Milan with some other creative minds like me. How did you get attracted by fashion? Hard to say, there is nothing in particular that attracted me... I found myself in the midst of this world without even knowing exactly why! The pursuit of perfection and absolute beauty have always been the topics of great fascination for me, I also think that fashion is, at the end, a big and fun game where everyone participates, many of which lose, somebody wins, but in any case you have fun. To have fun while 6

working is the most fascinating thing in the world, don’t you think so? What inspires you and what do you try to convey with your photography? It is hard to make a distinction between what can inspire me and what not. I think that everything can be a source of inspiration. It depends on a moment, on a sensation or a state of mind. The things that strike my attention in different moments acquire different values, but in any case leave a mark that sooner or later is recalled during a shooting. What I try to convey in my photographs (speaking of my personal work, not commissioned) is my state of mind. The photography for me is an outburst of all the emotions, positive or negative they are, I accumulate inside. What is the hardest thing in fashion photography? Keep afloat. In a sea of sharks. Where everybody sooner or later become sharks. Where everyone

sooner or later is attacked by sharks. Joking aside, like any other industry the world of fashion photography has its difficulties. In this historical period it gets affected by the economic crisis, but apart from that the most difficult thing is to stand out of the crowd. This industry is getting overfilled with everything one can immagine and it is hard to invent yourself every day, find new ideas, launch new trends! What do you do when you do not shoot? When I do not shoot do a lot of things! I like to do research on style and design, deepen my photographic and art knowledge, visit exhibitions or write. And then I spend a lot of time with dogs, the other great passion of mine!

Or rather a heart of ink. For a modern Alice lost in the amazing world of concrete. Softened, however, by a play of lights and reflections that give back an unusual glaze, where the strength of the cement is mitigated with the lightness of glass of an evolved Agorà.

somewhere between memory and future.

A dichotomy is present in the choice of clothing, where the naturally processed nappa leather, “stained” with inkjet using an exclusive print, is combined with gossamer silk organza.

Sharp geometric forms find a natural association with rounded shapes, creating a perfect synergy between density and lightness, as a woman nowadays, strong and delicate at the same time.

A contemporary woman who does not deny sartorial garments and hand made accessories, but discovers them within a futuristic perspective, 10

BEAUTY THEME

THE (H)AIR The PERFECT HARMONY and pleasant UNION of HAIR, CLOTHING and JEWELLERY The goal was to create three hairstyles for a shooting in an urban location made of heights and glass, fusing together contemporary clothing and jewelry into a modern look. Starting with a futuristic vision inspired by the heights of the skyscraper and its huge windows the first hairstyle is a high up-do with wavy contours adorned with a precious brooch. Continuing with an edgy mood where dark color clothes were styled up with geometrical jewelry, the first hairstyle was trasformed into an up-do with airy texture

chignons on the side. In the end a softer and more romantic look led to shaping a messy wavy braid, thus creating a perfect harmony and a pleasant union of clothing and jewelry.

Hair Stylist Domenico Iannibelli attended high level schools for hairdressers and styling academy in Italy and in London, UK. Passion for the world of fashion and great experience in hair styling led him to collaborate with a large Italian manufacturer of professional cosmetics. Additionally to the work in his own studio in Bologna, Italy, Domenico works with his hair stylists’ team “Hair stylist look Iannibelli Team”, which does research and develops new fashion styles, colors and hairstyles for photo shoots, fashion shows and organizes seminars in Italy and abroad. For the first make up was chosen a clear complexion that points out the cheekbones and creates a sharp effect leaving a little room for nuances or indecisions. The focus was to create a penetrating gaze emphasizing the geometrical lines. Tortora color shades get softer and less defined towards the outside, while the shape remains sharp and pointing upwards with a clear eyebrow arch. In the second version of the make up the key element is the eyes, where the look is emphasized with black

THE MAKE UP Eva Mardhaja, the make up artist: I’ve been working as a make up artist for 3 years already with various fashion photographers, for editorials, advertising, fashion projects & runway shows. I never get tired of creativity that surrounds me everytime with the splash of positive energy and enthusiasm, like in this project where the team and the collaboration is the key ingredient for the creation of exciting results. shadows drawing geometric lines that extend outward in a very precise way. The point of the light now is set on the eyelid making the contrast even stronger. The glance is cutting edge, even the lips disappear in order to highlight the defined lines and the impact of the shadows.

SUMMER TASTE

THE BLUE LAGOON

The original blue lagoon drink recipe is said to have been invented at Harry’s New York Bar. This popular bar drink has been around for years with many bars coming up their own variations. During summer holidays or after a long, hard day at work, get yourself a wonderful refreshing drink, reminiscent of a gentle summer sea. Original Blue Lagoon Ingredients: 2 oz Vodka 1 oz Blue Curaçao Lemonade Ice Cherry, for garnish Procedure: in a highball glass, add ice in the bottom (quantity depends on you). Pour in the vodka and Blue Curacao over the ice. Now fill the glass with lemonade and mix all the ingredients properly. Put a cherry on top for garnish and serve chilled.
