HIGHLIGHTS 2013/2014
Editorial
Dear Friends of Birkhäuser, We take great pleasure in writing these lines today. It‘s been more than a year since Birkhäuser found a new home within the De Gruyter Publishing Group, and our colleagues in Basel and Berlin have worked with great dedication on bringing the company‘s portfolio back on its feet after being hard hit by the company‘s insolvency. The most important development: almost all titles back to 2005 are now available as eBooks.
4
Despite the changes that have occurred in past months, we remain dedicated to quality and innovation in publishing – a Birkhäuser hallmark from the very beginning. This catalog contains a total of 240 titles from our backlist, as well as 32 new titles appearing in 2013 and 12 highlight publications that have experienced continuous demand – a sign that we have met the expectations of our readers. We would like to draw your attention in particular to the handbook „Designing Interior Architecture“, which offers a comprehensive overview of the field of interior design, much like our reference work for architecture and landscape architecture, „Constructing Architecture“ and „Constructing Landscape“.
We thank you for remaining true to Birkhäuser, and hope you enjoy browsing this catalog.
P.S.: We always look forward to hearing your opinions about our books. You can write us directly at: ulrich.schmidt@birkhauser.ch and sven.fund@birkhauser.ch

The indispensable reference work for everyone interested in Herzog & de Meuron
11
With more than 3700 color and blackand-white illustrations, plans, and sketches
The Basel based architecture practice of Herzog & De Meuron incontestably holds a leading position in contemporary architecture. Their projects are distinguished by a sensitive treatment of materials for which the architects are renowned. In addition, the Pritzker Prize–winning architects have developed a topographical conception of architecture that not only locates their buildings in a larger context, but also frequently structures them as landscapes themselves. The four volumes published so far extensively document all their projects which were started between 1978 and 2001, and are an indispensable reference work for architects. The fifth volume of the complete works is planned for 2015/2016.

Analysis of sustainable international apartment blocks with emphasis on town-planning integration and internal organization The ideal complement to typology+
15
Concepts and solutions for changing needs
High-quality residential structures are much more than merely a series of different floor plans. First and foremost, the urban apartment house mediates between the private refuge and the public space of the city. In the process, boundaries between inside and outside are negotiated on a wide variety of scales. Housing+ focuses on investigating spatial and architectural as well as social and communicative interfaces in residential construction. The publication is divided into four chapters – ‚Urban Planning‘, ‚The Ground Floor‘, ‚Building Structure‘ and ‚Façade‘ – to which sixty-seven international projects are assigned. These four thematic focuses are discussed comprehensively in the essays that introduce the chapters; the individual projects are analyzed in brief texts in the catalog under these same aspects. Comparable plans drawn especially for this book supplement the typological descriptions. The spectrum of projects selected covers urban apartment block construction from towers, block structures, row houses, and gaps between buildings to housing complexes in outlying urban areas.

With new floor plan diagrams that make floor plan concepts even clearer and easier to grasp
This design manual for housing documents and analyzes some 130 international residential structures from the last fifty years. From the standardized floor plans of the 1960s to the more individual concepts of the 1980s and the changed requirements and housing types of recent years, examplary structures by famous and lesser known architects from throughout the world showcase the tremendous variety of possible designs. The categorization of projects from a town planning perspective is supplemented by the detailed typological description of the relevant housing types. Every project is presented with its typical floor plans to a scale of 1:200; sections, site plans, and photographs illuminate each building’s structure and situation. The current edition contains figure-ground diagrams that highlight the most salient features of the floor plans, making them even easier to compare.

Systematically presented, with many international examples
Textile architecture has been captivating humanity for many centuries. In recent years and decades, the emergence of innovative materials has created new opportunities to utilize this fascinating material in the fields of architecture, interior design, and design. Textiles derive their fascination from the special forms these fabric structures make possible and from their unusual character as soft materials. Together with their functional and structural properties, they possess a range of capabilities equally suitable for spectacular and everyday building tasks. This book deals with technical textiles in three sections: in the first chapter, the material is introduced together with its specific properties; the second chapter deals with its uses in the areas of architecture, textile facades, solar protection, and interior design, with special attention to finishing techniques and construction principles. The third chapter illustrates the various fields of application with a selection of twenty-four international built projects.

All other established textbooks assume a basic knowledge: the BASICS start from zero
The fundamental idea is the starting point of every design. The idea is formulated into the concept; the concept is expressed in the formal language; the form requires a particular material; the space is given shape. Architecture is created. Described in this manner, the design process seems simple and straightforward. But for students of architecture, it is in most cases a difficult learning process. But designing can be learned! What are the conceptual possibilities for finding the first step towards a design idea? What methods can be used to develop the idea and to arrive at an architectural concept? Furthermore, architecture is first and foremost the designing of (indoor) spaces. But how are rooms structured, rather than merely decorated? What role does the use of materials and materiality play? This compilation of the volumes Design Ideas, Design Methods, Materials and Spatial Design in the successful student series Basics now gathers the fundamental topics of architectural design together in one book and thus in one context answers crucial questions concerning the hows and whys of the design process.

A Basics for the hands-on, practical side of the profession The basis for turning the plan into reality
23
All other established foundation books and textbooks assume a basic knowledge: the BASICS start at zero
The core task of the classic architect, in addition to architectural design and planning work, is management of the construction project: from planning operations and tendering, to scheduling and cost planning and construction management. These important practical tasks are usually only covered during studies by one subject: Construction Management or Construction Economics, and thus treated as less significant. But every architect must master these abilities in order to manage and realize his or her own projects successfully. How are the individual processes interrelated? How are professionals networked? How do the different levels of organization function? Because of tight deadlines and strongly interdependent processes, scheduling is an important prerequisite for successful project implementation. Architects have a duty to control all those involved and to procure their services at the right times. Basics Architectural Project Management brings together the successful individual volumes, Project Planning, Tendering, Construction Scheduling, and Site Management from the student series BASICS into one volume, which is completed by the new, not yet published book Construction Budgeting, and answers in one publication the crucial hows and whys of construction.

Current projects and award-winning competition entries by renowned international practices
Urban design is based on planning and design principles that need to meet functional demands on the one hand, but on the other hand bring the design elements together into a distinctive whole. Although designs are almost always dominated by the spirit of the times, the basic compositional principles are, for the most part, timeless. Designing Cities examines the most important design and presentation principles of urban design, using selected historical examples and contemporary international competition entries designed by practices including Foster + Partners, KCAP Architects & Planners, MVRDV, and OMA. At the core of the publication is the question of how the projects were designed and what methods and tools were available to the designer. Qualitative Traits - General Organizing Principles - The Relationship of the Parts to the Whole - “Grid” Design Principle - Urban Building Blocks - The Layout of Development Sites, Building Lots, and Urban Building Blocks - Road Systems - Urban Space - Representation in Urban Design - Parametric Design - Examples of Best Practice

Design of orientation systems and orientation aids
All too often, “orientation systems” are equated with “signs” – and, more often than not, only dealt with after the main design and planning work has already been completed. Frequently, the architectural requirements are the only thing remaining for the information architect to work with. However, an interdisciplinary planning and design process would make more sense. What does the architect have to consider? Or the graphic designer? How can the hierarchy of traffic flows and thus the systematic routing throughout a building be taken into account at an early stage, and what impact does this have on the design? By studying the publication’s comprehensive fundamentals and illustrative practical examples, the designer will become familiar with the complexities of guidance system design. Using successful projects completed over the past few years, this volume presents a wide selection of different implementation possibilities – ranging from the smallest construction project up to complex structures.

Discovering the interplay between the form and structural behaviour of hyperbolic frameworks
Vladimir G. Šuchov, who built the first hyperbolic lattice tower at the end of the 19th century, is considered to be the father of hyperbolic frameworks. This type of structure, which is totally unique in the history of architecture, is known for its superior stability and economic use of materials and, above all, for the striking and unmistakable form of its web-like structures. To this day, Šuchov’s structural support system is still used in a modified form in modern architectural designs such as the support frameworks of skyscrapers. This publication is the first to analyse the interplay between the form and structural behaviour of hyperbolic frameworks. The effects of various factors are determined using parametric studies and load calculations. Analyses of Šuchov’s original calculations, the reconstruction of the design process and the development of water towers show why Šuchov is considered to be a pioneer not only of lightweight construction but of parametric design processes as well.

Combining walls and roofs – material, construction, environmental issues
The second edition of Modern ConstructionEnvelopes was originally based on the two books by Andrew Watts, Modern Construction Roofs and Modern Construction Facades . Both volumes were gathered into one single volume and consolidated in terms of content, which permits the consideration f facades and roofs as envelopes. Using current examples by renowned architects, Watts presents the constructive and material-related details. This presentation is based on a text, photos, and standardized detail drawings, as well as 3D representations of the components. The new edition has 3D views that are easier to understand than the first edition, with sharper images and more key explanations.

Hard facts, personal impressions, richly illustrated
“The Power of Design” provides a compact introduction to the current eleven UNESCO Cities of Design. Each individual city is briefly portrayed with important statistical information and detailed facts relating to its development of design. The highly varied approaches of the individual cities in their use of design as an engine for current and future development are then described in more detail through concrete and well illustrated examples. In addition, there are interviews with designers, activists, organizers and critical observers, which the author conducted either during his travels or through extensive correspondence. The result is a richly illustrated and handy book which combines hard facts with personal impressions and points of view.
