Schinkel – the great architect in his century

English

The 19th-century German architect and artist, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, is among the great personalities in the world of architecture. Transcending the conventions of Classicism and Romanticism with his own original ideas, he shaped the culture of his time. He elevated building to the level of a science with his teaching and publishing, yet neglected neither its poetic qualities nor its eminently practical significance. As a universal scholar and versatile master builder, Schinkel exchanged views with leading personalities from far and wide.

Written by one of the most important art and architectural historians of the present day, the richly illustrated chapters unfold a dialogue between Schinkel as an individual, his oeuvre, the universe in which he lived and his longterm legacy. After eight years, the new volume on the complete works of Herzog & de Meuron is published covering the years 2005 to 2007. The book presents 60 projects, which show the architects at the height of their powers. Their designs encompass the full range of architectural devices and respond to contemporary developments with a wide range of solutions – the designs refine the interaction with the respective site, with projects ranging from a small private conversion project to a studio ensemble, through to residential towers and urban design projects.

For their designs, Herzog & de Meuron again develop new processes and create references to classic modernism just as to their own oeuvre. Architecture becomes a means of providing physical presence and stability in an increasingly virtual world. Gerhard Mack Editor for art, architecture, and design, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and NZZ am Sonntag

All 60 buildings and designs started between 2005 and 2007 Includes Pérez Art Museum Miami, the residential tower 56 Leonard Street, the Actelion buildings and VitraHaus About 1,000 black-and-white and color photographs, drawings, and sketches

The much noted international architects’ practice, Berger + Parkkinen, was founded in 1995 by Alfred Berger and Tiina Parkkinen, with offices in Vienna and Helsinki. The practice has worked on a wide variety of projects, including a private medical university, and a timber residential building (together with querkraft Architects). The designs produced by Berger + Parkkinen are characterized by an uncluttered, elegant urbanity, as well as by an innovative use of materials. The Nordic Embassies in Berlin (1996–1999), for which the practice has received many awards, are some of their most published projects. This first monograph in the form of a bibliophilic, handy book comprises the documentation of about 15 projects, a register of the complete oeuvre, as well as an introductory essay.

Architectural interventions aimed at not only preserving the existing historic built fabric but also developing it with care and with a view to the future are rare. The BatthyányStrattmann and Trauttmansdorff palaces are buildings with an impressive and turbulent history. They have been comprehensively refurbished, restored and extended to suit contemporary requirements. As a contribution towards a vibrant, historic city center, the palaces will not be sold in the context of speculative development but will be let for residential and work purposes. The book recounts the history of the palaces by extensively using sketches, drawings as well as photographic documentation to illustrate the connection between trust funds, architecture, and artistic interpretation as a cultural statement. Timber high-rises: a new urban element

English

Tall Wood buildings have been at the front of innovative building practice in urban contexts for a number of years. From London to Stockholm, from Vancouver to Melbourne timber buildings of up to 18 storeys have been built, structures of up to 40 storeys are being considered. This dynamic trend was enabled by developments in the material itself, prefabrication and more flexibility in fire regulations. The low CO2 footprint of wood – often regionally sourced – is another strong argument in its favour. This publication explains the typical construction types such

as panel systems, frame and hybrid systems. An international selection of 13 case studies is documented in detail with many specially prepared construction drawings, demonstrating the range of the technology. Energy supply as a design task

English

It’s already impossible to imagine energyefficient construction without photovoltaics and solar thermal. Yet, the EU-wide introduction of low energy standards for new buildings stipulates that buildings must meet their energy needs in whole or in part from the sun by 2021 at the latest. The integration of solar systems into buildings is no longer just a technical matter, but also a structural and aesthetic challenge. This book provides the necessary expertise for this purpose. For some time now, the subject of cooperation in the context of development aid has featured in the education of architects. However, up to now there have hardly been any attempts to critically place the work of architects and urban designers in this context. The book highlights the architectural consequences of humanitarian actions on the basis of three case studies – in Port-au-Prince, the West Bank, and Nairobi. The authors analyze twelve projects in terms of typology and construction and establish a differentiated position in the discourse on short-term housing for emergency situations. They investigate the far-reaching effects of such architectural aid and supply architects, town planners, and NGOs with useful advice for future planning and design.

This in-depth study, based on the author’s intimate familiarity of the local scene and supplemented by her critical outsider’s insights, describes the strategies, players, and processes of a uniquely Chinese model of urban transformation. Concepts like “Urban Loopholes”, “Preservation via inhabitation”, and “Gentrification with Chinese characteristics” characterize the specific mechanisms for urban development in Shanghai. Urban Loopholes invites the reader to rethink the necessity of urban resilience in the face of globalization’s impact for change.

The increasing accumulation of people in living machines without history and the challenges presented by migration and the lack of space provoke a need for new thinking and acting in public spaces. SUPERSUIT is an interdisciplinary experiment at the demarcation between people and space. It is a tool for poetic interventions in a range of different urban situations that invites participation and queries the relationship between people, space and city in terms of sense perception. As a marker of public space, the spontaneously arising forms of SUPERSUIT respond directly to the parameters of urban context. Using the means of “performative interventions” SUPERSUIT facilitates a change in current design processes and the conceptualizing of new people/material constellations. The book is a documentation of the Architectural Prize of the State of Styria, which is well known beyond Austria’s borders. The prize is awarded every two years in cooperation with the respected Haus der Architektur in Graz. The buildings are selected by internationally known architects. This year, the submissions were reviewed by Tina Gregoric (dekleva gregoric architects). She has recently been awarded the “best architects 16 award”. The bibliophilic design of the book was produced by the outstanding designer Paulus Dreibholz, who has received the State Prize for one of the most beautiful Austrian books. The generously illustrated book presents the nominated buildings with text, drawings, and photographs.

In the 19th-century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents. “Motherland and Progress” – the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers – reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future. Werner Blaser is one of the best-known architectural critics of recent decades. He has published over 100 books in which – using narratives, photographs, and drawings – he has documented the oeuvre of important architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Foster, Piano, and Calatrava. In Synthesis he recounts his encounters with architects, designers, and artists, and their work as well as his encounters with traditional and vernacular architecture – in the Ticino in Switzerland and far-flung places such as Siberia, China, and Japan. Using collages, the book also illustrates design relationships between East and West, and between traditional and contemporary architecture. In this way an “archi-text collage” (Jakob Bill) has been created which nevertheless justifies the title Synthesis.

Throughout the centuries, Norway’s architecture has been influenced by the regional availability of resources, changing social conditions, and architectural stylistic stimuli. The authors have produced an interdisciplinary presentation of Norwegian architectural history on the basis of current research. They recount the story and analyze its development – from the first Stone Age buildings and the famous stave churches to the industrialization and urbanization phases of the last century and the modern buildings of the 21st century, such as the Oslo opera house by Snøhetta. A detailed discussion highlights the influence of the original vernacular architecture on the development of the art of building in different epochs and under varying circumstances. Constructing Material

English

Materiality is a recurring and key issue in architecture. This book explains how materials are “constructed”, how they become substances of our culture. Metamorphism follows up on the relationship between natural materials and technology, science, and sensuality. Gottfried Semper (1803–1879) made the concept of metabolic processes the key element of his theory. He referred to the fact that architectural forms originally resulting from a method of processing a material are used for other substances.

Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. However, they must meet the requirements of flood control, open space design and ecology at the same time, often a challenge for the designer. This book is the product of extensive research that identified some 60 best-practice examples and subjected them to a comparative analysis. The result is a systematic catalog of effective strategies and innovative design tools that provides readers with an inspiring overview of the broad spectrum of design possibilities for river spaces. Each project is illustrated with photographs taken especially for the book and each design strategy and tool is explained by diagrams. This revised edition introduces ten new case studies chiefly from North America.

On the occasion of Graz UNESCO City of Design, the Joanneum University organizes an annual lecture series with high-profile speakers. It focuses on different aspects of the international discourse on design. For the first time, a symposium has been organized as part of this event. The presentations provide the material for the SocioDesign book. While the gleaming aesthetics of commercial goods conspire to form a modern “ego image”, there is – beyond the pressure to consume – a development that focuses on the social relevance of design relating to cultural objects: in these times of social change, Socio Design is increasingly garnering attention. The book documents six design contributions which have a stabilizing and balancing effect owing to a new arrangement of social interactions. With Design is Invisible, Lucius Burckhardt was one of the first to point out that factors that are invisible can be integrated – they determine the use of objects and should be part of the design. What is the use of the most attractive tramway if it does not operate at night? Burkhardt expands on the meaning of design, in this case by including the timetable, which can also be optimized. The relevance of these articles dating from between 1965 and 1999 can be appreciated today in the current debate on architecture. Problems arising from social polarization, rural depopulation, and migration can only be resolved on an interdisciplinary basis. The articles, for the first time available in English, finally allow access to key source texts for the purpose of international debate.

In Crowd-Design, the author analyses the workings and the rhetoric of crowdsourced work platforms by comparing the way they address the masses today with historic notions of the crowd. The concepts of early online collaboration are taken as a vantage point from which to view and critique current applications of crowdsourced work. ManfreDu Schu works as an artist beyond all traditional genres. His artistic output has a strong philosophical content and is expressed in performances, music, installations, and painting; it combines biology with the rituals of music and fashion. His installations deconstruct life as a performing event and expose the clichéd nature of sexuality. In the search for new forms of expression, much of his output focuses on life’s contradictions, unverbalized taboos of being human, and the double life we all lead. In an exceptionally well presented format, this first monograph provides a comprehensive and unrivalled overview over ManfreDu Schu’s multi-faceted artistic oeuvre.

The publication provides a comprehensive overview of the work produced by the Austrian sculptor Roland Reiter. The artist uses the experiences made on his journey through life by sublimating, or enlarging and dramatizing the events. His art is not a cool abstraction; instead, one of its characteristics is that it captures the emotional, “expressive” moment. It combines materials that do not fit together in a traditional sense but nevertheless supplement each other in terms of contemporary art practice. He uses this dichotomy to create a tension that seems to satisfy a particular kind of voyeurism. One could, paradoxically, make these two statements: “Even though I am intrigued, I turn away”, or “I turn towards it even though I feel put off and alienated”. The contributions to this book explore a phenomenon that appears to be a contradiction in itself – we computer users can be tracked in digital space for all eternity. Although, on the one hand, one wants to be noticed, on the other hand one does not necessarily want to be recognized at the first instance, being prey to an unfathomable public, or – even less so – to lose face. The book documents artistic and other strategies that point out options for appearing in the infinite book of faces whilst nevertheless avoiding being included in any records. The desire not to become a mere object of facial sell-out does not just remain an aesthetic endeavor. The contributions also contain combative and sarcastic statements against a digital dynamic that has already penetrated our everyday lives.

Artists who work with new media generally adopt a critical media approach in contrast to artists who work with traditional art media. Where does the difference lie between media artists and artists who produce modern art? Which key art objects illustrate this trend? The author investigates the relationship between art and technology on the basis of work produced by Edward Ihnatowicz and Harald Cohen, and on the basis of the pioneering computer art exhibition at Dokumenta X in 1997. His line of argument counters the generally held view that computer art straddles the gap between art and technology. Instead, he is seeking a genuine interpretation of the origin of media art, and to develop new perspectives for it.

The word “fluid” describes a phenomenon as well as a material property. Of special interest is how aspects of fluidity influence the active and direct handling of materials and how its special characteristics are expressed in experimental practices and thinking patterns. The motivation for focusing on fluidity as a prerequisite for “becoming” and the nature of processes originated from the art-based “Liquid Things” research project. As this subject covers a very wide spectrum, the approach was modified to allow the participation of several disciplines; the book draws on the philosophy of science, hydrodynamics, and the cultural sciences, and focuses on the role of fluidity in cognitive and experience processes with the aim of establishing a grammar of “movable” materials. The success of Winckelmann’s Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums (1763) has obscured very different ways of writing the history of sculpture in the eighteenth century. These alternative views were developed in the context of critical appraisals of religion influenced by the Enlightenment movement. They reconstructed the origins of sculpture in primitive cults from a global, anthropological perspective, and showed how statues slowly evolved from idols and fetishes to works of fine art, the object of aesthetic contemplation. This book is the first to reconstruct these alternative historical accounts, and to connect the historiography of sculpture with its exhibition history.

In 16th-century Venice, paintings were often treated as living beings. As this book shows, they attended dinner parties, healed the sick, made money, and became involved in love affairs. On the basis of case studies, Elsje van Kessel offers a detailed examination of the agency paintings and other two-dimensional images could exert. This lifelike agency is not only connected to the seemingly naturalistic style of these images. It is also brought in relation to their social-historical contexts, meticulously unraveled through archival research. Grounded in the theoretical literature on the agency of material things, the book contributes to Venetian studies as well as engaging with wider debates on the attribution of life and presence to images and objects. Current developments in the digital organization of knowledge give rise to an in-depth study in the humanities of the history of the cultural practice of capturing and storing information. This interdisciplinary anthology discusses current research issues on historical theories and practices of information processing in art history research. Using examples from the period between the end of the 17th century and the early 19th century, the contributions investigate how in Europe new ideas of storing knowledge and processing data were reflected in the fine arts and arts theory during this critical period of competing methods of capturing information.

The historiography of early photography has scarcely examined Islamic countries in the Near and Middle East, although the new technique was adopted very quickly there by the 1840s. Which regional, local, and global aspects can be made evident? What role did autochthonous image and art traditions have, and which specific functions did photography meet since its introduction? This collective volume deals with examples from Iran, the Ottoman Empire, and the Arab lands and with the question of local specifics, or an “indigenous lens.” The contributions broach the issues of regional histories of photography, local photographers, specific themes and practices, and historical collections in these countries. They offer a cross-section through a developing field of the history of photography. Markus Ritter University of Vienna Staci Gem Scheiwiller California State University Stanislaus, Turlock

BUILDING DESIGN: FROM RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS TO AIRPORTS

Planning Architecture

Dimensions and Typologies October 2016 | 568 pp. | 1200 figs. Hardcover RRP EUR 119.95 / US$ 149.95 / GBP 89.99 ISBN 978-3-0356-0323-1 Paperback RRP EUR 69.95 / US$ 84.95 / GBP 52.99 ISBN 978-3-0356-0324-8

In formulating a design concept into a viable plan, architects oscillate constantly between two planes of observation: the actual design task in the context of planning typologies such as residential buildings, office buildings, museum, or airport, and the individual room, meaning the kitchen, office, classroom, sanitary rooms, storage rooms, and so on. Planning Architecture offers architects and students a thoughtout planning tool, in which two main sections reciprocally complement one another: the “spaces” and the “typologies” between which the planner can flexibly oscillate depending on his or her plane of observation. These two sections are flanked by an introductory chapter explaining the basis and framework for typological design, as well as a “reference section” at the end of the book that clearly lists general dimensions and units, regulations and standards.
