Numerous plan drawings and historical photographs

How to deal with historic buildings has long been a core issue of the international architectural discourse. Herzog & de Meuron began addressing the potential of existing structures very early on: the maintenance and alteration of buildings areamong the key strategies of the architects. For the Park Avenue Armory in New York, Herzog & de Meuron have designed a new model for dealing with monuments. The historical building was opened in 1881 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan as a meeting place and training ground for the National Guard, and boasts a rich mixture of different styles. Herzog & de Meuron developed a multifaceted strategy for the transformation of the building, now used as a cultural center, that allows for a combination of restoration, transformation, and innovation. From the exposing of historic structures to the addition of new elements, the architecture gained new vibrancy from the considered entanglement of different aspects. In the current debate, this departure from the practice of historic preservation in the United States is, beyond its value as an actual example, a unique contribution that unfolds in close reference to material. It is exemplary and groundbreaking.

Outstanding reception in the specialized press

This internationally prizewinning volume now appears in its third, revised and expanded edition. Since the first edition was published in 2005, it has been adopted as a textbook at many universities. Organized into chapters on building materials (“Materials– Modules”), building components (“Elements” and “Components”), building methods (“Structures”), and building examples (“Buildings”) the book now includes a new section on stairs and lifts as well as one on structural shell, fitting out and premium structural shell. The chapter “Structures” now comprises information about the typologies of “courtyard house vs. veranda house”. Furthermore, the examples section has been expanded to cover three new projects, whose designing processes are documented comprehensively and systematically, step by step. Experience with the preceding edition has shown that the book has become an indispensable handbook for reference and reading. Not only for students and teachers but also for architects.

Concrete’s multifaceted nature has made it very popular today with planners and builders. Besides the enormous potential inherent in its load-bearing capacity, the material offers a diversity of properties and surface characteristics. This publication focuses not just on the design and construction of concrete load-bearing structures, but also especially on concrete’s material characteristics and thus on the haptic and sensual side of this material. The Modern Concrete Construction Manual provides planners with expert information on concrete as a construction material, ranging from manufacturing to material characteristics, to the design of concrete load-bearing structures, including details on current digital design and production process options. Designed as a standard reference work, the publication offers comprehensive and detailed insights into a range of topics, including cost-effectiveness, energy and sustainability, renovation, design and interior design. An extensive index of successful projects, with a selection of real-life examples, provides inspiration, while inviting readers to make modern use of this classic construction material.

Analysis of sixty-seven international projects with emphasis on townplanning integration and internal organization

High-quality residential structures are much more than merely a series of different floor plans. First and foremost, the urban apartment house mediates between the private refuge and the public space of the city. In the process, boundaries between inside and outside are negotiated on a wide variety of scales. Housing+ focuses on investigating spatial and architectural as well as social and communicative interfaces in residential construction. The publication is divided into four chapters: Urban Planning, The Ground Floor, Building Structure, and Faรงade, to which sixty-seven international projects are assigned. These four thematic focuses are discussed comprehensively in the essays that introduce the chapters, and the individual projects are analyzed in brief texts in the catalog under these same aspects. Comparable plans drawn especially for this book supplement the typological descriptions. The spectrum of projects selected covers urban apartment block construction from towers, block structures, row houses, and gaps between buildings to housing complexes in outlying urban areas.

With systematic and practiceoriented project documentation

The “old material of wood has been used to construct dwellings of different types since the dawn of mankind. And not without reason. Its low density combined with high rigidity, good processability, and its resistance makes it an excellent building material. There is currently a pioneering renaissance of the timber construction, for two distinct reasons: first, wood is increasingly being rediscovered as one of the most important renewable raw materials for sustainable construction. Moreover, a revolution in the construction of timber structures began several years ago with the ever-progressive use of threedimensional CAD models for digitally controlled robot manufacturing The book documents these developments, in particular the engineering bonding techniques, the introduction of digital production techniques, and the innovative material developments of this material. The chapter on composite structures and experimental structures specifically address trends toward the futureoriented dimensions of timber construction. In the final section, outstanding designs are documented in detail, such as the Club House of Haesley Nine Bridges Golf Course designed by Shigeru Ban in Yeoju, South Korea, and the double gymnasium in Borex-Crassier, Switzerland, by Graeme Mann and Patricia Capua Mann.

Comments on selected projects illustrate and provide clear explanations

What is the process of forming rooms, which elements are used and how are room-shaping components defined? The fourth volume in the SCALE series, Furnishing | Zoning, deals with the relationships between building typology and building structure, and between spatial composition and interior design. The interdependence between the briefing and the catalogue of requirements, and between shell construction and fit-out, is elucidated. Connections at walls, ceilings and floors are explained in detail and illustrated with case studies of selected projects. In addition, the authors demonstrate how a well-designed sequence of spaces can create added value by means, for example, of the choice of materials and the lighting scheme, or adaptability to accommodate new functions. Following the introductory chapter on the subject of space, the olume is divided into chapters on floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture and fixtures. Furnishing | Zoning examines the subject from different professional angles and thereby provides valuable support for practical interior design.

Coherent educational concept

23

Indispensable tool for first year students

At the beginning of their studies, students of architecture are confronted with a wealth of different ways in which to visually present their designs. Expressing ideas in the form of drawings and models is usually required in the early stages of studying: “learning by doing is the only way for students to quickly develop a repertoire for their design work. However, there are important issues to consider between the phases of devising the spatial concept and recreating it in a two- or three-dimensional drawing or physical model: How to construct a perspective freehand drawing? What plan drawings are necessary to present my design? What scale should my model be and what materials should I use to construct it? Basics Architectural Presentation combines the highly successful single volumes Technical Drawing, CAD, Modelbuilding, Architectural Photography and Freehand Drawing from the series BASICS. Step-by-step, it conveys possible ways to present architectural projects throughout the various project phases. In an informative and practical approach, the publication discusses the basics of architectural representation from freehand drawing, which is especially important in the design phase, to the plan drawing, model, and architecture photography. The student architect learns the tools necessary for presenting his or her work, supported by many concrete examples and practical tips that are directly applicable.

Design of spatial atmospheres

Colours have the power to stir emotions and awaken memories. Artists are not unique in their use of colour; scientists, psychologists, designers, writers and others also understand the power of colour. For the architect, selecting colours can be one of their most challenging tasks, yet one that can achieve tremendous impact when professionally implemented. DETAIL Practice Colour provides architects with the relevant expertise necessary for working with colours: from colour theory and the fundamentals of colour perception and effect, to strategies for developing coherent colour concepts during the design process. Colours in urban and rural settings, historical considerations, as well as detailed information on spatial effects, materiality and the influence of light, round out the theoretical part of the publication. Various examples of international projects realised in both interior and exterior spaces illustrate the successful implementation of architecture and can provide inspiration for your own work.

The ground plan manual for urban squares

The question of composition and spatial qualities arises in every urban design concept or intervention in the spatial structure of urban public squares. How are the essential elements involved: dimension, proportion, alignment, cohesion, accesses, shaping of focus point and of edges like surfaces and materials? How do they contribute to a character of urban space with which residents can identify? Comparing historical examples with current designs aids one in visualizing spatial effect. Similar to a floor plan manual for buildings, Squares allows the user to evaluate spatial conditions for movement and rest, based on comparable existing urban squares. The book offers the planner a comparative example for most conditions (shape, size, location, topography, and so on). Seventy European urban squares are presented and explained with the most important characteristics in a consistent manner in as-built plan, ground plan, section, and axonometric projection.

Information is clearly presented and easily accessible

When developing a design concept in a realizable plan, landscape architects oscillate between two different levels of criteria: the tangible design task in context with the planning typology of the park, playground, outdoor swimming pool, or sports facilities, and the individual elements such as steps, ramps, pathways, fenced-in enclosures, outdoor furniture, and so on. Planning Landscape is a well-conceived tool for the planner, which focuses on the two main aspects of “elements” and “typologies.” The planner can flexibly shift between these two according to the specific criterion. The publication presents all information relevant to the planning in a detailed, clear, and cohesive manner. These two main chapters are flanked by an introductory chapter explaining the basics and determining factors of designing in open spaces at the front of the book, and the appendix at the end of the book where general dimensions and units, specifications and norms are all clearly compiled.

An attractive tool for ideas

31

Adequate presentation in sketches by the authors

“What does the landscape architect actually do as a design?” The authors investigate this seemingly simple question: What resources are available for designing open spaces? What part is played by conditions deriving from nature? How are locations and spaces created in the open air, how are paths routed and boundaries set, how are hard and soft materials used? Drawing on practical and theoretical experience, this introduction, often used as a textbook, reveals the central components of design and the intellectual paths followed in the design process. “The book is not so much for reading but for doing. It plays with shapes, imagining how people feel in these shapes and seeing how shapes create a different experience of landscape. Vegetation can make the relief of a hill clearer, less clear, indistinct or hidden. The authors show this by sketches illustrating the text … As an example of the way Loidl and Bernard set their readers thinking for themselves, I quote what they regard as good design: “The paradox of a good design solution: more uniformity needs more variety. Food for thought. Or read Open(ing) Spaces.” (Martin Woestenburg in ’scape, 2006)

New: the index makes Frutiger’s achievements even more accessible

The international creation of typefaces after 1950 was decisively influenced by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. His Univers typeface and the machine-readable font OCR-B, which was adopted as an ISO standard, are milestones, as is his type for the Paris airports, which set new standards for signage types and evolved into the Frutiger typeface. With his corporate types, he helped to define the public profiles of companies such as the Japanese Shiseido line of cosmetics. In all he created some fifty types, including Ondine, Méridien, Avenir and Vectora. Based on conversations with Frutiger himself and on extensive research in France, England, Germany, and Switzerland, this publication provides a highly detailed and accurate account of the type designer’s artistic development. All of his types—from the design phase to the marketing stage—are illustrated and analyzed with reference to the technology and related types. Hitherto unpublished types that were never realized and more than one hundred logos complete the picture. This second, revised and expanded study edition, which now has an index, makes Frutiger’s achievement even more accessible.

The entire ouevre of the artist

The present volume offers a comprehensive retrospective of all presently known three-dimensional works by Oswald Oberhuber. It does not make any claim of being complete, and also must remain an attempt: an “attempt” because several factors make it impossible to actually grasp all of the sculptural works. In the specific case of Oberhuber, there is also the additional problem of defining the works, not to mention the fact that an indeterminable number of works have been destroyed. The volume, with more than 1,000 objects, covers all creative periods from the artist’s beginnings to the present day. Such an overview is necessary to make fully clear the essence of Oberhuber’s work concept, which remains concealed behind fragmentary elements when viewing a single piece. We have thus been able to prove, for the first time, that in a conscious, artistic act Oberhuber sawed apart several plasters from his early informal phase believed to have been lost. The individual pieces remained unrecognized for quite some time in what are, de facto, separate sculptures. Fragmentation without visible fragment: yet not simply a deliberate act of confusion! Instead, it is a hidden challenge to beholders, and also, fundamentally, to the public, and an essential intellectual aspect of the oeuvre. Oswald Oberhuber’s motto for his entire creation, “One arrives at art only through seeing,” can thus be understood as a universal appeal for keen attention and observation.
