Far beyond its long-standing decorative and protective use, architectural ceramics has matured into a material system of great potential. Triggered by material research, design computation and digital fabrication methods, the innovations in ceramic technology are enabling expanded applications for ceramics as a multi-functional, performative material system. Ceramic material systems comprise the full ecosystem from material extraction and processing to the assembly of construction elements and their eventual reuse and recycling. This book establishes the state of the art of this quickly emerging field, with a particular interest in presenting the knowledge needed for developing project-specific solutions that often involve custom ceramic elements. The authors provide a rigorous background of the materials and associated technologies as well as inspiration from the very best contemporary buildings using ceramic systems, along with an overview of emerging ceramic technologies and research. The main section of the book is supplemented with a descriptive and critically commented listing of the most interesting and innovative ceramic products on the market today, ranging from interior tile products to complex active façade systems and roof products.

This book provides the means for a better control and purposeful consideration of the design of Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS). It deploys a detailed categorization of AESS and its uses according to design context, building typology and visual exposure. In a rare combination, this approach makes high quality benchmarks compatible with economies in terms of material use, fabrication methods, workforce and cost. Building with exposed steel has become more and more popular worldwide, also as advances in fire safety technology have permitted its use for building tasks under stringent fire regulations. On her background of long standing as a teacher in architectural steel design affiliated with many institutions, the author ranks among the world‘s best scholars on this topic. Among the fields covered by the extensive approach of this book are the characteristics of the various categories of AESS, the interrelatedness of design, fabrication and erection of the steel structures, issues of coating and protection (including corrosion and fire protection), special materials like weathering steel and stainless steel, the member choices and a connection design checklist. The description draws on many international
examples from advanced contemporary architecture, all visited and photographed by the author, among which figure buildings like the Amgen Helix Bridge in Seattle, the Shard Observation Level in London, the New York Times Building and the Arganquela Footbridge. Best Practice in international steel architecture High-quality, cost-effective solutions A compendium of detailed solutions

The building shell – functional, efficient and aesthetic
English
The building shell is the interface with the outside world, it offers protection and at the same time represents its owners or occupants. But what are the criteria for choosing a specific shell? Why is a particular material used on a particular undercoat? The fifth volume of the SCALE series, Enclose | Build, is not about the curtain, the dressing of the facade that surrounds a building, but rather on a causal level about the exterior termination of a building, the wall, the facade, which can be made of various materials, surfaces, and achieves different design effects. It shows the conditions under which certain constructions can be employed and why; what criteria such as construction costs, issues of sustainability, of energy efficiency, of assembly or of insulation or protection against moisture can also influence the choice of a system. In addition to classical
constructions, Enclose | Build offers a look at future developments. How will the facade evolve as an interface for information? What do viable concepts for environmentally active, energy-efficient building shells look like? Enclose | Build is an indispensable tool for every architect and planner. Editors: Prof. Alexander Reichel, Reichel Architekten BDA, Kassel; Prof. Kerstin Schultz, liquid architekten, Reichelsheim

Building for the future today
English
What makes building materials sustainable? How to reduce the amount of embodied energy in building construction and how does a Life Cycle Analysis work? These are questions which are becoming increasingly more common in the context of sustainable construction. The DETAIL Green Book Sustainable Construction Techniques offers a thorough guide to ecological building design and sustainable construction methods, which will be particularly valuable for architects. The authors provide an overview of the most relevant databases and certification standards for building products and illustrate how a Life Cycle Analysis is conducted. They also identify key ways of optimising the planning process in line with ecological criteria, while offering advice for the selection of building materials and elements.
Detailed documentation from five buildings constructed in Europe and North America serve to illustrate the associated assessment processes in this book. Sebastian El khouli, Bob Gysin + Partner BGP Architekten, Zürich; Viola John, ETH Zürich; Martin Zeumer, ee concept, Darmstadt.

A key issue of sustainable design
English
“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover” is the sustainable guideline that has replaced the “Take, Make, Waste” attitude of the industrial age. Based on their background at the ETH Zurich and the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, the authors provide both a conceptual and practical look into materials and products which use waste as a renewable resource. This book introduces an inventory of current projects and building elements, ranging from marketed products, among them façade panels made of straw and self-healing concrete, to advanced research and development like newspaper, wood or jeans denim used as isolating fibres. Going beyond the mere recycling aspect of reused materials, it looks into innovative concepts of how materials usually regarded as waste can be processed into new construction elements.
The products are organized along the manufacturing processes: densified, reconfigured, transformed, designed and cultivated materials. A product directory presents all materials and projects in this book according to their functional uses in construction: load-bearing, self-supporting, insulating, waterproofing and finishing products. This publication takes a look at the rooms where wine is tasted and enjoyed. It highlights a variety of projects, ranging from winemakers’ tasting rooms and salesrooms to more unusual shop concepts and successful examples taken from the gastronomy sector. To provide a glimpse into the development of a design, the authors engage intensively with the architects and contractors to explore the following questions: How did those involved contribute and combine their ideas? What story is told by the project as it begins to take shape? What kind of customers does it appeal to and how should they react to it? Additional essays illustrate how designs are influenced by functional factors, as well as the role played by materials, colour, light, and indeed the spatial concept as a whole in the process of wine tasting.

Design interventions for the reuse of existing structures must face the question of the past and the extent to which it should be included in the design for the future. This is the point of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on current issues in international adaptive reuse. Where the creative industries cater to enhanced consumption, they are able to produce growth even in times of global economic decline. Such interventions, therefore, raise an immediate interest. The design and production of experience has focused on unprecedented spatial encounters. From innovative tourism to hospitality, retail and culture, the creation of such experience often originates from inimitable settings. This volume of Int | AR presents built and unbuilt projects and ideas that uncover the hidden potential of existing spaces, buildings and structures, empty and unmarked, so as to gain new qualitative, and therefore economic, value for the production of new experience.

All-in-one compendium: the four successful volumes on housing typology
English
The systematic development of building types is an important task in housing construction. A deeper understanding of the underlying building types is mandatory, both for individual designs and for the wider application and variation of tried-and-tested structures. The authors have developed an innovative, drawing-based approach to unfolding the potentials of several existing building types for the future of urban housing. The first part is dedicated to the courtyard house, in which the courtyard is used as a private outside living space. The second part deals with the popular form of the terraced house and discusses aspects like corner solutions or terraced developments as an urban design element. In the third part, the townhouse is discussed with view to variants such as single-story and apartment buildings, including aspects of privacy and public
access, as well as living and working. Finally, the detached house is considered in its typological potential to provide all-directional orientation of the living space. The array of solutions is visualized consistently in floorplans and crosssections drawn to scale. In a new introduction to this all-in-one compendium, the authors discuss the implication of the typological approach to today's housing design. Günter Pfeifer is Professor of Design and Housing, and a practicing architect. Per Brauneck is a practicing architect.

Despite a growing trend towards sharing, and an increasing number of single family households combined with a growing need for flexibility, the individual single family home remains an extremely popular choice. In addition to following building guidelines, private single family homes are also expected to fulfill high standards when it comes to energy, and often cost efficiency. Nevertheless, they continue to provide considerable scope for architects and designers. Best of DETAIL: Single family homes brings together a collection of relevant highlights from DETAIL. The publication is made up of theoretical articles and a comprehensive section containing examples of projects which provide unique insights into the various applications of wood, concrete or masonry in a range of passive houses, bungalows, double- and semi-detached houses, and villas with swimming pools, from the simple to the luxurious. What these projects have in common is an ambitious aesthetic quality, which can be summed up as good architecture, providing readers with a great deal of inspiration and constructive solutions for their own practice.

Color as creative element
English
Color is inextricably linked with architecture; as a design element and also as an inherent quality, it characterizes the shape and texture of the built fabric. The book presents extraordinary color schemes, both in terms of technology and aesthetics, for ground-breaking architecture with a wide spectrum of functions: from apartment to concert hall, from flagship store to city park. The focus is on the works of the three architects Frank O. Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Wang Shu. This is expanded by the works of other practices such as BIG, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito and SANAA.
This publication is a compendium that documents color schemes in architecture in the context of very different aesthetic approaches. The large-format photographs by Iwan Baan, Christian Richters, Roland Halbe and Philippe Ruault fascinate with their clarity and presence. Erik Mattie is an advisor to local and provincial governments in the Netherlands in the field of architecture and urbanism.
Gehry, Nouvel and Shu are all recipients of the Pritzker Prize With fascinating images by Iwan Baan and Christian Richters

The Vienna Main Railroad Station and its architecture Austria’s capital receives a new transport hub: The Vienna Main Railroad Station. The book introduces the railroad station, with essays, planning drafts and photographs. It gives the reader a documentation that offers insights into the construction and operational phases of the stations as well as a look back at the existing structures before construction. The construction of Vienna Main Station also led to a fundamental transformation of the urban area between Wiedner Gürtel, Arsenalstraße, Gudrunstraße and Sonnwendgasse. The books shows the first parts of these changes in the Belvedere neighborhood, the ÖBB headquarters and the Erste Campus, as well as the residential and the educational campus in the Sonnwendviertel area, including vistas of future projects. Sigi Herzog’s photographs as well as historical views complement photographs by Roman Bönsch. A site plan and planning graphics of the rail lines and construction phases round off this generous and representative illustrated volume.

HAUPTBAHNHOF WIEN Karl-Johann Hartig
VIENNA MAIN STATION Karl-Johann Hartig

From 1977 until his retirement in 1999, Wilhelm Holzbauer was Head of one of the three master classes for architecture at University of Applied Arts Vienna. His teaching activity was supported by a number of Assistant Lecturers and Assistants, amongst them Dimitris Manikas, Heiner Fürst, Ernst Mayr, Roman Delugan and others. Under the tuition of this fortuitous constellation of teachers, the students created fantasy projects and designs for actual construction projects current at the time, some of which were overtaken by events and some of which are still current today. Some of the students from that time are now recognized architects (e.g. Carlo Baumschlager, Roman Delugan, Hubert Hermann, Ernst Mayr, Francy Valentiny, Susanne Zottl and many others) and have numerous completed buildings to their name. This publication compares the student designs of these architects with those of their current work.

Low-tech: office building without heating system The “haus 2226” project was completed in 2013 and received an outstanding response from the media. The reason is the clever design of this office building - it manages completely without air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems. “If today we are installing a disproportionate amount of air- and water-based services in buildings in order to create comfortable conditions, we should ask ourselves whether there are not more effective methods”, says Dietmar Eberle. His building demonstrates that low-tech is an alternative to the Passivhaus with its extensive services installations. However, ecological and economical building should also meet architectural criteria - proportion, spatial effect, surface texture and light are essential components affecting the comfort of users.
The book documents this seminal model for a new architecture with a comprehensive range of photographs by Eduard Hueber, and uses drawings to explain the architectural and energy concepts. Knowledgeable essays by recognized experts on the perfectly balanced construction and function complete this unpretentious and yet sophisticated monograph of a building.

How to design supertalls
English
With nearly 80 years of experience in integrating architecture and engineering, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s (SOM) work remains groundbreaking, especially when it comes to designing supertalls. Besides addressing the question of “how high can you go”, as well as the issues of efficiency and economy, this fourth volume of the DETAIL engineering series presents the theoretical background of SOM’s structural group. On the basis of a variety of projects with their general structural concept or their specific details, the book explains the process of finding corresponding solutions. These solutions illustrate the company’s core values: simplicity, clarity, hierarchy, efficiency and continuous reseach.
In addition, the projects – from James Turrel Skyspace to Burj Khalifa – are also placed in the context of SOM’s work as a whole using anecdotes from a number of other well-known SOM projects as John Hancock or Sears Tower. This volume considers how to find new structural solutions, as well as how materials can be used innovatively to create “next generation” buildings. Basics Steel Construction
The basic rules of construction with masonry, timber, steel, concrete and glass
English
Each type of construction has its special characteristics which cannot be compared with those of other building materials. The first building construction designs in the architectural curriculum are planned as masonry or timber buildings. On the basis of these two traditional and elementary building materials, students familiarize themselves with construction details and structural principles, which are also the basis of construction with “modern” materials such as steel, concrete and glass. Basics Building Construction is clearly structured and focused, and explains the characteristics of these important construction materials. The book familiarizes the reader with the most common construction systems, their rules and applications, and enables architectural students to contemplate creative solutions that may also be outside the standardized solutions offered by the construction industry.
This compendium combines the successful individual volumes Timber Construction, Masonry Construction and Glass Construction of the BASICS series in one book, which has been expanded by the two new, hitherto unpublished, Steel Construction and Concrete Construction volumes. Bert Bielefeld, Professor at the University of Siegen, managing partner of bielefeld&partner in Dortmund.

In 2008, the Department of Art and Architecture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts developed a new basis for the curriculum. They created five research platforms: Analogue and Digital Production (ADP), Ecology Sustainability Conservation (ESC), History Theory Criticism (HTC), Geography Landscape Cities (GLC) and Construction Material Technology (CMT). The CMT platform is lead by Michelle Howard; she used the platform to establish the Research Observe Make (ROM) teaching program. The ROM publication documents this program and also forms the basis for future development. It comprises, assembled in one volume, five complementary books, which can also be read individually. After an introduction and an exposé on theory, the “elements”, “space” and “material” projects are introduced. The last book documents workshops, lectures and experiments. An inspiring compendium with numerous expert contributions and creative student projects.

Getting Things Done 03 deals with the development of the building culture in Vorarlberg between 1950 and 2000 by focusing on key issues, and by means of witness accounts as well as by references to events relevant to the cultural history of the region. The essays and interviews highlight relationships and developments that create interest in social interactions and the evolution of ideas. Beyond the idea of an implicit metaphor of “widely spread family histories”, the heterogeneous nature of Vorarlberg architecture is profiled. The latter is described on the basis of the generations of designers, planners and actors, of the differences and continuity of motives and of the constantly changing construction methods and work environments. Another important issue is the “perfected” subversion: as a result of the usually strong objections experienced in practical application and the opposing forces, which have been painstakingly and thoroughly profiled, it has time and again proved itself as a reliable factor. Wolfgang Fiel, born 1973, studied architecture in Vienna and London. He teaches and has edited numerous books.

Design and architecture in Vienna around 1900
English / German
The catalogue for the exhibition at the MAK (Austrian Museum for Applied Arts/ Contemporary Art in Vienna) focuses on two fundamental approaches of the Moderne movement in an antithetic comparison, including the preceding history and aftereffects to this day: Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) and Adolf Loos (1870–1933) represent opposing reactions to the basic problems of modern civilization, which were triggered by the process of industrialization and democratization. Two different concepts for a modern way of life were created: Hoffmann promoted a comprehensive aestheticization of all spheres of life, while Loos interpreted architecture and design as the functional background for the development of individual personalities.
In 16 essays, well-known European and American experts investigate a wide range of contributing conditions and the highlights and consequences of these two traditions of the Moderne movement, from the 19th century to the present. The key works of Hoffmann and Loos – as well as those of their predecessors such as Otto Wagner, and successors such as Josef Frank – are richly illustrated. Symbolizing Existence deals with the current rapidly happening “deterritorialization” of everything which was once regarded stable and binding. What we today regard as statistically encoded information is capable to explicate and index the entire realm of what can be expressed and represented through a cascade of geometrical, functional, or finally logified schemes. We are currently experiencing a rapid loss of “grounding” of that which we once considered binding in our cultural and intellectual history. How can we obtain an articualte, cultivate way of thinking about “instances” that does not fall back into a schematic model Platonism (thereby falling behind Plato), and that does not remain enmeshed in an Aristotelian realization dynamics with a naturalism organized by original genus, kinds, and specific marks of distinction? The central phenomenon considered was the technological process of doping material: At the quantum level, a particle or its representation, the point, is no longer “that which has no parts” (Euclid).

In the first half of the twentieth century, urban design under the influence of European dictatorships not only served to support the rulers in their own country, but also to gain the recognition of the democratic states. After the National Socialist regime came to power in Germany, urban design increasingly became the trump card in the competition amongst the large dictatorships in Europe – almost as in the time of absolutism. Irrespective of all conflicts and political orientations, there was an intense exchange of ideas amongst the states in Europe. It is therefore not adequate to make an assessment just from the point of view of the dictatorships. The overarching view helps to understand the special characteristics of each dictatorship, and also disproves some simplified interpretations of their respective approaches to urban design. That is not just of historic interest; the discussion of the issue of dictatorships, is always also an expression of our social condition, our commemorative culture, our ability to recognize old and new forms of dictatorship – even today! The book discusses the state of research into urban design under five dictatorships during the first half of the twentieth century, and presents new research results based on examples.

Urban space is a commons: simultaneously a sphere of human cooperation and negotiation and its product. Understanding urban space as a commons means that the much sought-after productivity of the city precedes rather than results from strategies of the state and capital. This approach challenges assumptions of urbanization as capital-driven, an idea which resonates with a range of recent urban social movements, from the Arab Spring and the Occupy movement to the “Right to the City” alliance. However, commons exist in a tense relationship with state and market, both of which continually seek to exploit and control them. Initiatives to create “commons” are welcomed and even facilitated by governments in order to (re-)valorize urban space and lessen the impacts of economic restructuring, while, at the same time, the creative and reproductive potential of the urban commons is undermined by continuing attempts to commodify them. This volume examines these topics theoretically and empirically through a wide spectrum of international case studies providing perspectives from a variaty of cities as diverse as Berlin, Hyderabad and Seoul. A wider discussion of commons in current
scientific and activist literature from housing, public space, to urban infrastructure, is explored through the lens of the urban condition. Publication of the conference Urban Research Group at the Georg-SimmelCentre for Metropolitan Studies Important topic in urban research

Lützow 7 owe their reputation of long standing to the representative civic open spaces that they have designed for the German Chancellery, the Reichstag building and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, among many others. Yet their design approach of “representative tranquility”, as one of the book’s contributions is entitled, has produced about one thousand projects over the years – seven of which, more exactly 5 built + 2 under construction, from Germany, Belgium, Italy and Ireland, form one of the main parts in this landscape-architectural monograph. Other sections strive to grasp the essence of Lützow 7’s approach to landscape design in a panoramic portfolio and also in a directory to important design tasks and typical solutions in the realm between wilderness and detail. Tom Sieverts, the creator of the “inbetween city” paradigm, and Richard Weller of PennDesign, well acquainted with the partners Cornelia Müller and Jan Wehberg’s work, contribute their personal views.

New attractive landscapes on industrial wastelands
English
Coping with post-industrial brownfields is an issue throughout Europe and North America. A point of departure for their broad rediscovery in Germany was the refurbishment of an abandoned steelworks from 1990 on by Peter Latz which subsequently became Duisburg Nord Landscape Park. There, industrial relics were not demolished or converted but perceived as integral parts of the overall concept and then imbued with new meaning and use – a kind of excavation of the future. Many additional projects with a similar approach were created in the past decades, among them Parc del Clòt in Barcelona, Parque do Tejo e Trancão in Lisbon or Michel Desvigne’s Parc aux Angéliques in Bordeaux, currently under construction.
This book does not only describe a systematic framework for the use of post-industrial ruins it also contextualizes them in design history and analyzes their transformation in design theory. The author, professor for landscape design at Copenhagen University, covers a wide range of topics, linking 19th century Romanticism’s preoccupation with ruins to industrial decline (exemplified by Detroit) and then on to the subsequent Renaissance of the transformed landscape and its refound beauty. Ellen Braae is Professor at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University Copenhagen.

Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003) taught architectural theory at Kassel University and, in the 1980s, coined the term “Promenadology” or the science of Strollology and developed this into a complex and far-sighted planning and design discipline. Given that “the landscape” as an idea only exists in our heads, Burckhardt’s writings (and drawings) are not so much concerned with beautiful vistas, but focus instead on the multi-faceted interaction a simple walk-taker has with his environment. To those who observe the environment with their eyes wide open, interesting questions will arise again and again; for example, why “city” and “country” can no longer be separated so easily in the face of progressive urbanization. Or why we consider a viaduct to be beautiful, but a nuclear power station an intrusion. And also, why gardens are works of art and should therefore be appraised as such. This book contains 28 texts by the design and planning critic, for the first time in English, with the focus on landscapes, gardens as an art form and the science of Strollology.

At the beginning of the 1990s, European landscape architecture started to appear on the international radar with the Parc de la Villette in Paris and the squares in Barcelona. Today, it is an emancipated cultural discipline, and Austrian landscape architecture is on the advance in gardens, on squares and roads, in parks, housing estates and around institutional buildings. This book, for the first time, contains a comprehensive presentation of contemporary Austrian landscape architecture: nextland demonstrates how diverse the briefing, how complex the boundary conditions and how simple and exciting successful designs can be. The richly illustrated book profiles 188 open spaces of the last two decades in Austria, and accompanies these with a photographic essay. Well-known European landscape architects, art historians and specialist journalists provide the historic and international context and comment on the status of landscape architecture in Austria. Religious subject matter is not central in 20th century art. One might therefore suspect that, for the avant-garde, the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) would have eclipsed religion altogether. However, as Juan José Lahuerta argues in this book, the war caused a considerable revival of certain themes of religious art. In particular, it intensified Pablo Picasso’s lifelong preoccupation with the subject of the Crucifixion. The work of the Swiss surrealist painter Max von Moos (1903–1979) throws additional light on the paradox at hand. In 1938, i.e. one year after Picasso painted “Guernica”, von Moos published an essay entitled “Religious Painting of Our Time” that addresses some of the critical issues then confronted by church art: issues of communication and expression, realism and abstraction that turn out to offer surprising insights into Picasso's art – if not into modern art altogether.

Ernst Boerschmann was the most influential foreign architectural researcher in China in the first half of the twentieth century. This book concerns his three-year research expedition through the Chinese Empire (1906–1909). He was the first Westerner to systematically document China's religious architecture, returning from his travels with thousands of photographs, sketches, and architectural surveys. His six major publications leading up to 1931, described here alongside the reactions they caused, were milestones on the path to formal study of Chinese architectural history, long before Chinese academics themselves began to take interest in the subject in the 1930s. Eduard Kögel, Technische Universität, Berlin.

“Ahmet Oran follows in the tradition of monochrome painting influenced by the Art Informel style. ... The essence of his painting is characterized by a quiet assertiveness, positioning him somewhere between Mark Rothko, Gotthard Graubner and Hubert Scheibner” (Peter Baum). Oran first studied painting in Istanbul and came to Vienna in 1980, where he graduated with a diploma under Adolf Frohner. His big breakthrough came in 1995 when he was awarded 2nd prize in a competition. Oran’s work comes alive through the material texture of the finished surface. The reproductions, which demand exacting skills in lithography and printing, as well as sensitive graphic processing, have been carried out by Bohatsch and Partners, the well-known graphics studio. The book is not a comprehensive compilation of Ahmet Oran’s œuvre to date, but an initial presentation of works bundled into fragmented groups, beginning with the current work cycles. The book concludes with a chronological illustrated listing of the pieces reproduced in it.

The Austrian artist Astrid Esslinger presents a compilation of her work from 2003 to the present day with this volume. She has worked as a freelance artist since 1987. Until then she participated in artistic projects of the Linz artist collective Stadtwerkstatt. Her work can be divided into three parallel phases: her early pieces with textile materials and her later paintings with acrylic colors on canvas as well as pieces using an original technique developed for her work while on journeys, cut outs. The text contribution by Birgit Rinagl concentrates on Esslinger’s paintings which explore the themes of men and women, public and private, work and free time, nature and city as well as life and death. Tom Waibel discusses the subversive character of her hand luggage productions and brings light to their dark and ironic side. The introduction by Fina Esslinger, an art historian and the daughter of the artist, gives the reader the necessary background knowledge on motifs and the theoretical framework of the works, encouraging the reader to enjoy Esslinger’s artistic output. Fina Esslinger, art historian and exhibition producer, lives and works in Vienna and Berlin.

Karl Neubacher worked primarily as a graphic designer. His posters, based on artistic concepts, are legendary. With his blending of elements drawn from commercial art, on the one hand, and conceptual media art, on the other, he was able to generate creative fields of tension. His key means of expression were photography and film. Neubacher’s œuvre is to be understood within the context of media art, and it is for this reason that it remains relevant today. The central preoccupation of Neubacher’s art was his own body, which he directly employed in his performance art, whilst also instrumentalising it as an image in its own right in various media. The book is published as a catalog to the big show at the Kunsthaus Graz and is also the first comprehensive monograph on the Austrian universal artist Karl Neubacher.

Throughout history, and all over the world, viewers have treated works of art as if they were living beings: speaking to them, falling in love with them, kissing or beating them. Although over the past twenty years the catalogue of individual cases of such behavior towards art has increased immensely, there are few attempts at formulating a theoretical account of them, or writing the history of how such responses were considered, defined or understood. That is what this book sets out to do: to reconstruct some crucial chapters in the history of thought about such reflections in Western Europe, and to offer some building blocks towards a theoretical account of such responses, drawing on the work of Aby Warburg and Alfred Gell. Caroline van Eck, Leiden University, Netherlands.
First study to combine a history of Western thought about viewers’ treatments of statues as living beings Combines artistic, art historical, psychological, and anthropological aspects of the theme

The question of the (photographic) construction and representation of national identity is not limited to the ‘long 19th century’, but is a current issue in the post-colonial, post-global, digital world. The essays by international contributors aim at studying the relationship between photographic archives and the idea of nation, yet without focusing on single symbolic icons and instead considering the wider archival and sedimental dimension.

In a mental institution, a child ran along corridors and staircases, brushing past iron bars and balustrades. The building swallowed the sounds it made, just as it muffled the screams of the demented and the creaking of the ancient linoleum. Some places should be avoided by the child. Later, as a grown-up, she will be back in a clinic; this time as a patient, a cancer patient. She watches as the hearses pull up. “It is urgent that you leave the premises again”, says the porter. He will deal with the issue of bicycles later. Esther Dischereit’s story describes the world of mental institutions; following the Nazi years; to be feared. And also to be feared was probably the radio thief, who had to watch over the child in the mental home. Even though the child loved this child-man. Years later, the woman knows all about it.
