New building with wood

English

The “old” material of wood has been used to construct dwellings of different types since the dawn of mankind. And not without reason. Its low density combined with high rigidity, good processability, and its resistance makes it an excellent building material. There is currently a pioneering renaissance of the timber construction, for two distinct reasons: first, wood is increasingly being rediscovered as one of the most important renewable raw materials for sustainable construction. Moreover, a revolution in the construction of timber structures began several years ago with the ever-progressive use of three-dimensional CAD models for digitally controlled robot manufacturing The book documents these developments, in particular the engineering bonding techniques, the introduction of digital production techniques,

and the innovative material developments of this material. The chapter on composite structures and experimental structures specifically address trends toward the futureoriented dimensions of timber construction. In the final section, outstanding designs are documented in detail, such as the Club House of Haesley Nine Bridges Golf Course designed by Shigeru Ban in Yeoju, South Korea, and the double gymnasium in BorexCrassier, Switzerland, by Graeme Mann and Patricia Capua Mann. Simone Jeska and Khaled Saleh Pasha both worked at the Technical University in Berlin at the Chair of Prof. Rainer Hascher.

New sensuality of a classic material

English

Concrete’s multifaceted nature has made it very popular today with planners and builders. Besides the enormous potential inherent in its load-bearing capacity, the material offers a diversity of properties and surface characteristics. This publication focuses not just on the design and construction of concrete load-bearing structures, but also especially on concrete’s material characteristics and thus on the haptic and sensual side of this material. The Modern Concrete Construction Manual provides planners with expert information on concrete as a construction material, ranging from manufacturing to material characteristics, to the design of concrete load-bearing structures, including details on current digital design and production process options. Designed as a standard reference work, the publication offers com-

prehensive and detailed insights into a range of topics, including cost-effectiveness, energy and sustainability, renovation, design and interior design. An extensive index of successful projects, with a selection of real-life examples, provides inspiration, while inviting readers to make modern use of this classic construction material. Designing for energy efficiency

English

In the course of the last two decades, the Passive House Standard has evolved into a key benchmark for energy-efficient construction. Passive houses are being erected in almost all parts of the world and for all types of users. At the same time, many architects are unsure about the specifics: What do passive houses really deliver, and what errors need to be avoided during planning? This book provides architects with the confidence required to deal with the passive house standard. It shows where there is significant scope for design and explains design strategies that lead to better passive houses. A selection of international buildings illustrate how design, construction and building

technology combine in passive houses. Chapters on building physics, building services engineering and energy balancing round out the planning guidelines. Dr.-Ing. Roberto Gonzalo and Dr. -Ing. Rainer Vallentin, Munich, Germany

With its positive qualities and wide range of applications, wood excels in several areas: It meets the holistic evaluation criteria of sustainable construction and is perfect for outdoor use in sophisticated designs and facades, as well as for use in interiors. It enables short construction times, is relatively inexpensive and both builders and architects alike appreciate its sensuous charm and familiarity. Even today’s high standards for acoustic insulation and fire safety in multi-storey buildings can be met by wood. These outstanding qualities are increasingly turning this traditional construction material into one of the most sought-after materials for innovative projects of the future, while its structural design potential, combined with a “pure” solution, allows the building of mixed and composite structures. Best of DETAIL Wood brings together highlights from DETAIL about wood as a material. Besides a theoretical basis, the publication also offers a comprehensive section on projects, ranging from experiments to elaborate details, which provides abundant inspiration and examples of successful architectural design using wood.

For thousands of years people have aligned their homes with the sun. This tendency decreased with the availability of artificial light. Yet, due to the health effects of artificial light as well as rising energy costs, the issue of designing with daylight is of great importance again today. The primary objective of daylight systems is to make maximum use of daylight for certain building types and climates. The book documents the various dimensions of the optimum use of daylight with particular reference to window orientation, light distribution, and prism technology, and discusses the health and economic related aspects. In the final chapter, existing design concepts are documented in detail, including the expansion of the Art Institute of Chicago Museum in the United States, the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and Terminal 3 of the Changi Airport in Singapore, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

Façades determine the appearance of a building. Hence, they constitute a major element in architecture. At the same time, the building’s envelope has important functions to fulfil, such as lighting, weatherproofing, thermal insulation, load transfer and sound insulation. Over the past 15 years, façades have become increasingly complex – ’intelligent’ facades, for instance, adapt to changing climate and lighting conditions. Newly developed materials and technologies have broadened the scope of façade functions. This book demonstrates the principles of façade construction. It systematically describes the most common types, such as post-and-beam façade, curtain wall, corridor façade or double façade, and provides guidelines for appropriate detailing. Numerous drawings made especially for the book explain the principles of different types of facades, which are then illustrated with built examples. For this second edition, all chapters were revised and all four examples in the case studies chapter were replaced by new material. The new chapter “Future Façades” offers insights into what’s next. What is the best way to consider energy in buildings? For over a century, the building industry has largely focused on ideas of insulation and isolation for its energetic practices. A growing movement of designers claim that other concepts and practices are required for the non-isolated energy systems of architecture. This book describes the history, theory and facts of the mainstream isolation technologies and the emerging alternative design approaches. It is a book on the scientific, material, and design history of building isolation; but more importantly, it is a book on isolated and non-isolated perspectives on energy in architecture. Written by a registered practicing architect with detailed technical knowledge, who is at the same time a researcher and experienced teacher, the aim is to understand the different scientific, architectural and cultural approaches to energy and to promote a non-isolated perspective: a thermodynamically accurate, ecologically powerful, culturally relevant, and architecturally ambitious perspective on energy in architecture.

Unique places throughout the Alps

English / German

Fascinated by the Alps, the authors spend most of their free time in the mountains. Always searching for new and special places, ranging from stop-offs, to final destinations for a peaceful stay, they have now compiled a wide variety of different kinds of accommodation. Buildings in the book range from houses that have been owned by one family for generations and shaped by its various characters, through chalets renovated to the most modern standards, and to solitary huts. The authors have chosen projects built using materials and sustainable construction methods in keeping with the Alpine environment that also represent successful spatial and atmospheric concepts. But this book is not only

about architecture; the authors also tell stories of the houses’ owners and the buildings’ development and management over the years, as well as tales of Alpine life and people. Background information on construction and tips on travelling in the Alps, general maps, and a list of addresses make this book an outstanding travel guide for readers interested in architecture and for anyone who loves the Alps.

The parliament of parliaments: the catalog of the Austrian contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale sometimes less successful monumentality of the buildings is lost in the book’s alphabetically organized, analytical representation. This in fact emphasizes the many formal similarities of the buildings, which represent very different political regimes.

The idea of a democratic legitimation of power is now so widespread that no nation can do without it, or at least to construct in name a place for the representative assembly of the people. The catalog of the Austrian contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale documents every national parliament in the world by means of axonometric representations, supplemented by site plans, a short description, and other relevant data. In the diversification and comparison of the different solutions, it becomes clear what messages the parliament buildings wish to convey via architecture: national identity, eternal life, conformity with the historical principles, or even the furious representation of a new beginning. The sometimes more,

Comprehensive guide to the designing and planning of libraries

English

Libraries as a building type have been subjected to substantial changes in particular in the past ten years. Milestones such as Rem Koolhaas’ Seattle Central Library from 2004 reinvented the typology completely and reflected a development from elitist temple of learning to a public living room. Hybrids between library and department store or theater were conceived. Today, the ubiquity of electronic devices and media needs to be taken into account by the designer: every new library has areas without any books now. This work of reference explains systematically all technological and planning requirements of library design. Special features such as RFID, signage, acoustics or specific structural load issues are explained in texts by experts from the fields of architecture and library science.

Finally, approximately 40 best-practice case studies of contemporary library design are documented extensively. They are organized in four categories – national libraries, large public libraries, small public libraries, university libraries – and comprise high-profile examples such as Jo Coenen’s Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam, Alvaro Siza’s Public Library Viana do Castelo in Portugal or Mecanoo’s Library of Birmingham from 2013. Diversity and density in housing today

English

Accomodation of diversity and the creation of urban density are a focus of world-wide building and planning activities today. This book combines the architectural and urban scales to demonstrate that it is a specific quality, urban intensity, which determines the success of housing. The authors provide a typology of housing according to the ways in which diversity and density are created. Comparisons with historical models and critical appraisals based on the authors’ unique standing give ample information on the pros and cons of major types of housing, their pitfalls and successful examples. Newly created sets of drawings, from floor plans to spectacular 3D aerial views of the buildings in their urban contexts, accompany each of the more than twenty case studies that are described and analyzed in detail.

The approach taken here relates to many pressing issues in contemporary housing, including the avoidance of urban sprawl, the revival of city centers and the ongoing search for innovative housing types. He lives on the spatial ambivalence between opening and closing and at the same time creates the expectation of what is to come.Till Boettger has dealt in teaching and research projects closely with the architectural staging of arrival and reception. His book is a collection of exemplary phenomenological analyzes of spatial transitions in historical and modern cultural buildings by renowned architects. It also develops a methodology to optimize threshold rooms in all construction projects. In addition to a balance that can generate an exciting space, there is also primarily the temporal sequence of experiencing determining. Threshold spaces are shown here in their role as a spatial agent: they receive and bid farewell.

Von Werz founded his architecture office in Munich in 1946. He was later joined by Christoph Ottow, who became partner in 1952. Erhard Bachmann and Michel Marx joined the firm as partners in 1971. Aside from his work as an architect, Werz was also a member of the German Academy of Urban Construction and Planning and served on the committee of the office for the Preservation of Historical Buildings and Monuments. Some of the buildings his office completed were the object of controversies in their time due to their modernity and use of new materials. This was the case with the new building for the state archaeological collection in Munich, which was one of the first ferroconcrete buildings built with self-oxidizing corten steel plates. The spirit of post-war architecture is visible in his work, which was defined by moderation and preservation, while remaining receptive to the influence of the avant-garde. This publication documents around 26 projects in the words of Cordula Rau and with both images from the period and new photos as well as plans that were re-drafted for this volume.

In just four years a modern campus has come into being for the Vienna University of Economics and Business. The master plan by BUSarchitektur provides an urban “oasis with pavilions in the garden”. The buildings by Zaha Hadid, BUSarchitektur, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, CRABstudio (Peter Cook), Estudio Carme Pinos and NO.MAD Arquitectos interact like an orchestra, harmonized and dynamized by a “walk along park” which lends the campus a lounge character. Alvar Aalto, born 1898 in Kuortane in Finland, is one of the last of the works personalities of the twentieth century architecture generation. His buildings, from urban planning to simple residential buildings, function as a single organism. He was never interested in formal architectural theories. The path of each building is fascinating, from the first fleeting sketches to the completed work handed over to the client, and strongly defined by the personality of the architect. Everything remains alive and in motion, seems casual and natural as if it grew naturally out of the surroundings. The unique sense for the importance of individual components and construction phases makes it possible to identify a complex of individual style, even in modest construction tasks. Hence, Aalto’s designs and experiments result in furniture, lamps, curtains, and many other things that make a house habitable. The central theme of his work is the unity of idea, form, and way of life.

The complete works of Alvar Aalto with buildings and projects from the years 1922 –1976 The three volumes make tangible the simplicity and incomprehensibility of Aalto’s architecture

This essential and comprehensive Mies monograph focuses in its analysis on Mies’ design intentions: it reconstructs the buildings in their original state, examines them from the present day perspective and rediscovers the inspiring architecture of a great modern master. The book presents eighty of Mies’ built works in chronological order. Approximately thirty of these works are analyzed in detail in three parts. In the first part, the construction is documented in its built state; for this, all of the ground plans were redrawn by the author. The second part outlines the changes to the bulidings and the third part develops the results of this investigation with regard to their relevance to the contemporary view of Mies’ work. Carsten Krohn studied architecture, art history and urban planning in Hamburg and at Columbia University, New York. 2004 he published his Ph. D. Thesis on the reception of Buckminster Fuller among architects. He is the author of numerous other publications.

The exhibition at the vai is the first to offer insights into the development process of the traveling exhibition on architecture in Vorarlberg, which shall first be opened to the public in September 2014 at the Werkraum Bregenzerwald before visiting Austrian cultural venues all over the world. The name of the exhibition is a reflection of a stance and modus operandi that is directly derived from architectural practice. As a result, the exhibition at the vai showcases these practices, starting with the conception of projects and examples thereof. The exhibition also offers a broad series of interviews with major figures in the development of construction culture in Vorarlberg and includes exhibition architecture prototypes that put the many content levels and scenographic aspects of the format on display. The first edition contains the guiding principles, the isometrics of exhibition architecture as well as interviews with Renate Breuß, Christian Schützinger, Verena Konrad and Robert Fabach.

The “Getting Things Done” exhibition will be on display at the Werkraum Bregenzerwald from 13 September to 11 October. The exhibition is conceived as a traveling showcase and will later be shown at Austrian cultural venues worldwide. The publication documents the exhibition in its final form and consists of three main components: exhibition architecture, the scenographic and logistic aspects of its presentation, selected handcrafted objects from the Werkraum Bregenzerwald and – as the centerpiece – the presentation of the selected projects, which were chosen on the basis of a set of themes. These projects are described with statements by the curators and a factsheet. Statements by cooperating project partners, essays by Otto Kapfinger and Edelbert Kob as well as a photo spread on the Modernist precursors of what is known as the Vorarlberg School from 1920 to 1970 complete the catalogue. The second volume in the series of publications was once again designed by Clemens Schedler and is a seamless visual extension of the first volume. Photographic exploration of the city

English / German

Living cities change continuously. Many small interventions change the appearance of the city, day in, day out. Reinhard Mandl transforms such fleeting moments in Viennese urban life into lasting photographic memories. The photographer explores the city alphabetically by street name in easily followed routes, literally from A to Z. What surprises are there from Abbégasse to Baaderwiesenweg and why are “No Photographs Allowed” right at the beginning? Are there really new perspectives of the familiar to be discovered when walking from the hubbub of Calafattiplatz to Dachauer-Straße, and how did he ultimately make it from Ybbsstraße to Zachgasse? The exhibition invites readers to join Reinhard Mandl on a seven-year exploration of Viennese city life.

New approaches to social design

English

Social Design is a term with a wide range of meanings: from Whole System Design, Regenerative Design, Sustainable Design and Service Design to Green Urbanism and Urban Metabolism. All of these design concepts are driven by the desire to reduce the human impact on our planet. Above all, these concepts share the motivation for taking responsibility, as well as taking position. Social Design: Public Action enlarges this definition by introducing a series of practices, tactics and speculations presented by international experts in the field. The book reviews the contributions to the Social Design: Public Action international symposium

held at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2013, questioning the transformational power of new forms of the social, political and cultural within the urban realm. It aims at connecting artistic research and scientific knowledge with hands-on spatial production, interweaving the discourse into the very fabric of society. In times where the very concept of ’nature’ is questioned not only in its philosophical dimension, but in the core of its biological materiality, we need to reconsider the interrelations between architecture and nature. This not only applies to strategies on environmental responsibility but equally on anticipatory human behavior and cultural or demographic variety. To address these challenges this book proposes to embrace the unknown and cultivate the architectural discipline towards an integrated and crossdisciplinary practice. It unravels compelling innovative and forward-thinking design narratives by leading international practitioners and researchers who investigate novel associations between architecture, nature and humanity for a future, alive architecture. Structured around the three closely crosslinked core themes “bioinspiration”, “materiability”, and “intelligence” the book engages with the starting point of an emerging new design field, where the symbiosis of physics, biology, computing and design promises the redefinition of what we call architecture today.

Architecture is becoming more global and exchangeable ? removed from any locationbased identity. Reflecting facades appear to be emblematic for a value system that centers on economic priorities. The form and surface aim to achieve an immediate effect that eliminates discourse. Branding is the objective, making building shells business propositions. SHAPE shows that global design does not depend on scale or location and the collages in the book offer the reader vistas of the zenith this development has currently reached. Icons of consumer consumption are taken out of context and set in landscapes and cityscapes. This creates the impression of a seemingly natural architectural setting. A SENSAI flacon could just as well be a building in the Qatar skyline. Rem Koolhaas also showed how current this theme is at the Venice Biennale. “AbsorbingModernity” is his way of showing how national characteristics are being supplanted through the worldwide adoption of a single modern architectural language and repertoire of typologies. Big Data and urban planning

English

The MIT based SENSEable City Lab under Carlo Ratti is one of the research centers that deal with the flow of people and goods, but also of refuse that moves around the world. Experience with large-scale infrastructure projects suggest that more complex and above all flexible answers must be sought to questions of transportation or disposal. The published edition, edited by Dietmar Offenhuber and Carlo Ratti, shows how Big Data change reality and, hence, the way we deal with the city. It discusses the impact of real-time data on architecture and urban planning, using examples developed in the SENSEable City Lab. They demonstrate how the Lab interprets digital data as material that can be used for the formulation of a

different urban future. It also looks at the negative aspects of the city-related data acquisition and control. The authors address issues with which urban planning disciplines will work intensively in the future: questions that not only radically and critically review, but also change fundamentally, the existing tasks and how the professions view their own roles. Reference work and design tool for the design of public spaces

English

The question of composition and spatial qualities arises in every urban design concept or intervention in the spatial structure of urban public squares. How are the essential elements involved: dimension, proportion, alignment, cohesion, accesses, shaping of focus point and of edges like surfaces and materials? How do they contribute to a character of urban space with which residents can identify? Comparing historical examples with current designs aids one in visualizing spatial effect. Similar to a floor plan atlas for buildings, Squares allows the user to evaluate spatial conditions for movement and rest based on comparable existing urban squares. The book offers the planner a comparative example for most conditions (shape, size, location, topography, and so on).

Seventy European urban squares are presented and explained with the most important characteristics in a consistent manner in as-built plan, ground plan, section, and axonometric projection. Sophie Wolfrum is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Munich.

A unique planning tool for landscape architects

English, Softcover

Englsih, Hardcover

When developing a design concept in a realizable plan, landscape architects oscillate between two different levels of criteria: the tangible design task in context with the planning typology of the park, playground, outdoor swimming pool, or sports facilities, and the individual elements such as steps, ramps, pathways, fenced-in enclosures, outdoor furniture, and so on. Planning Landscape is a well-conceived tool for the planner, which focuses on the two main aspects of “elements” and “typologies”. The planner can flexibly shift between these two according to the specific criterion. The publication presents all information relevant to the planning in a detailed, clear, and cohesive manner.

These two main chapters are flanked by an introductory chapter explaining the basics and determining factors of designing in open spaces at the front of the book, and the “reference work” at the end of the book where general dimensions and units, specifications and norms are all clearly compiled. Astrid Zimmermann is a landscape architect with a practice office in Berlin, since 2003 various lectureships, e. g. at the TU Berlin

Design interventions for the reuse of existing structures must face the question of the past and the extent to which it should be included in the design for the future. This is the point of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on current issues in international adaptive reuse. The 21st century has witnessed a climate of crisis, most often immediate and unpredictable but, at times, foreseen, impending and even expected. Such events and the ability for continuity, recovery and change, require strength borne from adaptability. This volume explores the idea of resilience, from anticipatory strategies to shock absorption, from the reduction of material needs to the widening of the array of resources, from the liberation of traditional constraints to new forms of collaborations, from built-in redundancies to risk mitigation. The examples range from places of resilience in post-industrial cities and in the suburbs of Paris to the rebuilding of post-war Beirut and different resilient approaches to Italy’s and Japan’s earthquake experience. Linking the theoretical concept of resilience to the planning practice of adaptive reuse, the volume demonstrates the interdisciplinary usefulness of this concept in the design disciplines.

Current trends in design research The new volume Design Research Now 2 presents current positions in design research as well as groundbreaking research projects, with an emphasis on today’s many different approaches to design research. The editors based their selection particularly on the relevance of design research in the context of current debates on social aspects, knowledge, innovation, and technology. The publication brings together innovative approaches in the areas of speculative design, critical design, design interactions, participatory design, sustainable design, and open design. The significance of these directions for design and design research is presented via exemplary research projects and analyzed in programmatic essays. The introduction critically examines the substance of these research concepts for the transformation of design practice and design education and discusses the perspective of design as an integrative discipline.

Meta-modernism stems from convolution in molecular biology From Louis Pasteur to a skin laboratory in Sydney

Petra Maitz studied arts in Hamburg, doctorate in Vienna. Illustrator and concept artist. Preferred subject: molecular biology.

English / German

Post-genomics and molecular biology provided the basis for a collection of drawings and installations from 20 years of artistic practice and artistic perspective on an increasingly media-driven world of communication in which subtleties are gradually disappearing from an individual language. The generalised theory of evolution and extended synthesis in theoretical biology have both inspired the work of artist and scientist Petra Maitz until the present day. From these, Maitz has formed a comprehensive hypothesis of the chemical world change, showing visualisations of evolution in a cultural and scientific context in her drawings. She presents medical and biological scientists and their research seen through the eyes of an artist.

This publication presents, for the first time, the artistic life-work of Roswitha Ennemoser (1953 – 2008) to the public. Her oeuvre is in the tradition of constructive-concrete art and from early on it was distinguished by a reduced language of forms. Not only the serial and mainly multi-part objects (wall hung and free-standing) but also her writings come from in-depth analysis of perception. The continuous questioning of form, space and colour creates a multi-layered interplay in the physical form of the objects. Roswitha Ennemoser’s art is thus a symbiosis between intellectual thought and aesthetic form creation. Sonja Gruber, Maris Liska, Berhold Ecker, MUSAMuseum Start Gallery Artothek, Vienna, Austria

2014 centenary: artistic positions

English / German / Czech / Bosnian

There are many events to be commemorated in in Europe in 2014: The outbreak of World War I, the death of the first Nobel Prize winner Bertha von Suttner, the outbreak of World War II 75 years ago and the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago. The generations of witnesses, of victims and perpetrators who can (or could) still report on what was perhaps the time of the greatest loss of human dignity, the period of both World Wars, will not be among us for very much longer. The majority of the European population considers the idea of a war that could affect their continent as a whole an implausible concept. But – is that really the case? Which indicators of the loss of human dignity do we encounter in our daily lives? What strategies are available to defend and protect this basic human precept from instrumentalization and

commercialization? The blurring and destruction of the conditions that are considered constitutive for the concept of “dignity” in relation to human life forms provides for the different approaches to artistic considerations B. Ecker, R. Fink: MUSA Museum Start Gallery Artothek, Vienna, Austria

How do contemporary artists define “dignity”, how can it be rendered and how does it react to today’s loss of values? Interesting, in part unknown artistic positions, many from the Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegowina.

At the zone of intersection between imagery, law, and the economy, the defamatory image is charged with a particularly explosive significance. While a “pedagogy of shame” was used in the Late Middle Ages in order to punish debtors and other violators of contracts, the defamatory image remains to this day a vehicle for the moral denunciation and pejorative depiction of individuals who have violated the law. The contributions in this volume discuss the “magical force” exerted by defamatory imagery as well as the role of public humiliation in legal practice, including the “pittura infamante” and the general use of imagery in law. History of a forged book

English

Galileo’s O, Volume III, is perhaps without peer in the history of the book. In this work, historians in various fields revise the results they presented in the first two volumes, which focused on the New York copy of Sidereus Nuncius, written in 1610. The analysis of this book was conceived as a uniquely multidisciplinary and cooperative undertaking, and many of its findings remain valid. Yet the subject of analysis proved to be the work of an international group of forgers. Volume III describes the chronology and methods by which the discovery of forgery was made – a veritable watershed moment in the

continuing struggle between the ever-more refined methods of forgers and new methods used to apprehend them. Ultimately, the work also provides insight into the psychology of specialists who “research themselves” in order to prevent similar errors in the future. In 1920, Erwin Panofsky, one of the most influential art historians of the 20th century, submitted his habilitation thesis on Michelangelo. In following years, Panofsky developed the manuscript further, yet never published it. Following his emigration to the US in the early 1930s, it was considered lost, but was later rediscovered in Munich, and subsequently edited by Panofsky’s widow. This edition includes a facsimile of the original manuscript. Erwin Panofsky, art historian in Hamburg and Princeton Gerda Panofsky, art historian in Princeton

The international creation of typefaces after 1950 was decisively influenced by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. His Univers typeface and the machinereadable font OCR-B, which was adopted as an ISO standard, are milestones, as is his type for the Paris airports, which set new standards for signage types and evolved into the Frutiger typeface. With his corporate types, he helped to define the public profiles of companies such as the Japanese Shiseido line of cosmetics. In all he created some fifty types, including Ondine, Méridien, Avenir, and Vectora. Based on conversations with Frutiger himself and on extensive research in France, England, Germany, and Switzerland, this publication provides a highly detailed and accurate account of the type designer’s artistic development.

All of his types – from the design phase to the marketing stage – are illustrated and analyzed with reference to the technology and related types. Hitherto unpublished types that were never realized and more than one hundred logos complete the picture. This second, revised and expanded study edition, which now has an index, makes Frutiger’s achievements even more accessible.

Adrian Frutiger – Typefaces. The Complete Works The creation of type in the latter half of the 20th century was considerably influenced by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. His typefaces are amongst the most successful of contemporary classics. Adrian Frutiger first came to the design world’s attention in the late 1950s with his design of Univers and the numbering concept behind it. A considerable proportion of his output has also been informed by developments in typesetting technology. In the 1970s he set a standard for signage typefaces with his Alphabet Roissy for the Paris-Roissy airport. Slightly reworked, this went on to enjoy great success as a body typeface under the name Frutiger. His machinereadable OCR-B, which is used on paying-in slips, passports, credit cards and as ISBN numbers on books, has become an official ISO standard. His sans serif typefaces Avenir and Vectora, which appeared at the end of the 1980s, stand out because of their exceptional readability, and have cemented Frutiger’s reputation as ‘Mr. Sans Serif’. Display typefaces such as Ondine and serif typefaces such as Méridien and Linotype Centennial have also enjoyed great success. His involvement with Indian typographic culture still continues to make itself felt on the subcontinent, and his corporate typefaces shaped the visual business culture at British Petroleum and Electricité de France / Gaz de France, amongst others, and continue to do so today at the Japanese cosmetics firm Shiseido. However, some of his designs were never realised until many years later. For instance, over half a century passed between the design of Nami and its publication in 2007. Altogether Adrian Frutiger has designed over 50 typefaces, and in collaboration with colleagues has produced hundreds of logos and wordmarks. Born on 24 May 1928 near Interlaken in Switzerland, Adrian Frutiger was apprenticed as a typesetter and subsequently studied type and typography for two years at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich. His teachers Alfred Willimann and Walter Käch – as well as Emil Ruder, the celebrated Basel-based typography teacher – had a lasting impression on him. Shortly after he graduated he was himself teaching at various schools in Paris. In addition he has for many years been engaged as a type consultant at both IBM and Linotype. His knowledge of type, signs and symbols has been communicated through numerous lectures, specialist articles and textbooks. His work as a type designer has been acknowledged with many awards and honours, including the Gutenberg Prize from the International Gutenberg Society in Mainz and the title of Officier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government. Adrian Frutiger – Typefaces. The Complete Works is based on interviews and conversations with the designer and on comprehensive research by the editors. Its depth and range make it an indispensable reference work. Completed in the year of Adrian Frutiger’s 80th birthday, it represents, as is his wish, his legacy to further generations of type designers and typographers.
