Building design: from residential buildings to airports
English, Hardcover
English, Softcover
In formulating a design concept into a viable plan, architects oscillate constantly between two planes of observation: the actual design task in the context of planning typologies such as residential buildings, office buildings, museum, or airport, and the individual room, meaning the kitchen, office, classroom, sanitary rooms, storage rooms, and so on. Planning Architecture offers architects and students a well thought-out planning tool, in which two main sections reciprocally complement one another: the “spaces” and the “typologies” between which the planner can flexibly oscillate depending on his or her plane of observation. All relevant planning information is presented in a detailed clear fashion, and in context.
These two sections are flanked by an introductory chapter explaining the basis and framework for typological design, as well as a “reference section” at the end of the book that clearly lists general dimensions and units, regulations and standards.
Bert Bielefeld, Professor at the University of Siegen, managing partner of bielefeld & partner in Dortmund, Germany.

An indispensable handbook for architectural design
English, Hardcover
English, Softcover
An ideal design is site-specific, which is the only way architecture can create or connect with a specific sense of identity. This requires addressing the structural and local circumstances. The method handbook, developed at the Department of Dietmar Eberle, offers a playful way in which to systematically ascertain a complex framework and use it for your own design. The 9×9 method takes all relevant factors and their alternate interaction into consideration: location, structure, shell, program, and materiality, all which, in a matrix with various intersections, produce exactly 9 “fields of action” for the design. The individual “fields” are not only illustrated visually awith meaningful and impressive pictures, but are also discussed in texts by leading specialists. For this book, the 9×9 method was completely re-worked and redesigned.

Over the last 30 years, interest has grown in using clay as an environmentally friendly building material that has proved its ideal sustainability for centuries. Light earth constructions, where a wooden framework or timber-framed walls are infilled with clay and fiber material, have extraordinarily solid, structural characteristics. Earth constructions are no longer considered exotic today, which, in part, is due to this standard work. The publication presents the use of this “old” building material comprehensively and modernly, and contains many practical tips about simplifying designs as well as using prefabricated clay materials in the contemporary construction process. The selected project examples show the diversity of this building material, and the self-build projects demonstrate the beauty of working with lightweight earth using your own hands. The book is aimed at builders, architects and engineers, producers and artisans, as well as self-builders.

This reference book explains the current state of research on contemporary methods and procedures for dealing with historic timber structures. It summarizes the results of a buildings researchers’ conference in late 2014 in Prague, which was dedicated to the three main aspects essential to dealing with historic timber structures: construction, architecture history, and repair and maintenance. Fourteen researchers examined centuriesold timber structures that included churches, farms, half-timbered houses, and log cabins in Europe and Russia. Based on the conclusions from these studies, they developed historically appropriate measures to repair and maintain wooden structures. Historical and contemporary photographs as well as new drawings document the studied buildings. Prof. Dr. Siri Skjold Lexau, Bergen University, Norway Ass. Timber engineering at a glance
English
Timber: the old raw material and building material returns. There are many reasons today for building with wood and there are great advantages over conventional designs. Wood is not only a renewable building material that helps reduce the levels of CO2 and is hence good for climate change, but, due to modern computing and manufacturing processes, it can also be used for a variety of construction tasks. Wood possesses excellent qualities for both construction and indoor climate control, and can easily be combined with other common building materials. Based on 24 international projects, the book provides an overview of the range of possibilities in wood construction today. Texts, images, and plans document the architectural and constructive qualities of contemporary timber structures from the conceptual design to the structure in detail.
The various uses are based on current research in modern timber engineering but also on timber construction expertise that has been developing over many centuries. This special discipline has evolved significantly in recent decades, particularly in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and is a world leader today. Marc Wilhelm Lennartz and Susanne Jacob-Freitag are both specialist journalists for architecture and timber engineering.

The facade serves as the building’s public face, allowing rapid assessment of its architecture. Best of DETAIL: Facades explores this topic with theoretical discussions and an in-depth look at a range of selected projects, which, besides showcasing suitable materials and designs, give the reader a detailed look behind the scenes. It turns out that quality architecture can only result from a coherency between the facade, structure, internal organisation and building services – design elements that interact directly with each other. This presents the architect with enormous challenges, particularly as the unity between the exterior and interior is no longer a given, as today’s range of materials and design possibilities offer nearly limitless creativity. The book gathers highlights on this issue from various DETAIL publications, offering abundant inspiration and constructive solutions for the reader’s own work.

For architects, the amount of work to be done on existing buildings is steadily increasing. This is partially a reflection of the advancing age of buildings, but it is also due to constant changes in building and social requirements. The desired or necessary measures, however, are always personalised and vary considerably. As a result, there is no standardised or widely understood term that can be used to describe the range of construction activities related to existing buildings. Reflecting this, best of DETAIL: Refurbishment presents a comprehensive range of highlights from DETAIL on the topics of renovation, extension, restoration, refurbishment and conversion. In addition to specialised theoretical contributions, the publication features an extensive section with examples of projects. From small-scale measures, such as the redecoration of single rooms or apartments, to the supersized category at the urban renewal level, it offers abundant inspiration as well as a variety of approaches to solving problems.

A fundamental guide to building with earth
English
For over 25 years, Martin Rauch has been at the forefront of research and development in all aspects of rammed earthed construction. As proper design with earth can only come from truly understanding the material, he would now like to share his experience and knowledge of this construction material in a design manual. The publication goes beyond projects to focus on structural elements, such as the design and layout of floors, walls, ceilings and openings, which are clearly explained with detailed project information from structures previously realised by Martin Rauch. Various examples help to illustrate how to overcome structural engineering difficulties in earth construction and the design possibilities that result from these solutions.

New strategies for living
English/ German
Housing construction is one of the most fundamental tasks of architecture and urbanism. Many cities have a strong increase in demand from families with children or for mixed and integrated living. Projects designed for owner-occupation often offer ideal solutions, because owner occupants who are both investors and decision-makers set new standards for quality as well as cost savings. At the same time, this phenomenon is also increasing on an international level. Several private developers plan residential property for their own use and join forces in a housing cooperative or assembly. The book knowledgeably addresses the many aspects of joint building and living: from the economic use of these forms of housing to issues of land allocation, social concerns,
and legal situations. Some 25 projects with different programs and dimensions provide ideal benchmarks or even blueprints for new developments. Annette Becker, Ph.D., is an art historian and curator at Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt/Main

Housing cooperatives for the future The site development “mehr als wohnen” (“more than living”) in Zurich North is a flagship project for sustainable housing cooperatives. Thirteen new buildings offer living and working space for more than 1,100 people and pave the way for future urban cohabitation. In addition to new typologies for family, retirement, and cluster apartments, this urban communal housing development also includes comprehensive services such as a guesthouse, a restaurant, and a mobility station. The planners are also experimenting with new materials and innovative energy concepts. An initiative of 30 Zurich housing cooperatives has been developing the project “mehr als wohnen” as a platform for innovation since 2007. At the core of the planning process is the dialogue between the different parties. The project is also facing the pressing task of building and living, according to energy and resource-efficient means that go beyond familiar energy labels.
The publication combines elements of a book on architecture with sociological analyses. The built projects are documented using a collection of plans that range from master plans to apartment layouts and selected details. In addition, the participating architects, planners, cooperative members, and experts discuss their experiences and provide insight into the background of the cooperatives and of planning processes. They demonstrate how this exemplary site development can be an integral part of the current urban development discourse and reality. They also discuss how urban planning is able to produce sustainable city development.

Urban architecture with green materials
English
The integration of nature in architecture is a key concern of sustainability. However, all too often sustainable design is reduced to improving the energetic performance of buildings and the ornamental application of natural green. Dense + Green explores new architectural typologies that emerge from the integration of green components such as sky terraces, vertical parks and green facades, in high-density buildings. The book describes green strategies in a comparison across different design tasks and climate conditions. In-depth case studies on the most relevant building types, consistently presented with analytical drawings made exclusively for this book, are complemented by expert essays that demonstrate the current paradigm shift in the sustainable urban environment.

Descombes Rampini’s projects are prime examples of the skillful, spatial combination of architecture and landscape architecture. In texts, drawings, models, and photographs, this monograph presents more than 45 completed projects and unbuilt designs from the last fifteen years. The publication covers all scales, ranging from spatial planning and urban planning to individual engineering structures. For the Place Simon Goulart project, completed in 2013, large wooden lounging fixtures were installed to create an atmospheric city square where visitors can relax and linger in the heart of Geneva. Turbinenplatz – the largest city square in Zurich – is a surprising design that plays with the contrast between minimalist design and a light show at night. In the ongoing renaturalizing of the Aire Canal in Geneva, which began in 2001, the architects have gradually created a natural landscape and recreational space on a four-kilometer long, strip of landscape. Outside of Switzerland, the architects are redesigning the banks of the Saône in Lyon, and are planning the new park, “Jardins d’Éole” in Paris. All of the projects demonstrate the design sensibility and the vast experience of Julien Descombes and Marco Rampini.

Available again, in a limited edition: the internationally successful standard work on the use of color Le Corbusier designed two color collections for the Salubra wallpaper company: the “Clavier de couleurs” of 1931, with 43 colors, ant the 1959 collection, with 20. Not content with the mere color selection, drawn from his experience as an architect and painter, he also organized the tones on 12 sample cards in such a manner that, by using a slider, three or five colors could be varyingly isolated or combined. Each card contained a different color scheme meant, when applied, to create a particular spatial effect. This would became not only a useful tool but also a kind of testament of the purist color theory, an essential groundwork and a valuable instrument for all those who deal with color in theory or practice.

YoVA was established in 2005 as an initiative to support young architects from the City of Vienna. In addition to a juried application process, participating architects must be under the age of 45, have a practice based in Vienna, and have realized at least one project there. While the focus of YoVA 1–3 was a series of exhibitions, the results of YoVA 4 will be published exclusively in this publication. For the first time, young Viennese landscape architects were also allowed to apply. In November 2014, eleven young Viennese architectural and landscape architectural practices were selected from applications submitted under the jury chaired by Bart Lootsma: Lukas Göbl, einzueins architektur, franz-architekten, zwoPK Landschaftsarchitektur, Schenker Salvi Weber Architekten, architekt günter mohr, idealice, LOSTINARCHITECTURE, miss_vdr architektur, space craft ARCHITEKTUR und bauchplan.

“He is an inspiration”. Norman Foster
English / German
No other architect provided as many ideas and inspiration to construction in the second half of the 20th century as Frei Otto. Lord Norman Foster described this great pioneer of lightweight construction simply as “an inspiration”. Frei Otto explored the foundations of resource and energy-efficient building well before these issues received the attention of the wider public. By including users in construction planning and taking into account local and climatic conditions, he opened new avenues for the building industry. The publication provides insights on the key aspects of his work. At its heart was the search for natural designs and an exploration of formfinding and self-development processes. As such he created a whole universe of ideas using membrane, net and convertible roofs with umbrellas, grid shells, and
pneumatic structures. The book introduces his key works and highlights how his ideas were adopted and continued throughout the world. Irene Meissner, Architekturmuseum Technische Universität München; Eberhard Möller, chair of Architektur und Bauwesen, Hochschule Karlsruhe.

The federal state of Vorarlberg holds a distinguished position in wooden construction with an active and innovative scene, where tradespeople, planners and industrial enterprises build upon their possibilities and develop their field together. Hermann Kaufmann, as one of the key protagonists has been working with his team to push the material to its limits for decades. In regards to its size and industrial manufacturing, the Illwerke Zentrum Montafon has successfully made a quantum leap in wooden construction. The publication describes the emergence of the approximately 10,000m2 administration centre: from the influence of the water and the topography, from the development of the cubature defined by the static structure of the building system and the uniform conditions for all working spaces, to the change of the office culture due to the architecture, and finally, the integration of art in the construction.

Ceremonies, rituals und traditions – as well as the fascinating combinations of flavours and unusual ingredients, the culinary customs of Asian countries also arouse great interest in Western cultures. But how are spaces for Asian eating and cooking traditions and processes designed? What kind of surroundings are these kinds of food and drinks consumed in? This book presents the projects of Asian and European architects on both continents, ranging from tea houses and sake bars through to entire restaurants. How are architects adapting and interpreting this cuisine in “our” latitudes? How do they respond to the conditions and cultures in these spaces without simply simulating an “Asian decor”? Enhanced with selected recipes from individual restaurants and essays on various Asian cuisines and culinary cultures, the book is also a travel guide to Europe’s many special Asiatic spaces. Olympic venues after the Games
English / German
Olympic sports facilities are places that get a great amount of attention for a short period of time. In the recent years, media attention has rapidly increased, which reinforces the effect of temporary use even more. But what happens to the elaborately planned and expensive sports venues in the aftermath of the games? Photographer Bruno Helbling followed the fate of six venues with his camera: Athens (1896, 2004), Berlin (1936), Sarajevo (1998), Torino (2006), Beijing (2008), and Sochi (2014). His images are neither judgmental nor disavowing: he offers the viewer an objective yet aesthetically captivating look at what now awaits visitors to the respective sites. The variety of possible subsequent uses shown here – whether planned or unplanned – is both insightful and educational. At the same time, it demonstrates the effective-
ness of architecture in an environment that is beyond the reaches of planning control. A book that is both poetic and inspiring.

Architecture and photography in dialog Photography and architecture have a long and intense relationship – and both are accompanied by debates about how, as disciplines, they hover somewhere between service and art form. The book examines how photos are used to digitally reproduce, inform about, and archive buildings. Moreover, it is dedicated to the concept of the use of a building being the visual content of architectural photography, and also questions how the photograph influences the constructed reality. What is the status of architectural photography today? For one, photographs provide mass media exposure for the buildings; however, the photographers’ own attitude, interests, and style result in highly individual images of the built reality. They tell their own stories of the building, decide whether to capture it occupied or not, dynamic or naturalistic, with or without context, as a new building or in use. How does this photographic perspective affect the way in which buildings and their architects are perceived? Many architects collaborate for long periods of
time with specific photographers. How much do photographs influence the actual design? Which photos serve to publicize the building, which lend a new perspective? In today’s flood of images, where there is almost no difference between photographs and renderings, this publication refreshingly brings architectural photography to the fore while allowing a peek behind the scenes. In eight richly illustrated chapters, the relationship between architecture and photography is subjected to a changing view. The different positions enter into a fascinating dialog. Insights and visual beauty go hand in hand. Fantastic Infrastructures deals with media architecture and digital infrastructure. In concrete terms, with the relationship between different dimensions as well as the materiality of buildings and the intangibility of data. Since technical and functional studies have not yet yielded any concrete findings, the author speculatively pursues four issues: 1. An affair with phantoms: who do we want to meet in digital space, what kind of communication / interaction can potentially result? 2. Para-wishes: where can we live out our surreal wishes and what strategies do they pursue? 3. A catalog of a variety of spaces: what kind of data, information, things, spaces, and places are available in the world and how do our actions serve to combine them? 4. Garden presents: how can an idea become reality, in which ways do thoughts become physical reality? The author examines buildings and projects by Toyo Ito, Werner Sobek, Philippe Rahm, Usman Haque, Electroland, Troika, NOX and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Ben Rubin, and Olafur Eliasson.

Recent developments in computer science, particularly “data-driven procedures” have opened a new level of design and engineering. This has also affected architecture. The publication collects contributions on Coding as Literacy by computer scientists, mathematicians, philosophers, cultural theorists, and architects. The main focus in the book is the observation of computer-based methods that go beyond strictly case-based or problem-solutionoriented paradigms. This invites readers to understand Computational Procedures as being embedded in an overarching “media literacy” that can be revealed through, and acquired by, “computational literacy”, and to consider the data processed in the abovementioned methods as being beneficial in terms of quantum physics. “Self-Organizing Maps” (SOM), which were first introduced over 30 years ago, will serve as the concrete reference point for all further discussions. We know the specific strengths of various cities, are aware of their ranking, are able to discuss their density and growth. But what do all cities have in common, what do we know about the “lowest common denominator”? The “city as a species”, the “primal genetic material of the city”: this is the subject of A Quantum City. This colossal work is a love letter to the city and intellectual culture. We follow the fictional narrative figure, Orlando, beginning in 320 BC, on his odyssey through the Western world up to the present time. The book is divided into four interrelated chapters and can be read page by page in a discursive manner, however randomly browsing through the book also offers new and multi-faceted interpretations. Great intellectual achievements are compared with obscure and mundane events. A Quantum City offers an inspiring view of the city that is in us and around us.

The wilderness begins at our front door, but we rarely notice. City dwellers today rely more and more on modern technologies and numerous media channels and are increasingly losing the ability to navigate their own environment, let alone the wilderness, without the assistance of an app. Somehow isolated and without reference to other fellow living beings, we become more and more foreign to our basic, everyday lives… and lose contact with nature. Urban Wilderness is a guide to experiencing nature in the city, to creating an awareness of the fact that we share our urban space with other living beings. Scientific, philosophical, and artistic contributions provide a detailed explanation on the various aspects of urban wilderness and present a differentiated view of the urban environment. In addition, the book offers the interested reader an opportunity to increase his or her own perception of nature and experience the city as more vibrant. Landscape as a central aspect of a strategy for society
English / German
The more intensively we exploit the urban and rural landscape, the greater the demands we place on our environment and what it can provide. Demographic change, shrinking cities, urban expansion, climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources are confronting us with challenges of ever greater magnitude. Solar fields and bio-energy crops are changing the face of the landscape and new traffic and energy infrastructure criss-crosses the countryside. Meanwhile, vast efforts are being made to adapt existing infrastructure to meet changing demands. In the process, it has once again become clear that we must consider our use of natural resources not just from a local perspective but within a broader context. Green infrastructure strategies can take quite different forms, ranging from floodwater protection measures to the integration of traffic and energy systems and the development
of urban green. The goal for society is to improve the diversity and resilience of our environment and to minimize the effects of climate change. In essays, interviews and profiles of the best realized projects from the past few years, Green Infrastructure examines the challenges and tasks facing contemporary landscape architecture and what it can achieve to address them. This book is published on the occasion of the awarding of the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2015. Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten (bdla), Berlin

“Transformation design” is looking for new ways to change our behavior and society through new forms of innovation. The existing user-oriented approach of design must therefore be extended to one that is society-oriented. The concept of transformation is based on the anthropologist Karl Paul Polanyi and his book The Great Transformation (1944), which described the emergence of the now almost undisputed and globally widespread western market logic: the transformation of societies with markets into market societies, which he calls “dislodgment of the markets”. Meanwhile, leading think tanks are referring to Polanyi. They are calling for a new social contract and the “re-embedding” of the market into society. What are the possible instruments and contributions of design for this new “Great Transformation”? The variety of the above questions, answers, theories, methods, ideas, and projects suggests that “transformation design” is not in fact a discipline in itself, but that it will lead to a fruitful discourse. The book attempts to form an initial position in terms of this ambitious and ethical design perspective. It also seeks to inspire the international debate to push for a project of responsible design.

In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Eoos is one of the chariot draft horses of the sun god Helios; the design studio EOOS founded in Vienna 20 years ago is also a driving force, in the today’s globalized world of design. This is verified by more than 130 design awards and an impressive number of patents. EOOS pursues a consistent reduced design language, alternating between archaic and hightech and entirely free from stylistic affectations. This first and long overdue monograph on EOOS is divided into three parts, and is a source of inspiration, analysis, and documentation. Part one is based on a series of images, which gives insight into the “making of” – into the way in which EOOS approaches the design process. It shows references, links, drawings, research material, and finished products. In part two, EOOS assumes the form of first-person narrator to report on selected designs, backgrounds, and details of their histories. Part three documents in chronological order all the EOOS products that have gone into production, as well as projects and design experiments conceived purely by and for EOOS.
EOOS operates for clients such as Alessi, bulthaup, Herman Miller, Zumtobel, and others Elaborately designed monograph on the occasion of the exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna (MAK) Contains all produced designs as well as design experiments

The first monograph on the work of Michaela Schweeger shows the impressive range of her artistic practice for MPreis. Born and raised in Vienna, Schweeger set the tone for the future architecture of the MPreis supermarkets in Austria at the beginning of the 1980s. In her three decades of artistic directorship, a distinctive look has emerged that defines the economic and artistic position of this Tyrolean company: their interior and exterior spatial interventions and graphic designs follow a concept of diversity that is easily recognizable, yet possesses individual diversity. Schweeger’s design concept is versatile and extends to other disciplines. This extensive catalog of work includes texts by architecture historian Gabriele Reiterer and a photo essay by Hertha Hurnaus. Gabriele Reiterer is an architecture scientific researcher and Head of Büro für Kommunikation, Vienna

The central focus of this publication is the synthesis of science and art in the field of visual perception, in particular how early 19th century perceptual research into illusions, kinetic illusory figures, and illusory movement influenced “vision machine”, kinetic art of the 20th century and the computer-generated visual art of the 21st century. Professional artists have traditionally used innovative, scientific inventions involving light and perspective for their work as well as making use of “visual aids”. Since the beginning of the 1920s, artists like Marcel Duchamp have been experimenting with illusory movement. Based on these early ideas and artistic experiments, and due to its relationship with illusory space, there was a renewed interest in illusory contour, especially among representatives of kinetic art and op art. Seeing Motion provides an historical overview extending from the theories of experimental visual perception research (Hermann Helmholtz, Ernst Mach, Sigmund Exner, Wilhelm Stern, Vittorio Benussi, Max Wertheim, George Stratton, Ivo Kohler) to vision machine art (Alfons Schilling) and electronic-digital art (Jeffrey Shaw, Peter Weibel).

Dutch painting of the seventeenth century reflects its relationship to visible reality. It deals with ambiguities and contradictions. As an avant-garde artistic media, it also contributes to the emergence of a subjectivity towards the modern “bourgeois”. It discards subject matter from its traditional fixation with iconology and evokes different imaginations and semantizations – aspects that have not been sufficiently taken into account in previous research. The book is to be understood as an appeal for art history as a form of cultural science that analyses the semantic potential of art within discursive and social contemporary practices, and, at the same time, demonstrates its relevance today. Works by Rembrandt, Metsu, Vermeer, Hoogstraten, and others serve as exemplary case studies for addressing current debates in art history and cultural studies, such as representation of gender difference, relationship between text and image, and emotional discourse.
A new cultural studies perspective on Dutch painting of the 17th century Examines the possibilities and limits of the historical representation of gender difference

This extensive work dedicated to the unique textile art of Bhutan is an impressive illustration of how closely art, spirituality, and life are interwoven in the last of the Buddhist kingdoms in the Himalayas. It gives new insight into Bhutanese cosmology, worldview, culture, and society, which is associated with a variety of historical, philosophical, religious, social, and artistic perspectives. The remote mountain location, low-key foreign policy, and basic principles of Buddhism has made it possible for Bhutan, the last of the Buddhist kingdoms in the Himalayas, to preserve a remarkable form of textile art that is interwoven with all aspects of life. Karin Altmann shows us Bhutan textiles in their diversity: they are clothes and everyday objects, currency and commodity, mark important events as gifts during life, and are testament to the social status of a person. But they are also an integral aspect of religious festivals, dances, and rituals that provide insight into the mystical and religious beliefs of the Bhutanese people, and reflect the concept of gender in Bhutanese society. The book also tells the story of a country that is searching for a sensitive balance between tradition and progress in a globalized world.
Comprehensive presentation of textile art and how it interweaves with all aspects of life Fascinating insight into how art, spirituality, and social life are interwoven A complex and knowledgeable book with impressive pictures

The fourth volume of the chronological documentation of the MUSA, Museum Start Gallery Artothek’s collection, is dedicated to the 1980s. This phase of the hotly debated “postmodernism” is marked by the emergence of the art market that initially focused on “Neue Wilde” male-dominated painting. But the great attention paid to this international trend can be easily overlooked due to other trends that were emerging at the same time. The geometric abstraction of “Neue Geometrie” or “Neo Geo” was considered an alternative to the expressive tendencies in figurative painting, the dematerialization of art is another notable trend, and photography regains prominence for the first time since 1945. Concept and new media also play an important role, as does the computer, which begins to take on significance as a visual arts tool. Many artists were leading contributors to all of these fields.

Absencen is the comprehensive documentation of the artistic works of Beatrix Bakondy. Her work is determined by the analysis of the space and its constitutive parameters. Bakondy explores, surveys, and samples the spatial coordinates related to architectural, political, or social contexts, and then presents these in the form of drawings, objects, photographs, videos, and large-scale interventions. The thematic spectrum of her work is informed by the relationship between body and space, the way in which spatial perception is related to the subject, as well as the associated aspect of time. This publication brings Bakondy’s new work together wth contributions by 23 artists from the fields of visual arts, photography, theater, film, dance, architecture, and philosophy.

Actions and texts from the Institute for Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, developed for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, open a literary discourse of remembrance by the fourth generation: strange, unusual, disparate, lost and at the same time characterized by the desire to express themselves with compassion. The writers create unexpected approaches while examining both remembrance and forgetting. An inventory. At the University of Applied Arts Vienna, students developed texts and actions for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Who has room in their writing-space? Sometimes the language itself got in the way of finding access to this subject. The works are an expression of discord, in which memory might be shared, but remains open, with whom. Post-memory or postoblivion? The gap between the two became the project’s main focus: Words were pulled back and forth, meanings elicited and garnered. It is an attempt for the fourth generation to capture memories. Esther Dischereit, Ferdinand Schmatz, Institute of Language Arts, University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria

A Transitory Star The Late Bernini and his Reception [Ars et Scientia. Schriften zur Kunstwissenschaft. Band 10] PAGES ILLS. FORMAT
176 63 b/w 24,0 × 17,0 cm, Hardcover
Examining Bernini’s works from 1665 on, from Paris and Rome, this book demonstrates the wealth of material still to be drawn from close visual and material examination, archival research, and comparative textual analysis. On the whole, this collection deals with Bernini’s position as the leading creator of portraits – in oils, marble, monumental architecture, and metaphor – of some of the most powerful political players of his day. These studies speak to the growing distance of Gallic absolutism from the fading dreams of papal hegemony over Europe, and to the complexities of Bernini’s role as mouthpiece, obstacle, and flatterer of the Princes of the Papal States.

The most important architects of his time entrusted Jean Marot with their designs, and he knew how to give their ethereal ideas lasting tangibility. Which is precisely why Jean Marot’s prints, documenting 17th century French architecture, are of immense value to architectural history. And until today, his work has mainly been reduced to the role of a service rendered. Kristina Deutsch’s monograph is the first attempt to shift focus to the creative side of his work and sheds light on Marot’s sometimes extraordinarily free interpretations of drawings by other artists. Based on his most significant series of prints – and especially his etchings regarding the Louvre – Deutsch makes a detailed presentation of the parameters that characterize the aesthetic presentation of a structure. The book explores the historical connections between the notions of architectural interior, subjective space, human interiority, and represented space including virtual space. In the 18th century the notion of “interiority” understood as a paradigm of human subjectivity came to be articulated in a sustained way in architectural and visual, rather than only literary forms. While the notion of the interior and the processes of “interiorization” were, as Walter Benjamin demonstrated, the defining features of 19 th-century bourgeois culture, it is the different forms of conceptual assault on, or deconstruction of interiority that define the approach to space and self in 20 th and 21st century. The book examines models of understanding of “interiority” as these were developed in relation to the notions of space and spatial experience.
With a range of essays by international experts, spanning art history, architecture, landscape, literature, photography, contemporary art and exhibitions.

The portrait has been characterized as an art-form of contradictions since its very beginnings to the art of today. The genre is faced with the challenge of recording an individual and his or her character as a strictly specified object and, at the same time, of creating a work of art in its own right. Hence, various forms of portraiture are faced with an aesthetic conflict of solutions that oscillate between similarity to the subject and greatly abstracted works of invention. This volume collects the contributions of the homonymous “International Warburg College” of the University of Hamburg and is dedicated to the genre of portraiture across various media as well as its entire thematic range. Case studies by international authors examine the broad range of issues involved in this genre: from the exploration of the individual in the portrait, to the political function of the genre; from the stylization of the individual to mask, role, and type; and to the artists’ strategies of presentation in the self-portrait. In the field of art, concepts in which a work has been considered from the perspective the artists themselves have long been in fashion. They are reflected in how highly artists’ statements are valued, and characterize the working methods of art history and criticism. On this basis, the publication looks at the different genres of the biography and its periphery. It examines monographs that connect life and work in the form of an artist’s biography, as well as the “masquerade” of the autobiography and what artists say about themselves and their work in interviews or in programmatic statements. It also takes an in-depth look at the memoirs of art historians and the academic biography of the scholar.

On December 13, 1933, the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek (K.W.B.) Warburg left its home in Hamburg and went into exile in London, salvaging the books and painting collection of its founder Aby Warburg. The scholarly arrival of the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek in the intellectual life of the British metropolis, which, in 1944, finally resulted in the integration of the Warburg Institute in the University of London, started an ongoing process of intellectual exchange between German and English research traditions that is still going on today. Essays by internationally renowned scholars, among them many witnesses to the Warburg Institute’s intellectual work of the early years, are dedicated to how the intellectual approach of the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek contributed to the English scholar community. The publication also examines how the move to London affected the research of the K.B.W. and how it made the Warburg Institute one of the world’s most important humanities research facilities.

This applies not only to the existing natural world, but also to what humans create, which, in form the form of artifacts – from the hand-held ax to linguistic theory – also approaches design in terms of both object and challenge. The process of formation begins with the study of chaos, a constantly renewed allusion to divine creation. This topos of the beginning – the white paper, the stain of paint, the cold clay, or the open gap between buildings – has been a core element of discussing art since Pliny, and it found its continuation in art theory. Yet, if form is removed from a thing, the opposite comes into play. The material aesthetic debate regarding formlessness has always been subject to the condition that matter is formless in itself. Scholars are increasingly investigating photography’s broad cultural role, expanding our understanding of the diversity of photographic practices. Kim Timby contributes to this new history of photography by examining the multifaceted story of images that animate with a flick of the wrist or appear vividly three-dimensional without the use of special devices – both made possible by the lenticular process. Using French case studies, this volume broadly weaves 3D and animated lenticular imagery into scientific and popular culture, from early cinema and color reproduction to the birth of modern advertising and the market for studio portraits, postcards, and religious imagery. The motivations behind the invention and reinvention of this pervasive form of imagery, from the turn of the twentieth century through the end of the predigital era, shed new light on our relationship to photographic realism and on the forceful interplay in photography between technological innovation and the desire to be entertained.

Since the signing of the World Heritage Convention, the idea of protecting and making use of the cultural and natural heritage has gained in popularity. Over time, however, models for utilization have been developed that are no longer based solely on ideas of sustainability. They are shaped to a growing degree by commercial interests. This publication outlines these developments and develops approaches for dealing with their problematic effects.

This publication is the fourth volume in the series Heritage Studies and aims to reflect upon the many dimensions of sustainability and sustainable development within Heritage Studies discourse. Sustainability as a concept and sustainable development as a goal are presented in official discourses and policies within UNESCO’s understanding of heritage, in its paradigmatic reflections and in the diversity of theories and methods, including many different and sometimes conflicting understandings of sustainability within this discourse. Thus, this publication presents the diversity of Heritage Studies as an academic discipline in itself. Furthermore, the contributors of this publication discuss sustainability as it directly concerns the potentials of the different approaches for World Heritage and for Intangible Heritage. The inclusion of the four dimensions of sustainability, which are environmental, economic, social and cultural, into Heritage Studies discourse opens a new perspective on the discourse itself.
