A book about the late oeuvre of the Austrian architect, designer and theorist Josef Frank, whose seminal work has generated new interest following the successful exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna. Josef Frank is seen as an important visionary at the early stages of the Moderne movement and an outspoken critic of its dogmatism. With his unconventional designs he not only left his mark on Viennese culture at the beginning of the previous century, but also influenced the “Scandinavian style”. From the mid-1930s, Frank lived predominantly in Sweden. There he worked for the Svenskt Tenn company, which still maintains the largest part of his designs in its range. This bibliophilic book introduces Frank’s late, unbuilt building projects, as well as his timeless furniture and fabric designs.

Hong Kong’s border with Shenzhen is dissolving. By 2047, the border will likely not exist. Integration with the Mainland will remove distinctions created by the “One Country Two Systems” policy. The uncertainty surrounding what will happen has created anxiety relating to law, identity, freedom of speech, and voting rights. Caught in this debate is the Frontier Closed Area, a 1951 undeveloped buffer zone of estuaries, fish farms, forests, villages and military posts. Informal settlements made up of corrugated iron shacks and other materials are a ubiquitous feature in the megacities of Africa, Asia and Latin America. In response to the enormous influx of migrants from the countryside, the informal city experienced a phenomenal growth. While rightly criticized for their lack of hygiene and for their low-level living conditions, these shelters nevertheless provide planning strategies and possibly even a roadmap to a resilient city in an emerging territory. The unregistered economic activities associated with them proliferate in a similar way and basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. The first volume shows how, after the Second World War, against the background of existentialism, new monumentality, and socialist realism, quite similar concepts and strategies were developed in order to find answers to questions relating to adequate structures for new forms of community and identity.
The authors assess the developments from 1960 to 1980, when both eastern and western Europe experienced a construction boom of new dimensions on the back of a knowledg transfer between East and West. Their research confirms a change in attitude that can still be felt today – recession, social changes, and environmental problems led to criticism of the then contemporary concepts of modernity.
Instead of emphasizing the differences between East and West, the search in this volume was for a joint cultural heritage. The contributions question terms such as “Moderne” and “post-modern”, and show how architecture could again represent local, regional, and national identity.

Human empathy has its limits. Never being able to see through Another’s eyes, never to feel what Another feels – this dilemma is the starting point of Wagner’s current research on art’s function as a means of communication. By combining different theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches, her research clarifies why art expands our limits in communication with Another, and why nevertheless it always fails as an attempt to connect directly with Another. At the same time, the potential of art as a dynamic communication medium becomes apparent in the approximative search for new design opportunities – not only does it provide a promising setting to the insuperableness of loneliness, it also provides a form for the approach to Another. Hanakam and Schuller are tricksters. As artists and researchers, they remodel the rules of fine art, creating idiosyncratic orders and new world designs incorporated in videos and objects. The artefacts of the two artists from Vienna are “Gestalt-changers”; they change their outer shape and re-appear in a number of different contexts. The trickster art book illustrates the oeuvre and provides an insight into its making using multi-page photo spreads from video stills, and production photographs. The Arkadikon essay captures readers and leads them to contemporary hypothetical landscapes, deconstructing them as modern surrogates of an increasingly virtual world. The artists discuss ideal, pop, aura and abduction with Uta Grosenick, Wolfgang Ullrich, Lois Weinberger, amongst others.

Wegerer became internationally known for his graphic paper sculptures, space installations, and interdisciplinary exhibition projects. The publication represents a cross-section through his artistic oeuvre – starting with the latest graphics work and exhibitions it explores the creative processes and artistic concepts of the work, both topically and diagrammatically. Pictures of completed work and image spreads specifically designed for the publication are juxtaposed with essays and text contributions from authors from the worlds of art, philosophy and music. The Annunciation: a specific event recounted in the Bible and often represented in artworks, but also the prototype of many other announcements throughout the history of Western culture. This volume proposes new readings of pictorial Annunciations from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period – treating aspects such as witnesses, inscriptions and architecture – as well as analyses of some visual echoes, reenactments of the announcement to Mary in sacred and profane contexts up to the twenty-first century. Among the latter are included Venetian decoration glorifying the state, a Jean-Luc Godard film, a video art piece by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and a saint’s bedroom turned into a pilgrimage site.

Magical images are generally associated with early periods in history or with “primitive” phases of human culture. Since ancient times, pictorial punishments were known, in which the magical presence of humans was adopted in the work of art. However, even in our enlightened presence, such historic iconoclasm has a fascinating afterlife, for example in the attacks on monuments or election posters. The African cult object, the miracle-performing image of the Madonna, and the talisman, as well as the revered picture of a rock or film star – they all present research with comparable challenges. This current volume investigates magical images from the perspective of anthropology and the media, in the quest to find an answer to the question of what makes a work of art a magical image.
