Founded in Los Angeles in 1998, GRAFT is a global architectural practice which now maintains branches in Berlin and Beijing. The international practice, which is involved in architectural, urban, and product design – as well as branding – is known for its experimental and interdisciplinary designs as well as for its strong social commitment. The publication documents only projects characteristic of this social responsibility – it portrays architecture as an active tool for driving, in a global context, the development of places worth living in. One key project is

With Josef Frank (1885–1967), the catalogue for the exhibition in the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), Vienna, focuses on one of the most important Austrian architects of the 20th century. In addition to his groundbreaking architectural oeuvre, the discussion considers Frank as a designer who must be thanked for his many important stimuli to international design that are still valid today. As an architect and designer who is still “contemporary”, Frank was known for his pragmatic design approach: for him, the qualities of social experience were more important than formal aspects. His ideas of an uncontrived and unpretentious utilitarian expedience, which was focused on an independent, free, enlightened housing and living culture beyond all stylistic dogmas and fashionable conventions, is more topical today than ever.

A book about the late oeuvre of the Austrian architect, designer and theorist Josef Frank, whose seminal work has generated new interest following the successful exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna. Josef Frank is seen as an important visionary at the early stages of the Moderne movement and an outspoken critic of its dogmatism. With his unconventional designs he not only left his mark on Viennese culture at the beginning of the previous century, but also influenced the “Scandinavian style”. From the mid-1930s, Frank lived predominantly in Sweden. There he worked for the Svenskt Tenn company, which still maintains the largest part of his designs in its range. This bibliophilic book introduces Frank’s late, unbuilt building projects, as well as his timeless furniture and fabric designs.

Over the past 50 years, the architectural office von Gerkan, Marg und Partner has realised 400 projects worldwide – from single-family homes to cultural edifices and office buildings, from transport facilities to master plans. Many of the buildings were constructed throughout Asia – yet how to build in the cultural environment and on the proper scale in China and Vietnam, for example? What sort of knowledge can be transferred from construction work in Europe – and how much do construction projects, in their sociologically and culturally familiar contexts, benefit from the experienced gained there? Various principles, conditions and times determine the context in which gmp operates. The extract included herein from the gmp portfolio draws parallels between current domestic and international projects, while supplemental references to earlier buildings offer a look back at the office’s development.

In the densely populated urban areas of Japan, small houses with unusual spatial concepts and surprising layout solutions are emerging on narrow strips of land that would normally be considered unsuitable for home construction. Yet it’s not only this sense of space, but also the sensory use of materials and a feel for aesthetics skilfully combined with traditional elements that have fascinated architects outside of Japan. The fact that most of the constructive solutions do not correspond to Central European standards is irrelevant: It’s the innovative approaches that serve as a source of inspiration. This volume presents the latest developments in residential projects from recent years. In addition to lavish photospreads and layout depictions, a selection of detailed solutions are presented that can be adapted to western standards. Christian Schittich editor-in-chief DETAIL, Munich

How much house does a man need?

English

French

The space we live in, reduced to a minimum, has been fascinating us for generations – the writer Thoreau lived in a self-built hut in the forest from 1845–1847. In 1952, Le Corbusier built a hut at the Côte d’Azur for himself and his wife. Inspired by this, Urs Peter Flückiger, built with his students, an ecologically and economically sustainable cabin in the Texan prairie. All three projects share the idea of minimal space and its relationship with the surrounding nature. In text, drawings, and photographs, this book analyses the three projects and shows

parallels and similarities. Inspired by Tolstoy’s story How Much Earth Does A Man Need?, the author asks: “How much house does a man need?”, thereby providing a pointed contribution to the current discussion on the requirement for housing. Fundamental introduction to an important field of architectural design For those who teach and those who learn Versatile and vivid presentation

Liliane Wong head of interior architecture department, Rhode Island School of Design, USA

English

Available October 2016

Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. On the background of long years of teaching and publishing, and using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas and beyond, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects. History and theory, building typology, questions of materials and construction, aspects of preservation, urban as well as interior design are dealt with in ways that allow to approach adaptive reuse as a design practice field of its own right.

The publication investigates the opportunities for upgrading the spatial structure of apartments created during the post-war building boom between 1960 and 1970. The authors analyze typical existing layouts in the context of social developments which, in recent decades, have led to significant changes in the form of living and in the structure of households. To what extent do the functionally optimized housing units meet the requirements of today’s society, and how adaptable are they to new forms of living? Is it possible to achieve a workable result with small interventions? In the theoretical part the authors discuss theories on design strategies and political transformation processes, the importance of which is demonstrated in the project part using practical contemporary examples. The building physics and comfort-relevant properties of gypsum drywall construction make it a particularly sustainable and versatile construction method. The book links the great architectural and sculptural potential of this building method with its construction requirements. Its focus is on the diversity of the system, its specific prerequisites, and its systematic implementation in design ideas. The space concept and elements in existing and new buildings are analyzed, and their implementation illustrated in detail. In addition, numerous examples of details and building

components explain the effect of light, color, material, surface, and construction. Drawings at different scales illustrate the tectonic relationships in space.

Building openings provide light, ventilation and climate control for rooms. At the same time, they are essential functional and design elements of facades, enabling communication between indoor and outdoor spaces as transparent or translucent structural components. Similar to the entire building envelope, windows and exterior doors must meet exacting standards for materials, construction types and installation conditions, as well as for fire, noise and thermal insulation, energy efficiency, airtightness and building security. Volume 1 provides in-depth technical information about facade openings. In additions to standards and safety features, the publication covers materials, components, construction types and specifics of structural connections, including solutions on how to deal with existing older or historic windows.

Materials and their finishes lend buildings and interiors their distinctive characters. Yet, which criteria persuade architects to use or not use a particular material? How do they find the right one among a seamlessly endless array of materials? Today, material selection is usually kept completely separate from local conditions and traditions and is rarely restricted by design requirements. This volume, part of the “best of Detail” series, provides guidance while presenting different approaches of renowned architecture firms in how they select materials. It also provides an insight into material research and technological innovations that are perfect for experimentation. Last but not least, several completed architectural projects from Detail publications from the past four years offer abundant inspiration for the reader’s own work. Although traditionally a building material of the warmer climate zones, bamboo is becoming increasingly popular amongst architects in the northern hemisphere; bamboo has several advantages – it is very stable, of low weight, and highly elastic, in addition to being readily available as well as renewable. The applications of bamboo in architecture have become significantly wider and diversified, so that today, even structures with large spans – such as bridges – are built with this material. The new and revised second edition of this manual provides a practical, systematic overview of the numerous potential applications and processing methods of this renewable material. The comprehensive presentation of groundbreaking bamboo buildings has been updated with more recent projects.

Increasingly, innovative construction design relies on interdisciplinary cooperation between architects, engineers and the construction industry. GAM.12 – Structural Affairs takes a look at the mechanics of cooperation in the dynamic work processes of contemporary architecture. New digital methods, materials, and production methods require the participation of more and more specialised stakeholders in the design and construction process – they influence and determine the respective architectural design process from the outline idea through to detailed design and construction. A new wood economy

English

Faced with man-made climate change and the need to provide housing for a growing world population, society needs to rethink the way future buildings are made. Wood is a truly renewable building material that is unlimited in supply if its growth and harvest are sustainably managed. Recent technological advancements in engineering allow the use of timber for the construction of multi-story structures, turning our buildings into carbon sinks rather than becoming sources for CO2-emissions.

The book presents convincing arguments for the increased use of wood as an alternative to more fossil fuel intensive building materials, with the goal of demonstrating that an integrated approach can have the potential for positive impact on the environment, local economies, and the building culture at large. Hong Kong’s border with Shenzhen is dissolving. By 2047, the border will likely not exist. Integration with the Mainland will remove distinctions created by the “One Country Two Systems” policy. The uncertainty surrounding what will happen has created anxiety relating to law, identity, freedom of speech, and voting rights. Caught in this debate is the Frontier Closed Area, a 1951 undeveloped buffer zone of estuaries, fish farms, forests, villages and military posts. In contrast, Shenzhen, has exploded into a metropolis of 15 million plus. The book explores this unique border ecology. Design strategies inserted within this ecology promote alternate forms of development. The example widens the discourse on borders to raise critical issues that impact the contemporary city.

Addis Ababa is one of the fastest transforming environments on the globe and a prototype of an emerging territory. What can architecture and urban design as disciplines contribute to such transformation? According to which criteria can processes of the kind encountered in Addis Ababa be evaluated? And, how can all of this be steered? Aiming to identify sustainable strategies – rather than upholding an a priori vision of an ideal city – the publication acknowledges the heterogeneous conditions of urban territories. The book highlights questions of method and procedure that can be transferred to other ’cities of change’. This revised edition covers recent developments, such as the increasing influence of China in African countries or the chances of high-density, lowrise developments.

Important contribution to the current discourse on urban theory Renowned author from the GSD, Harvard University

Prof. Neil Brenner Graduate School of Design, Harvard University

Available July 2016

Urbanization is transforming the planet, within and beyond cities, at all spatial scales. In this book, Neil Brenner mobilizes the tools of critical urban theory to deconstruct some of the dominant urban discourses of our time, which naturalize, and thus depoliticize, the enclosures, exclusions, injustices and irrationalities of neoliberal urbanism. In so doing, Brenner advocates a constant reinvention of the framing categories, methods and assumptions of critical urban theory in relation to the rapidly mutating geographies of capitalist urbanization. Only a theory that is dynamic – which is constantly being transformed in relation to the restlessly evolving social worlds and territorial landscapes it aspires to grasp – can be a genuinely critical theory.

Informal settlements made up of corrugated iron shacks and other materials are a ubiquitous feature in the megacities of Africa, Asia and Latin America. In response to the enormous influx of migrants from the countryside, the informal city experienced a phenomenal growth. While rightly criticized for their lack of hygiene and for their low-level living conditions, these shelters nevertheless provide planning strategies and possibly even a roadmap to a resilient city in an emerging territory. The unregistered economic activities associated with them proliferate in a similar way and basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. Examples of these economic phenomena are microloans, bottom-up insurance or professions such as the “Kuré-Yalew” (refuse collector). The first volume shows how, after the Second World War, against the background of existentialism, new monumentality, and socialist realism, quite similar concepts and strategies were developed in order to find answers to questions relating to adequate structures for new forms of community and identity.

The authors assess the developments from 1960 to 1980, when both eastern and western Europe experienced a construction boom of new dimensions on the back of a knowledg transfer between East and West. Their research confirms a change in attitude that can still be felt today – recession, social changes, and environmental problems led to criticism of the then contemporary concepts of modernity.

Instead of emphasizing the differences between East and West, the search in this volume was for a joint cultural heritage. The contributions question terms such as “Moderne” and “post-modern”, and show how architecture could again represent local, regional, and national identity.

The book Design Unplugged illustrates very lucidly that, in the digital age, analogue hand sketches still fulfil an important role as a form of illustration, having taken on a new quality. Thomas Feichtner, an internationally established designer based in Vienna, has rediscovered hand sketching as a key element of his design process. His book does not contain any illustrations of completed work in the field of furniture product design, but only shows pencil sketches – some of which previously unpublished – that have preceded the products. They provide an authentic insight into the daily work of the successful product designer. Design reduced to pencil and paper – unplugged – rather than the full orchestration of all digital possibilities.

Human empathy has its limits. Never being able to see through Another’s eyes, never to feel what Another feels – this dilemma is the starting point of Wagner’s current research on art’s function as a means of communication. By combining different theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches, her research clarifies why art expands our limits in communication with Another, and why nevertheless it always fails as an attempt to connect directly with Another. At the same time, the potential of art as a dynamic communication medium becomes apparent in the approximative search for new design opportunities – not only does it provide a promising setting to the insuperableness of loneliness, it also provides a form for the approach to Another. Sophie-Carolin Wagner studied Economics and Digital Art, she lives and works in Vienna.

Hanakam and Schuller are tricksters. As artists and researchers, they remodel the rules of fine art, creating idiosyncratic orders and new world designs incorporated in videos and objects. The artefacts of the two artists from Vienna are “Gestalt-changers”; they change their outer shape and re-appear in a number of different contexts. The trickster art book illustrates the oeuvre and provides an insight into its making using multi-page photo spreads from video stills, and production photographs. The Arkadikon essay captures readers and leads them to contemporary hypothetical landscapes, deconstructing them as modern surrogates of an increasingly virtual world. The artists discuss ideal, pop, aura and abduction with Uta Grosenick, Wolfgang Ullrich, Lois Weinberger, amongst others.

Wegerer became internationally known for his graphic paper sculptures, space installations, and interdisciplinary exhibition projects. The publication represents a cross-section through his artistic oeuvre – starting with the latest graphics work and exhibitions it explores the creative processes and artistic concepts of the work, both topically and diagrammatically. Pictures of completed work and image spreads specifically designed for the publication are juxtaposed with essays and text contributions from authors from the worlds of art, philosophy and music. Two invited artists, Judith Unterpertinger and Barbara Höller, even designed visual interventions as a reply to the artist’s design position. Michael Wegerer studied at the Univ. of Applied Arts Vienna and at the Royal College of Art in London; he lives and works in Vienna.

Turbulence and Reconstruction is an anthology of 13 interdisciplinary essays. They focus on the question of how art, design and technology can contribute to viewing social and environmental problems in a new way. The essays illustrate the complex relationship between cause and effect. They depart from the common “all black or all white” approach, and ask whether change is not also part of natural development. Cultural heritage in the Euro-Asian contact zone

English

This book unravels the formation of the modern concept of cultural heritage by charting its colonial, postcolonial-nationalist and global trajectories. By bringing to light many unresearched dimensions of the 12th Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat during its modern history, the study argues for a conceptual, connected history that unfolded within the transcultural interstices of European and Asian projects. It discusses the multiple lives of Angkor Wat from its “discovery” in the 19th century, and its physical representations in museums and universal/colonial exhibi-

The Annunciation: a specific event recounted in the Bible and often represented in artworks, but also the prototype of many other announcements throughout the history of Western culture. This volume proposes new readings of pictorial Annunciations from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period – treating aspects such as witnesses, inscriptions and architecture – as well as analyses of some visual echoes, reenactments of the announcement to Mary in sacred and profane contexts up to the twenty-first century. Among the latter are included Venetian decoration glorifying the state, a Jean-Luc Godard film, a video art piece by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and a saint’s bedroom turned into a pilgrimage site.

As the original text of European literature, Dante’s Commedia has been the subject of an exegetical tradition that has spawned numerous commentaries and interpretations in both text and powerful images. The poet himself was very familiar with the art of his time; the imagery of his language has lucidly illustrated the idea of hell, the mountain of purgatory, and paradise for generations of readers and has motivated great artists – from Giotto to Blake, Delacroix, and Rodin – to repeated interpretations. The first volume of the series “Refigurationen” presents this dialogue between literature and the fine arts, which often becomes the catalyst for innovative concepts and for medial experience that pushes the boundaries while also touching on basic questions relating to poetry and fine art. Magical images are generally associated with early periods in history or with “primitive” phases of human culture. Since ancient times, pictorial punishments were known, in which the magical presence of humans was adopted in the work of art. However, even in our enlightened presence, such historic iconoclasm has a fascinating afterlife, for example in the attacks on monuments or election posters. The African cult object, the miracle-performing image of the Madonna, and the talisman, as well as the revered picture of a rock or film star – they all present research with comparable challenges. This current volume investigates magical images from the perspective of anthropology and the media, in the quest to find an answer to the question of what makes a work of art a magical image.

In the interaction between original and copy, this book is concerned with the copy – from the medieval handwritten copy through to authorized copies of cult images, from the practice of copying princely collections through to reprography – highlighting the multi-faceted, articulated focus of copies on their original and the specific aesthetic and medial characteristics. Beyond the usual innovation imperatives, the contributions investigate artistic repetition and its inherent qualities, directing the reader to its specific form, intention, and content. In this context, the faithfulness of the copy proves to be a characteristic of production – even when, or perhaps because, the faithful copy in essence does not want to create anything new. Dimensions and Typologies August 2016 | 568 pp. | 1200 figs. Hardcover RRP EUR 119.95 / US$ 149.95 / GBP 89.99 ISBN 978-3-0356-0323-1 Paperback RRP EUR 69.95 / US$ 84.95 / GBP 52.99 ISBN 978-3-0356-0324-8

In formulating a design concept into a viable plan, architects oscillate constantly between two planes of observation: the actual design task in the context of planning typologies such as residential buildings, office buildings, museum, or airport, and the individual room, meaning the kitchen, office, classroom, sanitary rooms, storage rooms, and so on. Planning Architecture offers architects and students a thoughtout planning tool, in which two main sections reciprocally complement one another: the “spaces” and the “typologies” between which the planner can flexibly oscillate depending on his or her plane of observation. These two sections are flanked by an introductory chapter explaining the basis and framework for typological design, as well as a “reference section” at the end of the book that clearly lists general dimensions and units, regulations and standards.
