“Constructing Architecture is in the best sense a manual [...] that presents materials, components, and structures, based on examples of remarkable architecture and placed in a broader cultural context. It is therefore also suitable for lay readers who want to know how architecture is created.” Neue Zürcher Zeitung “So, who needs this book? If students read it, they will never again have to shy away from exams, and besides learning some technical tricks, they would understand the meaning of the whole thing. The book is well worth reading and it is fun to browse through, which makes it also recommendable for others.” Bauwelt

From the Project Planning to the Construction Site: Basics for a Career Start

English

The core task of the classic architect, in addition to architectural design and planning work, is management of the construction project: from planning operations and tendering, to scheduling and cost planning and construction management. These important practical tasks are usually only covered during studies by one subject: Construction Management or Construction Economics, and thus treated as less significant. But every architect must master these abilities in order to manage and realize his or her own projects successfully. How are the individual processes interrelated? How are professionals networked? How do the different levels of organization function? Because of tight deadlines and strongly interdependent processes, scheduling is an

important prerequisite for successful project implementation. Architects have a duty to control all those involved and to procure their services at the right times. “Basics Architectural Project Management” brings together the successful individual volumes, “Project Planning,” “Tendering,” “Construction Scheduling,” and “Site Management” from the student series BASICS into one volume, which is completed by the new, not yet published book “Construction Budgeting,” and answers in one publication the crucial hows and whys of construction.

The companion for advanced semesters and career starts, completed by the new volume “Construction Budgeting” All other established foundation books and textbooks assume a basic knowledge: the BASICS start at zero A Basics for the hands-on, practical side of the profession The basis for turning the plan into reality

State-of-the-art Manual on Architectural Design as Professional Practice

English

The task of design is to integrate functional requirements, contextual conditions and technological means into the creation of a work of architectural culture. After twenty years of practice, a team involving Ignacio Dahl Rocha, Kenneth Ross, Christian Leibbrand, Manuela Toscan and others of the Lausanne-based Swiss office of Richter • Dahl Rocha & Associés has undertaken to formulate the knowledge behind their architectural practice in a comprehensive manual. Covering the full span from initial design, building typology, technology to the cooperation with other professions in four extensive sections, this book conveys the concepts, methods and details that constitute the tools

of state-of-the-art architectural projects. The material used is completely first-hand, with the technical drawings redrawn to this purpose, coming from projects like the muchacclaimed integral renovation of Nestlé Headquarters, from residential, office and healthcare buildings to the groundbreaking Swiss Tech Convention Centre on the Lausanne Polytechnic Campus. Written with the editorial collaboration of Denise Bratton, this book sets new standards for architectural publications as tools for design.

The giant architectural practices that set the pace today rarely have the capacity to devote their attention to a single house. This collection of six houses is the product of the partners of Denton Corker Marshall, an architectural practice that over the past 40 years has built on the largest scale across Asia, Australia and Europe. They have designed representational buildings such as embassies and law courts. They have built skyscrapers, conceived masterplans and created landmarks and landscapes. They have built museums, war memorials, convention centres, and hotels. Works such as the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, the Melbourne Museum and Embassies in Beijing, Tokyo and Jakarta demonstrate the practice’s significant contribution to the global architectural scene, but – as they say of themselves – from time to time they enjoy the opportunity to design houses. This monograph presents a collection of houses built for friends and colleagues, for people who work together, who share values and relationships and priorities. The houses display, as Deyan Sudjic writes in his introduction, a delicacy and precision that comes close to jewellery.

The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) is a twentieth century classic. He became world renowned for planning and building Brasilia, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. In 1988 he was awarded the Pritzker Prize. His buildings are deeply respectful of the site and are characterized by an unmistakable, almost Baroque design impulse. This second and revised edition of “Oscar Niemeyer: A Legend of Modernism” has a new preface and an updated biography and list of works. It contains essays that analyze the important and current aspects of Niemeyer’s work, as well as texts by Niemeyer himself. Topics include the place of Niemeyer’s work in modern Brazilian architecture, his work as urban planner, the aspect of landscape in his practice, and his influence on architecture in Germany. Niemeyer, who was highly prolific up until his death, is one of the most productive architects in history with over 600 buildings to his name. He was considered the “last giant of modern architecture.”

A New Look at the Architectural Achievements of an Icon

English

This essential and comprehensive Mies monograph focuses in its analysis on Mies’ design intentions: it reconstructs the buildings in their original state, examines them from the present day perspective and rediscovers the inspiring architecture of a great modern master.

The book presents eighty of Mies’ built works in chronological order. Approximately thirty of these works are analyzed in detail in three parts. In the first part, the construction is documented in its built state; for this, all of the ground plans were redrawn by the author. The second part outlines the changes to the bulidings and the third part develops the results of this investigation with regard to their relevance to the contemporary view of Mies’ work.

Where Architecture Begins: Architects Open Their Offices

English/ German

What does it actually look like in the offices of people who think on a day-to-day basis about good architecture? Where do the ideas and designs of contemporary architecture originate? Seventy architectural firms, in German-speaking countries and internationally, open their doors and show us the spaces in which they work. There is a view of the outside of each architectural firm, one of the interior, and a floor plan, where the work places of the owners are highlighted. This not only exemplifies the similarities and differences between the architects, but also the internal organization of the offices as well as the attitude expressed by each respective building. The rooms in which architects work

and receive visitors today tell of a profession that is itself a polyglot, down to earth, makeshift, honest, ironic, serious, or playful. Employees work in skyscrapers and barns, in townhouses and storage buildings, on the water and in the woods. The exemplary views of the seventy architectural firms are accompanied by a thematic introductory essay, a fundamental observation of continuities and discontinuities of the “atelier/studio”, and contributions by participating architects.

Single-family houses are becoming increasingly outdated. They offer no response to demographic change or to the fact that there are fewer and fewer life-long relationships. They are often too inflexible for new family models or ways of cohabitation. This publication presents projects in recent years in Japan, which respond to the need for new forms of housing. The architects are developing solutions that allow residents to live together but still Mayntain enough distance and privacy. The presented apartment types and their layout allow for a variety of life models. Particularly interesting here is the use of spaces that provide a gradual transition from public to private space —

an approach to building that, according to experts, could revolutionize western residential architecture. The publication portrays these new forms of building and living based on prominent Japanese examples that include Shigerun Ban, Sou Foujimoto, and SANAA.

The Design Professions’ Contribution to Alleviating Water Scarcity

English

Water scarcity is becoming increasingly familiar to us. Although access to water resources is an issue of global concern, arid climates are where necessity begets inventions that may serve as examples for action or prevention across a multitude of climate zones and geographies. In facing the prevalence of water scarcity across the globe, due to a mix of climatological and man-made factors, the question we must ask ourselves today is Water for What? Which approaches can landscape, urban and architectural designers take in order to apply their specific professional skills and means? What potential do available technologies and materials offer, and what methods and tools

can be derived from social engagement? Based on five years of research, the preparation of and feedback on a traveling exhibition, as well as a major conference, the results of the Out of Water project are laid out here in a series of case studies and essays by international experts, including analytical drawings of both projected and implemented solutions.

Designing memorials as open spaces, as opposed to buildings with defined functions, is one of the most complex and precarious tasks in the built environment. In Germany there are many such difficult places and the practice of sinai landscape architects have an impressive record of designing them, dealing with the questions and demands they involve, as well as the processes leading to potential solutions. Examples include the cemetery for the victims of the March Revolution of 1848; the open spaces of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp memorial site and of three other former National Socialist sites; Platz des 9. November 1989, the place of the first Berlin Wall opening on November 9, 1989; and the site of the last full remains of the Berlin Wall, where fifty years after its construction the Berlin Wall Memorial was built. The projects are documented and presented to a broad audience in the landscape architect’s plans, photos by Klemens Ortmeyer, texts by Thies Schröder, and a comprehensive essay by the worldrenowned expert in the field, Peter Reichel.

Changes over the course of time is a specific category of landscape architecture in open spaces and with organic materials: sustainability, identity, the preservation and development of our natural environment and our built living environment are designed in and by time-based processes. What does this mean for the concrete implementation of landscape architectural concepts and current projects? In essays, interviews, and presentations of the best projects realized over recent years, Time Scales pinpoints the challenges, tasks, and performance of current landscape architecture. The book will appear on the occasion of the German Landscape Architecture Prize Awards Ceremony in the year of the 100th anniversary of the Federation of German Landscape Architects (bdla) and the international symposium “City and Landscape —  Future Scenarios” in September 2013.

While most attention is given to the booming mega-cities in China and the associated problems of over-population, the rural areas in China are being largely ignored. Yet, a sustainable development of the rural areas is precisely that, which will be decisive for China’s future. Through its rapid development into an industrial country, China now needs to tackle far-reaching problems such as increasing population, growing income gap between the poor and the rich, rural exodus, decreased agricultural production, and environmental pollution. Rural Urban Framework is a work group at the University of Hong Kong that not only researches the far-reaching changes of the last thirty years in China’s rural areas, but has also realized concrete

projects aimed at improving supply and infrastructure on site. In this publication, the authors present for the first time the results of their research as well as their built projects in the Chinese backlands, and question whether China’s only future model lies in cities. In an age where the globalization process is threatening the uniqueness and vitality of small towns, and where most urban planning discourse is directed at topics such as metropol-regions or mega-regions and world cities, the authors here emphasize the need to critically reflect on the potential of small towns. They illustrate how small towns can meet the challenge of a fast-paced, globalized world, and based on case studies, movements, programs, and strategies, present the local cultures that effectively and sustainably promote traditions and identities. Small towns often play a critical role in regional economies. When small towns focus on their specific characteristics and exploit their opportunities, they can become stable niches within regional, national, and global economies, and thus contribute significantly to shaping their future. The second edition is expanded to cover the intensive development of small towns in China and Korea. In addition, the authors examine the impact of the economic crisis on small towns and the recent development of the Slow City movement.

Design interventions for the reuse of existing structures must face the question of the past and the extent to which it should be included in a new design. This is the point of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on current issues in international adaptive reuse and interior architecture. Departing from a traditional limited understanding of interior design as geared to decoration and finishing, Int | AR looks at interior architecture as one of the professions that shape our built environment. The question about the presence of the past is particularly acute in buildings with a difficult history that are to become memorial places. From the Museum of Genocide Crimes in Cambodia via jail conversions in the USA to the revival of a defunct industrial port in Spain involving retired oil tankers, the project portraits and reflective essays discuss dealing with trauma, narration and recollection in adaptive reuse projects. Together with the title “Difficult Places” in landscape design, also published by Birkhäuser in the Fall 2013 program, this publication clearly demonstrates that memorial places are no longer an exclusive domain of architectural design.

Discovering the interplay between the form and structural behaviour of hyperbolic frameworks This publication is the first to analyse the interplay between the form and structural behaviour of hyperbolic frameworks. The effects of various factors are determined using parametric studies and load calculations. Analyses of Šuchov's original calculations, the reconstruction of the design process and the development of water towers show why Šuchov is considered to be a pioneer not only of lightweight construction but of parametric design processes as well.

Geometry, form, design and structural behaviour of hyperbolic frameworks Discovering the interplay between the form and structural behaviour of hyperbolic frameworks Comparison of historical calculations with the results of modern calculations

English

Vladimir G. Šuchov, who built the first hyperbolic lattice tower at the end of the 19th century, is considered to be the father of hyperbolic frameworks. This type of structure, which is totally unique in the history of architecture, is known for its superior stability and economic use of materials and, above all, for the striking and unmistakable form of its web-like structures. To this day, Šuchov’s structural support system is still used in a modified form in modern architectural designs such as the support frameworks of skyscrapers.

New paths for architects

English

In past years, architects have been confronted with a changed market, changed sets of tasks and also new requirements. Which strategies can they adopt to get commissions or spark interest in their projects? With selected examples, the author analyses the processes of individual architects since the 1950s. Beginning with the commencement of marketing in the North American post-war era he proceeds to then cast his view to contemporary times. Transformations in society and politics, the changed requirements of clients, and also the crisis in the economy and financial circles all influence the professional existence of architects. While pure construction itself was

the focus in previous times, today’s architects must adopt a wide variety of roles in relation to clients - ranging from consultant to mediator and brand designer. The book is intended to inspire architects to consider new options and unusual paths.

Buildings and their advertising effectiveness, negotiating between architecture and politics, and new challenges from a society in transition Evaluations of differing strategies with examples of projects from Bjarke Ingels, Ricky Burdett, Qingyun Ma, John Portman, Art Gensler and others

Heritage Studies in the age of globalization

English

The publication is the first in a new series on existing and innovative paradigms in Heritage Studies. The series aims at systematising and developing the academic discourse on heritage, which has yielded a wealth and breadth of contributions over the past few years. The publication offers its own emphasis by developing heritage studies with a perspective towards and as a contribution to human development. It thus offers a vision for the construction and establishment of a new discipline. The academic mainsprings and research interests of this repositioning of heritage studies as an academic discipline are discussed by internationally renowned thinkers and heritage practitioners. The pub-

lication thus establishes first important points for discussion. Central to this publication are questions concerning the sustainable protection and use of heritage, focussing on the world cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage, but equally questions on the relation of heritage and memory and how these could mutually enrich our understanding of heritage.

Thousands of people were driven into exile by Germany’s National Socialist regime from 1933 onward. For many German-speaking artists and writers Paris became a temporary capital. The archives of these exiles became “displaced objects” – scattered, stolen, confiscated, and often destroyed, but also frequently preserved. This book assesses previously unknown source material stored at the Moscow State Military Archive (RVGA) since the end of the war, and offers new insights into the activities of German-speaking immigrants in the 1930s in Paris and Europe. Against the backdrop of current debates surrounding displaced cultural goods and their restitution, this work seeks to facilitate a transnational, interdisciplinary scientific dialogue.

Examines previously unknown sources related to artists, art historians, dealers, and art critics living in exile Offers new insights into the activities of German-speaking immigrants in the 1930s in Paris

Museum science, museum analysis, museum history, and museum theory – all of these composite designations have come into our parlance in recent years. Above all, this expanding terminology underscores the growing scholarly interest in museums. In this new scholarship, a recurring assertion is that as an institution, the museum has largely functioned as a venue for the formation of specifically national identities. This volume, by contrast, highlights the museum as a product of transnational processes of exchange, focusing on the period from ca. 1750 to 1940.

A ground-breaking contribution to transnational art scholarship and museum history Contribution to a better understanding of museum practice and its international framing New perspecitves for the research on museum history

Asignificant contribution to the history of interactive relationships between the Islamic world, Europe, and America

English

By crossing disciplinary boundaries in the field of the humanities, this volume aims to elucidate Muhammad’s visualization in the West vis-à-vis his image in Islam. It does so not by relegating materials to geographical and/or linguistic spheres or by separating texts from images. Rather, it seeks to place various articles in thematic and theoretical conversation so as to explore more broadly how the Prophet has been constructed, visualized, narrated, encountered, revised, adapted, and adopted in multiple cultural traditions, in European and American traditions and in the world of Islam from the medieval era until the modern period.

The first volume to discuss Euro-American literary and artistic traditions in conjunction with and as related to the history of representations of Muhammad in the Islamic world It affords a more nuanced understanding of Euro-American relationships with Islamic lands from the earliest period until today
