Since architecture is generally conceived and built as stationary and sturdy, kinetic architecture exerts an special fascination. It can be described as the outcome of integrating movement into the built environment. Bolle Tham (b. 1970) und Martin Videgård (b. 1968) founded their architecture firm in Stockholm in 1999. Their House K and Double House (both completed in 2005) received widespread attention; they finally won international recognition with the Kalmar Museum of Art (which opened in 2008). They are among the young architects invited by Herzog & de Meuron to participate in the Ordos 100 project in China and are currently planning the new School of Architecture on the campus of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm; their Moderna Museet Malmö has just opened its doors. In their designs, Tham and Videgård take as their starting points the Nordic tradition – closeness to nature and economy of means – as well as the concrete parameters of the project on which they are working; the result, however, is buildings with surprising and fascinating forms. Editor Johan Linton is an architect and art historian working in Göteborg; photography: Åke E:son Lindman; the book was designed by renowned Swedish graphic designer Henrik Nygren.
In larger projects these days, architects are often purely service providers: under the control of those responsible for the project or the general contractors, the architecture is cut and trimmed for reasons of cost – with all the consequences we can increasingly observe in our cities. There is a way out of this dilemma, one that strengthens the position of the architect and at the same time permits higher quality architecture, as is impressively demonstrated by the architects Geninasca Delefortrie in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. They are their own clients; they identify properties with potential for development and work with the cities in question to develop building plans and concepts. They are also actively involved in financing and finding investors, and hence they are able to realize architecture that is as powerful as it is sensitive to the complex urban situations in which it stands. This monograph does not so much focus on the projects as it does on showing, based on the example of Geninasca Delefortrie’s particular approach, the opportunities that architecture and architects have to influence in a positive way project development, the awarding of contracts, and urban planning in general. Interviews and conversations with the architects establish the basic thematic structure. Each of the projects, including the multipurpose hall La Maladière in Neuchâtel, is assigned to a theme.

Renato Salvi (b. 1956) completed his studies at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich and at Sapienza University in Rome, and served as assistant professor under Flora Ruchat and Vincent Mangeat. In 1998, he started his own architectural firm in Delémont, the capital of the newly created Swiss canton of Jura. His design for the Transjurane A 16 highway has received international attention and recognition for the uncompromisingly contemporary and at the same time subtle way that its concrete bridges, tunnel entrances, and ventilation structures contrast with and accentuate the wild beauty of the Jurassic landscape. Other chapters of this first-ever monograph on the Swiss Italian architect document a selection of his remarkable singlefamily houses, school buildings, and renovations. Editor Bruno Marchand is a professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne).
Michele Arnaboldi, an architect from Ticino, who has worked for Luigi Snozzi, among others, founded his own firm in Locarno in 1995. He has made his reputation above all with residential architecture. He did, however, also attract attention when his design in collaboration with Raffaele Cavadini and Albert Speer und Partner won the internatio nal competition for the design of the Expo 2000 grounds in Hanover. This volume documents thirty - five of Arnaboldi’s projects, primarily residences in Switzerland and Italy but also public buildings such as the new cultural center in Lugano, the sports center in Tenero, La Carità hospital in Lugano, and the pavilion for the Locarno film festival. Two essays and an interview with Michele Arnaboldi provide deeper insight into his attitude towards design.

After graduating from the reputable Architectural Association in 1982 Fretton opened his own architect’s office. He attracted attention early on with the Lisson Gallery and the “Red House” (London). Although Karol Schayer was one of the most important figures of the Modern Movement he is little known outside Lebanon. This Complete Works edition by George Arbid provides the possibility to study a lifework of considerable importance. Using a wealth of previously unpublished original documents and illustrations this monograph reconstructs Schayer’s early career in Poland (1927–39), his years as an émigré in Turkey and Palestine (1939–46), and then his very successful and important creative period in architecture and furniture design in Lebanon (1946–70) with his successive partners Fritz Gotthelf, Bahij Makdisi and Wassek Adib. Thus the lifework of this modernist architect becomes understandable for the first time, and is shown to be clearly on a par with analogous achievements of the period around the world. This comprehensive and richly illustrated monograph is the result of many years of tireless research by George Arbid, Associate Professor at the American University of Beirut.

The town of Schlins in Vorarlberg has long been a Mecca for all those with an interest in clay construction. On the steep southern slope, the clay builder Martin Rauch worked together with Zurich architect Roger Bolts hauser to erect his new artist’s residence. From its foundation all the way to its flat roof, it is made entirely of excavated soil from the site on which it is built : the floors and arched ceilings , the plasterwork on ceiling and walls, the washstands, tiles, and stairs – all are made from the single material clay in its various forms. The house is a show house as well as the document of a unique collaboration. At the same time, it is a striking example of how, with the structural and design limitations of this « soft » and massive building technique, a spatially and tectonically adequate design can be achieved – and how an archaic building technique can be used in a contemporary manner. With today’s renewed focus on energetic and ecological consequences, clay construction, with its special ecological, organic, and aesthetic qualities, is again becoming a subject of widespread interest. The structure presented in this book has received national and international awards and represents a milestone in the field.
The Olgiati’s family estate is located in the historical town center of Flims. Rudolf Olgiati ( 1910–1995 ) purchased the property, known as “Dado”, in 1930 and throughout his life used it to realize his architectural thoughts and ideas. Today, Valerio Olgiati is living in his father’s house, and in 2008 he set up his much - acclaimed architectural firm on the former site of the barn. This publication portrays the life and work of both architects using the example of the house and studio – that is, through the transformations they have undergone at the hands of their residents over a period of near ly eighty years. It shows personal furniture and objects, the individual layout and design of the spaces and hence the penchants and attitudes of the two architects. At the same time this unusual portrait doc uments not only the relationship between father and son but also the characters of two generations and their understanding of architecture and aesthetics. Valerio Olgiati has worked as an architect in Los Angeles, Zurich and, since 2008, in Flims. He has been a visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, the AA in London, and at Cornell University in I thaca, New York. Since 2002 he has been professor at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio and since autumn 2009 he has held the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard. The unmistakable straight lines and independence of his buildings have brought him international attention.

The goal of advancing eco cities often remains confined to political or technological issues. This book establishes a focus on architectural and infrastructural design approaches to sustainable urban planning. Norwegian architecture has received a lot of international attention in recent years. The result is high urban density, which spells an enormous demand for the more efficient use of space and encourages verticalization in architecture. This publication outlines the current developments in South Korean architecture, urban development and landscape architecture by examining 32 projects in detail. An in-depth view of contemporary South Korean architecture is given by five essays that address topics such as the fusion of tradition and the modern, the re-defining of so-called “social spaces” and the country’s special topographical situation. The authors are both architects, trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Latin America has been an important place for architecture for many decades. Masters like Barragán, Dieste, Lina Bo Bardi, and Niemeyer pointed the way for architectural design all over the world, and they continue to do so today. Economic strengthening and the developments associated with it, such as population growth, rural flight, and the explosive growth of cities, pose enormous challenges for city planners in urban centers throughout the world. But clumsy “test-tube” urban plans like those developed for China – in part by German planners – have shown that different standards and rules apply in the non-European world than in Europe’s organically developed urban structures. Knox’ in-situ studies present 50 especially significant city districts from the whole of Europe in words and pictures. His field research focuses on typologically outstanding city districts that have developed a high degree of individuality. Cities are the symbiosis of diverse districts: the smaller units serve to provide an important identity function: business centers and amusement districts such as the City and the West End in London, technology and science quarters (Adlershof in Berlin), designer districts such as the Zona Tortona in Milan and the Fashion District in New York. Arten von Populus (Pappel), sind aufgrund ihrer aggressiven, oberflächennahen Wurzeln (Horizontalwurzelsystem), der Bildung von Wurzelausläufern und ihres brüchigen Holzes ungeeignet, während Sorten von Acer platanoides (Spitzahorn), ebenfalls ein Pioniergehölz, zumindest geeignet sind. Um die Auswahl geeigneter Straßenbaumarten zu optimieren, werden oftmals Empfehlungs- oder Negativlisten auf städtischer oder kommunaler Ebene erstellt. In Deutschland wird – basierend auf den Erfahrungen der kommunalen Grünflächenämter – eine Straßenbaumliste durch den Arbeitskreis der Grünflächenamtsleiterkonferenz (GALK) herausgegeben. > tab. 1.2.1 Dieser Arbeitskreis steht auch im Austausch mit Fachleuten aus den europäischen Nachbarländern. Straßenbäume sind balliert mit einer Stammhöhe von 220 bis 250 cm zu liefern. jedoch eine Fertigungszeit von vier Jahren oder mehr einzuplanen. Formgehölze werden typischerweise für formale Außenanlagen eingesetzt. Die Unterhaltungspflege ist sehr aufwendig. > abb. 1.2.4 Großbäume werden in der Regel nicht in der Baumschule gezogen, sondern als mehr oder weniger ausgewachsene Exemplare von ihrem langjährigen Standort entnommen und versetzt. Aufgrund ihres reifen oder unregelmäßigen, ausdrucksstarken Habitus sind sie bereits unmittelbar nach der Pflanzung sehr raumwirksam und prägend. Die Kosten für eine Verpflanzung sind abhängig von Art und Größe, dem vorherigen Standort und dem Transportweg. Sie können relativ gering, aber auch sehr hoch sein. Die Ausfallquote ist bedeutend höher als bei Baumschulware, da beim Verpflanzen eines Großbaums der größte Teil der Wurzeln verloren geht. Die notwendige Unterhaltspflege ist meist sehr aufwendig und kostspielig. Häufig benötigen solche Bäume permanente Verankerungen, da sich ihr Wurzelsystem nicht kräftig genug aufbaut. Da Großbäume aufgrund ihres Alters nicht mehr sehr anpassungsfähig sind, ist eine art- bzw. standortgerechte Verwendung umso wichtiger. Werden grundlegende Ansprüche der Bäume an Licht oder Bodenverhältnisse nicht berücksichtigt, stagniert das Wachstum der versetzten Großbäume, oder sie sterben allmählich ab. Obstbäume sind für die Verwendung im öffentlichen Raum ungeeignet. Da sie vergleichsweise anspruchsvoll in

Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. The designs of urban river landscapes must fulfill a broad range of requirements: flood control, open space design, and ecology are as a rule the three dominant themes, and they must often be reconciled within a very restricted space. The river must be understood as a process: governed by changing water levels, shifting seasons, erosion, and sedimentation, the river environment is not a static entity but constantly changing – the design must be flexible and take this into account. This book is the product of a multi-year study that subjected more than fifty Western European projects to a comparative analysis. The result is a systematic catalog of effective strategies and innovative design elements. First, designers and planners are given an overview of the broad and varied spectrum of design possibilities. The book’s process-oriented approach is especially helpful where the focus is on longterm, sustainable mea-sures. The publication consists of two linked volumes that enable the reader to consult the systematic catalog and the case study section side by side. Trees are ideal sources of shade; where they cannot be used, their function is taken over by tents, pergolas, and pavilions. Andrea Palladio is universally regarded as one of the most important architects of the Renaissance. He was the first “professional architect” and was strongly influenced by Greek and Roman architecture, particularly by Vitruvius. His treatise “Quattro libri dell’architettura” also earned him worldwide recognition. Palladio’s villas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This book documents and analyzes ten of Palladio’s eighteen surviving villas specifically in terms of their relationship with their natural surroundings; their influence on those surroundings is investigated as well. The selected villas constitute a representative cross section of Palladio’s wide-ranging output. The landscape formations of Veneto, where these villas are located, may be divided into three types: plains surrounded by mountains, arid plains, and marshland.

Landscape architecture can be a discipline of planning that creates everyday worlds just as architecture does or it can assert its position as an art form and produce extraordinary works that take on communicative tasks. Monika Gora’s oeuvre is based on nearly twenty years of work as a landscape architect and artist based in Malmö, Sweden, which has produced numerous works in Scandinavia and Central Europe, which have been awarded many prizes and been published internationally. Moving beyond the seriousness of classical landscape architecture, Gora’s work reveals a playful approach to the environment and proves that the built landscape need not be a deadly serious matter but rather is there for the senses: for astonishment, brooding, an aha or a laugh, somewhere between intellect and sensibility, beyond the materialism of garden and landscape architecture and far from the conceptualism of museum art. This is demonstrated, for example, by her amorphous light objects called “Jimmies”, which provide white or colored light for playgrounds, housing colonies, while also inviting people to sit or climb on them.
Kongjian Yu and his office Turenscape are beyond doubt the foremost landscape architecture firm in China today. The vast scale of China and its apparently boundless growth have enabled Yu to test many ideas that are still largely theories in the Western world. His work, increasingly valued and appreciated in Europe and North America, has attained an extremely high and elegant level in both conception and execution. Kongjian Yu is known for his ecological stance, often against the resistance of local authorities. His guiding design principles are the appreciation of the ordinary and a deep embracing of nature, even in its potentially destructive aspects, such as floods. Among his most acclaimed projects are Houtan Park for Shanghai Expo, the Red Ribbon Park in Qinhuangdao, and Shipyard Park in Zhongshan. This book explores Yu’s work in some ten essays by noted authors and extensively documents some 20 selected projects.

Infrastructure is currently a much discussed notion in the field of landscape architecture. It regards the entire urban and rural space as a network that calls for an integrated planning approach. Dealing with color is a complex subject : influenced by standards, fashions and trends, we derive our ideas and concepts from color theories, intuition and personal preferences. The color swatches and systems for describing color common today are based on purely quantitative principles and include well over 1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particular color? More than ten years ago, the color chemist Katrin Trautwein established a company for manufacturing fine paints, starting out from Le Corbusier’s color palette. Graphic designers love music. This is attested not least by the tremendous enthusiasm that readers of the typography magazine Slanted bring to its TypoLyrics column, in which designers interpret music in entirely new ways with the help of fonts. For this publication of the same name, celebrated graphic designers like Fons Hickmann as well as talented young designers from all over the world have taken song lyrics and used them as the inspiration for innovative font designs. The result is a collection of fascinating visuals – typographic images that present contemporary fonts a little bit differently. The extraordinary interplay of type design and music brings the fonts to life and practically sets them dancing. In contrast to classical pattern books and font fans, this volume provides a special, more emotional experience of typography and illustrates the great expressive potential of typefaces. On analogy with the traditional classification of fonts, the book is organized into eleven chapters, each of which treats a particular font family and song lyrics from a particular musical style, from classical to punk.
Lines are thoughts that can be drawn and are often more precise than words. Only ideas that can be drawn can be translated into a design. 1D, the first dimension , is thus the point of departure for the design process both in training and in professional practice. This publication focuses on the learning and function of drawing. Drawing assignments created for The Basel School of Design are commented on based on a conceptual system in the form of a “ network card”. On the one hand, this shows the quality of the drawings; on the other hand, it provides the vocabulary nec essary to communicate about the complex process of drawing – with the goal of ever better results. An introductory essay addresses drawing as a process of perception and realization. The importance of the focus on pivotal texts for the design research cannot be overstated. The focus of this study is a comparative analysis of the use of desks. Desks in insurance companies, banks, administrative authorities, call centers, and design studios in twelve countries on all continents were studied. This publication presents the results in the form of extensive visual material, empirical analyses, and critical essays.
