ment. The interior and exterior detailing also follows the same thinking and can seem almost unremarkable at first glance. Even in his early projects, Frank created an architecture that contains contradictions and tensions, spatial complexity and special qualities. At the same time, the architecture often approaches the unassuming and normal and discreetly remains in the background. If one has visited one of the villas in Falsterbo or in Vienna as an architect and experienced the atmosphere in them, this is a constantly recurring impression. There is also something compelling and challenging in his combination of pure luxury—in the form of expensive materials, exotic varieties of wood, and craftsmanship—and an interest in everyday life with its extremes, sentimentality, and poor taste. In “Accidentism,” Josef Frank writes that “we should design our surroundings as if they originated by chance.”11 What Frank proposes is not arbitrariness or random architecture, but an intellectual method that allows the architect to be inclusive, pragmatic, complex, humorous, and elegant, all at the same time. Josef Frank’s architecture—to quote Tafuri—contains time bombs that continue to explode, challenge, and inspire to this day.
