Living for the Elderly Second and Revised Edition
A DESIGN MANUAL
Innovative design seeks to overcome traditional boundaries between the housing and the care facilities markets and also between individual, collective and assisted ways of living – in favour of a holistic trend toward integrated forms of living. The Design Manual Living for the Elderly examines the principles and processes of planning and designing in more than 15 expert contributions, covering aspects ranging from sustainability to the design of interiors and outdoor spaces. The case study section details around 40 international projects that illustrate a variety of typological approaches and exemplary design solutions for a wide range of tasks: multi-generational living, assisted living and serviced apartments, concepts for specific user groups and for people with dementia as well as homes for the elderly and nursing homes. The second edition includes an additional essay on participatory planning and design and new examples of housing in mixed-use neighbourhoods.

Quality living in old age is one of the most important topics of our time. Architects and builders can contribute by developing innovative living concepts, intelligent solutions for barrier-free spaces and progressive care environments for people with physical or mental impairments.
