Stuart Brown grew up in Fife with good cooks and bakers in the family. He has worked as a teacher, radio journalist and in the not-for-profit sector. The author of many articles, Mma Ramotswe’s Cookbook is his first book. Stuart lives in Edinburgh and works with GALVmed (Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines) whose African office is in Gaborone, Botswana. Millions of people, many of whom are in sub-Saharan Africa, depend on livestock for food, education and the dignity of self-determination. GALVmed is working with partners to upscale existing livestock vaccines and pioneer the development of new ones to make them affordable and accessible to the people who need them most. Royalties from the sales of this book will go to good causes in Botswana.

Sipping Redbush tea and stirring the rich and fragrant stew that would make a fine meal for Mr J.L.B. Matekoni and the children, Mma Ramotswe, Botswana’s foremost lady detective, reflected upon how lucky she was to live in such a beautiful country. Woodsmoke wafted through the open doorway, transporting Precious Ramotswe back to Mochudi and childhood with her dear daddy, the late Obed Ramotswe. Up and down the country, fires would be lit under great cast-iron pots, as women, to whom much of the work seemed to fall, conjured up delicious traditional dishes. Flecks of Mopane wood ash would mix with the tang of acacia, spiralling into the vast expanse of emptiness, the Bush, where her heart lay and the wealth of wildlife drew visitors to share in the beauty of Botswana. There would be comforting mealie meal, delicious ripe pumpkin, village chicken so chewy and flavoursome and, when it could be afforded, some of Botswana’s delicious beef. How fortunate, also, she reflected, tasting the stew that was thickening nicely, to be a traditionally built lady, at ease in one’s own skin, free to enjoy home-made biscuits with Mma Makutsi or some of the persuasive fruitcake of the indomitable Matron of the Orphan Farm, Mma Potokwani.
