Autumn And winter 2012 13
Welcome Welcome to our Autumn and Winter season for 2012. We’re well into our second year offsite and, whilst work continues on The REP’s redevelopment alongside the Library of Birmingham, we have another thrilling season of plays for you.
See more, share more, save more! Our time ‘on the road’ has presented us with many opportunities to respond creatively within a variety of spaces, and to present a mix of theatrical experiences in traditional and unconventional locations. For autumn we’ll be returning to familiar venues, such as The Old Rep and The Crescent Theatre, and will be presenting site-specific work in caravans, an Territorial Army Centre and even a Chinese restaurant. This season we have a wide range of celebrated partners and leading touring companies joining us to present exciting new work and the latest and greatest productions from across the UK. We welcome legendary theatre director Max StaffordClark and his company Out of Joint, while groundbreaking company, Pilot Theatre, will be presenting a new gritty adaptation by BAFTA awardwinning playwright Roy Williams. We also bring you Ireland’s national theatre company, The Abbey Theatre, with the UK premiere of a new version of a well renowned production, and as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, a brand new play from internationally acclaimed director Calixto Bieito. For Christmas we have a beautiful stage adaptation of a treasured family classic by Alan Bennett. With a thrilling mix of drama inspired by compelling historical stories, food, conflict, incarceration, Shakespeare, and classic family entertainment, autumn with The REP offers variety in abundance. New this season For those who work in education, we’ve added information to the pages in this brochure indicating where we offer associated workshops, resource packs and discounts that support teachers and their students. Thank you for your valued support over the years. We hope you continue to find us while we’re out and about this autumn and that you stay in touch throughout our 100th Birthday and home coming year in 2013. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you over the coming months. Regards All at The REP

THE As we look to the future of The REP, our forthcoming centenary and return home, our REPair appeal very much continues, raising vital funds to make necessary improvements to The REP to make it the best it can be.
Many people have already donated to this appeal and helped us on the way towards reaching our various targets. We would like to say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you and invite others to show their support. So far our REPair appeal has raised over £50,000 which will go towards an air cooling system for our two auditoria, the Main House and The Door. We are also very close to reaching our target of £40,000 to purchase a new radio system which will improve our facilities for customers who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing. A new radio system will allow superior audio description and hearing assistance facilities across our auditoria helping many more people to experience and enjoy the thrill of live theatre.
Play your part in our Centenary Year 2013 is going to be a year of celebrations for The REP with both our 100th birthday in February and our reopening in September. Why not celebrate with us by joining our Centenary Club and at the same time support our REPair appeal? For a donation of £100 you can become a member of the Centenary Club and receive the following benefits: An exclusive invitation to our reopening ceremony in 2013 A signed copy of our Centenary Souvenir programme Priority booking for the reopening season Your name or dedication on the Centenary Club roll in our new foyer and on our website Each £100 donation will go towards the REPair appeal.

Simply text BREP13 to 70070 followed by the amount you’d like to donate up to a maximum of £10. All the money you donate goes to The REP, and your network provider does not charge you for the text you send to make the donation. Donate at a ‘Pledge Night’ – we’ll be running these throughout the forthcoming season and will have bucket collections at some venues. You can also play your part by joining one of our membership schemes opposite. Text Donations You can donate to our REPair appeal by text! All you need to do is text BREP13 to 70070 and then the amount you would like to give (£1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10). Forests
Based on texts by William Shakespeare “ Let the forest judge” – A new Shakesperian odyssey imagined by one of Europe’s most prominent theatre directors, Calixto Bieito. Commissioned as part of the World Shakespeare Festival 2012, Forests uses original verse from Shakespeare’s forest and heath scenes to take audiences on an odyssey from the calmness of paradise to the uncertainties of purgatory and finally into the flames of hell. Starting in As You Like It’s Forest of Arden, stopping off in the moving trees of Macbeth’s Birnam Woods and finishing in the bare wilderness of King Lear’s cliffs of Dover, this new production will be a spellbinding, vivid and imaginative theatrical journey. Bieito is no stranger to UK audiences having previously directed Hamlet and Celestina for The REP and Edinburgh International Festival and also Macbeth at the Barbican. His passionate and radical interpretations of classics have stimulated controversy and earned him critical acclaim.

Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker based on The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally Australia, 1789. A boat full of murderers, thieves and marine officers arrives on a distant shore. There, an ambitious young lieutenant, Ralph Clark, is set the task of directing a cast of convicts in the Restoration comedy ‘The Recruiting Officer’ to celebrate the King’s birthday. But with a dispirited cast, just two copies of the script, suspicion from his fellow officers, a leading lady facing the gallows, and Ralph’s uncontrollable passion for one of the convict players, Australia’s first theatre production is in trouble from the start. Max Stafford-Clark directed the world premiere of Our Country’s Good at the Royal Court Theatre in 1988. It transferred to the West End and Broadway. This new production is touring prior to a run at London’s new St James Theatre.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s history is rich, varied and significant not only to theatre-lovers but to academics and the theatre industry worldwide. Records of the company’s history are currently held in two archives at Birmingham Central Library and these heritage materials tell a remarkable story. As we celebrate one hundred years of theatre-making we will be bringing this story to life through our centenary project, REP100. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, REP100 will tell the story of the writers, directors, designers, actors, photographers, wardrobe, set-builders, stage crew, administrators and critics who have made The REP what it is today. REP100 will also tell the story of our audiences and our city, illustrating how theatre touches individuals whilst also reflecting a point in time and a view of the world. At the centre of REP100 will be a new online digital archive, where archive materials will be accessible to anyone with an interest in our heritage. REP100 is also very much about bringing our heritage to life and so, as part of the new digital archive, we will also be recording reminiscences from audiences to create a new archive of oral histories. There will also be exhibitions, an audio tour of the Old REP and The REP, a range of heritage activity days and much more. To find out more visit Birminghamrep.co.uk/REP100
12
We really need you to help us tell our story. You can get involved and learn new skills through the following volunteering activities: Archiving & Cataloguing – using The REP’s archive Heritage interpretation – to lead backstage tours Curation & exhibiting – curating The REP’s centenary exhibitions Oral History – recording and transcribing people’s memories we’re not expecting you every day, every week; but we do ask that you be keen and committed! Training in each area will be provided and reasonable travel costs covered. If you are interested and want to know more – please register at birminghamrep.co.uk/REP100 or contact REP100VOLS@birmingham-rep.co.uk or call 0121 245 2000 identifying which area of the project interests you most.

The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner by Alan Sillitoe A long distance race. Real time. Follow one runner, alone with his thoughts.

Colin is defiant. A young rebel, inhabiting the no-man’s land of detention centres and young offenders’ institutes, as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh frost bitten earth.
Director Marcus Romer
Set in 2012, the play exposes the beating heart of a nation, still broken and still divided across class lines. Using 3D visuals incorporated into an exciting design, we follow Colin’s race, unpicking his thoughts and becoming part of his journey. Adapted by BAFTA winning and Olivier Award nominated playwright Roy Williams OBE (Sucker Punch, Fallout, Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads), this gritty adaptation of Alan Sillitoe’s classic text hits the ground running; unlocking the biting realism of the original book while placing the drama firmly in a contemporary frame. by Sean O’Casey Set in a tenement house, against the backdrop of the Easter Rising in 1916, The Plough And The Stars is both an intimate play about the lives of ordinary people and an epic play about ideals and the birth of a nation. Amidst the tumult of political upheaval, Jack and Nora Clitheroe are ‘like two turtle doves always billing and cooing’, much to the ridicule of their bustling neighbours. But when Ireland calls, Jack must choose between love for his wife and duty to his country. Heartbreaking, disturbing and very funny, The Plough and The Stars is a historic play that every generation needs to see. Director Wayne Jordan brings the fresh perspective of a new generation to this iconic play.

“You can eat an apple from Chernobyl, but…” We take food for granted; we diet, overindulge, grab it on the go, but rarely do we delve into its stories. From famine to hunger strike, persecution to celebration, anorexia to obesity, food and eating has an important place in historical events, the present news and our own emotional memories. This year a team of researchers, writers, actors and designers, The REP, and Black Country Touring will cook up a new piece of drama based on personal accounts of what, when and how we eat and why it matters. We don’t know where the stories will take us, but if you saw Behna (Sisters) (2010 with Kali Theatre) or The Cornershop (2009) you’ll know to expect a unique, intimate and tasty theatre experience. Have you had an eating experience that meant more than the food you ate? Has food played a particularly important part in your life? Wounded By Jenny Stephens 1917: wounded soldiers injured in the Great War are nursed in a Birmingham hospital. How times have changed and 94 years on, the injured soldier being treated in the same military hospital is Kate Mulligan, a Combat Medical Technician. Wracked with guilt that she caused her own injuries and the life threatening injuries of another soldier who tried to save her, Kate begins to experience strange goings on. Perhaps it’s the shock or maybe, just maybe Kate really can see and hear Private Alfred Seddon. The two soldiers, a century apart, remember and revisit their experiences, allowing them to explore their traumas and help each other recover. Emotional, heartfelt and intriguing, Wounded is a ghostly story, of two people coping with the aftermath of trauma. This site-specific new play will be performed at the Territorial Army Field Hospital in Kings Heath, Birmingham, providing audiences with an unbelievably authentic experience of war time care and history like no other theatrical experience. Wounded is supported by the Wellcome Trust Arts Awards Engaging Science grant.

By Alex Higlett Adapted by Paul McEneaney Egg is all about magic and music and … an egg. The delightful story unfolds on a tiny, rustic set, exquisitely constructed out of twigs, feathers and shell. Join these madcap birds on an adventure of a lifetime as they grapple with growing up and giving in to their natural instincts to take flight. And then of course they meet an egg!
All performances take place at The Library Theatre.

Adapted by Carol Ann Duffy and dramatised by Tim Supple
It’s time for bed in the wild wild west. But Cowboy Baby ain’t tired. No sirree! There’s still loads of time to play with Texas Ted, Denver Dog and Hank the Horse. If only Cowboy Baby can find ‘em, before Sheriff Pa finds him first!
In the dead of night, the moon is hiding behind a cloud, and deep in the dark, dark forest two children are lost, scared and hungry...
A gold award winner of the Smarties Children’s Book Prize, Cowboy Baby is not only a terrific western yarn for children, but also a beautiful story about love and friendship. So expect twirlin’ lassos, rattlin’ rattlesnakes, howlin’ coyotes and prickly cacti, with plenty of fun, adventure, songs and even puppetry around the old campfire. Yes sirree!
How are we ever going to find our way out of this enormous forest? A young girl, exhausted with work and deprived of a bed, lies down in the dirty ashes. Her stepsisters with hearts as ugly as thorns snigger at her. Shake your leaves and branches, little tree, Shower gold and silver down on me.
Sue Heap’s wonderfully original and delightful story for children has now been adapted for the stage as the inaugural production for Catfoot, a new touring company based in rural Nottinghamshire. More details at www.catfoot.co.uk
The deliciously scary and thrillingly dramatic stories of the Brothers Grimm are brought to life in an imaginative new production by internationally acclaimed Theatr Iolo.
“A really lovely play for families ...highly recommended” Lowdham Book Festival PLUS stay behind after the show for our special Cowboy Baby workshop ... suitable for all cowboys and cowgirls and their older ranch-hands!
