Welcome to our spring/summer season 2015

coincide with the run up to the election. This scrupulously researched and fiercely funny play from the writer of Sherlock and Doctor Who spotlights the relationship between politicians and the press. In The DOOR we give voice to a breadth of brilliant characters, from The REP’s Olivier-nominated Associate Artist, Caroline Horton’s playful and poignant Penelope RETOLD, the story of a lonely military wife to The Honey Man, a powerful tale of a West Indian recluse from Tyrone Huggins.

The struggle to find a voice is a running theme in the season and is particularly relevant to two plays in The HOUSE: the much loved The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice, the heart-warming story of a shy but hugely talented singer as she is thrust into the limelight and The King’s Speech, which dramatises the uplifting true story of King George VI’s struggle to overcome a paralysing speech impediment. With the formidable pairing of Raymond Coulthard and Jason Donovan in the leading roles of The King’s Speech, we are blessed again with an extraordinary array of the best acting talent in the country. This includes James Dreyfus who returns to The REP as Elwood P Dowd, the man whose best friend is a 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit, in Mary Chase’s hugely popular tale Harvey. Among the many new plays The REP is presenting this season, we are proud to be able to offer you six world premières. In The Studio, our commission of Steve Thompson’s Feed The Beast narrates the critical first 100 days in power for a new prime minister and is programmed to

We also welcome The Pyramid Texts, a haunting look at a boxer in his twilight years played by the brilliant James Cosmo. We’re particularly delighted to be producing Steven Camden’s (aka Polarbear’s) first ever stage play Back Down, which captures the teenage life of three young men in a tender coming-of-age story with all his characteristic linguistic brio. Find out more about the playwrights, their work and the journey from page to stage by attending our behind the scenes talks – see page 32 for more information. In addition to our own shows, we’re delighted to welcome a host of inspiring visiting companies, amongst them the inventive company Kneehigh’s adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s chilling novel Rebecca and, to celebrate the great playwright, Arthur Miller’s centenary, the wonderful Talawa’s production of the classic All My Sons. Please join us in making this a memorable season.

A SUMMER IN THE SOUTH

Readings from the work of Colette adapted by Richard Edmonds Performed by Siân Phillips and Robert Powell

16 to 21 february Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Judy Owen Ltd present

the honey man By Tyrone Huggins

A Summer In The South is a tribute to Colette, one of France’s greatest writers. Her work is brilliantly brought to life by Siân Phillips and Robert Powell.

Honey Man is an ageing West Indian recluse, trying to save his dying bees in a derelict cottage on the edge of rural England.

Her most famous work was Gigi but this evening offers many more fascinating episodes set against the Paris of la belle époque and World War I.

Into his world bursts a sixteen-year-old girl called Misty. His stormy encounter with this fiery, weed-smoking heir to the nearby manor house leads to an unlikely friendship, and the discovery of a secret which connects their past, present and destiny in ways they could never have imagined.

You hear about an assortment of astonishing characters including a spider who drinks hot chocolate with Colette’s mother, Alain with his strange affection for his cat Saha, Lina the grand horizontale and Missy with her poodle-hair moustache. Dark and disturbing stories mix with colourful and amusing ones, creating a haunting mosaic of prose and dramatised passages. Devised & directed by Richard Edmonds

April 2002. Spring in Bethlehem. A group of armed men seek sanctuary in one of the world’s holiest sites, the Church of Nativity, as the Israeli army closes in. The siege lasts for 39 days, paralysing the centre of Bethlehem. While the world is watching, the fighters are faced with the question of whether to struggle to the end or to surrender. Meera Syal’s much-loved novel bursts on to the stage for the very first time.

Director Roxana Silbert

“ I am so thrilled that Anita And Me is being developed and premiered at The REP” Meera Syal

The Siege is created by world-renowned The Freedom Theatre from Jenin Refugee Camp in Palestine who are on their first tour of the UK.

This poignant coming-of-age tale follows Meena, a young girl growing up in the only Punjabi family in a 1970s Black Country mining village. Meena spends her days happily getting into scrapes with the other local children until one day the impossibly cool Anita enters her life. Suddenly Meena knows exactly who she wants to be, but is Anita all that she seems? Soon Meena’s world is turned upside down as she is caught between two very different cultures. Anita And Me paints a comic, poignant, compassionate and colourful portrait of village life in the era of flares, power cuts, glam rock, decimalisation and Ted Heath. British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreted & Captioned Performances (CAP)

We offer BSL Interpreted and Captioned performances on many of our productions. (During a captioned performance the actors’ words appear as visible text on screens on or near the stage at the same time as they are spoken.) For these performances specific seats with a clear view of the signer are reserved, so please specify that you are booking for the BSL performance when you contact our box office, The BOX.

Audio Described Performances (Audio)

This service gives you a description of the action on stage, interspersed between actors’ dialogue. You need to pre-book and collect your headset through The BOX for a returnable deposit. We also offer Touch Tours before Audio Described performances, giving sight impaired patrons an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the set and costumes before the show. These tours are free of charge but advanced booking is essential.
