DC5 Frozen & Circles DC6 Refugee Boy & Private Peaceful

I’m delighted to be launching our 2014 season by welcoming David Essex to The REP in the European premiere of The Dishwashers, a compelling dark comedy which had great reviews on Broadway. The first half of the season focuses on the great German poet and playwright, Bertolt Brecht, with our Epic Encounters festival headlined by an anarchic new production of The Threepenny Opera and a revival of the Royal Shakespeare Company production of A Life Of Galileo, starring one of the country’s finest actors, Ian McDiarmid in the role of one of the world’s greatest scientists. There will also be films, poems, music and events inspired by Brecht and the themes of money and power that resonate throughout the season.

Alongside the classics, we’re producing five world premieres. Among them, Khandan (Family), by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, a warm, moving family drama about a man striving for a better life for his extended family against all the odds. Circles, from brilliant young playwright, Rachel De-lahay is set on the Number 11 bus, and Never Try This At Home, directed by Paul Hunter inspired by his childhood appearance on Tiswas. 2014 is of course the centenary of World War I and we begin our four-year programme reflecting on that centenary with three very different shows about war: War Horse author Michael Morpugo’s Private Peaceful, an adaptation of the classic novel Catch-22, and a brand-new cycle of songs, War Correspondents from the extraordinary Helen Chadwick. As we launch the second year of The REP Foundry, our development programme for emerging artists, we’re producing two plays by our recent graduates and you can see all of the work by our emerging artists at a discounted rate by purchasing a Foundryphile Pass. We’ve also increased our popular programme, First Stages, plays written especially to introduce young children and their families to the theatre, and Charlie and Lola are also back. I look forward to welcoming you to our new season.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre in association with Lee Dean and Charles Diamond presents the UK premiere of

31 January to 15 February A delicious play about the Zen of dishwashing! Emmett used to be a high flyer in the City until the financial crisis abruptly changed his life. He was used to dining upstairs amongst the glitterati but today he’s back with a new career – as a dishwasher. Alongside his new colleagues, dominant self-appointed leader, Dressler, who’s been happily scraping and scrubbing for over 30 years, and the decrepit Moss who’s about ready for retirement, Emmett attacks the endless supply of crockery that descends from above. In this world of soapsuds and despair, playwright Morris Panych brings wit and humour to their quest for existential meaning. David Essex returns to the stage, in the role of Dressler, having enjoyed a remarkable career in theatre, films, television, and music.

Moon On A Rainbow Shawl

FROZEN

By Errol John

By Bryony Lavery

One sunny evening, ten-year-old Rhona goes missing. Her mother, Nancy, retreats into a state of frozen hope. Agnetha, an American criminal psychologist, comes to England to research a thesis. Then there’s mysterious loner Ralph who’s looking for some distraction. Drawn together by horrific circumstances, the lives of these three characters slowly intersect as they embark upon a long, dark journey. First performed in 1998 at The REP, Frozen won the TMA Best New Play Award and won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. This new production brings a new dimensionto the play by being performed in both British Sign Language and spoken English.

Talawa Theatre Company and the National Theatre take Errol John’s ‘bruising, brilliantly witty play’ (Time Out) on tour after its critically acclaimed run in London in 2012. In Port of Spain, Trinidad, the snatches of calypso music, hymn tunes and drums are interrupted by the raucous celebrations of troops returning from war. Here, neighbours drink, bawl, make love, look out for each other and crave a better life. But Ephraim is no dreamer and nothing, not even the seductive Rosa, is going to stop him escaping his dead-end job for a fresh start in England. Universally praised by critics and audiences alike, the original creative team have reunited to present John’s mesmerising and heart-warming masterpiece once more.

Based on the characters created by Lauren Child Adapted by Jonathan Lloyd

Phones come to life with the buzz of a new message, a new email, a Facebook update. A single photo… When a naked photo of Scarlett goes viral and she becomes the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons, Scarlett remains silent. This time-shifting play explores the pressures surrounding young people today and in the past and the complex and contradictory choices they make in expressing themselves.

Girls Like That By Evan Placey 32

Performed by our youth theatre, The Young REP. First commissioned by Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Plymouth Theatre Royal and West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Director Daniel Tyler

Charlie and Lola are completely excited to be back on stage with their Extremely New Play – and this time they’re bringing along Sizzles the Dog! Playful, funny and full of surprises, this extremely new play about friendship and adventures is a treat for everyone. This magical mix of puppets, live action & music is based on the much loved books by Lauren Child and the ever popular BBC series.

In the wake of a family trauma, a vicious rumour starts circulating around the school. Mike’s teacher is worried about the damage it may cause him. Mike’s father thinks the damage is already done. This world premiere from The Foundry’s Joe White explores the difficulties in solving our children’s problems when we don’t have the solutions, and the lengths we go to make each other proud.
