NEW YEAR NEW SHOWS NEW LOOK 2022
WELCOME BACK
internationally; so we want to think big – bringing the very best talent and the most exciting shows to Birmingham. Watch this space. Birmingham is on the move: the world’s most important, super-diverse city, one of the youngest in Europe, has the Commonwealth Games in its sights, and The Rep will be right here at the heart of that creative and night-time buzz…
THIS FEELS LIKE A BEGINNING… We were appointed back in 2019, but this season is our first as custodians of this magnificent theatre. The last two years has seen The Rep closed much of the time – now, we’re delighted to rekindle its pioneering spirit, which has endured for over 100 years. Above all, we want to thank past and present staff – the incredible team who have worked so hard to keep the theatre alive and re-open it. We are very grateful to the GBSLEP, Birmingham City Council and all the funders and individual donors who have helped us re-develop our magnificent new foyers and public spaces as we celebrate 50 years here on Centenary Square.
NEW YEAR NEW SHOWS NEW LOOK
We’re so excited by those who have already joined us on our journey. From Baroness Floella Benjamin to Tom Hiddleston, from Sky Studios to Meera Syal, from the BBC to Dame Julie Walters, from Adrian Lester to Alison Jackson, and from BRB to the National Theatre. This place has always been a beacon for talent, and we hope once again to make it a national centre for creativity and excellence. The Rep is important not just in the city, but nationally and
And Commonwealth – whatever it means to you – is at the centre of our programme in 2022, as we complete this Anniversary year for the theatre. Through our Commonwealth Season we celebrate and interrogate the experience of our shared history, and the enrichment of our culture through migration, difference, and exchange. As the City’s world-class producing theatre we have been enormously grateful for the support of Birmingham 2022 Festival, and our core funder Arts Council England. Their support has enabled us this year to continue to craft every type of theatrical presentation right here in the City. You can grow a career in our theatre, from writing to set building or painting; marketing to theatre management and administration. But if you just want to come and see a show, well, that’s really what we’re here for... Because it’s you, the audience, that really make a theatre – without you a performance is just a rehearsal. Live performance is a unique shared experience, different every night, and we invite you to experience it with us. We promise, it’ll be worth it.

EAST IS EAST
The Rep has a team of three in-house directors and we work together to bring the most exciting shows and very best talent to Birmingham. Last September, I stood on stage for the first preview of East is East and welcomed a sold-out audience back to The Rep for the first time since the pandemic closed us 18 months earlier. That night also marked the beginning of the 50th Anniversary Season of The Rep on Centenary Square. Since then, every show at The Rep has had five-star reviews, and, more importantly, rave audience responses. I couldn’t have asked for a better launch of the renewed Rep, with our focus on artistically ambitious popular theatre. As we extend our 50th celebrations into this Commonwealth year, I look forward to welcoming you to our Commonwealth Season and two Birmingham 2022 Festival productions plus further World Premieres, amazing talent, and ‘Rep Original’ productions across our three auditoria. SEAN FOLEY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR This year will see the re-launch of The Door. I’m excited to be re-thinking The Rep’s most intimate theatre as a space dedicated to local, national and international artists to develop their work, and for those yet to break into the industry to develop their talent. It’s a theatre where audiences can get up close and personal with the new, the experimental and the extraordinary, and I can’t wait to direct GrimeBoy by Casey Bailey there this Spring. MADELEINE KLUDJE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
As a born and bred Brummie, I was delighted when Sean asked me to become an Associate Director. 2022 is a huge year for the City, and I’m thrilled to be combining my role here with being Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. I will be back at The Rep directing Tartuffe later this year – a hilarious classic comedy reimagined in Birmingham. IQBAL KHAN ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Much loved by children and families, Coming to England tells Floella’s own story of emigrating to England as a child. Aged just 10, she and her siblings left Trinidad and sailed alone to join their parents. But Floella’s excitement for her new life in England is short-lived, with her family subjected to racism and intolerance in 1960s’ London. Guided by her mother, and working twice as hard as her classmates, Coming to England tells the story of how a young Floella overcame adversity and grew to become Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham.

WHAT’S ON AT THE REP
Everybody has dreams, and my dream has always been easy to say, and nearly impossible to achieve. I want to be the biggest Grime MC in the country. I know what it takes: shell down raves, spin the opposition and never take my foot off the pedal. Every environment is more moody than the last, but every opportunity to shine has to be taken. I’m built for this, but there’s always more in this life. What happens when your biggest rival becomes your best friend? How do you prepare for a battle that doesn’t involve the mic and the decks? GrimeBoy is the unmissable new play from Casey Bailey, the Birmingham Poet Laureate and winner of the Greater Birmingham Future Face of Arts and Culture 2020. Part gig and part theatre, it is directed by The Rep’s Associate Director Madeleine Kludje with set design by Ebrahim Nazier.

WOULD YOU BET AGAINST US? RIOT ACT
LAVA
THU 12 MAY AT 8PM
FRI 13 & SAT 14 MAY AT 8PM
A wild ride through six decades of queer history.
Boy meets girl. Boy can’t talk to girl.
Riot Act is a solo verbatim show, created entirely, word for word, out of interviews with three key-players in the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement: Michael Anthony Nozzi, a survivor of the Stonewall Riots; Lavinia Co-op, an alternative drag artist and Paul Burston, London AIDS activist. Provocative, tender, truthful, funny, political and personal, Riot Act is a celebration of queer activism across the decades, pulling no punches, hilarious and inspiring. It’s a riot!
And a small asteroid has hit the capital city. As London adjusts to life after an unthinkable disaster, in a small town far away, a young man called Vin finds he can no longer speak. Is it shock? Grief? Or something else? From award-winning playwright James Fritz (Four Minutes Twelve Seconds, Parliament Square, Ross & Rachel), Lava is a play for the moment: a funny, tender and moving story about friendship and reconnection in the aftermath of catastrophe. CREATIVE LEARNING
TALENT DEVELOPMENT
GET INVOLVED AT THE REP We believe that theatre is for everyone and that all children and young people should have access to creative experiences. Each year, our Creative Learning team work with more than 25,000 young people – nurturing creativity, adding spark to school curriculums and giving young people the chance to perform on a professional stage. Young Rep is our youth theatre for ages 7 to 25. They meet each week during term-time developing their skills to become the theatre makers of the future. Do you know a young person aged 7 to 14 who could join our Junior or Intermediate groups? Limited spaces are still available! Our Education team have developed long-term relationships with schools and colleges across the West Midlands to help teachers embed drama and performance into their classrooms. Young people at Sandwell & Cadbury Colleges have recently experienced life behind the scenes, observing how we rise to the technical challenges in our workshops, and discovering more about an actor’s life. For more information on all our work with children, young people and how your school or college could get involved, visit www.birmingham-rep.co.uk
The amazing sessions have enhanced the concentration, listening skills and communication of our children and have supported our additional needs children to participate. TINY STEPS NURSERY
Working with the Rep has given our students some fantastic experience within the industry. It has been exciting to see the students work as professionals. MITCH MILLER CADBURY COLLEGE

TALENT DEVELOPMENT We’re here to help you develop your talent, whatever that is. All opportunities for talent development will be shared on our website, so keep your eyes peeled for more details on these programmes: FOUNDRY The Rep’s Foundry scheme is where new creative talent is forged. For nearly 10 years, diverse voices have found their way into the industry via this unique Birmingham stepping-stone opening up opportunities with Leeds Playhouse, the RSC, Bristol Old Vic and many more. This year a new cohort of artists will work directly on community projects with local participants. We’re particularly keen to hear from D/deaf and disabled artists to join Foundry 22 and create something extraordinary with our community partners. Foundry has been made possible with funding from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and support from our close partners at Ramps on the Moon.
SKY COMEDY REP In 2021, Sky Studios and The Rep teamed up to develop the careers of new comedy writers. With Dame Julie Walters as patron and hands-on support from mentors including Meera Syal, Guz Khan and Holly Walsh, this unique project showcased never-before-seen work in an inaugural festival Sky Comedy Rep Festival at the Rep in March 2022. Sky Studios and The Rep have a long term commitment to providing opportunities to help launch new comedy-writing careers right here in Birmingham. Look out for details on how to apply to be in the next cohort of writers, coming soon. REP WRITE An introduction to playwriting course designed to teach the basics to any budding writer. REP POETIC THEATRE MAKERS A scheme designed to give poets the opportunity to explore their craft through playwriting, helping to develop great poet playwrights. MASTERCLASSES A range of masterclasses and workshops with industry professionals sharing their knowledge and skills in different areas of the theatre industry.

YOU CAN HELP. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Although we receive grants from Arts Council England and Birmingham City Council, each year we need to generate 80% of all our income. We do this through ticket sales, hospitality and event hire, but it’s not enough. Therefore as a charity, we fundraise to create world-class theatre right here in Birmingham, and to support inspiring projects in education and talent development.
Our work delivers results where it’s needed most across Birmingham’s diverse neighbourhoods, in schools and colleges (where the arts are in decline) and for vulnerable adults. Our creative teams support new writers and young actors, and our apprenticeships prepare the next generation of technicians and administrators. We currently work with 80 community partners, 25 partner schools and 15 youth theatre groups. We want to do more. Thank you.
By making a donation or joining one of our supporter schemes, you help sustain and expand this important work. Scan the QR code, or visit birmingham-rep.co.uk/support-us to find out more.

Our Audio Described Performances offer a live description of what’s happening on stage in addition to what the actors are saying. This can be done using headphones that you can borrow from The Rep, or through the Mobile Connect app. Relaxed performances are designed to welcome people with a learning disability or sensory and communication conditions, or anyone that would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement and some small changes made to the light and sound effects.
