Director’s Note Immaculate was originally written for a smallscale production on the Edinburgh Fringe, where minimalism reigns. Our show has been produced under the restrictions of a COVID protocol, but we see this challenge as an opportunity. Our technical students are learning many skills by producing a very complex production in the Old Rep, with the additional learning process of preparing and filming a high quality live-streaming event. The acting students have learned how to work in a large professional theatre venue, exploiting the two metre distancing requirement to present
a performance at an epic scale. They have also enjoyed an occasional excursion into the television world occupied by Fleabag and Miranda. As is usual with my ambitious productions here, none of this would have been possible without the complete dedication of the highly skilled professionals who run the Technical Theatre Course at the Conservatoire, and the collaboration of Mark Pritchard and David Tinson. As ever, I admire them, and remain in their debt. Immaculate is licensed bt Nick Hern Books.
John Adams John has directed productions at all three incarnations of this fine Drama School - the BSSD, the BSA and now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Favourite productions for BSA include Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Shoreditch Madonna, Terry Johnson’s Piano/Forte, and Nicholas Nickleby. He was co-founder, with the writer David
Pownall, of Paines Plough, Britain’s leading independent new writing company. He has been Artistic Director of three regional theatres, the Octagon Bolton, the Birmingham Rep, and the Haymarket Basingstoke. He has also taught in many of our major drama schools.
