Welcome Welcome to our Spring Concert Diary. Whenever it’s time for me to write my ‘welcome note’ for our concert diaries, I am amazed by the breadth and diversity of the music and performers that we will be offering during the months ahead. This spring diary is no different. In addition to our roster of distinguished visitors – which counts Louis Lortie, Jennifer Pike and Nobuko Imai amongst their number – you can hear music and musicians from across the spectrum and Birmingham Conservatoire-related concerts all over the city. During the absence of our main concert hall we have been enjoying our performances in venues ranging from Selfridges to Symphony Hall. We have learned a lot and we look forward to continuing our musical activities well beyond the new Conservatoire’s walls. Regular readers will know that I dislike singling out individual performances but – as they always insist that I must! – please take on board a rare performance of Frederich Gulda’s wacky Concerto for Cello and Wind (20 Jan) and the Birmingham Conservatoire Ellington Orchestra’s inaugural concert (3 Feb). Oliver Heath violin Cerys Jones violin Gary Pomeroy viola Christopher Murray cello Beethoven Quartet in D, Op.18 No.3 Dvořák Quartet in G, Op.106 The dynamic and charismatic Heath Quartet are fast earning a reputation as one of the most exciting British chamber ensembles of the moment. In May 2013 they became the first ensemble in 15 years to win the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award. Formed in 2002 at the Royal Northern College of Music they were selected for representation by YCAT, were awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Special Ensemble Scholarship and in 2012 won Ensemble Prize at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. They are now an Ensemble-in-Residence here at Birmingham Conservatoire.

In this presentation, Professor Tony Whyton explores the themes and interim findings of the JPI-Heritage Plus project Cultural Heritage and Improvised Music in European Festivals (CHIME). CHIME explores the uses and re-uses of different types of heritage through the study of jazz and improvised music festivals, and examines how changing relationships between music, festivals and cultural heritage sites renegotiate established understandings and uses of heritage. The research views heritage sites as discursive entities that acquire value and meaning through interactions within different social groups and cultural contexts. When jazz festivals enter these places, they can help free us from unitary or reified notions of heritage, encourage us to engage with cultural heritage in new ways, and help us think about how global events link to local cultures and shape the lives of people in different ways.

Described as the "solar plexus of modern music", this will be a semi-staged performance by Birmingham Conservatoire students, conducted by Julian Jacobson whose association with the piece - as pianist, conductor and reciter - dates back to the 1970s.

Pierrot Lunaire is preceded by a very special performance in which John O'Gallagher and Hans Koller, described in the Guardian as 'two heavyweight theoreticians fizzing with jazz heat,' join forces with 4th year Conservatoire jazz students Sam Ingvorsen and Gwilym Jones in new arrangements of compositions by Schoenberg and his pupil Webern.

EASTERN PROMISE 7.30pm CBSO Centre £10 (£8) advance £12 (£10) on the door Directors Chris Houlding & Douglas Mitchell Birmingham Conservatoire Wind & Brass Ensembles Chun-Chieh Yen cello Craig Hughes euphonium Janáček Mladi Ricardo Lorenz Monkey to the Sky Janáček Capriccio Seiber Serenade for Wind Gulda Concerto for Violoncello & Wind Orchestra An intriguing evening of atmospheric music for wind ensemble with solo piano and cello ranging from the unique flavour of Janáček and Sieber to the inventive originality of Gulda and Lorenz. Gulda’s concerto is not quite what you would expect. It covers classical minuets and rock anthems, folk tunes and pseudo-atonality. Also, Gulda uses wind orchestra as an accompaniment, which is generally unusual for concertos.

DR NATASHA LOGES (ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC) AND STEPHAN LOGES (BASS-BARITONE) EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY LYRICS IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY DRESS: BRAHMS’S SETTINGS OF LUDWIG HÖLTY’S POETRY (LECTURE-RECITAL) 3.30pm New Lecture Theatre £4 Brahms’s poetic interests ranged far beyond the tastes of most of his contemporaries. One striking inclusion in his panoply of song-poets is the eighteenth-century lyric poet Ludwig Hölty, who specialised in beautifully crafted imitations of the strict forms of Classical Graeco-Roman poetry. This lecture-recital explores why Brahms turned to this poetry, how he responded to its particular formal challenges, and how these settings raise challenging issues of genre and authorship today. It is illustrated by songs by Brahms, Fanny Mendelssohn and Schubert performed by Stephan Loges and Natasha Loges.

This special edition of Emulsion will open with a set from the Hans Koller Quartet featuring John O’Gallagher, followed by a set from My Iris, Clowes’ new band – part of the launch tour of Clowes’ new album for Basho Records. The evening’s finale will be a set from the Emulsion Sinfonietta performing existing Emulsion works (including Joe Cutler’s 2015 commission) and new works by Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian, Percy Pursglove, Hans Koller and Birmingham Conservatoire students.

Beethoven’s Sonata Op.101 broke the sonata tradition and influenced many later composers including Schubert and Brahms, while Ravel’s Valse nobles et sentimentales was entitled in homage to Schubert. We can spot the jazz influences in Kapustin's Piano Sonata No.6, Op.62. Each work is distinct in its rhythmic personality from the marching style in Beethoven’s second movement to the elegant triple meter of Ravel’s Valse; and the jazz and boogie-woogie dance rhythms of the Kapustin create an exciting atmosphere.

Birmingham Conservatoire Ellington Orchestra We warmly welcome you to the launch of Birmingham Conservatoire’s Ellington Orchestra. The Orchestra has been established to form an integral part of the Conservatoire's Jazz Department and to be a regular fixture in the Eastside Jazz Club of the new Conservatoire building, opening September 2017. The first set will include Ellington classics such as Harlem Air Shaft, Birmingham Breakdown, Ko-Ko and Happy Go Lucky Local while the second set will be a complete performance of The Far East Suite, one of his most famous late works collaboratively written with Billy Strayhorn. Our newly-formed Ellington Orchestra promise an intense Big Band experience.

ROY HOWAT (ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND ROYAL CONSERVATOIRE OF SCOTLAND) NEW LIGHT ON CHOPIN’S ÉTUDES 3.30pm Arena Foyer £4 Roy Howat (Keyboard Research Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music and Research Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; also Research Associate at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University) is editing Chopin’s 27 Études as part of the Peters Edition new Complete Edition of Chopin. Despite the plethora of existing editions, much still emerges from studying manuscripts and early editions, often solving problems that have long puzzled pianists, and casting several pieces in a different light from how they have been long perceived. The whole project works to defined editorial guidelines drawn up by a board of renowned Chopin specialists, designed to offer players a full range of viable variants from original sources while clarifying what comes from where and belongs with what.

Jeff and Clark are two internationally revered performers and band leaders, very much part of the jazz tradition and today's scene - as well as committed teachers on the jazz programme at Birmingham Conservatoire. For this one-off concert, Jeff and Clark present and perform a set each with a student band especially put together by them. Their choice of material and concept reflects their profound understanding and awareness of the music. Both musicians are renowned for a willingness to experiment and work with the younger generation, and this special concert is evidence of the living art form that is jazz.

PARISIENNE FESTIVAL Paris is the theme of this mid-year festival, bringing the warmth, colour, mystery and joie de vivre of French music to a wintry Birmingham, as well as the musical fruits of unrequited passion, most notably in the extraordinary Piano Quintet of Cesar Franck. We will hear seasoned favourites, some in unfamiliar guises, such as an arrangement of Debussy’s L'après midi d'un faune, and works scarcely ever played such as the Quintets of Milhaud and solo piano music from Les Six. ‘Imitate the human voice’ is a familiar exhortation to instrumentalists in the pedagogical literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. But what does it mean to imitate the voice in practical terms? To what extent does the ‘vocality’ of the cornetto extend beyond a simple comparison of tone quality – e.g. with ‘a boy’s voice’ (Luigi Zenobi, c.1600) or, more colourfully, with that of ‘a choice eunuch’ (Roger North, c.1695)? In this seminar, Dr Jamie Savan, Senior Lecturer and Associate Director of Research at the Conservatoire, as well as professional cornettist, will also explore ways in which particular attributes of vocality, such as solmization and transposition practice, are embodied in historical cornetto design, with live demonstrations on both hand-crafted and 3D-printed copies of historical instruments. In this seminar George Kennaway, Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield and professional cellist, looks again at reactions to vibrato and advice on its use from the eighteenth century onwards, not primarily to establish the considerable historical evidence for its restrained use, but rather to explore the feelings surrounding it: vibrato is often criticised as a lack of taste, a disease (or depravity), or as a sign of lower social class.

Renowned for her "dazzling interpretative flair and exemplary technique" (Classic FM), violinist Jennifer Pike has taken the musical world by storm with her unique artistry and compelling insight into music from the Baroque to the present day. Jennifer gained international attention in 2002, when aged 12 she became the youngest-ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the youngest major prize-winner in the Menuhin International Violin Competition.

Such terms invite wider speculation about the delimitation of musical discourse. Examples will be drawn from instrumental playing and singing, and reference will be made to modern vibrato controversies as well as historical sources.

INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCES AND SIDE-BY-SIDE

Birmingham Conservatoire has ensembles that are experienced in performing in educational settings. These ensembles range from a chamber orchestra, through woodwind, brass, percussion and string ensembles to world music ensembles, including a samba band and the Conservatoire Folk Ensemble led by Joe Broughton. If you are interested in a Conservatoire group coming and working alongside your musicians get in touch. The Conservatoire can support these activities and will actively look to find ways to make joint activities financially achievable.

TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS

We offer a wide range of in-school workshop opportunities with our students and staff to enhance your curriculum. Our workshops range from composition and creative ensemble workshops to specific instrumental workshops or interactive performances in school. There is also the opportunity for school groups to visit the Conservatoire to enjoy our programme of over 300 concerts each academic year.

The new Birmingham Conservatoire Aspire programme is for young musicians who show a desire to pursue a musical career. JUNIOR CONSERVATOIRE

If you have a particular talent for music, whether it is composing or performing, and the desire to take it further, then the Junior Conservatoire may well be the right place for you. We offer specialist training in jazz and classical music to young musicians between the ages of eight and eighteen with exceptional potential, and the ability to achieve that potential. Even absolute beginners as young as three or four years old can study with us through our Young Strings Project, which offers tuition on string instruments.

Where stated in the event listings, tickets can be booked online at www.bcu.ac.uk/conservatoire. Please note that an additional transaction fee may be added per ticket paid for online.

ON THE DOOR

Where indicated in the event listings, tickets for Conservatoire events are available to purchase from Birmingham Conservatoire Box Office from up to 45 minutes prior to the event start time.

ADVANCE RESERVATION

Where tickets are not available in advance, you can guarantee your ticket by telephoning the Venues, Concerts and Events Office on 0121 331 5909 to reserve your ticket. Telephone lines are open Monday to Friday 10am 4pm. Your ticket will then be available for you to pay for at the Conservatoire Box Office from up to 45 minutes prior to the event start time. Visa, Delta, Connect, Mastercard and Switch cards can be used. Cheques should be made payable to Birmingham City University. When purchasing tickets in advance, credit and debit card bookings incur a ÂŁ1 fee per transaction and all cash payments are fee free.

CONCESSIONS

Unless otherwise stated, concession prices apply to children (16 and under or in full-time education), students, over 60s, disabled and unemployed customers. Please note that we may ask to see identification when admitting people carrying concession tickets.

Tickets are available free of charge for Birmingham City University staff and students. Tickets are subject to availability and are only valid with an ID card. Tickets can be reserved through the Conservatoire Concert Office.

EXCHANGES AND REFUNDS

Birmingham Conservatoire does not offer refunds on tickets after purchase. Where purchased in advance, and subject to availability, tickets can be exchanged for an alternative performance within the current concert season, provided tickets are returned to the Venue, Concert and Events Office no less than 48 hours before the event start time. Tickets for events presented by external artists and organisations within Birmingham Conservatoire are subject to the refund and exchange policy of the organisation.
