Welcome Welcome to our Summer Concert Diary and the biggest programme of public concerts ever mounted by the Conservatoire. Although we are becoming increasingly excited by the prospect of next year’s move to our new stateof-the-art Conservatoire, this summer’s series is dominated by the imminent closure of our Adrian Boult Hall. But, rather than mourn the occasion, we have decided to celebrate the hall’s illustrious history in style with the City of Sounds Festival. City of Sounds begins on 1 May with a concert by Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway and ends on 26 June in tumultuous fashion with Verdi's Requiem for the very last performance in the ABH with our own massed choir and orchestra under the baton of Sir Richard Armstrong, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. In between is a remarkable plethora of concerts indeed I wonder if Birmingham has ever seen so many of its extraordinary musical organisations gathered together under the same roof! And, as our thoughts move towards our new concert hall at Eastside, City of Sounds will be a good test of our ability to attract audiences and become the ‘niche’ 500 seat city centre venue that would be a major asset to Birmingham. As ever I would ask you to please study the diary very carefully so that you don’t miss out on your own special treat within! Julian Lloyd Webber Principal, Birmingham Conservatoire

IMPROVISATION FESTIVAL

In a Conservatoire of jazz and classical performers, you may be forgiven for assuming that the art of improvisation lies solely with the jazz department. It ain't necessarily so... This mini festival of improvisation is programmed to give space to the improvisatory output of classical students and to showcase where they collaborate with the jazz department. This window on Conservatoire activity will show that improvisation is an increasingly important part of being a performing musician in the 21st century regardless of genre.

WED 13 APR CREATIVE ENSEMBLE AND VIA NOVA 8.30pm Adrian Boult Hall £7 (£5)

DOLLAR BRAND PARTY 9.30pm Arena Foyer £7 (£5) Contemporary classical music written by students and staff, to the life affirming joyous sounds of Abdullah Ibrahim. All ensembles combine jazz and classical students and the evening involves two venues, one for formal listening, the other for our opening party. Creative Ensemble comprises performer-composers from the Conservatoire. The ensemble focuses on works by the members of the group. The musical output results from a combination of workshop, discussion and rehearsal. The ensemble strives to have the broadest possible ethos, consequently the works performed often encompass a broad range of approaches from the completely notated to the completely improvised and everything in between. Via Nova, a contemporary music chamber choir directed by Daniel Galbreath, will perform alongside Percy Pursglove's Noise Choir. In this concert they will be collaborating with Pursglove and composers of the Jazz Department in an innovative interdisciplinary project of new music for both jazz and choral improvisers. Dollar Brand Party: A newly-formed band led by Riaan Vosloo explores the breadth and depth of legendary South African jazz composer Abdullah Ibrahim also known as Dollar Brand. The unconventional instrumentation that Riaan has chosen is testament to the open flexibility of these compositions and accentuates the community spirit and inclusivity that we all love Abdullah Ibrahim for. Come and join the party!

THU 14 - SUN 17 APR RHYTHM CHANGES

JAZZ UTOPIA Birmingham City University Our Improvisation Festival coincides with Rhythm Changes: Jazz Utopia which features 110 speakers from 27 countries, as well as performances by Soweto Kinch and Jazzlines Trio, Mosaic and Mike Fletcher Jazz Orchestra. More information can be found at www.rhythmchanges.net

The Conservatoire’s departments of Early Music and Jazz combine to explore improvisatory formats old and new. Improvisation within classical music was a very common part of performance practice up until around the time that Beethoven started to write out the cadenzas for his concertos. Prior to this, Renaissance and Early Baroque performers were fully expected to improvise as well as recite. In this concert you will hear popular forms for improvising such as Bergamasca, Passacaglia, Passemezzo and ground bass. Approaches will vary from stylistically authentic to contemporary jazz.

SOLO PIANO IMPROVISATION 7.45pm Recital Hall £7 (£5) Pianists from both the classical and jazz departments explore the relationship between composition and improvisation. The concert will have a range of music that is either improvised or inspired by the act of improvising. You are invited to hear compositions of an improvisatory nature and compositions with scope for much freedom of decoration and ornamentation as well as freely improvised spontaneous offerings. Repertoire to include Mozart, Monk, Fazil Say, Duke Ellington, Kapustin and Chick Corea.

SAT 16 APR SPECIAL EVENT

TUE 19 APR FLATPACK FILM FESTIVAL

VAMPYR 8pm Adrian Boult Hall £12 (£10) Tickets available from www.flatpackfestival.org.uk (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer) 1932, Germany – 72min With live score by Minima and Stephen Horne PG Flatpack Film Festival kicks off at the Conservatoire with a new live score to one of cinema’s landmarks, Carl Theodore Dreyer’s luminous, mesmerising Vampyr. Loosely based on the work of gothic writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu, this was the director’s follow-up to The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and his first foray into the world of sound. The film tells the twisted tale of a travelling investigator who finds himself in the French village of Courtempierre, where an evil doctor is helping a vampire to prey on a pair of sisters. Our investigator gets caught up in this strange, occult world and does all he can to save the sisters, but the boundary between fact and fantasy becomes increasingly blurred. Although strictly speaking a sound film, the soundtrack to Vampyr was actually added in post-production, and so the film often feels like a silent. That, along with its hypnagogic tone, makes it the perfect choice for a rescore. Providing the accompaniment tonight is four-piece multi-instrumentalist ensemble Minima, joined by the hugely talented film pianist Stephen Horne, to produce an arresting live score. SUN 1 MAY – SUN 26 JUNE

SAYING GOODBYE TO BIRMINGHAM CONSERVATOIRE'S ADRIAN BOULT HALL In conjunction with Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce In a city recognised for its architectural transformations, City of Sounds is an invitation to remember, to celebrate and to look to the future of Birmingham’s rich music scene.

A full City of Sounds programme will be available in April, allowing you to delve into the stories and connections of these artists and organisations with Birmingham Conservatoire that make this collaborative celebration of Birmingham’s music scene so unique.

You can’t fail to notice the redevelopment underway in the Paradise area of Birmingham City Centre, as part of which Birmingham Conservatoire loses its Adrian Boult Hall ahead of its move to a brand new venue in 2017. The hall has been a musical home to many world class musicians and Conservatoire students that have passed through its doors. It has also fulfilled a central role in the cultural fabric of Birmingham as a performance, rehearsal and recording space for a wealth of professional, semiprofessional community and young musicians and arts organisations. With City of Sounds we tell the stories and history of this dual role and say goodbye to the much-loved hall, as we look ahead to an exciting future.

City of Sounds is a one-of-a-kind event in Birmingham’s history, paving the way for the sounds of a future yet to unfold. With everything from classical and jazz to new music and folk, enjoy a summer of music making at its most collaborative, and a demonstration of Birmingham as the true City of Sounds. We look forward to welcoming you. Emily Bartlett Festival Director

In 2014, sound artist Justin Wiggan buried a collection of vinyl records for 12 months and upon harvesting them discovered a unique opportunity to explore the results. Wiggan will perform with The DeadSong Ensemble as part of his Dead Songs project in which exhumed vinyl records that have been buried will be given one last chance to reveal their swan song.

Jazz drum legend and much-loved Conservatoire tutor, Tony Levin passed away in February 2011. His legacy lives on with us in the form of the Tony Levin Drum Prize. Tony’s plan was that each student finalist would play a short set with fellow Jazz Department tutors to determine which student is most deserving of the accolade of ‘most swinging’. Witness a high-energy concert and a spotlight on future careers in jazz drumming: a ‘happening’ as Tony would say.
