Hosted by MC and rap artist Juice Aleem Juice Aleem and DJ Silence (Break Mission), we kick off the weekend festival with a dynamic conversation and Q&A that explores Birmingham’s independent and vibrant contribution to global Hip-Hop culture, from its pioneering MCs, rappers, graffiti artists, word poets, producers and b-boy/girls, to the present day issues faced in developing the scene and artform in Birmingham and across the Midlands. Leading speakers and performers from both the city and wider international stage, will be present on the evening including Pritt Kalsi, Nucleo, T-Kid, Boogie Frantik, Poe One, Link Bink, IMD, Bubbles and Sic - Nis among others. You can also expect mini performances from Marso’s experimental lab and the ‘7 to Spoke’ winners from 2016, a rolling screening of ‘Girl Talk’ exploring the female graffiti experience, PLUS DJ and VJ sets by DJ Mantis and Nucleo. KRE8! is a creative and experimental dance battle contest as a 2vs2 Bonnie and Clyde (Male+Female) format. Want to participate: What do you have to say? Can you step out of your comfort zone? Improvise a narrative on the spot or create a spontaneous duet? Participation is free just enter your name on the facebook event page. Spoken word under a new light! A King or Queen stands head on to a line of 7 participants and must try and keep their role through each 1 minute round. Should they lose, they go to the back of the line and the new victor becomes King or Queen. The first competitor to reach 7 points, or the highest number of points at the end of the battle will be declared the ultimate winner. Judges: John Berkavitch (UK), Trademark Blud (UK). AfroFlux, curated by Juice Aleem, will be taking a deeper look into the message of Hip-Hop and how much Afrofuturism features in the movement since its early days. Many of Hip-Hop’s founders were Afrofuturist in thought, word and action and AfroFlux is the place we expand on those in as many directions as possible.

Watch a screening of The Holiday and then listen to Benji Reid talk about how and why he made this seminal work. The Holiday is a combination of comedy and tragedy in equal parts, seeing through the eyes of a young man contemplating suicide through poetry, dance, singing and live music. Benji Reid’s visual storytelling digs deeper into darker emotional territories evolving out of the Hip-Hop genre. The Holiday has previously played at Sydney Opera House, PS122 New York and over 20 performances in mainland Europe.

AfroFlux is an Professor Robert Beckford exploration of Afrofuturism and its many connections to the Hip-Hop subculture. We will be shining, sharing, reflecting and celebrating all that Afrofuturism is and can be through films, talks and performances. Introduced by Professor Robert Beckford, a respected academic in African and African Caribbean history, religion and popular culture, other confirmed speakers include Quartz, Jenica Leah and Florence Okoye.
