As our social and political landscape seems often more focussed on division than unity, I take solace in the power that arts and culture have to bring people together. Here at Birmingham Hippodrome, we pride ourselves on creating experiences that unite our region’s communities, and in recent years have grown the number of free festivals that we produce for everyone to enjoy. Following one of the largest ever Chinese New Year celebrations here on our doorstep, we are looking forward to our fourth B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival in May, and the return of our popular Summer in Southside family festival in July. Over the summer you’ll also have the chance to see two of our own 120th anniversary projects, both demonstrating our ongoing commitment to bringing

new talent to our stage. A long-awaited new coproduction of the musical The Color Purple in July and West Side Story with a big youth community cast in August. Having auditioned over 1,000 young people to take part in the latter, one thing is for sure: Birmingham’s got talent! Then in October, to coincide with the actual anniversary of our opening back in 1899 as a circus and variety house, we celebrate with the international sensation Circus 1903. Don’t miss our themed half-term birthday celebrations, kicking off with our spectacular open day on 26 October. As we say a fond farewell to Birmingham Royal Ballet’s David Bintley with his ever-popular Hobson’s Choice, we promote one of our most exciting new seasons of ballet and dance including: BBC Young Dancer’s first ever televised finals outside of London, 10 Soldiers from Associate Artist Rosie Kay, a dramatic new Matthew Bourne production, not to mention a return of Carlos Acosta making a guest appearance dancing with his company Acosta Danza. Also, another Associate Artist Kate Prince returns with her classic Some Like It Hip Hop and again next year with new dance musical Message In A Bottle, set to Sting’s iconic music. Musicals lovers are not forgotten. Choose if you can from some of the best-loved classics of all time such as Annie, Joseph, Grease and Blood Brothers, or the new Gloria Estefan musical On Your Feet. And there’s plenty for 2020 including extra dates for Les Misérables, Priscilla’s first visit, and the return of both We Will Rock You and Mamma Mia! - with two more musical juggernauts to be announced very soon. Do something different, try something new. Introduce a friend and share some timeless stories, and together we might just cross some of those divides.

For the first time, the BBC Young Dancer Grand Final will be broadcast live from a venue outside London and this is your chance to be part of the live television audience.

A thrilling portrait of army life telling the stories of men and women serving on the front line.

Join us at Birmingham Hippodrome for an evening showcasing the UK’s best young dancers in four categories: Ballet, Contemporary, South Asian Dance and Street Dance. They have already made it through three competitive rounds. The five outstanding finalists will now perform in front of a panel of internationally renowned judges for the overall title. Each finalist will dance three pieces, including a brand new solo made for them by an acclaimed choreographer. At the end of the evening, one of the finalists will become BBC Young Dancer 2019. The evening will also feature a performance by the 2017 winner, Nafisah Baba.

In 2008, choreographer Rosie Kay joined the 4th Battalion The Rifles, participating in full battle exercises and visiting the National Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. What came of these observations was the award-winning, five-star international hit 5 Soldiers. Ten years on, Rosie Kay expands the work for the large stage with 10 Soldiers, a world première commissioned by Birmingham Hippodrome. Now a full Army squad, 10 Soldiers looks at life in 2019’s British Army including issues of equality and diversity. CALENDAR GIRLS THE MUSICAL Calendar Girls The Musical is inspired by the true story of a group of ladies, who decide to appear nude for a Women’s Institute calendar in order to raise funds to buy a settee for their local hospital, in memory of one of their husbands, and have to date raised almost £5 million for Bloodwise. This musical comedy shows life in their Yorkshire village, how it happened, the effect on husbands, sons and daughters, and how a group of ordinary ladies achieved something extraordinary. Leading the cast are Sarah Jane Buckley (Blood Brothers and Hollyoaks), Sue Devaney (Dinnerladies, Casualty, Coronation Street, Mamma Mia!), Julia Hills (Broadchurch, The Archers), Judy Holt (Cold Feet, Scott & Bailey), Lesley Joseph (Birds of a Feather), Lisa Maxwell (Loose Women, Hollyoaks, The Bill) and Rebecca Storm (Evita, Les Misérables, Chess).

Gary Barlow and Tim Firth grew up in the same village in the North of England and have been friends for 25 years. With Take That, Gary has written and co-written 14 number one singles, has sold over 50 million records worldwide and is a six times Ivor Novello Award winner. When Hobson’s Choice was premièred at the Royal Opera House in 1989, David Bintley’s earthy comedy after Harold Brighouse’s play received a standing ovation the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the première of Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée in 1960.

All performances feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted for these performances by Philip Ellis and Jonathan Lo.

With one of those scores you can’t help but whistle, composed by Paul Reade, composer of themes for The Antiques Roadshow and The Flumps, the ballet has remained hugely popular ever since.

Blast off into space this summer! This year, our FREE family festival goes intergalactic and explores the spectacle and wonders of outer space. Celebrating 50 years since the first moon landings and 120 years of Birmingham Hippodrome, the streets of Southside around the theatre will be transformed into a lunar landscape for a whole weekend packed with performances, installations and extra-terrestrial antics.

Ballet Black A Triple Bill featuring Ingoma Celebrating their eighteenth year, Ballet Black’s latest programme contrasts dramatic and inventive storytelling in a lively showcase of modern ballets. Ingoma (meaning song) is a specially commissioned piece by Company dancer and choreographer Mthuthuzeli November, which imagines the struggles of black South African miners in 1946. A fusion of ballet, African dance and singing, they portray a milestone moment in the country’s history. Autumn Mixed Bill New Lister | The Suit | Nine Sinatra Songs Birmingham Royal Ballet is proud to announce a first-of-its-kind collaboration with the multi-award-winning Ballet Black, a company dedicated to increasing diversity in ballet, founded and directed by Ballet Now Creative Consortium member, Cassa Pancho. Dancers of both Birmingham Royal Ballet and Ballet Black will appear in this exciting triple bill. The bill opens with the fourth Ballet Now commission, from young choreographer and Queensland Ballet dancer Jack Lister and composer Tom Harrold.

Second is Cathy Marston’s moving tale of a broken marriage, the critically acclaimed and National-Dance-Awardwinning ballet The Suit. The bill will close with Twyla Tharp’s sizzling tribute to Old Blue Eyes, Nine Sinatra Songs. Giselle Giselle stands alongside Coppélia and Swan Lake as one of the most celebrated 19th-century ballets. David Bintley and Galina Samsova’s exquisite production stays true to the spirit and steps of the original. Giselle and Loys are deeply in love, but Loys is really Count Albrecht and is betrothed to another. When Giselle discovers his secret, the heartbreak is too much to bear. Driven mad by despair, she takes her own life.

At night, a sorrowful Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, but he is in terrible danger. The bitter ghosts of jilted brides rise and condemn him to dance himself to death. Only Giselle’s love from beyond the grave can save him.

The Duke can have any woman he wants, and lives a life of frivolity and corruption. Rigoletto, the Duke’s jester, ridicules the fathers and husbands of the women the Duke flirts with, who then set about seeking their vengeance against him. But Rigoletto has his own daughter’s honour to protect, and events unfold with unintended consequences.

One afternoon deep in the forest, the Forester stumbles across a young vixen, and takes her home as a pet for his family. But this playful creature has bigger plans and escapes to take on the world on her own terms. As her adventure unfolds, all the creatures of the forest come to life, in a tale that celebrates the circle of life.

Verdi wrote that Rigoletto was his best opera, and with its dramatic storyline and score – featuring the instantly recognisable La donna è mobile – it’s easy to see why it continues to be such an enduring favourite. This timely revival of WNO’s acclaimed production is set in the White House during the Kennedy era, and sees Mark S Doss (Tosca, Spring 2018) return to the Company in the title role. It’s easy to find us Main entrance address Hurst St, Southside, Birmingham, B5 4TB. We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233 (fees may apply). Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes and the West Midlands Metro pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks.

NB: For staff training, from time to time we may change our opening hours, and occasionally we monitor calls. Payment • We accept most major credit and debit cards. After payment, we’ll send e-tickets or post them to your registered card billing address. • We also take cheques payable to ‘Birmingham Hippodrome’. • Unfortunately we don’t accept SOLT Theatre Tokens, but you can buy and redeem our own Birmingham Hippodrome Gift Vouchers. Privacy Policy We have updated our privacy policy to comply with new regulations. You can change your preferences at any time by contacting us online, by post or by phone. Donations When booking tickets, please consider making a small donation to support Hippodrome Projects. This helps us continue expanding our community projects, access initiatives, and education work. Donations may be eligible for Gift Aid at no extra cost to you.

A note on ticket prices, discounts and charges • All ticket prices listed in this brochure and elsewhere are subject to change at any time. • In response to demand we may adapt prices, seating areas and discounting, and availability of concessions or discounts may be limited at our discretion. • Check online at birminghamhippodrome.com or call us on 0844 338 5000* for current prices. • Tickets for selected events may include a building improvement levy retained by Birmingham Hippodrome. • We are an unsubsidised charity and for some time have made an external transaction charge on tickets for selected performances. It has been possible for eligible bookers (e.g. group organisers, Friends, Corporate Partners etc) to pay a reduced transaction charge or have it waived as a benefit. In keeping with many venues and ticketing services, and with recent advice from Trading Standards, we are moving towards a new system whereby the published ticket price will include any share the Hippodrome agrees with touring producers. This is made clear wherever we publish prices. 50

Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our main house performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet and pantomime, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). For specific family shows in our Patrick Studio, we will always indicate age guidance and any terms or prices regarding babes-in-arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or BSL interpreted performances, please see the show pages or refer to the diary on pages 52/53. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. Please book your guide dog in with Ticket Sales in advance of your visit. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. We can arrange seats close to the signer or caption board for BSL interpreted and captioned performances. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. For visitors with complex accessibility needs, a folding mobile hoist can be booked in advance by calling our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060. Toilet facilities To ensure everyone’s welcome at Birmingham Hippodrome, in common with an increasing number of public places, we’ve introduced all gender toilets on Level 4. Designated Male toilets and Female toilets are still available and easily accessible on all other floors. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see p4 for some tasty options). Enjoy your next visit! Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, changes may occur.

• We will always endeavour to keep discounts as generous as possible so that no bookers are at a disadvantage. Discounts vary, cannot be combined nor applied retrospectively, and may be restricted or limited. They are generally available on presentation of valid ID, and our range includes: 18 and under or 65+, full-time students, selected Hippodrome memberships, benefits claimants, groups of 8+ or 10+ upwards, school and youth groups, those with access or disability needs, plus occasional early booking discounts or special offers. • There will be an overlap period for a few months in 2019/20 where tickets for some productions have an external charge and others have all charges included in the published price. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. We regularly use Ticketmaster and other well-known agents. You are advised to check their charges when booking. • We add a postage charge of £1.50 for purchases eight days or more before a performance.
