There is something about the British winter that makes me seek out a nice fireplace to sit by, with a cup of something warming, to share stories with friends and family. Through fairytales and fables, myths and legends, we share experiences to help us interpret the world around us, passing on our values and moral codes to future generations. And for me, experiencing storytelling on a grand scale, through a live performance, is even more potent. In 2018, we’re bringing you many timeless tales, old and new. From Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty to Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella brilliantly reconceived as a war-time romance; to Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up, our year-end pantomime. We’re also co-producing a new Hansel & Gretel with METRO-BOULOT-DODO and Open Theatre Company for our Patrick Studio.

Looking forward, we are putting plans in place for a complete renovation of our bars and foyers, enabling much more daytime programming of free and low cost activity for children and families. You’ll start to see some of this work happening during the year. And given 2019 is the 120th Anniversary of the Hippodrome, we’re launching our 1899 Club, seeking £10-a-month donors to help preserve our historic auditorium, ensure everyone is welcome, and to enable new stories to be told for future generations. Please read more on page 32 and give your support - thank you. I hope you’ll share some memorable Hippodrome stories with your own friends and family. I look forward to seeing you here soon.

2018 also marks 100 years since the ‘Representation of the People Act’ enabling most UK women to vote, so it is perhaps apt too that many of the stories you’ll see on our stage this year feature strong female characters. From Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked, to Puccini’s tragic Tosca, to everyone’s favourite schoolgirl Matilda. We also have stories of real women who had huge impact on the world around them - Carole King’s story unfolds in a return week of Beautiful, and Evita, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical which immortalised Eva Peron. And Ballet British Columbia return with a programme of three breathtaking modern dance pieces, all by internationally acclaimed female choreographers.

It’s not just about the girls though. We are also very excited to stage some exciting new musicals, including The Band, featuring music by Take That; a new adaptation of the classic 1980s film An Officer and a Gentleman; and Titanic, a musical based on stories of real people on board the fated ship as the final hours unfold. For those seeking some humour, The Play That Goes Wrong will tickle your funny bone, or giggle through our bumper comedy week on page 8.

Don Alvaro and the beautiful Leonora plan to elope, but when her father is killed by a stray bullet from Alvaro’s gun, it triggers an inescapable chain of events. Forced to flee as they are pursued by her brother, who has sworn vengeance, the characters are thrown together and torn apart in a series of coincidental meetings. The otherworldly presence of the carefree Preziosilla throughout provides a constant reminder that the force of destiny really is unstoppable.

The arrogant and charismatic Don Giovanni seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled exlovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. But when he refuses to show remorse, vengeance is inevitable and leads to his ultimate demise.

Verdi’s epic opera is told through a rousing score that includes the instantly-familiar Overture popularised through its use in classic film scores and advertisements. This new production directed by WNO Artistic Director, David Pountney, and conducted by WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi - marks the beginning of a three year partnership with Theater Bonn to bring new productions of some of Verdi’s greatest operas to the stage.

Based on the legend of Don Juan, Welsh National Opera’s production is set during the Spanish Golden Age. Mozart reflects both comedy and tragedy brilliantly in the score, including the ‘Catalogue’ aria detailing Giovanni’s list of 2065 lovers, the sparkling ‘Champagne’ aria and the high drama of the heart-stopping finale.

As he schemes to trick the lovers and get what he wants, dramatic and tragic events unfold, leaving Tosca stood alone clutching a dagger in her bloodstained hands, and with a shocking final twist to follow. The turbulent backdrop of Rome during the Napoleonic invasion is an apt setting for this thrilling story of love, lust, loyalty and corruption. Puccini characterises the drama through his exquisite melodies and orchestration, and fabulous arias that have made Tosca one of the best-loved operas in the world.

In the Upper Room Mixed Programme Our summer mixed programme includes In the Upper Room, one of American dance phenomenon Twyla Tharp’s most iconic ballets, and Kin., created for the Company by former Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer Alexander Whitley.

by Phil Kline, played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. Kin. celebrates the raw kinetics of dance, the virtuosity of ballet technique and the potential for movement to bring us together in different ways.

The line-up is completed with a new ballet commissioned from choreographer George Williamson as part of Ballet Now, a unique five-year programme, run in conjunction with Sadler’s Wells and a consortium of industry leaders, that will develop choreographers, composers and designers to create new and innovative works for the world stage.

All performances feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted for these performances by Koen Kessels and Jonathan Lo.

In the most famous love story ever told, a dangerous cocktail of arrogant youth, simmering tension and deadly feuds erupts, leaving two young lovers at the mercy of powerful families and their own hearts.

War Horse Following eight record-breaking years in London’s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over seven million people, the National Theatre’s acclaimed play War Horse returns to Birmingham Hippodrome in October as part of its 10th Anniversary Tour. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of

phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses thrillingly to life on stage. A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, a 5% transaction charge may apply where applicable. This covers administration costs and enables us to continue offering a dedicated booking service. • We won’t add this charge if you pay with cash in person for non-group bookings. • Transaction charges are not applicable on shows in the Patrick Centre. • As a benefit of membership, we also waive the transaction charge for Birmingham Hippodrome Friends tickets when a Friends discount applies. • Most discounted groups and schools prices quoted already include a transaction charge. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. Our official agent is Ticketmaster, with other agencies taking allocations of tickets from time to time. • For purchases eight days or more before a performance, we’ll add a postage charge from £1. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our main house performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). For specific family shows in our Patrick Centre studio, we will always indicate age guidance and any terms or prices regarding babes-in-arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Pantomime is intended to entertain audiences of all ages with something for everyone. It includes lots of traditional laughs, slapstick fun, some scary moments and impressive effects, plus some cheeky innuendo which most audiences find goes over the heads of children. Age guidance 5+, no under 3s admitted, and no babes in arms. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or signed performances, please see the foot of show pages or refer to the diary on pages 48/49.
