Winter 2017/18 Unforgettable performance, powered by you birminghamhippodrome.com 0844 338 5000
There is something about the British winter that makes me seek out a nice fireplace to sit by, with a cup of something warming, to share stories with friends and family. Through fairytales and fables, myths and legends, we share experiences to help us interpret the world around us, passing on our values and moral codes to future generations. And for me, experiencing storytelling on a grand scale, through a live performance, is even more potent. In 2018, we’re bringing you many timeless tales, old and new. From Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty to Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella brilliantly reconceived as a war-time romance; to Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up, our year-end pantomime. We’re also co-producing a new Hansel & Gretel with METRO-BOULOT-DODO and Open Theatre Company for our Patrick Studio.
Looking forward, we are putting plans in place for a complete renovation of our bars and foyers, enabling much more daytime programming of free and low cost activity for children and families. You’ll start to see some of this work happening during the year. And given 2019 is the 120th Anniversary of the Hippodrome, we’re launching our 1899 Club, seeking £10-a-month donors to help preserve our historic auditorium, ensure everyone is welcome, and to enable new stories to be told for future generations. Please read more on page 32 and give your support - thank you. I hope you’ll share some memorable Hippodrome stories with your own friends and family. I look forward to seeing you here soon.

2018 also marks 100 years since the ‘Representation of the People Act’ enabling most UK women to vote, so it is perhaps apt too that many of the stories you’ll see on our stage this year feature strong female characters. From Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked, to Puccini’s tragic Tosca, to everyone’s favourite schoolgirl Matilda. We also have stories of real women who had huge impact on the world around them - Carole King’s story unfolds in a return week of Beautiful, and Evita, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical which immortalised Eva Peron. And Ballet British Columbia return with a programme of three breathtaking modern dance pieces, all by internationally acclaimed female choreographers.
It’s not just about the girls though. We are also very excited to stage some exciting new musicals, including The Band, featuring music by Take That; a new adaptation of the classic 1980s film An Officer and a Gentleman; and Titanic, a musical based on stories of real people on board the fated ship as the final hours unfold. For those seeking some humour, The Play That Goes Wrong will tickle your funny bone, or giggle through our bumper comedy week on page 8.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier and Tony Award®-winning West End production returns to Birmingham following a sell-out run in November. “The audience loves Beautiful” (Daily Mail) and critics agree! Called “slick and beautifully played” (The Times), the “amazing story of the song writing talents of Carole King told through laughter and tears” (BBC Radio 2), critics are celebrating this “tapestry of greatest hits” (The Guardian). Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best

friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, including one of the bestselling albums of all time, Tapestry, and countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and The Locomotion.

Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty, New Adventures return to Birmingham Hippodrome with one of their most popular and beloved productions. Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella – a thrilling and evocative love story, set in London during the Second World War – forms part of the company’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairytale has, at its heart, a true wartime romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. With Lez Brotherston’s sumptuous costumes and sets, which won an Olivier Award for his original designs, and lighting by Olivier Award-winning Neil Austin, Cinderella will be performed in Surround
Sound, designed by Paul Groothuis and featuring a specially commissioned recording played by a 60 piece orchestra.

La forza del destino
Don Giovanni
Verdi
Mozart
Don Alvaro and the beautiful Leonora plan to elope, but when her father is killed by a stray bullet from Alvaro’s gun, it triggers an inescapable chain of events. Forced to flee as they are pursued by her brother, who has sworn vengeance, the characters are thrown together and torn apart in a series of coincidental meetings. The otherworldly presence of the carefree Preziosilla throughout provides a constant reminder that the force of destiny really is unstoppable.
The arrogant and charismatic Don Giovanni seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled exlovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. But when he refuses to show remorse, vengeance is inevitable and leads to his ultimate demise.
Verdi’s epic opera is told through a rousing score that includes the instantly-familiar Overture popularised through its use in classic film scores and advertisements. This new production directed by WNO Artistic Director, David Pountney, and conducted by WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi - marks the beginning of a three year partnership with Theater Bonn to bring new productions of some of Verdi’s greatest operas to the stage.
Based on the legend of Don Juan, Welsh National Opera’s production is set during the Spanish Golden Age. Mozart reflects both comedy and tragedy brilliantly in the score, including the ‘Catalogue’ aria detailing Giovanni’s list of 2065 lovers, the sparkling ‘Champagne’ aria and the high drama of the heart-stopping finale.

Tosca Puccini Floria Tosca may have many admirers but she only has eyes for one man, the painter Cavaradossi. But the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia, has other ideas and wants her for himself. As he schemes to trick the lovers and get what he wants, dramatic and tragic events unfold, leaving Tosca stood alone clutching a dagger in her bloodstained hands, and with a shocking final twist to follow. The turbulent backdrop of Rome during the Napoleonic invasion is an apt setting for this thrilling story of love, lust, loyalty and corruption. Puccini characterises the drama through his exquisite melodies and orchestration, and fabulous arias that have made Tosca one of the best-loved operas in the world.

A brand new musical that will simply sweep you off your feet! An Officer and a Gentleman is based on the Oscarwinning film starring Richard Gere. Its feel-good soundtrack includes the hit song from the movie Up Where We Belong along with many 80s classic anthems including Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Material Girl, Don’t Cry Out Loud, Alone, Toy Soldiers, I Was Made for Lovin’ You, and The Final Countdown.
With direction by Nikolai Foster (Artistic Director Curve, Annie, Calamity Jane), choreography by Kate Prince (Into The Hoods, Groove on Down the Road, ZooNation) and musical supervision by Tony Award-winning Sarah Travis (Sweeney Todd, Sister Act), this inspiring, breathtakingly romantic musical celebrates triumph over adversity and features one of the most iconic romantic scenes ever portrayed on screen.
Zack Mayo is in training to become a US Navy Pilot. When he rolls into boot camp with a bit too much of a swagger, drill Sergeant Foley doesn’t make life easy for him. When he falls for local girl Paula Pokrifki and tragedy befalls his friend and fellow candidate, Zack realises the importance of love and friendship and finds the courage to be himself and win the heart of the woman he loves. It’s only then he can truly become an Officer and a Gentleman.

ART Art is a phenomenon and one of the most successful plays ever. Having opened in 1996, it took both the West End and Broadway by storm, won Olivier, Tony, Moliere and every other major theatre award, and has been packing in audiences worldwide for more than twenty years. When Serge spends an extortionate amount of money on an all white modernist painting, his close friends Marc and Yvan are baffled. But does their violent reactions to this provocative canvas mirror more dangerous antagonisms towards each other? Yasmina Reza’s dazzling study of friendship, prejudice and tolerance is a masterpiece. The all-star cast features Nigel Havers whose numerous credits include The Charmer, Don’t Wait Up and Downton Abbey on television; he was BAFTA nominated for his role in the Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire; and
theatre credits include The Importance of Being Earnest, Rebecca and Single Spies. Olivier Award-winning Denis Lawson is known for his roles as John Jarndyce in the BBC’s adaptation of Bleak House, as Gordon Urquhart in the film Local Hero, as DI Steve McAndrew in BBC 1’s New Tricks, and as Wedge Antilles in the original Star Wars trilogy. His West End credits include La Cage Aux Folles and Oleanna. Stephen Tompkinson’s television credits include Drop the Dead Donkey, Ballykissangel, Grafters, Wild at Heart, DCI Banks and he starred in the film Brassed Off. He won the 1994 British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actor. His stage credits range from Spamalot to Tartuffe.

Titanic The Musical In the final hours of 14 April 1912 the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and ‘the unsinkable ship’ slowly sank. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century. 1,517 men, women and children lost their lives. Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own. All innocently unaware of the fate awaiting them, the Third Class immigrants dream of a better life in America, the Second Class imagine they too can join the lifestyles of the rich and famous, whilst the millionaire Barons of the First Class anticipate legacies lasting forever.
With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone (Woman of the Year and 1776), the pair have collectively won an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award and three Tony awards. The original Broadway production of Titanic The Musical won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. This brilliant new production direct from London won sweeping critical acclaim across the board.

In the Upper Room Mixed Programme Our summer mixed programme includes In the Upper Room, one of American dance phenomenon Twyla Tharp’s most iconic ballets, and Kin., created for the Company by former Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer Alexander Whitley.
by Phil Kline, played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. Kin. celebrates the raw kinetics of dance, the virtuosity of ballet technique and the potential for movement to bring us together in different ways.
The line-up is completed with a new ballet commissioned from choreographer George Williamson as part of Ballet Now, a unique five-year programme, run in conjunction with Sadler’s Wells and a consortium of industry leaders, that will develop choreographers, composers and designers to create new and innovative works for the world stage.
All performances feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted for these performances by Koen Kessels and Jonathan Lo.
Quick-witted and even quicker footed, In the Upper Room is an exhilarating, athletic ballet in which dancers in sneakers and striking red pointe shoes dominate the stage with energy, flair and finesse. Alexander Whitley’s Kin. is an abstract piece danced to a pulsing, hypnotic score

War Horse Following eight record-breaking years in London’s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over seven million people, the National Theatre’s acclaimed play War Horse returns to Birmingham Hippodrome in October as part of its 10th Anniversary Tour. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of
phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses thrillingly to life on stage. War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical event which takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you…
It’s easy to find us Main entrance address Hurst St, Southside, Birmingham, B5 4TB. We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233. Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. Please note Tickets are sold for the use of the buyer only (and his or her party) and are not for resale for commercial gain by the holder. We reserve the right to cancel tickets and refuse entry should we have reason to believe this condition has not been respected.

A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, a 5% transaction charge may apply where applicable. Ticket prices • All ticket prices listed in this brochure and elsewhere are subject to change at any time. • In response to demand, we may adapt prices, seating areas and discounting. We may also limit availability of concession rate and discounted tickets.

Concessions & discounts These are generally offered on the top three price bands for selected performances, subject to availability. Our range includes: • Patrons aged 18 & under, and 65+ • Full-time students • Memberships: Friends, Patrons and First Night • Claimants, Passport To Leisure • Groups of 8+ or 10+ upwards • Schools and Youth Groups • Patrons with access or disability requirements • Occasional early booking discounts Donations When booking tickets, please consider making a small donation to support Hippodrome Projects. This helps us continue expanding our community projects, access initiatives, and education work. Donations may be eligible for Gift Aid at no extra cost to you. Conditions of sale Full terms and conditions are available at birminghamhippodrome.com or you can call us on 0844 338 5000* and just ask one of our friendly team. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our main house performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). For specific family shows in our Patrick Centre studio, we will always indicate age guidance and any terms or prices regarding babes-in-arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Pantomime is intended to entertain audiences of all ages with something for everyone. It includes lots of traditional laughs, slapstick fun, some scary moments and impressive effects, plus some cheeky innuendo which most audiences find goes over the heads of children. Age guidance 5+, no under 3s admitted, and no babes in arms. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or signed performances, please see the foot of show pages or refer to the diary on pages 48/49. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call 0844 338 5000* for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. Please book your guide dog in with Ticket Sales in advance of your visit. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Centre studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see page 27 for some tasty options). Please do not bring your own food and drink items into the venue. Enjoy your next visit! Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, changes may occur.
