Do something different – see something new… I joined Birmingham Hippodrome as Chief Executive in October, and it’s been a whirlwind getting to know my new city and business. I feel absolutely at home in Birmingham with its vibrant and cosmopolitan attitude and ambitions. Every morning as I walk to work from the Jewellery Quarter, the energy of this city as it comes to life for the day is palpable - I seem to have arrived at a very exciting time, where everything feels possible. At the Sydney Opera House, and since then in both Cardiff and Leicester, I’ve seen what a galvanising effect a cultural institution can have presenting performances that appeal to absolutely everyone, and in bringing a city together to celebrate shared live experiences. As the city grows, I’m keen to ensure that a varied cultural offer is promoted front and centre, to reinforce Birmingham’s attractiveness and international appeal. As one of the most successful and popular theatres in the world, Birmingham Hippodrome is perfectly placed, with its numerous creative partners, to expand its reach, deepen engagement and make a big difference to people’s lives. I’ve enjoyed starting some new conversations with my team here, with patrons and with producers about how we can do even more together.

I want to see the Hippodrome using its expertise to bring unique events to Birmingham and to grow an audience that is truly reflective of the city – young, dynamic and diverse. Do let me know if you share any of these ambitions. There is a huge amount to choose from in 2016. As a dance enthusiast, I’m very much looking forward to Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty and Mary Poppins, which Matthew also choreographed. And there’s an incredible programme for the fifth International Dance Festival Birmingham - Cloudgate Dance Theatre and Carlos Acosta are two not to be missed. I look forward to seeing you here for a performance soon and hope you enjoy our new 2016 season.

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty A Gothic Romance Music by Tchaikovsky

Matthew Bourne’s dazzling production of Sleeping Beauty has won the hearts of thousands and smashed box office records across the UK and the USA since its premiere. New Adventures have revived this new classic in the repertoire to give audiences one more chance to see the final piece in the trio of Tchaikovsky masterpieces. If you loved Nutcracker! and the famous Swan Lake with a menacing all-male ensemble, this production will become another firm favourite. With sumptuous sets and costumes, evocative lighting and masterly storytelling you will be transported in time from the halcyon days of the late Edwardian era through to the modern day.

In this programme of one-act ballets, Birmingham Royal Ballet focuses on works by one of England’s most influential choreographers, Sir Frederick Ashton, and his deft hand at characterisation and narrative through dance. In The Dream, love gets out of hand for mortals and fairies alike in an elegant and witty distillation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Created in 1964 to mark Shakespeare’s birthday, The Dream kicks off Birmingham Royal Ballet’s year-long commemoration of 400 years since his death. Alongside it, A Month in the Country, inspired by Turgenev’s play, tells the story of a bored housewife, a charming young man and a dreaming girl. A poignant romantic tale.

The Barber of Seville should be available on the NHS. Upbeat and optimistic, Rossini’s sunniest creation is the perfect pick-me up. Its fantastic slapstick energy is destined to rub off on anyone who sees it. The pace is fast and never lets up from the start. Everyone is carried along by a whirlwind of crazy disguises, twists and turns and unlikely interventions. Opening with one of the best loved of all overtures, it’s full of wit and playfulness. Figaro lets us know he is society’s problem solver in the great comic aria, Largo al factotum. Rosina’s sparkling aria Una voce poco fa makes it very clear that she’s not someone you’d want to mess with.

Welsh National Opera have assembled an exceptional cast of comic performers including the peerless Andrew Shore as the greedy Doctor Bartolo. This is WNO’s first new production of The Barber of Seville for nearly 30 years. What makes us tick? Mozart and his librettist da Ponte understood this better than most great artists. In The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart allows us to eavesdrop into a day in the life of Count Almaviva’s household.

Was it really happy-ever-after for the Almaviva household? Has the distant thunder of the revolution in France turned into a storm from which they cannot escape?

From humble beginnings in Cuba to performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, Carlos Acosta has had an incredible career. He has played many of ballet’s most iconic roles including Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Basilio in Don Quixote and The Prince in Nutcracker. He has worked with leading international ballet companies including Ballet Nacional de Cuba, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet and Houston Ballet, written two novels and appeared in two feature films. For his final UK tour dancing classical works, he performs excerpts from his favourite ballet repertoire alongside an incredible cast of dancers from Cuba, with a full live orchestra. Welsh National Opera celebrate their 70th birthday with the double bill that started it all. Cav & Pag (as they are affectionately known) are as full-on and intense as Italian opera gets. Each opera packs in much high drama and powerful music and Cavalleria rusticana’s highlights include the glorious Easter Hymn and Intermezzo. Pagliacci features one of the greatest of all tenor arias, Vesti la giubba.

In Parenthesis is young British composer Iain Bell’s adaptation of the epic poem by poet, writer and artist David Jones. Private John Ball and his comrades are posted to the Somme. In Mametz Wood they enter a strange realm – outside of time, dream-like but deadly. Rather than simply reporting the horrors of the Somme, In Parenthesis dares to offer hope. Even here amongst the destruction, a fragile flowering of regeneration and re-birth can be found.

The sumptuous period-set production features a recreation of a Sicilian village square. It is only fitting that the cast for these birthday performances includes some of Wales’ greatest opera talent. Everyone who enjoys the elegance and pageantry of opera will want to embrace Cav & Pag.

Bell’s beautiful score combines traditional Welsh song with moments of otherworldliness, terror, humour and transcendence. David Pountney’s period production is both an evocation and a commemoration of the events of the Somme.

The Beauties Awake! As part of our continuing relationship with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, we are delighted to bring to the main stage for the 6th consecutive year, prior to the main production of Sleeping Beauty, a short dance piece highlighting the emerging talent of local young dancers aged between 12 and 18 and student choreographers.

Hosted by Breakin’ Convention’s Artistic Director Jonzi D alongside Soweto Kinch, Open Art Surgery is a showcase of brand new ideas in hip hop theatre. We invite you to delve into the minds and souls of artists as they dare to try something new, dangerous and exciting!

Working with professional choreographers – Clare Palethorpe and Joe Walkling (New Adventures Dancer) – the young people will create their own response to Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty. The Curtain Raiser is becoming a main feature of the Matthew Bourne season at Birmingham Hippodrome and is highly commended by Matthew Bourne himself, who is a great supporter of developing and showcasing new skills. The main performance of Sleeping Beauty will commence directly after the Curtain Raiser.

This special Moving Rap edition brings six rappers from across the country together to explore what happens when their word becomes movement and their movement becomes word. At the end of the show we welcome you, the audience, to give your own diagnosis with the opportunity to ask the performers questions and give feedback. Full line-up to be confirmed. The Taming of the Shrew Choreographer John Cranko adapts Shakespeare’s tale of mismatched marriage to create his undoubted masterpiece. In this sparkling comedy, independent and tempestuous Kate gives her suitor Petruchio considerably more than he bargained for. Shakespeare Triple Bill The Moor’s Pavane | The Shakespeare Suite | Wink Birmingham Royal Ballet’s celebration of Shakespeare continues with a combination of tragedy, comedy and poetry, all translated into dance. José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane distils the passion and drama of Shakespeare’s Othello into a thrilling one-act tragedy, tightly focussed on four characters and their jealousy. David Bintley’s The Shakespeare Suite sets a collection of the Bard’s best-loved characters to a swinging Duke Ellington score and offers a quicksilver visit to Shakespearean couples of every sort, star-crossed, bewitched, squabbling, and romantic, plus a powerhouse solo. We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233. Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. Please note Temporary re-routing of traffic means that there is no access to Hill Street or Smallbrook Queensway via Ladywell Walk and Hurst Street. How to book You can book or reserve tickets, become a Friend, reserve a restaurant table, make a donation or just ask us a question. • Tickets and information 0844 338 5000 (calls cost 4.5p per min plus your phone company’s access charge). • 10am – 8pm (performance days), 10am – 6pm (non-performance days). • We are closed most Sundays, with a reduced counter service when there is a performance. Choose your own seats online (to a maximum of nine tickets per performance): • birminghamhippodrome.com Organise a group booking. • 0844 338 7000 (calls cost 4.5p per min plus your phone company’s access charge). • Mon – Fri, 10am – 5pm NB: For staff training, from time to time we may change our opening hours, and occasionally we monitor calls. Payment • We accept most major credit and debit cards. After payment, we’ll post tickets to your registered card address. • We also take cheques payable to ‘Birmingham Hippodrome’. • Unfortunately we don’t accept SOLT Theatre Tokens, but you can buy and redeem our own Birmingham Hippodrome Gift Vouchers. A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, we add a 5% transaction charge. This covers administration costs and enables us to continue offering a dedicated booking service. • We won’t add this charge if you pay with cash in person for non-group bookings. • As a benefit of membership, we also waive the transaction charge for Birmingham Hippodrome Friends tickets when a Friends discount applies. • Most discounted groups and schools prices quoted already include a transaction charge. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. Our official agents are Ticketmaster and The Ticket Factory, with other agencies taking allocations of tickets from time to time. • For purchases eight days or more before a performance, we’ll add a postage charge from £1. • We have several 0844 telephone numbers. Calls cost 4.5p per min plus your phone company’s access charge.

Ticket prices • All ticket prices listed in this brochure and elsewhere are subject to change at any time. • In response to demand, we may adapt prices, seating areas and discounting. Concessions & discounts These are generally offered on the top three price bands for selected performances, subject to availability. Sometimes we may restrict or limit allocations to specific seating areas and these may be withdrawn at any time. Please bring valid ID. We can only apply one discount per ticket. Our range includes: • Patrons aged 18 & under, and 60+ • Full-time students • Memberships: Friends, Patrons and First Night • Claimants, Passport To Leisure • Groups of 8+ or 10+ upwards • Schools and Youth Groups • Patrons with access or disability requirements • Occasional early bird discounts Donations When booking tickets, please consider making a small donation to support Hippodrome Creative. This helps us continue expanding our community projects, access initiatives, and education work. Donations may be eligible for Gift Aid at no extra cost to you. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our regular performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of audio-described, captioned or signed performances, please see pages 44 & 45. Concessions vary. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call 0844 338 5000 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged regularly. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Centre studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant and StageSide on Thorp Street are also fully accessible.
