Access for everyone
Join us in the streets and squares around the theatre to experience the very best in free live theatre events in Summer in Southside. Last Summer thousands of people witnessed free dance, circus, theatre and music – and next Summer you can be part of the excitement too. In the Autumn, look out for the return of our interactive lighting weekend called Illuminate - with installations, projections on the buildings of Southside, performances and more.
We’re bringing creativity to the curriculum for schools and colleges in the work we do across the Midlands, inspiring young people through theatre, workshops and performances. Our popular holiday and Young Carers workshops are set to expand and we’ll be staging Curtain-Raiser performances with dance students. Watch out for pre- and post-show talks and extra events to enhance your next visit.
Our assisted performances for patrons who are visually or hearing impaired are highly valued by everlarger audiences, and are part of our continued commitment to access for all. See p38 for full listings. Our first ‘Relaxed Performance’ of pantomime in January will be a great introduction to theatre for children on the autistic spectrum or with learning disabilities.

WELCOME Chances are you already know that Birmingham Hippodrome presents the widest range of outstanding international performance on one of the best stages in the world. What’s less well known is the growing numbers of audiences and participants for our Creative Programmes - all part of the Hippodrome Plus activity described opposite. In schools and colleges across the region, artists and performers, musicians and dancers are working with young people, adding a little extra to the curriculum, boosting confidence and building exciting links. Our work is inspirational, and our long-standing relationships with Special Educational Needs units makes a lasting and valuable impact. Our Access Forum (made up of staff, patrons and disability agencies) helps us promote our provision for audiences who need assistance. We invest to ensure the venue is fully accessible and see huge take-up for our audio-described, sign-language interpreted and captioned performances. We’re hoping this will grow in future. Have you enjoyed one of our FREE performances? Often these take place outdoors when Southside, our Hurst Street district, comes alive during the summer months. We want your experience to be fun, fascinating and memorable so you’ll linger for longer and keep coming back for more. When you buy a ticket for any performance at Birmingham Hippodrome, you’ll have the chance to make a donation to support these projects so everyone can benefit. Every donation made is doubled as a result of match funding from the Arts Council’s Catalyst programme, and we could reclaim tax via Gift Aid at no extra cost to you. We hope you, your friends and family enjoy all your visits to Birmingham Hippodrome in 2014, and thank you in advance for your support. Mayhem and misrule in three witty classics from John Cranko, George Balanchine and Kenneth MacMillan.
A stripped-back theatre bursts into life as dancers in brilliantly coloured costumes gather for a dance competition, spanning the dazzling, the witty and the touching, as each dancer at the competition takes their turn. One of MacMillan’s best-loved creations, Elite Syncopations is certain to leave you smiling.
In Card Game, the sly Joker banishes the proud Queen, the Two, Three, Four, Five and Six strike a straight flush, and little Two of “Moments of inspired imagery” THE GUARDIAN ON CARD GAME Diamonds tries to spoil everyone’s fun. Created by great ballet choreographer Balanchine for the musical On Your Toes!, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue is a crazy 1930s comedy, its humour and vitality providing sparkling entertainment. Now, the company unites with remarkable young talent from the West Midlands in an extraordinary adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies. As the schoolboys find themselves abandoned in a deserted theatre, Golding’s legendary characters are brought to life with raw energy, emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui collaborates with an incredibly talented cast of Argentinean dancers and live musicians to create a show that brings his own unique style to the deeply rooted Argentinian culture of tango. Taking the idea of a milonga as its starting point, those social dance-evenings held in intimate late night bars in Buenos Aires, Cherkaoui draws on traditional influences and adds a modern twist using two contemporary dancers.

“A precious work” THE FINANCIAL TIMES ON DANTE SONATA
Based on Edith Sitwell’s deliciously nonsensical poetry, Façade embraces the fun of it all with whole-hearted abandon. Enjoy a break from the sanity of everyday life with this series of delightful characters.
Three early works from the founder choreographer of the Royal Ballet Companies, Frederick Ashton.
‘A jaunty treat... guaranteed to please’ Dante Sonata is a simple and poignant piece, created at the height of World War II but which still resonates today. The elegant Children of Light battle the serpentine Children of Darkness to a virtuoso score by Franz Liszt. Created in 1933, Les Rendezvous is a gentle piece in which friends and acquaintances dance together in a park, showcasing each dancer’s skills in a series of solos, pas de deux and ensemble dances.

“Unmissable” THE SUNDAY EXPRESS
Funny, tender and true, this lovely ballet of rural bliss will put a spectacular spring in your step. When country beauty Lise falls in love with farm lad Colas, she’s about to upset the apple cart. Her mother, Widow Simone, would much rather she marry Alain, the son of a pompous and wealthy vineyard owner, even though he is somewhat dim-witted and the proud possessor of two left feet. Enjoy watching this merry crew try to meet their heart’s desires with predictably hilarious results. Ever popular because of its wit, passion
and simple, engaging story, La Fille mal gardée remains a favourite for all the family. Originally created by Frederick Ashton in 1960, this charming ballet was an instant hit.

WED 18 - SAT 21 JUN Is Nabucco, King of Babylon, a god or a madman? Verdi’s Nabucco, best known for the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, is the operatic equivalent of a 1950s biblical Hollywood epic with its soaring, rousing score. This new production set right now has the WNO Chorus at its heart and a cast including tenor Wynne Evans. When you listen to Moses und Aron, you will hear a soundworld so unique, so urgent that you might be forgiven for thinking it has come down from heaven itself. Seize this rare opportunity to experience Schoenberg’s extraordinary re-telling of the story of Moses and the ten commandments. Dare you enter the House of Usher? Opera can be as scary as the best horror cinema as this double bill of operas
inspired by Poe’s classic tale proves. Step into the House of Usher but look out behind you. £10 - £30 NABUCCO £16 - £48 (Ticket prices subject to change, 5% transaction charge, plus £1 postage)

BILL KENWRIGHT presents
MON 13 - SAT 25 OCT “ A triumphant evening... Unmissable and unbeatable” THE SPECTATOR
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production recently surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.
It has been affectionately christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” Jack Tinker, Daily Mail.
