“Nobody but me is gonna change my story. Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.” So says Matilda, everyone’s favourite stagey schoolgirl, who graces our front cover and will be with us through the summer. I wholeheartedly agree. And looking through our programme, I can see her words apply to quite a few of our forthcoming shows. The Full Monty and the new musical adaption of Calendar Girls certainly have some errant similarities; BRB’s La Fille mal gardée is usually translated as The Wayward Daughter; in our Patrick Studio there’s Mischief Movie Night, from the original team behind The Play That Goes Wrong. And while, despite its title, Kinky Boots proves to be not at all naughty, it’s a story about making a change, filled with heart, laughter and humanity. Either side of our summer blockbuster Matilda are some musicals never before seen at the Hippodrome. The première season of An Officer and a Gentlemen will take you back to the 80s, whilst the award-winning Titanic The Musical, on its first regional voyage in the UK, tells the famous story from the perspective of real travellers. Taj Express is Bollywood at its best - crazy, colourful and high energy, featuring songs of Slumdog Millionaire’s A. R. Rahman. I didn’t realise I knew so many until I saw this show in London last year.

Our new series of Creative Conversations (p8) also starts this summer, so please join us for some stimulating discourse and a two-course lunch led by Mishal Husain, Sathnam Sanghera and Rosie Millard. Too early to mention Christmas? Maybe. But Tall Stories return to our Patrick Studio with Emily Brown and the Thing, and over 40,000 panto tickets have already been scooped up... so maybe not. Titanic The Musical In the final hours of 14 April 1912 the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and ‘the unsinkable ship’ slowly sank. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century. 1,517 men, women and children lost their lives. Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own. All innocently unaware of the fate awaiting them, the Third Class immigrants dream of a better life in America, the Second Class imagine they too can join the lifestyles of the rich and famous, whilst the millionaire Barons of the First Class anticipate legacies lasting forever.

With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone (Woman of the Year and 1776), the pair have collectively won an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award and three Tony® Awards. Polarity & Proximity Birmingham Royal Ballet’s summer mixed programme, includes In the Upper Room, one of American dance phenomenon Twyla Tharp’s most iconic ballets, and Kin., created for the Company by former Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer Alexander Whitley.

Alexander Whitley’s Kin. is an athletic, abstract piece danced to a pulsing, hypnotic score by Phil Kline. Kin celebrates the raw kinetics of dance, the virtuosity of ballet technique and the potential for movement to bring us together in different ways.

The line-up is completed with Embrace, a new ballet commissioned from choreographer George Williamson as part of Ballet Now. This unique five-year programme, run in conjunction with Sadler’s Wells and a consortium of industry leaders, will develop choreographers, composers and designers to create new and innovative works for the world stage.

Kin. and Embrace feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted for these performances by Jonathan Lo and Koen Kessels.

Quick-witted and even quicker footed, In the Upper Room is an exhilarating, athletic ballet in which dancers in sneakers and striking red pointe shoes dominate the stage with energy, flair and finesse.

War and Peace Prokofiev Based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel, the narrative of War and Peace follows the tribulations of Russian society as Napoleon edges closer to the country’s borders. The spirited Natasha and her betrothed Andrei find their young love is challenged by temptation, while Pierre, an idealistic nobleman, wants to change Russian life for the better. As their fates intertwine during the 1812 invasion they find their stories unfold during a time when Russian lives would change forever.

David Pountney’s new production will be as ambitious and epic in scale as the novel itself. The huge set, video projections and stunning costumes by Marie-Jeanne Lecca portray the grandeur of Russian society in the 1800s. WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus will conduct a unique performing version of the score, based on Katya Emrolaeva and Rita McAllister’s new critical edition of Prokofiev’s original, complete with opulent dances and arias, and stirring melodies.

Penniless and fearing she will soon die, Violetta agrees to leave Alfredo believing it is in his best interest. It is only when Germont hears that she is on her deathbed that he realises the error of his ways, and confesses all to Alfredo. But is it too late? The conflict of duty and thwarted love has made La traviata a favourite with opera audiences across the world. This classic production with sumptuous mid 19th-century costumes features some of Verdi’s most evocative music, including the Brindisi (the drinking song) - one of the best known melodies in opera.

The kind-hearted Angelina (Cinderella) is forced to scrub the floors by her wicked stepfather, while her ugly sisters prepare to go to the Prince’s grand ball at the palace. As she dreams of a better life she is visited by a mysterious old beggar man. He tells her she will go to the ball, and will also be rewarded for her kind heart. Will she live happily ever after? After payment, we’ll send e-tickets or post them to your registered card billing address. • We also take cheques payable to ‘Birmingham Hippodrome’. • Unfortunately we don’t accept SOLT Theatre Tokens, but you can buy and redeem our own Birmingham Hippodrome Gift Vouchers. A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, a 5% transaction charge (6% from 2 Jul 2018) may apply. This enables us to continue offering our own dedicated booking service without relying on agencies. • We won’t add this charge if you pay with cash in person for non-group bookings. • Transaction charges are not applicable on shows in the Patrick Studio. • As a benefit of membership, we also waive the transaction charge for Birmingham Hippodrome Friends tickets when a Friends discount applies. • Most discounted groups and schools prices quoted already include a transaction charge. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. Our official agent is Ticketmaster, with other agencies taking allocations of tickets from time to time. • For purchases eight days or more before a performance, we’ll add a postage charge from £1.50. No charge for e-tickets. • We have several 0844 telephone numbers. Calls cost 4.5p per min plus your phone company’s access charge. • From time to time we reserve the right to waive fees for selected performances.

Concessions & discounts These are generally offered on the top four price bands (except A+) for selected performances, subject to availability. Donations When booking tickets, please consider making a small donation to support Hippodrome Projects. This helps us continue expanding our community projects, access initiatives, and education work. Donations may be eligible for Gift Aid at no extra cost to you. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our main house performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet and pantomime, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). For specific family shows in our Patrick Studio, we will always indicate age guidance and any terms or prices regarding babes-in-arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or BSL interpreted performances, please see the foot of show pages or refer to the diary on pages 48/49. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. Please book your guide dog in with Ticket Sales in advance of your visit. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. For visitors with complex accessibility needs, a folding mobile hoist can be booked in advance by calling our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see page 30 for some tasty options). Please do not bring your own food and drink items into the venue.
