Fiona welcomes Robert Battle - Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater who performed with us in Sep 2016 to over 5300 people, including a free open rehearsal for schools.

I’ve long been a great believer in the power that arts and culture have to bring communities together, to create a more coherent society, and to help people view the world around them differently. And whatever your personal views on Brexit, Europe, US politics or even the Birmingham Christmas Markets, I am sure we can all agree on one thing: we are running the risk of becoming a dis-United Kingdom. Now more than ever, cultural organisations need to reach out across income, age, education and ethnic divides, to bring people together. Through 2017, we will be expanding our schools network, increasing our range of free and low cost activity, and opening our doors during the daytime to engage with the broadest community possible. Everyone’s welcome.

Although best known of course for the brilliant musicals, pantomime, opera and dance we present, that together make us the UK’s most popular single theatre, the Hippodrome is an unsubsidised charity, and needs your support. Any surplus from ticket sales, the bars, the restaurant and your donations goes directly to supporting the valuable work we do in bringing communities together through arts and culture. Three very different works rolled into one great evening, including Le Baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) which is one of my favourite short ballets.” Madam Butterfly and Miss Saigon “Not everyone will know that the tragic story of Miss Saigon is drawn from the opera Madam Butterfly. Listen to a live description of all the action with a discreet headset. Pre-show, enjoy a touch tour, so if you are visually impaired you’ll be able to familiarise yourself with the set and costumes for the performance ahead.

Similar to television subtitling – if you are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing you can watch the script unfold on a display board near the stage.

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance: Material Men redux

Material Men redux is a virtuoso piece for two dazzling performers of the Indian diaspora. Contrasts in style between Classical Indian dance and Hip-Hop, as well as a shared history rooted in colonial plantations, are the starting points for this absorbing dance work. Material Men redux is a dynamic exploration of rhythm and location as the dancers create new ways of belonging to each other and to the world around them. Material Men redux features a newly commissioned score by acclaimed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin including sound design by Leafcutter John. It is played live on stage by The Smith Quartet.

It’s back! Our annual FREE festival returns in May for its second year, celebrating all things Hip-Hop. Enjoy pop-up performances, spoken word, graffiti, workshops, battles and much, much more. For m¡longa, internationally celebrated choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, collaborates with an incredibly talented cast of 17 performers, uniting Argentinean tango dancers, contemporary dancers and live musicians to create a show that brings his own unique style to tango.

Milonga is the term for a tango dance party. Inspired by the late night milonga scene held in the intimate bars of Buenos Aires, Cherkaoui draws on traditional influences and adds a contemporary twist. The result is a seductive and fascinating exploration of tango for the 21st century.

Richard Strauss’ sumptuous opera offers comedy and poignant drama in equal measure. This bittersweet narrative focuses on the emotions of the characters, as we see the aristocratic Marschallin learn to accept the passing of time and give up her young lover to the beautiful, youthful Sophie.

The smash hit musical comedy Hairspray is coming to Birmingham with a production, guaranteed to have you dancing the night away! It’s Baltimore, 1962 where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way!

Acosta Danza - Debut Following an exceptional career as a ballet star, international dance icon Carlos Acosta launches his brand new company, Acosta Danza in the UK. Based in Havana, the company features the best dancers Cuba has to offer who have trained in both ballet and contemporary dance styles. They will perform new and existing pieces by Cuban choreographers who have rarely been seen outside the country, and commission new pieces from international choreographers who will take inspiration from their iconic nation.

For their first UK tour, in which Acosta himself makes a guest appearance, they will perform works by Cuban choreographer Marianela Boán, Spanish dance-maker Goyo Montero and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Co-produced with The Movement and Festspielhaus St Pölten.

Acosta Danza - Debut is part of The Movement, a dance producing partnership between Birmingham Hippodrome, The Lowry and Sadler’s Wells. Supported by Arts Council England, The Movement aims to nurture talent and bring large scale dance productions to even wider audiences.

Many bus routes pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, we add a 5% transaction charge. This covers administration costs and enables us to continue offering a dedicated booking service. • We won’t add this charge if you pay with cash in person for non-group bookings. • As a benefit of membership, we also waive the transaction charge for Birmingham Hippodrome Friends tickets when a Friends discount applies. • Most discounted groups and schools prices quoted already include a transaction charge. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our regular performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Pantomime is intended to entertain audiences of all ages with something for everyone. It includes lots of traditional laughs, slapstick fun, some scary moments and impressive effects, plus some cheeky innuendo which most audiences find goes over the heads of children. This production features a short 3D film with some ‘mild peril’. Parents should judge whether younger or more sensitive children would find this upsetting. Age guidance 5+, no under 3s admitted, and no babes in arms. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or signed performances, please see pages 6, 44 & 45.
