I’m writing this on the plane home from China, having just spent five days at the impressive Shanghai International Arts Festival. Alongside producers, venues, festivals and other arts investors from over 60 countries around the world, I was privileged to see many interesting shows and pitches. I hope this will lead to some major Chinese companies performing here for us all in future years. It’s always been Birmingham Hippodrome’s intention to amaze and delight audiences with international spectacle since our foundation as a theatre 120 years ago. Over the next 12 months, we’ll be celebrating that history, reflecting on the journey we’ve made to our current success, and unveiling some ambitious future plans. Dance remains at the heart of it all, suitably enough, as we open our new fully-funded Dance Hub roof extension later in 2019 (do take a look at progress on Thorp Street). The choreographers of our new Associate Companies - Rosie Kay, Sonia Sabri and Kate Prince - will be challenging us with celebratory pieces, and there’s a welcome return from the Cuban star Carlos Acosta. Thanks
to Matthew Bourne we’re spoilt with two visits by New Adventures (see pages 4 and 40), and for the first time outside London, you can be present for the live televised finals of BBC Young Dancer (p18). But that’s not all. Working with old friends and new, we’ll present our first mainstage co-production of The Color Purple, directed by the very exciting Tinuke Craig; and our first large-scale youth community musical, West Side Story comes to life in the summer - auditioning soon. Please join us as we celebrate 120 years, and share in the international spectaculars coming our way. Then, now, always... from anywhere and everywhere, we welcome you.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns with a fresh look for the 21st century. Retaining the iconic elements of the original production loved by millions around the world, Matthew Bourne and award-winning designers Lez Brotherston (Set & Costumes) and Paule Constable (Lighting) will create an exciting reimagining of the classic production. Thrilling, audacious, witty and emotive, this Swan Lake is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-deballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm.

The mysterious Queen of the Night coaxes Tamino to rescue her beautiful daughter Pamina from the grip of the evil enchanter Sarastro. With a magic flute and a set of magic bells for protection he sets off on his journey aided by Papageno, the bird-catcher. But as they overcome a series of challenges, it becomes apparent that all is not what it seems.
Love, power and politics collide in Un ballo in maschera – based on the real life assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden who was shot at a masked ball in 1792. Riccardo (Gustav) adores Amelia, but when her husband discovers their love affair, he plots against the king, leading to murder on the dancefloor. Gwyn Hughes Jones and Mary Elizabeth Williams lead the cast in this tale of deception, intrigue, love and revenge.

Roberto Devereux Donizetti Roberto Devereux has been accused of treason. In order to gain his freedom he simply has to present the ring his lover, Queen Elizabeth I, has bestowed upon him. But Devereux is secretly in love with Sara, who he refuses to renounce, leaving Elizabeth heartbroken and compelled to sign his death warrant. Roberto Devereux contains some of Donizetti’s most spine-tingling melodies including the emotional Vivi, in grato, a lei accanto performed by Elizabeth I as her world falls apart around her in a heart wrenching finale. Welsh National Opera’s critically-acclaimed production has a dramatic intensity and a striking design guaranteed to leave your heart racing.

Rosie Kay Dance Company In association with The British Army
The Worst Witch
A thrilling portrait of army life telling the stories of men and women serving on the front line.
The much-loved characters come to life on stage.
In 2008, choreographer Rosie Kay joined the 4th Battalion The Rifles, participating in full battle exercises and visiting the National Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. What came of these observations was the award-winning, five-star international hit 5 Soldiers.
Mildred Hubble was an ordinary girl who found herself in a school for witches.
Ten years on, Rosie Kay expands the work for the large stage with 10 Soldiers. Now a full Army squad, 10 Soldiers looks at life in 2019’s British Army including issues of equality and diversity. Charged with Kay’s trademark intense athletic dance theatre, 10 Soldiers explores how the human body - with both fragility and incredible inner strength - remains on the frontline of war. “War from a female perspective packs a punch... taut, visceral, compassionate”
Jealous Ethel Hallow is always out to spoil Mildred’s fun. Miss Hardbroom is opposed to all fun in general. And just as Mildred sparks some inevitable mayhem certain to upset them both, an old enemy returns with a plan for revenge that could threaten not just the academy, but the whole world. Featuring Jill Murphy’s beloved characters, this new action-packed stage adaptation features original songs, music, magic and a dose of Mildred’s unique brand of utter pandemonium! Written for the stage by Emma Reeves (Hetty Feather) and directed by Theresa Heskins (Around the World in 80 Days). Juliet & Romeo By Lost Dog
Photo: Zoe Manders
Discover the real story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well they lived at least. Now they are 40ish, constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy, this duet directed by Olivier Award-nominated Ben Duke, takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity.

Hobson’s Choice FREE Pre-Show Talk Fri 21 Jun, 6.30pm
When Hobson’s Choice was premiered at the Royal Opera House in 1989, David Bintley’s earthy comedy after Harold Brighouse’s play received a standing ovation the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the premiere of Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée in 1960. With one of those scores you can’t help but whistle, composed by Paul Reade composer of themes for The Antiques Roadshow and The Flumps, the ballet has remained hugely popular ever since. Join Birmingham Royal Ballet as they mark the end of David Bintley’s time as Director of the Company with this wonderful ballet that The Stage said “just radiates Bintley’s mischievous sense of fun and his great love of British dance”.
Don’t miss your chance to join feisty Maggie as she puts the world to rights, outsmarts her inebriated father, bags herself the perfect man and starts up her own business to boot, in what is without doubt a classic of our time. All performances feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted for these performances by Philip Ellis and Jonathan Lo.

Blood Brothers
ZooNation’s Some Like it Hip Hop
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.
ZooNation’s smash-hit sensation Some Like it Hip Hop thrilled audiences and critics when it opened in 2011, prompting five-star reviews and standing ovations with its infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent).
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.
With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution.
It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. “Exhilarating...one of the best musicals ever written” The Sunday Times
Written and directed by Kate Prince with original music and lyrics by DJ Walde and Josh Cohen.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you…
It’s easy to find us Main entrance address Hurst St, Southside, Birmingham, B5 4TB. We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233 (fees may apply). Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes and the West Midlands Metro pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. Please note Tickets are sold for the use of the buyer only (and his or her party) and are not for resale for commercial gain by the holder. We reserve the right to cancel tickets and refuse entry if this condition is breached.

A note on charges • We’re an unsubsidised charity, so if you pay by card, cheque or redeem our Gift Vouchers, a 6% transaction charge may apply. This enables us to continue offering our own dedicated booking service without relying on agencies. • We won’t add this charge if you pay with cash in person for non-group bookings. • Transaction charges are not applicable on shows in the Patrick Studio. • As a benefit of membership, we also waive the transaction charge for Birmingham Hippodrome Friends tickets when a Friends discount applies. • Most discounted groups and schools prices quoted already include a transaction charge. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. Our official agent is Ticketmaster, with other agencies taking allocations of tickets from time to time. • For purchases eight days or more before a performance, we’ll add a postage charge from £1.50. No charge for e-tickets. • We have several 0844 telephone numbers. Calls cost 4.5p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge. • From time to time we reserve the right to waive fees for selected performances. We may also limit availability of concession rate and discounted tickets. • Check online at birminghamhippodrome.com or call us on 0844 338 5000* for the most up to date prices. • Tickets for selected productions include a £1 building improvement levy retained by Birmingham Hippodrome.

Sometimes we may restrict or limit allocations to specific seating areas and these may be withdrawn at any time. Please bring valid ID. We can only apply one discount per ticket. Our range includes: • Patrons aged 18 & under, and 65+ • Full-time students • Memberships: Friends and Patrons • Patrons aged 16-24 (First Night rate) • Claimants, Passport To Leisure • Groups of 8+ or 10+ upwards • Schools and Youth Groups • Patrons with access or disability requirements • Occasional early booking discounts
Concessions & discounts These are generally offered on the top four price bands (except A+) for selected performances, subject to availability.
Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone. And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our main house performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet and pantomime, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). For specific family shows in our Patrick Studio, we will always indicate age guidance and any terms or prices regarding babes-in-arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe.
Toilet facilities To ensure everyone’s welcome at Birmingham Hippodrome, in common with an increasing number of public places, we’ve introduced gender-neutral toilets on Level 2. We’ve clearly marked which toilets have both cubicles and urinals, and which have cubicles only. Designated Male toilets and Female toilets are still available and easily accessible on all other floors. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see p2 for some tasty options). Enjoy your next visit! Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, changes may occur.
