NEWS BUSINESS SUPPORTS RELAXED START TO 2014! Led by a substantial donation from IMI plc, a string of city businesses supported our first ever Relaxed Performance at this year’s sensational pantomime. Around 800 people enjoyed this specially-adapted performance aimed at patrons with autism, a learning disability or sensory and communication disorder. IMI was the major corporate donor in our successful Big Give campaign which raised over £11,000 to help ensure that the foyer areas were transformed with special signage and break-out rooms including a soft play area and a sensory room featuring some wonderful interactive pieces including two passive bubble tubes.
Hippodrome was useful and very interesting meaning that we all got even more out of the experience”. Performance Partner, Wesleyan played their part by inviting a group of beneficiaries from Birmingham Children’s Hospital to enjoy the afternoon. If YOUR business wants to get involved in next year’s Relaxed Performance at Jack and the Beanstalk on 29 Jan 2015 call Judith on 0121 689 3082.
IMI’s Will Shaw said “The success of the Hippodrome’s Relaxed Performance is thoroughly deserved. It is very pleasing to know that IMI’s support has contributed to such a worthwhile cause and innovative event, and we are delighted that other businesses have chosen to follow suit.” Other corporate donors included Grant Thornton and Squire Sanders who attended a reception on the day to see at first hand the transformational impact an experience of this kind can have on sufferers and their families. Solicitors Irwin Mitchell were even more hands-on and sent a team of staff volunteers to work alongside the theatre’s Front of House team. They got into the spirit of the day by wearing sparkling glittery hats, welcoming families and handing out sensory toys to visitors. Irwin Mitchell volunteer Hayley Hill commented, “I was on a real ‘high’ at the end of the afternoon. Attending the training provided by the

We find there is a show to suit every taste and a level of formality to suit any occasion. It’s a great place to entertain and be entertained.” Calthorpe Estates

SPOTLIGHT SNAPSHOTS
BUSINESS APPLAUSE FOR CURTAIN RAISER Director Matthew Bourne joined Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Development Trust Chair Mark Smith, corporate patrons and city business representatives at a reception for this year’s Curtain Raiser and a performance of his iconic Swan Lake. Now in its fifth year the Curtain Raiser has established itself as one of the most exciting education projects in the Hippodrome Plus calendar. An all male line-up of student dancers from Birmingham Ormiston Academy, Stratford College and Walsall Academy stunned the packed house with an original piece of dance created by an all female line-up of young choreographers before the main show.
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
SWEATY SWANS, BIKING DANCERS & NETBALL BIBS Where else would you find such a combination? Only at Leading Ladies of course! Matthew Bourne Swan Lake cast members divulged some unusual rehearsal secrets to 70 guests at the first event of the year. That secret is netball bibs! In rehearsal the all male line-up of swans are referred to by number only and each wears a netballstyle bib as identification. Who knew?! To add to the excitement of the evening, Jonny Ollivier, Lead Swan’s unfortunate last-minute injury was Leading Ladies gain as he arrived, feathers unruffled but wearing biker boots, to join the conversation and strike a pose! Thank you to all our Leading Ladies who helped raise over £1700 in support of Hippodrome Plus.

L-R Hotel La Tour’s Adrian Colman joins Hippodrome’s Stuart Griffiths and Hotel La Tour Managing Director Jane Schofield on stage
Jane Schofield said: “The on-going partnership since 2013 with the Hippodrome has proved enormously successful for us and we are thrilled to be part of this very special event. Both businesses are part of the city’s incredible visitor offer and we are committed to being at the forefront of that positive story.” Hippodrome Chief Executive Stuart Griffiths added: “It’s great to be working with Jane and her team again. The generous support of Hotel La Tour means that we can achieve our aim of providing inspirational theatre experiences throughout the community. This will be the fifth time we have run this special event on our stage, with funds raised grossing nearly £400,000 since 2005 going directly to supporting the theatre.” The sponsor line-up also includes law firm Shakespeares who are generously sponsoring the live auction which, once again, is in the capable hands of CP Bigwood’s Rory Daly. Matthew Clark and Champagne Taittinger will ensure the evening gets off to a spectacularly fizzy start at the sponsored reception.
