We’re confident we can change your mind.
A note from our new Chief Executive I’m so looking forward to joining this great theatre in October and to getting to know our audiences, supporters and partners over the coming months. With my background at Leicester Curve, Wales Millennium Centre and Sydney Opera House, I’ve long admired the Hippodrome’s energy and vitality – as seen every year with the superb Pantomime!
The diversity across the programme and the theatre’s ambition to expand its creative output is something I’m relishing the opportunity to drive forward. In the shorter term, I can’t wait for Welsh National Opera’s Sweeney Todd and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Nutcracker, two of my favourite works.

Variations Triple Bill Join us as we celebrate Birmingham Royal Ballet’s 25 years in the city with three contrasting ballets that showcase the company’s extraordinary range: classical, abstract and characterfully English. Joyful and grand, Theme and Variations is George Balanchine’s love letter to classical Russian ballet, set to the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suite No.3. Abstract ballet Kin. by former Company dancer Alexander Whitley is an athletic piece danced to a pulsing, hypnotic score by Phil Kline. And Enigma Variations, an elegant and eccentric character ballet, is Frederick Ashton’s poignant depiction of Edward Elgar and his friends.

Orlando
Lovers of great Italian opera will savour every breath-taking aria, poignant duet and impassioned chorus. You will be swept away by Bellini’s fast-moving and highly emotional epic. Welsh National Opera’s new production brings this universal story of love, derailed by a social divide, to life by setting it, initially, in Northern Ireland in the 1970s. Elvira’s madness immerses her in another time of civil unrest – the English Civil War, complete with period costumes.
Very few composers understand the human condition as profoundly as Handel. Orlando doesn’t simply chart a man’s descent into, and recovery from, madness. It encapsulates what it means to be human. Through transcendentally beautiful music, Handel affirms that for there to be joy in our lives, there must also be pain.

You can’t afford to miss this rare opportunity to experience one of the masterpieces of Italian opera.
Harry Fehr’s acclaimed staging updates Handel’s original setting to a private hospital in wartime London. Sung in Italian with surtitles in English.

“A masterly haiku, which compresses all the emotion of a long, wordy play, into 40 minutes of glorious dance” The Daily Telegraph on The Royal Ballet dancing A Month in the Country
“A reduced Shakespeare that combines humour, virtuosity and tenderness” The Sunday Telegraph on The Dream
In this programme of one-act ballets, Birmingham Royal Ballet focuses on works by one of England’s most influential choreographers, Sir Frederick Ashton, and his deft hand at characterisation and narrative through dance. In The Dream, love gets out of hand for mortals and fairies alike in an elegant and witty distillation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Created in 1964 to mark Shakespeare’s birthday, The Dream kicks off Birmingham Royal Ballet’s year-long commemoration of 400 years since his death. Alongside it, A Month in the Country, inspired by Turgenev’s play, tells the story of a bored housewife, a charming young man and a dreaming girl. A poignant romantic tale.

2,241 lives were lost in bombing raids in Birmingham in the Second World War. This November the award winning arts organisation Metro-Boulot-Dodo will create an evocative and emotive illumination that will commemorate the Birmingham Blitz.
Look out for stunning interactive artworks and inspiring free creative workshops around Southside as part of this Autumn’s city-wide Family Arts Festival.
In November 1940, just five days after the Coventry attack, Birmingham suffered three nights of consecutive bombing. 800 people lost their lives, 2,345 people were injured and 20,000 civilians were made homeless. November 2015 will mark the 75th anniversary of this tragic event and Metro-Boulot-Dodo will create a poignant eye-catching illumination for the public to discover in a number of significant locations across the city of Birmingham.
Midlight is an art installation by British-Chinese artist Aowen Jin, which brings together local artists and residents to produce a series of technology-inspired artworks that highlight Southside’s diverse and vibrant community. During the festival you can preview a number of exciting artworks using innovative interactive materials – including art that changes depending on temperature, water or sound. Walk through a field of lights in a stunning and intimate fibre-optic installation that will change as you move around it.
The haunting sounds of the air raid sirens, along with the dreaded droning of the German Bombers will once again be heard over the city’s skies. Hidden in and around the illumination the public will have the chance to hear first-hand accounts of the Birmingham Blitz. Using archival photographs, newsreel footage and a wealth of Government Information posters, 2,241 Reasons To Remember promises to be a spectacular and dramatic illumination event which will ask the people of Birmingham to listen, to remember and to never forget. The Barber of Seville Rossini
“The WNO chorus is, without doubt, one of the finest among operatic choruses in the world today” The Public Reviews
The Barber of Seville should be available on the NHS. Upbeat and optimistic, Rossini’s sunniest creation is the perfect pick-me up. Its fantastic slapstick energy is destined to rub off on anyone who sees it. The pace is fast and never lets up from the start. Everyone is carried along by a whirlwind of crazy disguises, twists and turns and unlikely interventions. Opening with one of the best loved of all overtures, it’s full of wit and playfulness. Figaro lets us know he is society’s problem solver in the great comic aria, Largo al factotum. Rosina’s sparkling aria Una voce poco fa makes it very clear that she’s not someone you’d want to mess with.
Welsh National Opera have assembled an exceptional cast of comic performers including the peerless Andrew Shore as the greedy Doctor Bartolo. This is WNO’s first new production of The Barber of Seville for nearly 30 years. It is the perfect opportunity to bask in the warmth and sunniness of this ultimate feel-good opera with a sparkling new translation by Kelley Rourke. Sung in English with surtitles in English.

The Marriage of Figaro
Figaro Gets a Divorce
What makes us tick? Mozart and his librettist da Ponte understood this better than most great artists. In The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart allows us to eavesdrop into a day in the life of Count Almaviva’s household.
Was it really happy ever after for the Almaviva household? Has the distant thunder of the revolution in France turned into a storm from which they cannot escape?
Mozart
Over the course of the opera we get to see each character’s agendas, flaws, wit and strengths. We might also spot flashes of ourselves in each character. With sublime music and a huge sense of fun, The Marriage of Figaro, perhaps more than any work of art since, captures what it means to be alive. Sung in English with surtitles in English.

Welsh National Opera: Figaro Forever

Music by Elena Langer Libretto by David Pountney
David Pountney and Elena Langer answer these questions with an affectionate sequel to Mozart’s classic. The characters of The Marriage of Figaro are some of the best-loved in opera. They can feel like people we know, even friends. Figaro Gets a Divorce, therefore, is a one-off reunion, a chance to catch-up with these old friends. Sung in English with surtitles in English.

Cavalleria rusticana & Pagliacci Mascagni & Leoncavallo Welsh National Opera celebrates their 70th birthday with the double bill that started it all. Cav & Pag (as they are affectionately known) are as full-on and intense as Italian opera gets. Each opera packs in much high drama and powerful music in just over an hour. Cavalleria rusticana’s highlights include the glorious Easter Hymn and Intermezzo. Pagliacci features one of the greatest of all tenor arias, Vesti la giubba. The sumptuous period-set production features a recreation of a Sicilian village square. It is only fitting that the cast for these birthday performances includes some of Wales’s greatest opera talent. Everyone who enjoys the elegance and pageantry of opera will want to embrace Cav & Pag.

In Parenthesis
Iain Bell
In Parenthesis is young British composer Iain Bell’s adaptation of the epic poem by Welsh poet, writer and artist David Jones. Private John Ball and his comrades are posted to the Somme. In Mametz Wood they enter a strange realm – outside of time, dream-like but deadly. Rather than simply reporting the horrors of the Somme, In Parenthesis dares to offer hope. Even here amongst the destruction, a fragile flowering of regeneration and re-birth can be found. Bell’s beautiful score combines traditional Welsh song with moments of otherworldliness, terror, humour and transcendence. David Pountney’s period production is both an evocation and a commemoration of the events of the Somme.

And, as much as we love young children, they can sometimes be noisy or disruptive; they can also get bored or easily upset by special effects, and nobody wants that. Unless otherwise stated, we do not admit children under 3 to our regular performances. We advise 5+ for performances such as ballet, and other age guidance is occasionally offered (check when booking). Everyone admitted to the theatre needs to be in possession of a ticket, and under-16s must be accompanied by an adult at all times so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of audio-described, captioned or signed performances, please see pages 44 & 45. Concessions vary. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call 0844 338 5000 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. Signed performances, with seats close to the signer, are arranged regularly. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Centre studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant and StageSide on Thorp Street are also fully accessible. Enjoy your next visit!
