In April, it will be a full year since I moved to Birmingham. I can’t understate what an extraordinary time it is to be in the West Midlands, and it’s been an absolute joy to get to know the people, the area and the rich cultural offer. But in that time, nothing has beaten being in a packed Hippodrome auditorium, and speaking to audiences after about their experience with us.

Afterall, our mission is to provide those “goosebumps” moments through memorable and extraordinary experiences, and as I look through the diary, I cannot help but feel excited by what’s to come

The city of Birmingham takes centre stage throughout our dance offering as we welcome back the showcase of hip-hop dance theatre, Breakin’ Convention, part of our B-SIDE festival, including local acts Marshon Dance Company, Nathan Lafayette and O’Driscoll Collective Birmingham Royal Ballet will be staging the world premiere of Black Sabbath - The Ballet and Rambert are

Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby

Back by popular demand following sell-out performances here at the Hippodrome, jump on this second chance to see “the most immersive and intoxicating way to experience Knight’s now timeless story” (NME). Long-time fans of the TV show and audiences coming fresh to Peaky, have been united in enthusiasm for the “vigorous and vibrant performances from the entire cast” (The Times) where “you can never quite tell whether you’re at a dance show or a grungy rock gig” (The Telegraph).

Opening in the trenches of Flanders, a personal story unfolds in post-war industrial Birmingham as the Shelby family navigate the decisions that determine their fate and Tommy is intoxicated by a mysterious newcomer, Grace.

Written and adapted for the stage by Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight, with choreography and direction from Rambert’s Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer, this captivating show matches dazzling, athletic dance and stunning dramatisation from the full Rambert company with a live band, specially commissioned music by Roman GianArthur and iconic Peaky tracks from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Radiohead, Anna Calvi, The Last Shadow Puppets, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

A colourful host of endangered animals seek shelter from the storm in David Bintley’s ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café. Featuring a morris-dancing flea, a ballroom-dancing ram, a hoe-downing rat, a majestic zebra and many more, this is an “unforgettable” (Sunday Times), witty and enjoyable, yet bittersweet and poignant look at human impact on the world. All danced to Simon Jeffes’s delightful score, originally composed for the Penguin Café Orchestra.

The “quiet perfection” (The Guardian) of Apollo highlighted the genius of its creator, the then 24-year-old George Balanchine, and launched his lifelong partnership with the composer Igor Stravinsky. This most exquisite of ballets was regarded by Balanchine as his artistic coming of age. Its pared back elegance gives the perfect platform for the Company’s world-class dancers to shine.

Brilliant young Brazilian choreographer Juliano Nunes’s Interlinked was premiered in summer 2022 as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. Described as “stretching ballet’s mould” by The Guardian with a specially composed score by Australian composer Luke Howard, this beautifully abstract piece explores ideas of grace, beauty and harmony in ways that push the usual boundaries of classical dance.

Ainadamar

Fountain of Tears

Golijov

Ainadamar, Arabic for ‘Fountain of Tears’, is the ancient well near Granada where the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca - labelled by the Falangist militia as a ‘homosexual socialist’was brutally executed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War

Golijov’s twice-Grammy-winning opera reimagines Lorca’s life through a flashback of memories by his muse and collaborator, the actress Margarita Xirgu, now in her final moments in 1969 Uruguay, as she seeks to pass her generation’s hopes and passion on to her student, Nuria

Ainadamar promises a spine-tingling spectacle from the Olivier-winning star choreographer Deborah Colker (Rio 2016 Olympics Ceremony; Cirque du Soleil) in her much-anticipated operatic debut in the director’s seat

The result is a dazzling kaleidoscope of music, dance, and theatre where flamenco meets opera through traditional Spanish singing and sumptuous operatic numbers, all interspersed with rhythmic, sonic, and poetic outbursts

Edward Scissorhands

Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures

Matthew Bourne’s magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands has carved a place in the hearts of audiences worldwide since its premiere in 2005

Based on the classic Tim Burton movie and featuring the hauntingly beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and his New Adventures Company return to this witty, bittersweet story of an incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world

In a castle high on a hill lives Edward; a boy created by an eccentric inventor When his creator dies, he is left alone and unfinished with only scissors for hands until a kindly townswoman invites him to live with her suburban family Can Edward find his place in the well-meaning community which struggles to see past his curious appearance to the innocence and gentleness within?

“Enchanting. The perfect treat for all the family”
