Our 120th birthday year has already brought us so many successes, and shows just how far the Hippodrome has evolved over recent years, especially our charitable work. As of September our Hippodrome Education Network will expand to 30 schools, we now have three young companies meeting weekly, and our first ever main stage youth production is taking place late August, West Side Story. Having been around 120 years, we are committed to the ongoing role we play in enriching the cultural life of the region – Then, Now and Always. Autumn brings two return visits – Acosta Danza promises Carlos Acosta strutting his stuff in Rooster, then ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop will again wow audiences with its wit and energy. We welcome the first visit of South African choreographer Dada Masilo, presenting her high-speed and exhilarating take on Giselle, and Hippodrome Associate Rosie Kay’s brand new production Fantasia. Then onto the phenomenal Circus 1903, a spectacular production described as “The Greatest Showman meets War Horse”. Look out for free workshops, performances and circus acts as part of our open day on Sat 26 October. We are thrilled that our Christmas season of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker and our own pantomime Snow White continue to draw in families year after year. This year Matt Slack is joined by Lesley Joseph, Faye Brookes, Joe McElderry and more – a stellar cast to make us undoubtedly the fairest panto in all the land!
Photo: Fiona Allan with Matt Slack and Glenn Howells (Chair of Birmingham HIppodrome Theatre Trust) at our 120th Birthday Gala in June 2019.
The new year brings a dance-filled Spring – the return of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, BRB’s Swan Lake and the Birmingham debut of Message In A Bottle, a Hippodrome co-production choreographed by another Associate Kate Prince, featuring a soundtrack of Sting hits. Spring then heats up with a new production of Priscilla, We Will Rock You, the hit new show SIX leading to not one, but two Cameron Mackintosh blockbusters – three weeks only of Les Misérables, and then a summer run of Phantom of the Opera, which goes on sale in September. We are lucky to have such a committed, loyal and enthusiastic audience. Thank you for your support, and know that every visit you make to the theatre ensures we can maintain our charitable impact. It really does make a difference to our city and region.

Giselle Giselle stands alongside Coppélia and Swan Lake as one of the most celebrated 19th-century ballets. David Bintley and Galina Samsova’s exquisite production stays true to the spirit and steps of the original. Giselle and Loys are deeply in love, but Loys is really Count Albrecht and is betrothed to another. When Giselle discovers his secret, the heartbreak is too much to bear. Driven mad by despair, she takes her own life.

At night, a sorrowful Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, but he is in terrible danger. The bitter ghosts of jilted brides rise and condemn him to dance himself to death. MUSICAL ALL MAJOR AWA R D S
Blood Brothers Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.
The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers.
“Dazzling”
Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.
“Terrific”
It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).

Dada Masilo Giselle
ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company’s Some Like It Hip Hop
South Africa’s internationally renowned choreographer, Dada Masilo, presents her fearless re-imagining of the iconic classic, Giselle. Opening in a lively South African village, Masilo’s Giselle tells the story of a trusting peasant girl who is thrust into a world of betrayal and shame when her lover rejects her. Performing in the title role, Masilo brings her stunning high-speed style to the stage, fusing ballet, contemporary and traditional Tswana dance. Joined by an extraordinarily talented company of dancers and powered by a beautiful score by Philip Miller, combining classical strings with African percussion and voice, this is ballet, but not as you know it.
ZooNation’s smash-hit sensation thrilled audiences and critics when it opened in 2011, prompting an Olivier Award nomination and standing ovations with its infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). Written and directed by Sadler’s Wells and Birmingham Hippodrome Associate Kate Prince with original music by DJ Walde and Josh Cohen.

An Evening with Lenny Henry: Who Am I, Again?
Ben Elton
The legendary Lenny Henry is one of Britain’s best-known and celebrated comedians, with a career which spans cult stardom on children’s television to writer, radio DJ, TV presenter, co-founder of Comic Relief and awardwinning actor.
More than 30 years ago, Ben Elton exploded into the national consciousness hosting Channel 4’s ground-breaking Saturday Live.
In the first half of the evening, Lenny will take the audience through a jam session of funny and sad memories and stories. With his mother’s mantra of ‘H’integration’ echoing in his ears, Lenny will recount setting out on his rollercoaster ride of a career - but at every stage wondering: Am I good enough? Is this what they want? In part two, Lenny will be interviewed by friend, broadcaster and author Jon Canter, for further insights into his life and career, followed by questions from the audience. Come and enjoy these honest and tender stories, told with a glorious sense of humour and help Lenny figure out ‘Who Am I, Again?’
Now, after a 15 year absence, the Godfather of modern stand-up returns to the medium he did so much to define. Back on the road with an allnew stand-up show, Ben promises to try and make sense of a world which appears to have gone stark raving mad. As Ben says: “The last time I toured I was still smarter than my phone. Things have definitely taken a funny turn.” “Just give him a stage and a microphone and Ben Elton is the best. No contest” The Sunday Times

Rigoletto
The Cunning Little Vixen
Verdi
Janáček
The Duke can have any woman he wants, and lives a life of frivolity and corruption. Rigoletto, the Duke’s jester, ridicules the fathers and husbands of the women the Duke flirts with, who then set about seeking their vengeance against him. But Rigoletto has his own daughter’s honour to protect, and events unfold with unintended consequences.
One afternoon deep in the forest, the Forester stumbles across a young vixen, and takes her home as a pet for his family. But this playful creature has bigger plans and escapes to take on the world on her own terms. As her adventure unfolds, all the creatures of the forest come to life, in a tale that celebrates the circle of life.
Verdi wrote that Rigoletto was his best opera, and with its dramatic storyline and score – featuring the instantly recognisable La donna è mobile – it’s easy to see why it continues to be such an enduring favourite. This timely revival of WNO’s acclaimed production is set in the White House during the Kennedy era, and sees Mark S Doss (Tosca, Spring 2018) return to the Company in the title role.
Inspired by a newspaper comic strip, WNO’s colourful production is charming, funny and profound in equal measure. It reunites Director, David Pountney with WNO Music Director, Tomáš Hanus who conducts Janáček’s blend of folk-like music and sophisticated orchestrations, gloriously evoking the vibrancy of nature.

ACOSTA DANZA Rooster | Paysage, Soudain, la nuit | Faun International ballet superstar Carlos Acosta brings his critically acclaimed Cuban company to Birmingham Hippodrome ahead of his exciting appointment as Artistic Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet in January 2020. Acosta himself makes a guest appearance in the iconic Rooster choreographed by Christopher Bruce to music by the Rolling Stones. The company also perform works, Paysage, Soudain, la nuit by Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg and Satori, by breakthrough Cuban choreographer Raúl Reinoso. Inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky’s L’après midi d’un faune, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui completes the bill with masterpiece Faun, set to Debussy’s original score with additional music from Nitin Sawhney.
This Filthy World John Waters SHOUT Festival in association with Birmingham Hippodrome are beyond excited to bring a queer icon, a living legend, and the master of filth, John Waters to Birmingham for the very first time to celebrate 10 years of SHOUT in the city. John Waters’ one-man show is a ‘vaudeville’ act that celebrates the film career and obsessional tastes of the man William Burroughs once called ‘The Pope of Trash’. Focusing in on Waters’ early artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, and the extremes of the contemporary art world, this joyously devious evening elevates all that is trashy in life into a call to arms to ‘filth followers’ everywhere. “A raconteur of the first order”

Matthew Bourne / A New Adventures Production
The Red Shoes A sell-out before its world premiere tour opened in 2016, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant adaptation of the legendary film returns to Birmingham Hippodrome, having won two Olivier Awards and dazzled audiences and critics across the UK and the USA. The Red Shoes is a tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion. Based on the classic Powell and Pressburger film and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, and set to the achingly romantic music of goldenage Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann, The Red Shoes is orchestrated by Terry Davies, with
cinematic designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Paul Groothuis. The Red Shoes sold out its first visit to the Hippodrome and returned for an unprecedented second week due to phenomenal demand when it again smashed box office records. Early booking is highly recommended for the show’s much anticipated return.

Les vêpres siciliennes
Mozart
Verdi
It’s supposed to be the happiest day of Figaro and Susanna’s lives but will their wedding even go ahead? Through a series of twists and turns, The Marriage of Figaro will keep you guessing until the final scene, with Mozart’s sublime score brilliantly bringing the action to life.
Hélène seeks justice for her murdered brother, as revenge and revolution set the scene for Les vêpres siciliennes. As Hélène’s sweetheart Henri, prepares to destroy his killer, a dark secret is revealed. Among the confusion and betrayal, the sound of wedding bells ring out, signalling the massacre that will destroy them all.
WNO’s period-set production has all the ingredients of a classic opera. Elegant sets, opulent costumes and an exceptional ensemble cast combine to pay homage to one of the greatest comic operas of its time.
Based around true events which occurred in Sicily in 1282, Verdi’s grand opera features wonderful choruses and breath-taking arias, including the Bolero. In this striking new production the creative team behind La forza del destino and Un ballo in maschera reunite to complete WNO’s Verdi Trilogy.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you…
It’s easy to find us Main entrance address Hurst St, Southside, Birmingham, B5 4TB. We also have a public entrance on Thorp St. We are easy to find and have great connections to public transport and nearby car parks. The Arcadian Car Park (Bromsgrove St, B5 6NU) opposite our main entrance has disabled parking with access to street level. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233 (fees may apply). Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes and the West Midlands Metro pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks.
Please note Tickets are sold for the use of the buyer only (and his or her party) and are not for resale for commercial gain by the holder. We reserve the right to cancel tickets and refuse entry without refund if this condition is breached.

A note on ticket prices, discounts and charges • All ticket prices listed in this brochure and elsewhere are subject to change at any time. • In response to demand we may adapt prices, seating areas and discounting, and availability of concessions or discounts may be limited at our discretion. • Check online at birminghamhippodrome.com or call us on 0844 338 5000* for current prices. • Tickets for selected events may include a building improvement levy retained by Birmingham Hippodrome. • We are an unsubsidised charity and for some time have made an external transaction charge on tickets for selected performances. It has been possible for eligible bookers (e.g. group organisers, Friends, Corporate Partners etc) to pay a reduced transaction charge or have it waived as a benefit. In keeping with many venues and ticketing services, and with recent advice from Trading Standards, we are moving towards a new system whereby the published ticket price will include any share the Hippodrome agrees with touring producers. This is made clear wherever we publish prices. 46
Conditions of sale Full terms and conditions are available at birminghamhippodrome.com or you can call us on 0844 338 5000* and just ask one of our friendly team. Children We want our productions to be enjoyed by everyone, but very young children can get bored or easily upset by special effects. This is why, unless otherwise stated, we don’t admit children under 3 into our main house performances. See individual show pages or the website for more detailed age guidance. For family shows in our Patrick Studio, young children are welcome and we always indicate any terms or prices for babes in arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs a ticket. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or BSL interpreted performances, please see the show pages or refer to the diary on pages 48/49. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060 for further details. • Visually-impaired: Guide dogs are very welcome in the theatre and can be looked after by staff during performances. Should you require a seat close to entrances, please ask when booking. Please let us know when booking if you need any help. Please book your guide dog in with Ticket Sales in advance of your visit. • Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing: if you’d like a receiver, just ask at our cloakroom. We can arrange seats close to the signer or caption board for BSL interpreted and captioned performances. • Impaired mobility: Automatic doors and lifts are available for wheelchair users and we have wheelchair positions both in our main auditorium and Patrick Studio. We have accessible unisex and ambulant disabled toilets on all levels, plus low-level counter service. Circle Restaurant is also fully accessible. For visitors with complex accessibility needs, a folding mobile hoist can be booked in advance by calling our Access phone line on 0121 689 1060. Toilet facilities To ensure everyone’s welcome at Birmingham Hippodrome, in common with an increasing number of public places, we’ve introduced all gender toilets on Level 4. Designated Male toilets and Female toilets are still available and easily accessible on all other floors. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. We kindly request that only food and drink purchased from us is consumed on the premises (see p2 for some tasty options). Enjoy your next visit! Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, changes may occur.
• We will always endeavour to keep discounts as generous as possible so that no bookers are at a disadvantage. Discounts vary, cannot be combined nor applied retrospectively, and may be restricted or limited. They are generally available on presentation of valid ID, and our range includes: 18 and under or 65+, full-time students, selected Hippodrome memberships, benefits claimants, groups of 8+ or 10+ upwards, school and youth groups, those with access or disability needs, plus occasional early booking discounts or special offers. • There will be an overlap period for a few months in 2019/20 where tickets for some productions have an external charge and others have all charges included in the published price. • Charges vary with other agents selling on our behalf. We regularly use Ticketmaster and other well-known agents. You are advised to check their charges when booking. • We add a postage charge of £1.50 for purchases eight days or more before a performance. There is no charge for e-tickets. • We have several 0844 telephone numbers. *Calls cost 4.5p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge.
