Our 120th birthday year has already brought us so many successes, and shows just how far the Hippodrome has evolved over recent years, especially our charitable work. As of September our Hippodrome Education Network will expand to 30 schools, we now have three young companies meeting weekly, and our first ever main stage youth production is taking place late August, West Side Story. Having been around 120 years, we are committed to the ongoing role we play in enriching the cultural life of the region – Then, Now and Always. Autumn brings two return visits – Acosta Danza promises Carlos Acosta strutting his stuff in Rooster, then ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop will again wow audiences with its wit and energy. We welcome the first visit of South African choreographer Dada Masilo, presenting her high-speed and exhilarating take on Giselle, and Hippodrome Associate Rosie Kay’s brand new production Fantasia. Then onto the phenomenal Circus 1903, a spectacular production described as “The Greatest Showman meets War Horse”. Look out for free workshops, performances and circus acts as part of our open day on Sat 26 October. We are thrilled that our Christmas season of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker and our own pantomime Snow White continue to draw in families year after year. This year Matt Slack is joined by Lesley Joseph, Faye Brookes, Joe McElderry and more – a stellar cast to make us undoubtedly the fairest panto in all the land!

The new year brings a dance-filled Spring – the return of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, BRB’s Swan Lake and the Birmingham debut of Message In A Bottle, a Hippodrome co-production choreographed by another Associate Kate Prince, featuring a soundtrack of Sting hits. Spring then heats up with a new production of Priscilla, We Will Rock You, the hit new show SIX leading to not one, but two Cameron Mackintosh blockbusters – three weeks only of Les Misérables, and then a summer run of Phantom of the Opera, which goes on sale in September. We are lucky to have such a committed, loyal and enthusiastic audience. Thank you for your support, and know that every visit you make to the theatre ensures we can maintain our charitable impact. Romeo and Juliet Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet is a passionate and contemporary re-imagining of Shakespeare’s classic love story. Confined against their will by a society that seeks to divide, our two young lovers must follow their hearts as they risk everything to be together. Bursting with youth, vitality and Matthew Bourne’s trademark storytelling, the New Adventures company is joined by the West Midlands’ brightest young dance talent, with direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne, design by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable, sound by Paul Groothuis and new orchestrations of the Prokofiev score by Terry Davies, played live by the New Adventures Orchestra.

This new production of Romeo and Juliet joins the popular New Adventures repertoire which includes Swan Lake, Cinderella and The Red Shoes returning Feb 2020.

Autumn Mixed Bill A Brief Nostalgia | The Suit | Nine Sinatra Songs Birmingham Royal Ballet is proud to welcome Ballet Black, the multi awardwinning company dedicated to increasing diversity in ballet, to dance alongside them in this groundbreaking mixed bill. Ballet Black was founded and directed by Ballet Now Creative Consortium member, Cassa Pancho. The bill opens with A Brief Nostalgia, the latest Ballet Now commission from young choreographer and Queensland Ballet dancer Jack Lister and composer Tom Harrold. Second is Ballet Black’s The Suit, a powerful South African fable of love, destruction and oppression re-imagined by Cathy Marston in this critically acclaimed and National Dance Award-winning production. The bill will close with Twyla Tharp’s sizzling tribute to Old Blue Eyes, Nine Sinatra Songs.

Jack Lister’s A Brief Nostalgia will feature live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted for these performances by Martin Georgiev. Giselle Giselle stands alongside Coppélia and Swan Lake as one of the most celebrated 19th-century ballets. David Bintley and Galina Samsova’s exquisite production stays true to the spirit and steps of the original. Giselle and Loys are deeply in love, but Loys is really Count Albrecht and is betrothed to another. When Giselle discovers his secret, the heartbreak is too much to bear. Driven mad by despair, she takes her own life.

At night, a sorrowful Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, but he is in terrible danger. The bitter ghosts of jilted brides rise and condemn him to dance himself to death. ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company’s Some Like It Hip Hop

South Africa’s internationally renowned choreographer, Dada Masilo, presents her fearless re-imagining of the iconic classic, Giselle. Opening in a lively South African village, Masilo’s Giselle tells the story of a trusting peasant girl who is thrust into a world of betrayal and shame when her lover rejects her. Performing in the title role, Masilo brings her stunning high-speed style to the stage, fusing ballet, contemporary and traditional Tswana dance. Joined by an extraordinarily talented company of dancers and powered by a beautiful score by Philip Miller, combining classical strings with African percussion and voice, this is ballet, but not as you know it.

ZooNation’s smash-hit sensation thrilled audiences and critics when it opened in 2011, prompting an Olivier Award nomination and standing ovations with its infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). Written and directed by Sadler’s Wells and Birmingham Hippodrome Associate Kate Prince with original music by DJ Walde and Josh Cohen.

The legendary Lenny Henry is one of Britain’s best-known and celebrated comedians, with a career which spans cult stardom on children’s television to writer, radio DJ, TV presenter, co-founder of Comic Relief and awardwinning actor.

More than 30 years ago, Ben Elton exploded into the national consciousness hosting Channel 4’s ground-breaking Saturday Live.

In the first half of the evening, Lenny will take the audience through a jam session of funny and sad memories and stories. With his mother’s mantra of ‘H’integration’ echoing in his ears, Lenny will recount setting out on his rollercoaster ride of a career - but at every stage wondering: Am I good enough? The Duke can have any woman he wants, and lives a life of frivolity and corruption. Rigoletto, the Duke’s jester, ridicules the fathers and husbands of the women the Duke flirts with, who then set about seeking their vengeance against him. But Rigoletto has his own daughter’s honour to protect, and events unfold with unintended consequences.

One afternoon deep in the forest, the Forester stumbles across a young vixen, and takes her home as a pet for his family. But this playful creature has bigger plans and escapes to take on the world on her own terms. As her adventure unfolds, all the creatures of the forest come to life, in a tale that celebrates the circle of life.

Verdi wrote that Rigoletto was his best opera, and with its dramatic storyline and score – featuring the instantly recognisable La donna è mobile – it’s easy to see why it continues to be such an enduring favourite. This timely revival of WNO’s acclaimed production is set in the White House during the Kennedy era, and sees Mark S Doss (Tosca, Spring 2018) return to the Company in the title role.

Inspired by a newspaper comic strip, WNO’s colourful production is charming, funny and profound in equal measure. It reunites Director, David Pountney with WNO Music Director, Tomáš Hanus who conducts Janáček’s blend of folk-like music and sophisticated orchestrations, gloriously evoking the vibrancy of nature.

ACOSTA DANZA Rooster | Paysage, Soudain, la nuit | Faun International ballet superstar Carlos Acosta brings his critically acclaimed Cuban company to Birmingham Hippodrome ahead of his exciting appointment as Artistic Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet in January 2020. Acosta himself makes a guest appearance in the iconic Rooster choreographed by Christopher Bruce to music by the Rolling Stones. For family shows in our Patrick Studio, young children are welcome and we always indicate any terms or prices for babes in arms. Everyone admitted to the theatre needs a ticket. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult so we know they are safe. Access • Assisted Performances: for dates of relaxed, audiodescribed, captioned or BSL interpreted performances, please see the show pages or refer to the diary on pages 48/49. Toilet facilities To ensure everyone’s welcome at Birmingham Hippodrome, in common with an increasing number of public places, we’ve introduced all gender toilets on Level 4. Designated Male toilets and Female toilets are still available and easily accessible on all other floors. A note on food and drink We run all our catering services in-house, so when you eat or drink with us you are helping assist our artistic aims as an unsubsidised charitable trust. • We will always endeavour to keep discounts as generous as possible so that no bookers are at a disadvantage.
