Winter 2019/20 Unforgettable performance, powered by you birminghamhippodrome.com 0844 338 5000

Well what a year it’s been! I hope you’ll agree that Birmingham Hippodrome celebrated 120 years in style - from gala dinners to our family-themed circus open day, we have found many reasons to mark the occasion. One I’m particularly proud of is our first ever musical co-production, The Color Purple, which was recently nominated for a national award for best musical production of the year. But 2019 is not over yet, and as the nights get longer and the days colder, it’s time to get organised for Christmas: whether it’s seeing our award-winning panto, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker, or our saucy alternative, the musical parody Unfortunate. Make it a special night out with one of our hospitality packages, dinner in the Circle Restaurant, or book into our Qdos Lounge. Next year brings an unequalled line up of blockbusters: We Will Rock You, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and Mamma Mia! returning by popular demand to the Hippodrome, and for the very first time Lin-Manuel Miranda’s (Hamilton) cult cheerleading musical Bring It On, and the smash-hit SIX. Alongside, we continue our work producing and supporting the city’s festivals: Chinese New Year,

Verve Poetry Festival, Birmingham International Dance Festival, our own B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival, and BRB’s Curated by Carlos, marking the first season with Carlos Acosta at the artistic helm of the company. As a significant centre for dance, we present Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, Kate Prince’s Message In A Bottle - based on the songs of Sting, BRB’s Swan Lake and Don Quixote, and some ground-breaking contemporary dance throughout the year in our Patrick Studio. As we head into the season of giving, remember that Birmingham Hippodrome is a charity and that every pound you spend with us helps to ensure thousands of children and adults across the region enjoy life enhancing education and cultural activities. Last year we engaged 250,000 times through free and low cost cultural activity. We thank you for your ongoing support, so that we continue to bring culture to so many across the city and region.

Rob Beckett is back on tour with a brand new stand up show. It’s been a busy few years for the Mouth of the South and he’s coming to see you to fill you in and make you laugh.

Matthew Bourne / A New Adventures Production

The Red Shoes A sell-out before its world premiere tour opened in 2016, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant adaptation of the legendary film returns to Birmingham Hippodrome, having won two Olivier Awards and dazzled audiences and critics across the UK and the USA. The Red Shoes is a tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion. Based on the classic Powell and Pressburger film and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, and set to the achingly romantic music of goldenage Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann, The Red Shoes is orchestrated by Terry Davies, with

cinematic designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Paul Groothuis. The Red Shoes sold out its first visit to the Hippodrome and returned for an unprecedented second week due to phenomenal demand when it again smashed box office records. Early booking is highly recommended for the show’s much anticipated return.

Carmen

Les vêpres siciliennes

Bizet

Verdi

No-one can resist the charms of opera’s ultimate seductress Carmen. Carefree and spirited she is determined to keep her independence, so when she enchants the soldier, Don José who sacrifices his old life for her, she is unprepared for the events that will evolve. Bored, she turns her attention to the handsome Escamillo, and Don José’s jealousy erupts into a thrilling finale.

Hélène seeks justice for her murdered brother, as revenge and revolution set the scene for Les vêpres siciliennes. As Hélène’s sweetheart Henri prepares to destroy his killer, a dark secret is revealed. Among the confusion and betrayal, the sound of wedding bells ring out, signalling the massacre that will destroy them all.

Jo Davies’ new production, set in 1970 South America, will bring all the passion and drama expected of this iconic opera. Bizet’s alluring music, from the famous Toreador Song to Carmen’s provocative Habanera, exposes the emotion of the characters to create a tension that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Based around true events which occurred in Sicily in 1282, Verdi’s grand opera features wonderful choruses and breath-taking arias, including the Bolero. In this striking new production the creative team behind La forza del destino and Un ballo in maschera reunite to complete WNO’s Verdi Trilogy.

Wasteland In 1994, hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed. Wasteland, Gary Clarke’s sequel to Coal, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene. Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language, a community cast of singers, brass musicians, archive film and powerful rave soundtrack, Wasteland dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

Don Quixote

Class on Stage Sat 27 Jun 11.15am £10

Carlos Acosta’s stunning version of the dazzling, Cervantes-inspired comedy receives its first UK performances outside London. Based on Marius Petipa’s virtuoso ballet with music by Ludwig Minkus, Don Quixote introduces us to the eponymous knight himself, lovers Kitri and Basilio, and a host of supporting characters. As the Don sets out on a quest to track down his true love, he finds himself embroiled in an unlikely adventure of love and dreams. Renowned for its virtuoso pas de deux, this vivid and exciting production will bring a refreshing taste of Spain to Birmingham Hippodrome, on its first ever UK performance outside of the Royal Opera House.

The Phantom of the Opera The brilliant original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is coming to Birmingham Hippodrome. Now in its 34th phenomenal year in the West End, The Phantom of the Opera is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group Ltd, it promises to be the unmissable event of the summer. The romantic, haunting and soaring score includes Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade and the iconic title song.

The production tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide. The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most successful musicals in history playing to over 145 million people in 41 countries and 183 cities in 17 languages. It has won more than 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards.
