A new chapter for Birmingham Hippodrome Fiona Allan has joined Birmingham Hippodrome as Chief Executive. She picked up the reins in October from outgoing CEO Stuart Griffiths. Fiona has joined us following her time as CEO of Curve theatre in Leicester. A native Australian, her career started at Sydney Opera House where she was head of programming before being appointed chief executive of Sydney Film Festival. Fiona said: “I could not be more thrilled to be joining the brilliant team at Birmingham Hippodrome at this exciting moment in the venue’s journey. It’s a nationally acclaimed organisation with infinite potential. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to be part of its, and Birmingham’s, future.” New Hippodrome Chief Executive Fiona Allan Development Trustee Andy Hammond, artist Aowen Jin, Hippodrome’s Fiona Allan and Development Trust Chair Martin Guest attend the preview of Hippodrome CREATIVE’s Midlight

Dear Supporters We hope you enjoy reading your personal copy of Supporter Spotlight keeping you in touch with the progress of all our work beyond the main stage and providing an insight into future plans. What a year 2016 promises to be! With new Chief Executive Fiona Allan now in post, Hippodrome CREATIVE will be reaching out to an even wider range of communities in the city. And we couldn’t do it without your help – thank you for your ongoing support. Our Heritage Project benefitted from your generous donations during The Big Give Christmas Challenge. Later this year you will be able to discover firsthand more about the history of the theatre ‘where everyone goes’ using the digital Touch Table which these funds are helping to purchase. We also turned back the clocks in our 2,241Reasons to Remember project to commemorate the tragic loss of life during the Birmingham Blitz. School pupils across the city made brick-shaped lanterns which formed part of the poignant installation which attracted crowds, including survivors, over the three day event. The front cover and pictures inside tell the story... The Development team is gearing up for the Gala on the Main Stage in May. It’s our spectacular, flagship fundraising event which takes place every two years. We’re delighted to announce Genting Hotel as our final evening sponsor and look forward to working with them to raise funds for Hippodrome CREATIVE on the night. Remember there’s much more to Birmingham Hippodrome than meets the eye. We love innovative partnerships and the unexpected and hope you do too. Join us at a future fundraising event to help create some of the city’s most inspiring education, access and outdoor arts work.

OUTDOOR ARTS IN SOUTHSIDE with FREE performances & workshops We’re delighted that July 2016 will see another return to our longrunning free outdoor performance festival in our neighbourhood Southside Business Improvement District (BID). The fantastic news is that Lookers Vauxhall have come on board as a new first-time sponsor to support a weekend of international acts wowing family audiences. There’ll be lots of opportunities to get involved, have a go and enjoy the summer holidays.

CREATIVE

As part of their commitment to Hippodrome CREATIVE Lookers Vauxhall will be providing workshops in schools local to their dealerships in Selly Oak, Star City and Yardley. In addition we’ll be organising workshops with other local schools and groups in the run up to this fun weekend. Lookers Operations Manager Alan Collins said “We’re delighted to embark on a new partnership with the Hippodrome. Sponsorship and workshops in local schools are a great way to feed into some exciting and rewarding projects for young people in the city.” Hippodrome Director of Creative Programmes Graham Callister said “We are very grateful to Lookers for this tremendous support and look forward to an exciting partnership in 2016.” Look out for confirmed dates shortly and see you on the streets of Southside in 2016!

Curtain Raiser Returns!

Access Under The Spotlight

In the sixth year of our partnership with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, we are delighted to announce the return of our Curtain Raiser project sponsored in 2016 by Tilney Bestinvest.

Birmingham Hippodrome has long championed access for all theatre goers. Through our many assisted performances, a well-respected Access Forum, a regular symposium, and our annual Relaxed Performance at pantomime, we are committed to making the magic of the live theatre experience open to everyone. In Spring 2016 we are thrilled to be hosting two national access conferences:

This once in a lifetime opportunity offers young local dancers and choreographers aged 7-18 the chance to create an original piece of work and perform on our main stage. The youngsters will be working with Joe Walkling of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures company and professional Birmingham choreographer Clare Palethorpe. The Curtain Raiser is highly commended by Matthew Bourne himself, who is a great supporter of developing and showcasing new skills. Representatives from Tilney Bestinvest will be following the creation of the Curtain Raiser closely, meeting dancers and choreographers along the way at rehearsals. On the Curtain Raiser night, Thu 11 Feb, Miles Robinson and his team at Tilney Bestinvest will be hosting a special client event. He said “We’re delighted to be supporting the Curtain Raiser which reinforces our ongoing relationship with Birmingham Hippodrome as a Performance Partner.” There’s still time for you to book your Curtain Raiser and Sleeping Beauty tickets. Look out for some ‘Little Beauties’ popping up in our foyers.

Is That All There Is? 9 & 10 March 2016 How do young people with learning disabilities access and enjoy the arts? With nationally renowned speakers and a festival of inclusive work, Is That All There Is? will challenge the notion of disability access and participation. The event will be open to the arts sector and the general public. Call our Box Office on 0844 335 8000 to book your place.

Growing Audiences For Audio Description 14 March 2016 Hosted in partnership with the RNIB and the Audio Description Association, this conference will explore access to audio described performances, and the barriers to attending. It promises to be a lively debate focused on practical solutions for theatres all over the UK. audiodescription.co.uk Miles Robinson from Tilney Bestinvest is delighted to be sponsoring Curtain Raiser 2016

We’re always looking for new donors and supporters of our access work: we’d love to hear from you!

We particularly enjoyed your Midlight installation and will be sure to check it out again in public spaces.

Unlocking over 100 years of Hippodrome History The Hippodrome Heritage project is now well underway. Over 30 volunteers are working alongside archive specialists to uncover our hidden past. The project was launched with a bang in September, when we threw open our doors as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days. Over 600 people took part in heritage tours, workshops and talks, as well as donating heritage items and memories. We also hosted a special Afternoon Tea on our main stage. Over 80 Birmingham Hippodrome Friends and Patrons joined us at this special fundraising event, raising over £1,000 towards the project.

Every touch you had organised in detail was perfect – the food, china flowers and music were much appreciated.

Our Latest Donations and Discoveries Hippodrome Heritage is unearthing some fantastic new discoveries about this historic venue.

What part will you play?

Audience member Darren Broughton kindly got in touch with our heritage team to loan a beautiful book full of signed autographs from the stars of the stage. The book belonged to his parents, Bob and Connie, who met and worked at the Hippodrome in the 40’s and 50’s. From Laurel and Hardy to Morecambe and Wise, this fascinating collection will now be scanned and added to our digital records. We recently interviewed Mo Ball, a former dancer who was with the famous Betty Fox Babes dance troupe. She generously donated this image of her as a child dancer. We’ve also had over 100 programmes donated from Mark Fox at the Really Useful Group plus a fantastic framed, signed photograph of Danny La Rue. Thank you Mark!

We’ve raised 80% of the £150,000 needed to deliver Hippodrome Heritage. Will you help us raise the final 20% to bring our history to life? You can donate by simply sending us a cheque, by calling the team on 0121 689 3067 or visiting birminghamhippodrome.com/heritage

Tell Us Your Memories Do you have a memory to share? We’re looking for oral history records to add to our collection and bring our theatre history to life.

Dig Out Your Memorabilia With over 100 years of theatre history, we have several gaps in our theatre archives. Do you have programmes, tickets, flyers and photographs from the 1970’s or earlier? Did you work or perform at the theatre? You can loan or donate your collection and help bring our history to life.

If you can help, call the Heritage team on 0121 689 1085 or email archive@ birminghamhippodrome.com

Thank you for the valuable insight into Development at the Hippodrome; I am positive that what I’ve learnt will translate to whatever role I find myself in in the future.

Mixing Business With Show Business

Leading Ladies:

Leading Ladies network offers first class networking and client entertaining in a creative arts venue and at carefully chosen partner venues. With over 100 participating companies Leading Ladies is one of the most popular (and glamorous!) networks of its kind in the city.

Season Opens At Opus Ann Tonks, Managing Director of Opus Group hosted the opening of the 2015/2016 season in style at popular Snowhill watering-hole Bar Opus. Ann Tonks and Suzanne Barnes of SBDP, who created the design vision behind the Opus group, described their experiences as business owners and the changing face of hospitality in the city over twenty years.

Sipping With Sipsmith Moving across town to the private bar on the 25th floor of The Cube, Briony Dixon from Sipsmith put Leading Ladies through their tasting paces with a lively presentation about the history of gin.

Participate And Commemorate Most recently sponsors, members and their guests found time to participate in the 2,241 Reasons to Remember Birmingham Blitz project by making lanterns to commemorate women and girls who died during the tragic three days of bombing in 1940. Spirits were lifted by a show-stopping performance from the ‘Trocks’, the NYC ballet boys with pointe shoes, mascara and exquisite comic timing.

Fun(d)Raising Thanks to the generosity of network sponsors, members, guests and prize partners, Leading Ladies has raised around £30,000 since its launch in 2011. These funds have helped contribute to the success of Hippodrome CREATIVE’s ambitious and varied projects which reach out to thousands of young people, families and community groups in the city. Looking ahead to 2016, Leading Ladies has an exciting challenge target to meet to support the theatre’s continued investment in Hippodrome CREATIVE in its work away from the Main Stage.

Isn’t it time you were on our guest list? For sponsorship and membership details call Judith on 0121 689 3082 or judithgreenburgh@birminghamhippodrome.com

We’re delighted to renew our partnership and support for One of a Kind. We are all big fans of the Hippodrome.

More Than Meets The Eye Our Unexpected Events & Partnerships The Hippodrome’s Development team likes nothing more than working with businesses of all sizes and from all sectors. When the sun shines, people just love to buy ice-cream Luxury Italian ice-cream brand Jo Delucci’s dazzling mobile cart went down a treat at Summer in Southside and Birmingham Weekender with sales benefitting Hippodrome CREATIVE. As a result of team Jo Delucci’s hard work, CEO Richard Pierce was able to present a fantastic £2,500 donation in person to Hippodrome Development Trust Chair, Martin Guest. Richard was inspired to get the brand involved with the Hippodrome having attended the popular Property for Kids BRENDAs awards

event which featured the theatre’s longstanding work with Young Carers. At the Young Carers end-of-residency sharing performance, Richard said “These young people are absolutely fantastic and deserve all the help we can offer. Jo Delucci’s is delighted to support Hippodrome CREATIVE.”

Raise a Glass, Raise a Laugh Local brewing company Purity has joined the theatre’s ranks of corporate supporters for a series of fundraising events. Over 80 guests enjoyed a Purity stocked bar, a street food reception and a night of comedy with Dara O Briain. During the reception Hippodrome Heritage volunteer Paul Goodhead presented ‘A Laugh a Decade’. The lively insight into the many famous names and comic faces who have appeared on our main stage over the generations raised a laugh among our guests.

The Purity bar went down a storm and the evening raised £1,000 for the Heritage Project. Look out for future events with Purity in 2016. Thank you Purity and Cheers! Paul Hannon, Purity Brewing Co

Patron Make Up Masterclass Birmingham Hippodrome Patrons got under the skin of the world famous Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo recently with a Make-Up Masterclass. With exclusive backstage access, 12 Patrons were taken through the make-up routine of ‘Trock’ Joshua Thake as he transformed into his female alter ego Eugenia Repelskii. Josh offered humorous insights into his makeup routine and tales from life on tour. Photos and autographs followed in this rare insight into a pre-performance make up routine. To gain access to similar exclusive events and get closer to the theatre you love, why not join our Individual Patrons Scheme? From as little as £25 a month.

Spotlight Nights We’ve been welcoming a new crowd of supporters to Birmingham Hippodrome this year through our regular Spotlight Nights. Invited guests get the chance to see something unexpected at the theatre, enjoy networking with peers and hear about our work through Hippodrome CREATIVE. Hosted by Development Trustee Nicola Fleet-Milne, Spotlight nights are a great chance to connect with the next generation of philanthropists as well as changing perceptions about what goes on at Birmingham Hippodrome. So far, Spotlight Night guests have got behind the scenes in the Patrick Centre at Beautiful Thing, enjoyed a laugh a minute at Alan Carr and witnessed the grisly goings-on of WNO’s Sweeny Todd. If you know someone who should be on our guest list, then let us know!

I just wanted to say a big thank you for last night, I really enjoyed myself.

Does Your Mamma Know?

2016 - Mamma Mia

We’re delighted to announce a major fundraising event in 2016 sponsored by Park Regis Hotel Birmingham. On Thu 30 Jun we invite our supporters to join us for an informal evening of dining and entertainment alongside the worldwide smash-hit musical Mamma Mia. Heart FM’s Ed James and BBC presenter Joanne Malin (pictured right) will be co-hosting a celebratory night as we re-create the Greek wedding banquet from the show. Guests can enjoy mezze sharing platters and a Mediterranean-themed supper. And for those with an appetite for Abba, the retro post-show party will step back in time to the 70’s and the show’s biggest hits. In a departure from our traditional round-table format, bookers have the freedom to choose the number of places they’d like to purchase. The new look format offers scope to invite a larger number of key clients. Or, you can simply team up with fellow Hippodrome supporters to enjoy the show and some trademark Hippodrome surprises. Play your part in helping to raise funds for Hippodrome CREATIVE and help make a difference to young people, families and community groups in Birmingham. Invite your guests NOW and don’t miss out on one of THE entertaining opportunities of 2016. Autumn Projects Hippodrome CREATIVE commissioned a very special project this autumn to commemorate the 2,241 lives lost in Birmingham during the blitz 75 years ago.

Audience member, Birmingham Blitz

This is needed in light of what’s going on in society today.

Working with Metro-Boulot-Dodo, the installation on the corner of St Martin’s Church in the Bullring rag market was an emotive and evocative multimedia memorial to help us remember, and to never forget. 600 children from eight primary schools helped create the 2,241 lanterns that formed part of the installation. Each schoolchild remembered a life lost by creating a luggage tag featuring the name and age of the person who perished. Children also experienced a drama and dance workshop, and were visited by a member of BARRAs (the Birmingham Air Raid Remembrance Association) to hear first-hand what it was like to live through the Blitz. The project culminated in the opening of the installation with an address from Reverend Canon Stewart Jones, followed by 25 special guests laying a lantern. The installation was then in situ from dusk each evening with rolling archival footage and sound archives bringing to life the sights and sounds of this terrifying period in Birmingham’s history.

Birmingham Blitz 75 years on Midlight

2,241 Reasons to Remember:

CREATIVE

The project was bought to life with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Limoges Trust and generous audience donations.

Birmingham has gone through a lot of changes and the memory is still alive beneath our feet.

Midlight

Audience member, Birmingham Blitz

Birmingham Hippodrome CREATIVE and renowned British-Chinese artist Aowen Jin presented a unique interactive light installation where visitors were the creators of the show. Our outdoor audiences were able to weave through a field of sparkling optical fibres that change colour by reacting to the sounds they made – each light responding uniquely to each person. Everyone enjoyed the fun element of being able to tweet a colour to @himidlight and watch the whole field change colour. It was a magical, ever-changing light show that encouraged creativity whatever age and embraced each person’s individuality. Some of the most special moments occurred when live performers, including when local violinist Yushan Li and pianist Vivi Yingrong Wang Wang performed alongside Midlight creating a dazzling and relaxing interaction between music, light and performer. Hippodrome CREATIVE’s Midlight installation by artist Aowen Jin

Look out in 2016 for more Hippodrome CREATIVE projects in which you and your family and friends can participate.

Thank you to everyone for the Afternoon Tea on the Stage. Looking through the memorabilia rekindled many happy memories.
