SHIRELANDS saturday schooL LaunchEs! We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new Saturday School at Shireland Collegiate Academy in Sandwell.

Professional actors, musicians and dancers will be working with children aged 6-18 to create their own theatre in a regular Saturday school. All sessions will be subsidised to ensure this low cost activity reaches young people in the local community. This Hippodrome CREATIVE project has been developed in partnership with the Shirelands Extended Schools Partnership. We can’t wait to see what the young people create!

What is a Relaxed Performance? it’s all about creating a welcoming, inclusive and relaxed environment for our audiences who may ﬁnd coming to the theatre overwhelming. and breathe. our relaxed performance programme is growing in popularity, with over 1,300 people attending our last event. These special events include: • creating a welcome ﬁlm and familiarisation pack prior to the performance. • changing elements of the show - removing loud bangs and lighting effects. • offering specialist training for staff and volunteers. • increasing the number of wheelchair spaces in the main auditorium. • Keeping the house lights up, and the auditorium doors open. • providing a sensory room, playroom and quiet spaces. • reducing the ticket price to ensure the performance is accessible. • serving free tea and coffee for carers, teachers and community group leaders. • Giving out sensory toys for use during the show. • providing caption boards, audio describers and signers for the show. We are thrilled to be expanding our programme in 2017/2018, offering at least four performances. This will ensure 5,000 people with sensory needs and complex disabilities get the chance to experience live theatre in a stress-free environment!

With Matthew Bourne’s eagerly anticipated ballet interpretation of the red shoes arriving at the hippodrome from 7-11 February here’s everything you need to know about the red shoes past and present. The inspiration

The dancers

A tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s astronomical aspirations, The Red Shoes is based on the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, and tells the story of Victoria Page, whose dreams of dancing become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

The role of Victoria will be created by New Adventure's star Ashley Shaw. Also playing the role are Cordelia Braithwaite and Katrina Lyndon (in her principal role debut). All three dancers are current stars of the acclaimed production Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty.

The film

Sam Archer returns to Bourne’s New Adventures company to play Svengali-like impresario Boris Lermentov, with the role shared by company favourite Chris Trenfield. Victoria Page’s romantic interest Julian Craster will be portrayed by Trenfield, Dominic North and rising dance star in Andrew Monaghan.

Matthew Bourne’s ballet takes inspiration from the Academyaward winning, 1948 British film about a ballet dancer, written, directed and produced by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The film employs the story within a story device, as a young ballerina joins an established ballet company and becomes the lead dancer in a new ballet called The Red Shoes. It starred Moira Shearer, Anton Walbrook and Marius Goring and features Robert Helpmann, Léonide Massine and Ludmilla Tchérina, renowned dancers from the ballet world. Famous fans include filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

The story As a young, unknown dancer Victoria Page is spotted by Boris Lermontov, the ruthless but charismatic impresario of the Ballet Lermontov. She is invited to dance with Ballet Lermontov in Paris & Monte Carlo. Along the way she falls for the young composer working on The Red Shoes Ballet, Julian Craster, and becomes trapped in a love triangle as Lermontov in turn becomes infatuated by Victoria.

The backstage team Legendary choreographer Matthew Bourne’s magical adaptation reunites the team who brought you New Adventures’ world-wide hit, Sleeping Beauty, with sumptuous designs by Lez Brotherston (set and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting) and Paul Groothuis (sound).

The music This world premiere is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerizing music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann - most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Martin Scorsese.

An innovative new digital dance film and sonic soundscape has been created by award-winning contemporary dance artist and choreographer Mickael ‘Marso’ riviere, British Institute of Radiology artist in residence Hugh Turvey and Birmingham-based Sound Artist Justin Wiggan in order to commemorate this important scientific breakthrough, which happened right here in Birmingham. The project was launched with a screening of the short film at the Hippodrome for VIP supporters, Trustees and project collaborators on Tue 8 Nov - World Radiography Day. The film was also displayed via Birmingham Hippodrome’s digital screens located in the Main Foyer and at partner venues Birmingham City University and Birmingham Children’s Hospital throughout November.

X-Ray: The Unknown Quantity - a new collaboration between Birmingham hippodrome, Birmingham city university and Birmingham children’s hospital was commissioned to coincide with the 120th anniversary of the ﬁrst medical X-ray, performed by Birmingham radiology pioneer Major John hall-Edwards.

Hippodrome CREATIVE wanted to commission a new artwork that would draw attention to hall-Edwards’ work and Birmingham’s role in this important medical breakthrough with worldwide implications. this new commission brought together leading local and national artists to combine hip-hop dance, visual, sound and sonic art with ﬁlm production skills to create an innovative new digital artwork that references the present day medical X-ray experience.

B-Side Hip-Hop Festival

Update this september saw us launch B-side – a free, three-day festival of all things hip-hop. programmed by local artists ‘Marso’ Riviere, Juice Aleen, Dance Nuvo and Break Mission, and produced by Birmingham Hippodrome and The Old Rep, over 5,000 people took part. The festival took place from 23 - 25 Sep and featured a range of outdoor ‘pop-up’ performances, spoken word, talks and graffiti artists alongside explosive street dance crews and b-boys/b-girls battling it out for prizes.

Behind the ‘seams’ An exclusive glimpse behind the ‘seams’ of Birmingham Royal Ballet to celebrate the world premiere of David Bintley’s magical new adaptation of The Tempest was hosted by BBC Presenter Joanne Malin. She was joined by shoe-master Michael Clifford and members of the costume team. Guests had the chance to get up-close to some exquisite show costumes. What tiny waistlines if only!

Viva The Mailbox! With the record-breaking Funny Girl landing at Birmingham hippodrome from 8-13 May we compare the early life and career of the original ‘Funny Girl’ Fanny Brice, with the actress who is bringing her to life on stage, sheridan smith. Fanny Brice Growing Up Fania Borach (1891-1951) aka Fanny Brice was the third of four children whose parents owned a chain of profitable bars in Newark, New Jersey. Her Hungarian émigré mother Rose managed the business while her father played cards and drank with his cronies. When her parents finally separated, Rose sold the business and moved with the children to Brooklyn, where she sold real estate. They lived in a series of swanky apartments and town houses. Despite her parents’ separation, it was a comfortable upbringing.

it was decided she should give up school in order to become an entertainer. At 16 she joined the chorus of Talk of New York, a revue by the musical comedy star George M.Cohan, only to be fired by Cohan shortly afterwards when he realised she couldn’t dance.

Follies favourite, and later starred in a CBS radio show for 11 years. Fanny played herself in The Great Ziegfeld (1936), and also appeared on screen as a nightclub singer in Be Yourself! (1930) and as Judy Garland’s Russian maid in Everybody Sing (1938).

In 1910 Fanny’s fortunes changed overnight when the impresario Florenz Ziegfeld spotted her on the bill of one of New York’s many burlesque houses. He offered her a job at $75 a week to appear in his Ziegfeld Follies. From 1916 onwards she became a top attraction in the Follies, earning $3,000 a week, equally adept at comedy skits, such as a sketch based on Swan Lake, and torch songs like My Man, also the title of her In 1915 Fanny won an amateur singing debut film in 1928. Her character “Baby contest aged 13 at Keeney’s Theatre, Brooklyn, a popular vaudeville venue. She Snooks” - a mischievous child who won five dollars singing a funny song and performed at adult parties - became a

Sheridan Smith was born in 1981 in Epworth, Lincolnshire, the only daughter of Marilyn and Colin, a popular country & western duo who performed as The Daltons on the northern club circuit. As a child Sheridan would be encouraged to get up on stage, wearing a little cowboy hat, and sing along with her parents.

Early Career Though she never went to drama school, Sheridan was a much-valued member of the National Youth Music Theatre from 1995 to 2001, travelling to New York with the company in Pendragon, and playing Tallulah, aged 16, in the stage version of Bugsy

there’s a lot more to life here than what happens on stage! our work takes us all over the region, working with schools and other community groups. recently we paid a visit to Four dwellings academy where students enjoyed an acting Masterclass with the cast of Willy russell’s ‘Blood Brothers’. Having surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, it’s hard to believe that Blood Brothers began life as a secondary school play in Liverpool back in 1983.

Thirty years later and, despite the show’s phenomenal success, the roots of Willy Russell’s musical are very much alive as we found out when the cast of Blood Brothers delivered an acting masterclass at Four Dwellings Academy in Quinton.

No strangers to the spotlight, students from the school’s Gifted and Talented programme worked with long-standing cast member Sean Jones before having the opportunity to pose their burning questions about the life of a professional actor!
