Dear Supporters Welcome to the latest edition of Supporter Spotlight packed full of news and updates on the exciting behindthe-scenes activity at Birmingham Hippodrome. What a start to the year! Our Chief Executive Stuart Griffiths received an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his services to the arts in Birmingham. Two of our flagship Hippodrome Plus projects – the Relaxed Performance at pantomime and the Curtain Raiser at Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands – have already taken place. In this issue enjoy reading about how your support helped to make it all happen, the impact on the participants and how we plan to build on their success. We’re delighted to welcome some new Hippodrome Plus faces: Graham Callister, Director of Creative Programmes, joins the theatre from Northamptonshire County Council and Rachael Griffin in the Development team is now responsible for the Individual Giving Programme and Trusts. The future projects we’re excited about include Nobody Nose supported by Birmingham City Council and Pinsent Masons, Spotlight Night at Beautiful Thing, a teambuilding workshop for Centresoft at Dirty Dancing and the pre-summer corporate dinner at Barnum. And, we’re digging into the past at the start of our major archive project... Remember, Hippodrome Plus means that everyone’s invited, so please share our story with your friends, family and business networks. Thank you!

A TRUSTEE’S WORK IS NEVER DONE Giving time up from their varied day jobs, a group of the city’s most senior names, under the leadership of PwC’s Mark Smith, form the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Development Trust (picture top left) which serves to offer advocacy and support for the theatre’s fundraising efforts. Since its creation the Development Trust has secured millions, most notably during the public appeal for the award-winning 1999-2001 redevelopment project, and subsequently in 2012 through the successful £1m Stage Appeal campaign. Currently the focus of all fundraising is Hippodrome Plus, the theatre’s ambitious and varied Education, Access and Outdoor programme. The range of Trustee involvement is just as varied as their professional backgrounds. Development Trust Chair Mark Smith takes up the story... “The variety of Trustee support for the theatre is second to none. Some, like me, are individual patrons. Others engage their teams through a corporate membership. There are those who host Patron events or tables at Gala Dinners and there are Trustee relationships that involve sponsorship of some of the theatre’s private hospitality suites. And not forgetting the enterprising initiative of the female Trustees who launched and have sponsored the Leading Ladies business network since August 2011.” Our thanks go to all past and present Development Trustees.

MIXING IT WITH THE MASTER Networking has never tasted better than when Leading Ladies enjoyed a seasonal cocktail journey in the capable hands of award-winning mixologist Robert Wood of The Edgbaston. Guests learned tricks of the trade in balancing spirits with mixers, syrups, locally-sourced tinctures and decorative touches.
The cocktail master-class forms part of the network’s stand-alone events. Watch out for exclusive Backstage Tours, Gin Blending and Musical Theatre workshops to get your taste-buds and feet tapping!
LEADING LADIES AT THE CUTTING EDGE
NEW ASSOCIATE SPONSOR – HIGHFIELD WELLNESS AND BEAUTY The latest addition to the network’s sponsorship line-up is the high-end spa located at of the city’s coolest addresses, Highfield Road Edgbaston.
Leading Ladies were at the cutting edge of dance when cast members of Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands joined guests to share backstage tales of this magical adaptation of Tim Burton’s classic film. Top of the sharp-edged topiary awards went to AVA Event Styling for a stunning display which included Edward Scissorhands themed cupcakes courtesy of @cakemodacakes – the talk of Twitter with even Matthew Bourne retweeting images of the stunning confectionary! Our thanks go to all guests and prize partners who helped raise over £1,000 for the Curtain Raiser.
Owner Mark Harvey, with Managers Laura Smith and Beth Rose joined guests for the event at Edward Scissorhands. Mark Harvey said “We’ve been searching for an established and fun networking group for our management team. Having looked at the ambitious work of Leading Ladies in support of Hippodrome Plus, the deal was done! The unique sponsorship benefits and client entertaining opportunities that our sponsorship of this fabulous network brings our growing business is invaluable.” Courtesy of Highfield Wellness and Beauty, all Leading Ladies members now enjoy a range of exclusive therapeutic treatment offers. Patrons
SCHEME
Our ever-popular Patrons scheme is a fantastic way to develop a closer relationship with the theatre and is growing all the time! We currently have over 70 Patrons at all levels of support and you’ll be sure to receive a warm welcome if you decide to join.
Retirement Beckons Robin Haselgrove was presented with a named seat as part of his retirement as Headteacher of Chad Vale primary school. Robin’s seat message contains his mantra of ‘Bottom. Chair. Connect.’ which may raise a wry smile from all teachers who have encouraged students not to rock on their chairs over the years! To celebrate, Robin visited the theatre to see his seat and join our meet and greet with the pantomime cast. Robin said: “It was such an unexpected and wonderful gift and one I will really enjoy as I enter my retirement.”
A Decade of Volunteering Hippodrome Volunteer Andy Harper celebrated 10 years supporting the theatre recently, and as a special birthday gift his wife Bridget surprised him with a seat. Andy began volunteering in 2004 and since then has been providing excellent customer service Front of House every Friday night. Andy’s seat inscription reads: “Andy Harper, Hippodrome Volunteer, Celebrating his love of musical theatre.” On visiting the auditorium for a quick picture, Andy regaled us with his experiences of volunteering over the past decade and shared his passion for customer service. Bridget joked that she’ll be watching shows in style from now on in Andy’s seat, whilst he works his volunteering shifts! Thank you for your amazing contribution Andy, what a great way to mark your commitment.
As a Patron you receive fantastic benefits and exclusive access to the theatre you love from as little as £25 a month. Win and Lola (pictured above) have been Patrons since 2008. Here's what they have to say about the scheme: “We both love the social patron gatherings and special offers, as well as having a close connection with the theatre.” We have a wide range of levels of support, as well as the opportunity to spread payments across the year. Benefits include a private ticket booking service, invitations to exclusive events and access to sold out shows. You’ll also be regularly acknowledged as supporters of the theatre in all key printed and online publications. We’re delighted to announce that for 2015 we’ve introduced a new level to our scheme - Hippodrome Circle Patrons - for supporters wishing to make an annual contribution of £3,000 or more. Our inner circle will have access to exclusive events, amongst other benefits including a named seat in the auditorium on joining.

RELAXED PERFORMANCE 2015 - AN ACCESSIBLE SUCCESS To start the year on a high note we threw open the theatre doors for a very special event – our second Relaxed Performance at familyfavourite pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. This specially-adapted version of our panto offered audiences with autism, learning disabilities and a range of complex individual needs the opportunity to spend an anxiety-free afternoon at the theatre. More than 1,100 children, young people and vulnerable adults with learning disabilities joined in – an increase of 37% more than the previous year.
“The relaxed performance was outstanding and it was such a relief to go to a show knowing that all our son’s needs and the needs of others were all catered for!” FIRST-TIME PARENT VISITOR TO RELAXED PERFORMANCE
Visitors included all 190 pupils from Dame Ellen Pinsent Special school, our resident One of A Kind Theatre company, adult community and individual family groups for whom it was their first-ever theatre visit. Prior to the performance every audience member was sent a companion guide and a speciallycreated film designed to prepare and reassure everyone about their visit to the theatre.

Every person deserves to go to events and feel comfortable which is what the relaxed performance does for this sensitive crowd. YOUTH GROUP LEADER
The Relaxed Performance was made possible by donations made through this year’s Big Give campaign via our Christmas Challenge. This included a matched donation from Candis, individual donations purchased alongside tickets, ongoing financial support from our Birmingham Hippodrome Patrons and grant-making Trusts. Supporters were welcomed to a special reception prior to the show.

Adaptations to the show included reducing loud noises and flashing lights, a soft play area and sensory room, and the provision of interactive fidget toys. Hippodrome staff and volunteers benefited from specialist training, plus additional foyer signage was displayed in order to provide an accessible and enjoyable theatre experience for all.

Irwin Mitchell’s team of volunteers at the Relaxed Performance
BUSINESS GETS RELAXED The local business community stamped its mark on this year’s Relaxed Performance. Leader of the pack was IMI plc’s major donation in the Big Give Campaign which helped to secure the scheme’s much sought after matchfunding. Sue Hall of IMI plc’s Charitable Appeals Committee said,
“IMI plc takes pride in its corporate responsibiltity activities. It is particularly satisfying to know that our donation has helped create an opportunity for local young people to experience the fun of pantomime and a anxiety-free visit to the theatre.”
‘‘
I loved the scary bits.I even kept my 3D glasses on!
’’
Notable among the range of corporate support for this flagship Hippodrome Plus project were donations from CP Bigwood and Squire Patton Boggs.
And this time round the Irwin Mitchell volunteers who attended specialist training alongside the Front of House team grew to an impressive team of seven! Irwin Mitchell Partner Chris Rawstron explains their involvement, “Supporting the specialised work
that the Hippodrome is doing with people with learning disabilities and autism resonates very much with Irwin Mitchell’s core values. We’re delighted to be involved in this way.” Sporting her Relaxed Performance sparkly trilby Irwin Mitchell Associate Solicitor and long-term volunteer Hayley Hill (pictured left) exclaimed, “It’s been a fantastic
experience. Training and working alongside the Hippodrome teams is very rewarding. We’ve learned so much as individuals and as a group. To see the smiling, happy faces on the day makes the effort more than worthwhile. We all go home on a high.”

CUTTING EDGE CURTAIN RAISER BRINGS THE HOUSE DOWN Talented young dancers aged 12-18 years from across the city graced the main stage (twice) to perform a special Curtain Raiser to full houses before performances of Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands. Participating dancers came from Birmingham Ormiston Academy, Stratford-upon-Avon College, Walsall College and, for the first time, Elmhurst School of Dance. The project, now in its sixth year, is a major collaboration between the Hippodrome’s Creative Learning team and Re:Bourne, the charitable arm of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures company. With families and friends in the audience the atmosphere in the auditorium was electric. Five of the talented young dancers also took on the role of choreographers and drew on the show’s family-based, character driven storyline. With tongues firmly in cheek the piece entitled Family Life wittily explored relationships in, among others, the aptly-named ‘Washengo’ and ‘Bling’ families. The Curtain Raiser series focuses on creating the next generation of dancers and choreographers, offering them expert tuition, as well as backstage experiences including stage make-up from trained practitioners. Helping shape the young dancers’ material were New Adventures dancer Paul Smethurst and local choreographer and dance artist, Clare Palethorpe. Inspired by Matthew Bourne’s personal encouragement and from other company members, our generous audiences raised over £1,500 at the bucket collections to be shared between the two companies – woop woop!

PRESERVING OUR HISTORY - BIRMINGHAM HIPPODROME ARCHIVES FROM TOWER OF VARIETIES TO PREMIER LYRIC THEATRE Over the next 18 months we’ll be delving into the theatre’s hidden corners and corridors as we embark on an exciting archive project. Our story began in 1899 as the Tower of Varieties and Circus and through re-invention and transformation we have been all number of things – a music hall, variety theatre and eclectic receiving house, as well as welcoming some of history’s greatest stars to our stage, from Laurel & Hardy to Lenny Henry. The heritage project will promote and share our important story through accessible, stimulating and rich interpretation, with the full collection being catalogued and made publically accessible via innovative touch tables and a new website. The archive project will culminate in an exciting Open Weekend in 2016. We are thrilled to have received a large grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to kick-start our fundraising. We are now seeking volunteers, supporters and funders to help bring this project to life.

OUT AND ‘ABOUT TOWN’ HIPPODROME PLUS COLLABORATES WITH IKON TO STUNNING VISUAL EFFECT When Hippodrome Plus goes out and about, it really goes to town and the About Town project, a partnership with the IKON Gallery as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, was no exception. About Town, an exhibition of international video art took place in Southside, our immediate neighbouring part of the city and a Business Improvement District (BID). Showcasing a wide variety of free night-screenings in unusual urban spaces by artists from the UK, this innovative collaboration featured a number of new commissions as well as work from established and criticallyacclaimed artists. Among the participating artists was former Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing whose Broad Street focussed its attention on Birmingham’s frenetic night-life. Hippodrome corporate partners Gallan Group hosted large-scale installations in its Hurst Street car park, which was transformed into a vast indoor landscape of moving imagery and ambient sound. Paul Garry of Gallan Group commented “As a neighbouring organisation, Gallan is delighted, along with the Gooch Estate, to help facilitate unique Hippodrome projects that promote Southside, and which encourage more visitors into this vibrant area of the city.” Meanwhile visitors to the Hippodrome were met by a flurry of foyer activity and what appeared to be stray cats drinking from bowls of milk laid down by Adel Abdessemed in his work Happiness in Mitte. Thank you to Arts Council England and Southside Business Improvement District for their support of About Town.
