Hundreds of people came to cheer on their duck and enjoy the stalls in the White Horse car park at the event, which raised £3969 for Birstall United Juniors Football Club. “This year was our most successful so far” said Charlotte Foy of the White Horse. “There was a great atmosphere and it was fantastic to see so many local people supporting such a worthwhile local community based team.” The duck race was started by Leicester City legend Ian Marshall. Over 2500 ducks were sold this year with cash prizes of £100, £50 and £25 as well as prizes donated by local businesses. For details of the winners go to www.bujfc.co.uk Phil Hughes of Birstall United Juniors said: “We are very grateful to the White Horse for choosing us as this year’s partners in the duck race. We would like to thank all our members and other villagers who either bought a duck or who turned up on the day to support the race and have fun at the many stalls in the car park. We are especially grateful to Ian Marshall for giving up his

We hope we have managed to raise the profile of the club within the village so that people realise what a fantastic group of volunteers we have working towards providing excellent sporting opportunities to the kids of our village.” The organisers would like to thank the businesses that sold ducks: Unique, J Michael, Nando’s, Krustys and those that donated prizes: Aromaspice, J Michael, Blue Moon, Leicester City FC, Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Park View Riding School and the Dining Room Restaurant.

New Centre nears completion wheelie bins CHARNWOOD RESIDENTS are to receive a second wheelie bin for recyclable waste. The new wheelie bins will be in addition to the existing black bins and will be used for glass, plastic, aluminium, steel cans, mixed paper and cardboard. The bins will replace the current purple sack and recycling boxes. They will be rolled out across the Borough over a six week period from September 5. The contract for transporting and sorting the 16,000 tonnes of mixed recyclable waste produced in the Borough each year has been awarded to Viridor. Charnwood is paid for the recyclable waste it collects and when the agreement with its previous contractor expired, the Council agreed a deal with Viridor that will generate an additional £2million of income over the next six years. The waste will be processed at Viridor’s facility in Kent and will be used to create new products and packaging. Councillor Hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “This new contract represents an excellent piece of business for both the Council and Viridor and means we can further boost our already excellent recycling service. “The new wheelie bins will provide a more convenient and cost-effective service and will make recycling even easier for our residents. “The additional income means we will be able to not only maintain but also enhance the frontline service we provide. This really is great news for the Council and illustrates how we are working smartly to get value for money for taxpayers.” The introduction of the new wheelie bins will not affect collection dates. The bins will be the standard 240 litre size.
A ‘TOPPING OUT’ ceremony has taken place to celebrate the construction of the £4.8million Palmer-Tomkinson Centre on the site of Longslade Community College. With the last beam now in place and the roof complete, the building is fully watertight and on course to be ready for both Post 16 and community use this summer. Local landowner, Charles Palmer-Tomkinson donated £1million towards the multi-purpose centre and was in attendance for the event. The ceremony, on May 19, provided the first opportunity to tour the facility. The event was also attended by Conservative MP for Charnwood, Stephen Dorrell, representatives from the County and District Council, and teachers from Longslade’s Performing Arts department. Centred around a large multi-purpose hall, with galleries along three sides, the building includes a large foyer/common room, drama studio, study studio, technology and media facilities. Performing Arts work areas, with a green room behind the stage area will enable all types of performances and events to take place in a professional environment. Liz Hall, Headteacher at Longslade Community College said: “This is a marvellous and exciting project which will provide fantastic facilities for our com-
munity and the College. We are very grateful to Charles PalmerTomkinson for his generous donation and to the YPLA for their support for this new building.” Willmott Dixon Operations Director Ed Reynolds said: “We are honoured to be inPics: the building’s entrance & reception volved with a project area & (left) the main auditorium which will no doubt alter build our relationships with the college the lives of not just the and the local residents, there will be students who learn here, many more celebrations to come.” but the community as a The project, which coincides with the whole. Park & NatWest DIY ride BIRSTALL’S NEW park and ride facility will open this July. The £5.5million scheme is a joint project between Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council. Funding for the facility has come from government grants and developers Jelson. They provided £250,000 as part of their section 106 agreement for Hallam Fields. The Birstall park and ride will have 1000 car parking spaces and will go in a loop from Birstall to Enderby via the city centre, stopping at St Margaret’s bus station, De Montfort University and Leicester Royal Infirmary. The fare will be £3 to the city centre. The Enderby service currently receives £200,000 a year of council subsidy and attracts 260 users a day. Once the service has been linked with Birstall, 1400 users will be needed for the service to pay for itself. The Council expects 200-300 users a day from Birstall by autumn 2011. The Council anticipated reaching the 1400 daily target by 2016 but now says that is unlikely. The Birstall site will have a ‘low energy’ terminal building using thermal heating, 4000 trees will be planted, 450 metres of hedgerow and 9500 shrubs. Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Tackling congestion is one of our main priorities and I’m pleased that by securing funding from the government and a developer, we can build this key project at no cost to the council taxpayer.” To find out more visit www.leics.gov.uk/leicester_park_ride

STAFF FROM the Birstall branch of the NatWest bank spent a day decorating a play room at a local pre-school. A team of six workers from the bank were volunteering their DIY skills at Acorn Under Fives, based at Highcliffe School. NatWest Customer Service Officer Parminder Tara said: “We wanted to do something for the community which had a lasting impact. It was fun and enjoyable to work as a team to offer the well needed service of redecorating the Acorns’ playgroup. We hope that the children, staff and parents will enjoy a fresher environment and we look forward to offering similar assistance in the future.” Jackie Bateman, Manager of Acorn

Under Fives, said: “Thank you to the members of staff from Natwest Bank for giving up their time to decorate the room where the children play. The room was in great need of decoration and the offer to help paint was greatly appreciated. The six members of staff worked really hard. The staff, children and par-
ents have commented on how wonderful the room looks and say the finished job is very professional.” To say thank you to the bank, the Acorn children made a special card for the members of staff and Parminder’s son Arundeep, who attends Acorn, presented it to his mum and her colleagues.

Parish Council notes Royal wedding parties in Birstall OUR PICTURES show some of the Royal Wedding celebrations in Birstall. Cliffe Road residents organised a street party (top left) and Birstall Twinning’s ‘Friends of Rixensart’ organised a fundraising event in the Queensgate Drive garden of Ann and Ian Bartram (left) complete with bunting, balloons, royal wedding music and a royal quiz. It was rounded off with a champagne toast to the royal couple. At Abbeyfield’s Grove House on Church Hill (top) residents and staff celebrated the day with a balloon race, with 180 balloons launched from the garden after residents had gathered round the TV to watch the wedding. “The oohs and aahs sounded and there were moments of reflection for weddings and vows long ago exchanged” said House Manager Jenny Fitzgerald. The day was completed with the traditional fish and chips, accompanied by a little fizzy wine to toast the newly married couple. The lucky balloon was found 85 miles away in Shrewsbury by Diana Bradshaw who will receive a prize in the post.
A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on May 16. Cllr Stuart Jones was elected Chairman of the Parish Council for the ensuing year and Cllr Patrick Cleere Vice-Chairman. The Council has received a proposal from Leicestershire County Council regarding the future maintenance of the sculpture at Birstall park and ride. It was agreed to defer the matter until further information has been obtained. The council has been attempting to source grant funding for its plans for youth facilities, but this has proved to be difficult in the current economic climate. It was agreed that the Council consider borrowing the money from the Public Works Loans Board for the planned projects : the Multi Use Game Area and skate park at School Lane and the extension to the youth café at the School Lane pavilion. Kathleen Grundy did not seek re-election in May and the Chairman and councillors expressed their thanks for her years of service as a Birstall Parish Councillor. It was agreed to spend £9694 on a new cricket roller as the existing prewar roller did not meet current health and safety standards.
Cadet’s Cubs’ trip to City award BIRSTALL CUBS and Beavers enjoyed a great day out at the Walkers Stadium watching Leicester City play their last game of the season against Ipswich. The day was all part of Leicester City’s family football programme. As the party from Birstall arrived at the ground Alan Birchenhall MBE was completing his charity run around the pitch to tremendous cheers from the boys. Leader Gerry Sessions said: “The action was non-stop with City going in at half time 3 nil up. Beavers and cubs took part in the half time parade, joining up with children from all over Leicester for a memorable walk around
the pitch in front of a 24,000 strong crowd. “Ipswich came back in the second half, but with the boys cheering and shouting at the tops of their voices, we roared City on to victory, finally winning 4-2. All the cubs had a great day at Leicester City, some of them visiting for the first time, but they all said it wouldn’t be the last time.”
A BIRSTALL ATC Cadet has been named as Sportswoman of the Year. Fourteen year old Sian LloydMcLear was competing in the annual Wing Athletics Championship at Saffron Lane sports stadium, where all 29 squadrons within the South and East Midlands Wing were represented. Sian took part in the long jump, 100m and 200m, breaking two records. Her times in the 100m and 200m were 12.84 seconds and 27.09 seconds Pic: Cdt Sian Lloyd-McLear with her trophy

A BLADDER scanner has been presented to the University Hospitals of Leicester thanks to the fundraising of Birstall BAGS.
THE POLICE are appealing for public help after a number of elctrical items were stolen during a burglary in Birstall. The incident took place some time between 11.30am and 4.30pm on Monday May 2 in Loughborough Road when a house was broken into and a number of items were stolen. Amongst the items stolen was a 32” Panasonic LCD television, a 42” Panasonic plasma television, a 20” Panasonic LCD television, a Panasonic stereo system, a Canon digital camera and a Sky TV box. Detective Constable Sukhvinder Obhi is investigating the incident, he said: “A number of large items were stolen during the incident and there’s a strong possibility that a vehicle may have been used to transport the goods. The house is situated on a busy road, I would appeal to commuters and passers-by who may have been in the Loughborough Road area on the afternoon of Monday May 2, which was a Bank Holiday, to contact us if they remember seeing anyone acting suspiciously. “We would also urge anyone who knows someone who has acquired items similar to the ones stolen or has been approached by someone selling them in suspicious circumstances to contact us.” Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 575 Sukhvinder Obhi on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 0575. The scanner, costing around £5500, enables nursing staff to scan a patient’s bladder to assess the quantity of urine held within the bladder and decide whether insertion of a urinary catheter is necessary. Prior to this type of mobile scanner being available, patients would have the catheter inserted as a precaution – the scanner will now mean unnecessary procedures can be avoided. CCTV unit tackles anti social behaviour A PORTABLE CCTV unit is helping the Police and Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) tackle antisocial behaviour problems in the village. The unit has been so successful, a second camera has now been purchased. Roy Rollings, Birstall & Wanlip NHW committee member said: “Since the camera went into operation in February, two persistent crimes have been solved, with video footage from the camera being vital to identify the offenders.” The camera can be requested by NHW members and positioned inside their homes, or the local beat team can put the system in position at locations in the village as and when problems occur. Roy said: “There is already a short waiting list for the system, prompting the purchase of a second camera. Both systems will be operational in the village and will be moved by local officers to houses in Birstall and Wanlip where needed.” The camera provides crystal clear images, has a night vision mode and can be mounted inside or outside a property. It can hold two weeks of footage, meaning the system can operate for sustained periods of time with little input from local officers. The Police can plug in a screen or use a smartphone to view the images. Birstall’s Beat Officer PC Richard Carruthers said that the first time the camera was used it provided evidence to enable verbal warnings to be issued to four males, a harassment warning to another and a caution to a further male. He said: “The camera was immediately requested at another address in the village and has been instrumental in the fight against antisocial behaviour. Clearly there is a need for this camera in the community and I fully support it.” He added: “I would encourage residents to contact me or my colleagues PCSOs Mark Butler and Stuart Venables, or the NHW, if you feel a camera would bene-

Vixens runners up BIRSTALL UNITED Juniors under 14 Vixens have had a successful season ending up runners up in the Leicester City & County Girls League. Last season the Vixens and Belles merged to become a dominant force in Leicestershire girls under 14 football. Vixens manager Karen O’Grady said: “The league has had some strong teams but throughout the season the Vixens have played exciting football, always ready to take on the opposition and this is borne out by having only lost three games.” The end of the season was tight with Birstall having to win their last few games to secure the runners up spot. Karen added: “We have a great group of girls who have played some great and attractive football this season and I am

Its SWITCH campaign aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by providing residents with low cost items such as home composters at £5 and £10, wormeries at £16 and Green Cones at £5. A Charnwood spokesman for SWITCH said: “Some of those who’ve already received equipment said that they found the scheme really helpful, it saved them time going to the tip for garden waste, and most of them were amazed from the quantity and variety of things they stopped putting in the black bin.” To find out more about SWITCH: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/switch _expansion • email switch@charnwood.gov.uk, or • call 01509 634563

BIRSTALL VILLAGE has had a very positive start to the 2011 season. The 1st Team has started very well with two very convincing wins. They demolished Huncote CC winning by 9 wickets and Leicester Ivanhoe by 8 wickets. Player availability has hindered the 1st Team at times with a recent losing draw to Twycross CC. There were some fantastic individual performances with a 58 by Dave Sharpe against Bharat Sports CC, a 51 n.o. against Leicester Ivanhoe. Matt Smith got a great 51 against Twycross CC. So far Joshua Saye and Pete Sharpe lead the wicket count.

Nordic walking at Watermead
A FITNESS instructor is offering Nordic Walking sessions in Watermead Country Park. Nordic Walking is a walking technique using specially designed poles that works out the upper body while reducing pressure through the joints. Personal Trainer Hannah Ingram said: “It can be done anywhere, by people of all fitness levels and abilities and is highly effective, affordable and fun. “With the light summery evenings now is a great time to pick up your poles and strike out with something new.” The classes start in July on Thursdays at 12.30pm and 6pm. Sessions last one hour and cost £7 or £36 for six. For information or to book your place contact Hannah on 0793 2403059 or email hannah@destinyperson al training.co.uk
Plans to extend school
RIVERSIDE PRIMARY school will be extended to cope with additional children from Hallam Fields. The original plans for Hallam Fields included a primary school but Leicestershire County Council has told the Birstall Post a school will not now be built there. Instead, the County says it intends to build an extension at riverside school and will meet with headteacher Andy Hayman in June to discuss the details of their proposals. Mr Hayman said: “I welcome these proposals but we will need to ensure that facilities within the school are enhanced to cope with the extra numbers.” The Hallam Fields Primary school is part of the developer Jelson’s 106 agreement with Charnwood Borough Council – it was required to provide £2million for the school. A spokesman for Charnwood said that this part of the 106 agreement would now need to be re-negotiated and that representatives from Jelson’s and the Borough and County councils would meet in the next six months to agree terms. Riverside Primary school is for children aged 4-11 and there are 431 pupils on the school roll. In the past the school roll has been as high as 600.

Stonehill class reunion A GROUP of former Stonehill students are looking for their classmates from 1965. Pauline Brown (neé Paddison) from Class 34 has a picture of the class (above) and is trying to track down the people in it. She said: “As we all turn 60 this year we thought it would be fun to try to find as many as we could from our photo and arrange a get together sometime this year”. In May five of the group met up again after 46 years at Birstall British Legion. “It was an evening of memories and laughter recalling our schooldays” said Pauline. “Who would have thought that two of us when friends at school would have ended up working next door to each other all these years later.” Pauline runs the Fresh Approach on Sibson Road and Dena Patrick works at Mark Patrick Butchers. The classmates Pauline is looking for are: Brian Coles, Michael Treahurn, Richard Sleath, Robert Flowers, Michael Flanders, Christopher Ward, Nicholas Padget, John Legrain, Alan Bart-

Parish NHW news church & crime report news
CRIME FIGURES in general continue to fall, despite the current situation with budget cuts and the loss of resources. Birstall & Wanlip NHW work closely with the Police to ensure the Birstall Police Office is open and functional for the benefit of the public. This office means that the local officers can begin their shift at the office, and work from it throughout their shift, meaning they are working from the centre of Birstall. The NHW have used over the past year, money from membership donations in order to fund items in the police office, and to support the operation of the office as it is such a benefit to the local residents in Birstall and Wanlip. Local policing is also helping the detection of crime in the area, for example: three male youths have been arrested in connection with the theft of cycles from Longslade College. Two cycles have been recovered (May 9). The Youth Café is also more popular than ever! Yet another project in which the NHW has an input. This project allows youngsters to gather in a safe and secure environment, twice a week on Birstall Park. It also provides an opportunity for the local officers to chat to younger people and understand their worries or concerns about the village. The watch is dynamic and adapting with technology, and this is an example of how our work is changing the local area. You can keep up to date with news and information on www.villagewatch.com or search for “Birstall and Wanlip Neighbourhood Watch”, on Facebook! Roy Rollings, Committee Member, Birstall & Wanlip NHW

of my involvement with the Conservative Party, but I can assure you all that the Parish Council is totally non political, and we all work together for the benefit of the village. Please come to a meeting if you would like to see how it is conducted, or if you wish to bring an item to the attention of the Council, there is always a slot on the agenda for ‘members of the public’, but it is rare for anyone to actually attend. Conservative Following the local elections on May 5, Charnwood Borough Council now has two extra Conservative councillors, thanks to the voters of Birstall. We now have all four of our candidates elected, making Birstall all Conservative and we want to thank all of you who voted for us. This gives us four voices on the Borough to put Birstall on the map, and make sure we get heard when problems relating to our village come on the agenda. Our councillors will endeavour to follow through all we promised during our campaign. We all want Birstall to be a caring, clean, safe, happy village for everyone. I would also like to give a personal vote of thanks, to all voters of Riverside ward, who voted for me in the Parish Council election. I was delighted to be reinstated as a member, as I enjoy and take very seriously my duties as a Parish Councillor. Everyone is aware I am sure

My love comes to you anyway. God Bless Betty Howard 80th

Mess Whilst walking through the Hallam Fields Estate with my children last weekend, I was appalled at the amount of rubbish, and dog mess we found (Bridge Green area) What was even more unbelievable was that ‘considerate’ dog owners had obviously brought bags with them on their walks, scooped up the mess, carefully tied up the bag, and then threw it away on the grass verge! I had a carrier bag with me, and whilst walking down through Bridge Green to Harrowgate Drive, collected five bags of dog mess and numerous empty cans and bottles, when we moved into the Estate three years ago Charnwood Borough Council confirmed that dog bins and litter bins would be installed, we are still waiting?! In the meantime, could dog owners please take their mess home with them, Jelsons have kindly provided grass areas on the Hallam Fields site for children to play on, but it’s impossible at present due to the amount of dog mess everywhere! Hallam Fields Resident.
Familiar face I have searched in vain for a familiar name or face as each edition of the Birstall Post becomes available online. Suddenly in April, JACKPOT, as a photograph appeared showing a picture taken outside the Birstall Social Club showing a large group of young people in 1947. I, too, have the original because my mother (centre of picture) organised the youth club and many happy memories were revived for me looking at those friends of so many years ago. It has been fun trying to recall the names of everyone, harder perhaps because we left Birstall and came to Australia in 1948. However, many came to mind though, sadly, I know some are lost forever. Thank you Birstall Post and family of Pad Tillson. You have made my 80th year a very happy one. Audrey Naylor (nee Pickering)
Congratulations
A vacancy has arisen at Burley Houses for a female resident. The Trust has six trustees whose aim is to create an enjoyable, happy community in which residents can be independent but with the benefit of concerned and caring neighbours. Applicants are expected to be able to look after themselves. Residents must have lived in the county of Leicestershire, or have had a husband and/or parent who have lived there, for a period of ten years. Interested parties should apply in writing, in the first instance, to Mrs K Grundy, 54 Johnson Road, Birstall, Leicester LE4 3AS
17 of the 20 parish council posts were uncontested. I hope the election encourages more people to consider becoming members of the parish council as it is there to serve the interests of all the residents of Birstall. Unfortunately, not a single member of the public attended the first full council meeting and I would encourage people to attend so they can see the range of issues that are discussed. Who knows, maybe by the time of the next parish election residents of all five Birstall wards have a choice of councillors? Julian Howe

I would like to congratulate the editor Jerry and all at the Birstall Post for the new format. Making it easier to handle, a clearer print and the colour all help to make it an enjoyable read. It also helps people to keep up to date as to what has gone on in our area and what is to come. So, once again, congratulations and keep up the good work on producing one of the best local papers in the country. Peter Stephenson

EVERY YEAR the WI have put forward a topical resolution to the Government. In the 1940s the WI proposed that women should have equal pay with men and in the 1960s that smoking should be banned in public places. Wheels do grind exceedingly slowly but eventually we are listened to. Our WI voted for two resolutions this year, and ‘WI against the closure of libraries’ and that ‘the Government do not grant planning permission for Mega Farms’ were taken forward. That was the serious part of our meeting but to lighten the mood we all moved from the community rooms at Highcliffe School to the Hall where we were entertained by Highcliffe Harmony. They provided a varied compilation of songs with something for everyone including a medley of Buddy Holly numbers and hits from the 1950s and 60s. After the performance old friendships were renewed between some members of the choir and the WI as they met people they hadn’t seen for years. The competition was won by Eileen James with her lovely flower display in a wine glass. Our next meeting on June 6 will be a Wild West Fancy Dress Garden Party at the home of Beverley Blackburn where we will enjoy cowboy food and games. The competition trophy will be presented to the wearer of the best cowboy/girl outfit. Photographs of the evening will be published on our website www.birstallandwanlipwi.wordpress.c om and we can be contacted on birstallandwanlipwi@hotmail.co.uk. Remember to keep Saturday July 9 free for the mega WI coffee morning at the Methodist Church. From Birstall & Wanlip WI

There were 60 children who took part in the production of Bugsy Malone. Ages ranged from 4-15 years. Bugsy Malone is an all singing, dancing and acting production and the children managed to make the huge show come to life with real splurge guns and cream pies which all the children had tremendous fun with. Faces Arts also held their street dance show ‘Mash Up’ at Wreake Valley College with 65 children taking part.
Jody Chesterton, Proprietor of Faces Arts said: “The children are dedicated once a week and what they have achieved is unbelievable. Sessions are fun, challenging and give the children confidence in a relaxed environment. Their hard work has really shown in their performance with the theatre school and the street dance sessions. I’m so proud of them all.” Faces Arts Summer School – Art, Dance, Drama, Singing Monday to Friday August 1-5 Highcliffe Primary School, Birstall For further information contact jody@facesarts.co.uk or 07971423201

One in eight (12%) felt younger by being online. 72% thought that being online can help reduce feelings of isolation and nearly two-thirds (63%) said it can help to reduce feelings of loneliness. 81% of people said being online makes them feel part of modern society. In separate research conducted by Sky Broadband and YouGov, a snapshot of 'Silver Surfer Britain' illustrates how people in the UK aged over 55 use the internet. One in three British adults in this age group use social networking at least once a week (the West Midlands the most prolific at 46%), 61% read the news online (the South West highest at 74%) and 18% book tickets online at least once a month (with Londoners coming top with 25%).
