Royal rugby match STUDENTS FROM Stonehill and Longslade played rugby with Prince Harry at Twickenham stadium last month.

It was a day to remember for the five girls from year 8 at Stonehill and five of last year’s team members who are now at Longslade College.

but to actually be here and be here as a team as well is brilliant.

Prince Harry didn’t say much to me yet but I played with him, I marked him – he is good.”

Rugby continued from page 1 The girls, along with teams from four other schools across the country, were there to take part in a coaching session as part of the Rugby Football Union’s All Schools programme of which Prince Harry is patron.

Stonehill PE teacher Debs Butler said: “It was an excellent day out – the students were excited to play rugby at Twickenham even before they knew Prince Harry was going to be there! It was a great way to celebrate the effort and achievement of our girls’ rugby programme. Over 40 girls have represented Stonehill at contact rugby in the last 12 months, working hard for their team mates and to improve their skills – a fantastic effort.”

Former England Captain Jason Robinson was also there taking part in the session and passing on advice to the young players.

He said: “It’s great to see so many students from up and down the country taking up the game and embracing the core values that make the sport so special. They have only been playing rugby union for just over a year and I’m sure that having the opportunity to meet Prince Harry and play on the famous pitch at Twickenham will inspire them to keep playing for many years to come.”

Around 250 kilogrammes of apples were collected from around the village and the apple press was taken to Riverside and Highcliffe primary schools where the children made and drank their own apple juice as well as creating a mosaic piece of artwork.

Turbine continued from page 1 Jon Beeson, renewable energy project manager at Severn Trent Water, said: “Work is underway to allow the new wind turbine at Wanlip to be in place by December. When constructed, it will generate around 5,000 mega watt hours of electricity per year, equivalent to supplying around 1,500 homes with power each year.

“It takes a huge amount of electricity to provide water and waste water services to our customers, so this is a great way to help limit the amount of electricity we need to take from the national grid and reduce our carbon footprint. We are already generating almost a quarter of our energy needs from renewables including sewage, hydro and energy from crops grown on our own farmland. Together with the energy from the new wind turbines, we hope to increase that to more than 30% by 2015.”

Charnwood Borough Council refused Severn Trent’s planning application in 2010 but a Planning Inspector considered the appeal and ruled in favour of Severn Trent.

The turbine will have an 80 metre mast and a blade tip height of 132 metres, the same height as the London Eye. It will be one of the largest onshore wind turbines in the country.

Objectors were concerned at the turbine’s visual impact, noise, shadow flicker and its impact on birds and other wildlife.

Martin returns for school visit A TWENTY year old musician who is building a career in the music business returned to his old schools in Birstall as part of a drug abuse awareness campaign.

Martin Luke Brown received a warm welcome at Stonehill and Longslade College where he performed with his band for students.

Martin said: “The combination of the performance and the drugs talk works a treat. The students are all so enthusiastic and appreciative and the whole process

Cycle route improved CYCLING FROM Birstall through Leicester to the southern boundary of the city has been made easier following improvements to the Great Central Way. A programme of resurfacing work and repairs is being carried out to tackle wear and tear along parts of the Great Central Way – a popular cycling, walking and horse riding route following the route of the old great Central Railway and linking the north and south of the city.

The latest works have focused on a section of the route through Aylestone Meadows, between Evesham Road and the bridge over the River Biam. They included repairs to the uneven and potholed surface to make the route safer to use. The next phase of the work will involve repairs and resurfacing to the link running to Braunstone Lane East, which is due to take place on Monday, November 18 for one week.

Improvements to the Great Central Way are part of a wider £250,000 programme of Riverside Way works, which are funded by the Department for Transport and NHS Leicester.

The Riverside Way will tie in to new works being undertaken around the Innovation Centre and a developer-funded bridge linking to Wolsey Island off Abbey Park Road in the north of the city.

The route north from Birstall through Watermead Country Park to Cossington was completed last year.

Remembering his time at Longslade, he said: “I had a great time here A levels especially. I always hear of other schools being very cliquey but it felt like a massive family here. Everyone got on with everyone and a lot of my year are doing some incredible things only two years after leaving!”

Pa’s England selection BIRSTALL LADIES Bowling Club’s Pa Walker’s superb form this season has been rewarded with a place in the England team for the 2014 International Series, which will take place in Jersey.

Pa, who has been bowling for eight years, reached the quarter final of the National Singles Championship and was in the Leicestershire team that reached the National semi final of the Walker Cup. She was part of the Birstall rink that represented England at the British Isles championships and won this year’s county fours title. She also won the county Champion of Champions competition and was runner up in the county singles.

HATS preparing for panto HATS ARE busy rehearsing their 2013 panto which this year has been written by two members of the society.

One of the founder members, Elaine Hunt, wrote the first pantomime HATS performed way back in 1992. She has now teamed up with another member Phil Walton, to write this year’s pantomime “Bah! Humbug the Panto”. Phil has also written all the songs and put together the music.

“There are still several members in the group who performed in that first panto in 1992 but we have quite a lot of new talented members who have joined our group in the last couple of years” said spokesman Rod Atkins.

“Our pantomime this year is not one of the traditional stories but it does contain all the traditional panto ingredients. Oh, yes it does!”

Sainsbury’s roadworks ROADWORKS AT the site of a new supermarket development are being speeded up to help bring to an end traffic disruption in the area.

Sainsburys is building a new supermarket at the former GE Lighting site at the corner of Troon Way and Melton Road, and the development includes extensive roadworks to improve two main junctions close to the store. Changes include creating new access roads, lanes and pedestrian crossing facilities to improve traffic flow and road safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Leicester City Council has now met with developers to agree ways in which the work can be completed ahead of schedule to enable the Melton Road/Troon Way junction to be fully operational by early November.

Final resurfacing work for the Nicklaus Close/Troon Way/Gleneagles Avenue junction is now also planned for early November, meaning all major highway works linked to the supermarket should be completed by mid November.

From this week contractors will be employing an additional team of staff to work during the late evenings, nights and weekends. The moves follow a series of ongoing meetings with the contractors, at which concerns about the extent of the roadworks and the disruption caused to motorists were discussed.

Cllr Richard Miller has resigned from the council as he has moved out of the area. There are now three vacancies on the Council.

It was reported that Birstall has a new Principal Beat Officer, PC David Jaeckels. It was agreed to write to the Police to express concern that PBOs are not in post long enough and move on just as they are becoming familiar with the area.

It was reported that the estimated budget for the planned community hall at Hallam Fields was £416,000. This sum has been provided by the developer Jelson. The Council agreed to consult with an architect to get some idea of the size of the building before undertaking wider consultation with potential users of the hall.

The Council has received legal advice that any work it does to the Meadow Lane ditch may result in the council assuming liability. It was reported that there would be a site meeting with a County Council Officer on October 16.

The Parish Council would like to culvert the ditch to reduce flooding and for safety reasons. The ownership of Meadow Lane remains unknown.

It was reported that Leicester City Council may have asked the traveller family on Greengate Lane to vacate the land by the end of October. The family currently occupy the land the City Council want to build a permanent traveller site on. The Parish Council have asked the City Council to clarify the situation.

It was agreed that Birstall Gala 2014 be held on June 28 & 29. It was agreed not to proceed with a Flower and Produce Show in 2014, but to make the Village Hall available free of charge to any group that wished to organise a show.

The Council agreed to respond to the County Council’s plans to close one of its two car parks at the end of Meadow Lane by saying that both car parks should remain in use if possible.

The fee Charnwood charge the Parish Council for monitoring Birstall’s CCTV camera has increased from £700 per annum to £1036 for 2013/14. It was agreed that other suppliers be investigated for 2014/15, when Charnwood’s rate will increase to £1372.

Musical education in local schools

Dog waste blitz A BLITZ on dog fouling is being targeted on Birstall’s School Lane playing fields.

It is one of nine hotspot areas identified by Charnwood Borough Council after it consulted with parish councils in the borough.

Officers from Charnwood will increase patrols, post awareness leaflets and seek to prosecute offenders where possible. The council has also produced a tongue-in-cheek ‘public information’ film to help people deal with dog fouling as well as a campaign Facebook page.

Alan Twells, Charnwood Borough Council’s Head of Regulatory Services, said: “Dog fouling is one of the biggest sources of environmental complaint we receive and the Don’t Muck Around campaign is our commitment to residents that we will take action by educating, raising awareness and taking action against offenders..

“It is frustrating for our communities that there are still people who do not realise that wrapped dog waste can be placed in any public highway litter bin – not just designated dog waste bins.

There is no excuse for it and our analysis shows that the people most likely to commit offences are aged between 21 and 40 – they’re old enough to know better.”

Charnwood Borough Council receives nearly 200 reports of dog fouling each year and earlier this year prosecuted two people in court for dog fouling-related offences.

THE BIRSTALL Area Music Centre was launched last month to give young school musicians a chance to play in a wind band or string ensemble under the guidance of professional musicians.

The Centre is run by the Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service in partnership with Stonehill and Longslade schools. It meets during term time at Stonehill on Thursdays from 4-5pm.

With so many people still suffering financial hardship donations of goods to the charity’s 23 shops spread across the city and county have fallen off dramatically in recent times. People are feeling the need to hang on to their clothing much longer and all too often when it is donated the quality is not what it used to be.

At the same time people are not moving house or purchasing new furniture as frequently as before thereby hanging on to their household items much longer.

& crime report Is your Car Safe when Parked?

If you left a ten pound note tucked under the windscreen wiper of your parked car, you would not be surprised to find it missing when you returned. Yet many of us leave items of much greater value in full view on the back seat with only the window glass to protect them.

Opportunist thieves will look around looking for such easy pickings. It can take only seconds to break a car window.

It does not help much if the valuables are hidden under coats or blankets, since thieves are used to this. They will often break in just to check whether anything is hidden under them. Then, even if you have lost nothing, your car is damaged.

If you have to leave items in your car, make sure that they are all out of sight locked in the boot. Leave nothing on view, even if it is of little value. Thieves are less likely to run the risk of being caught if the car looks as if it is empty.

Your sat-nav is always a very tempting thing to steal, so make sure it is out of sight or, much better, take it with you when you leave the car. But remember also to remove the bracket and cables and put them out of sight. Do not forget to wipe off the telltale circle left on the windscreen by the adhesive sucker. Remove all clues to the fact that you have been using a sat-nav.

Make sure you car is properly locked and that the alarm is set. If you can, park in a well-lit area or secure car park, particularly in the coming dark winter evenings. Tell potential thieves that you are one step ahead of them by displaying a notice that all items of value have been removed from your car.

These notices and other items, such as special screws to protect your number plates, are available free of charge to members at our Advice Shop, where you can also purchase other security items at cost.

It is open every third Saturday of the month in the Police Office on Sibson Road Car Park (opposite the garden centre) between 10am and 12noon. It is run in conjunction with the Police Beat Surgery where you can speak to a local Police Officer, in confidence, about any matters that are causing you concern.

Crime Report : Birstall September 2013 Assaults 4, burglary 3, burglary nondwelling 1, damage 3, damage to motor vehicle 3, theft 8, theft cycle 1, theft from motor vehicle 4, theft stores 3.

Yet again crime has dropped in Birstall. Shop thefts continue to decline and the ones that are reported are dealt with swiftly and robustly. Another male has been charged with stealing from Birstall’s shops and bailed with conditions not to enter the village. The prolific offenders that we target are slowly being kept out of the village and our hope is that the courts will continue to support our approach.

The Birstall beat team have continued to work hard in targeting the perpetrators of antisocial behaviour. Fortunately we have good relations with the council, social services and other local agencies so have been successful in reducing reoccurring incidents.

Thefts in general have begun to increase and theft from motor vehicles has suddenly risen. The majority of these crimes appear to have been opportunists, finding tools and Sat Navs left on show.

So I would remind everyone to take extra care, to remove their valuables from their cars and keep them out of sight.

Finally I have to inform you that September was my last month as Beacon Officer here in Birstall. I would like to thank everyone for making my role an enjoyable one and for supporting my ideas and helping me to reduce crime by 14% in the village. The new Birstall Beacon officer who started on October 1 is PC 1759 Dave Jaeckels. Scouts triumph in district challenge MP visits Opticare A TEAM of four Birstall scouts competed against 15 other teams from across North-East Leicestershire in the Dave Smart challenge.

BIRSTALL’S MP Stephen Dorrell visited a local opticians to find out about the importance of regular eye tests.

After his visit to the Anstey branch Mr Dorrell who is chairman of the House of Commons Health St Committee, said: “I was pleased to have the opportunity to visit Opticare. I had an interesting conversation about the changing shape of optical care and the role of optical care in primary care provision.”

Optometrists and practice owners Shaishav Shah and Paresh Patel explained some of the benefits of regular sight tests to Mr Dorrell such as the detection of eye diseases, like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal detachments.

Mr Shah said: “1.8 million people in the UK are living with sight loss and this figure is set to increase to nearly 4 million by 2050, largely due to the ageing population.

Much of this is preventable through the early detection and treatment of eye problems. Regular eye tests are a simple and a practical way to maintain good eye health and look after your eyes.”

Many groups of people are entitled to free NHS tests. These include those aged 60 and over, all children under 16 and those on low incomes.

The event, set up in memory of a former scout leader, saw scouts competing in a range of challenges including bar skittles with a mini digger, canoeing, mountain biking and orienteering over the course of a weekend.

The competition is designed to test teamwork, leadership and communication as well as the fundamental skills of scouting such as pioneering, map reading and camping.

80 scouts aged 10-14 years old from scout groups across the North-East of Leicestershire competed over the two days supported by over 20 leaders. The Birstall team was Matthew Walpole (12), Ben Farnham (12), Michael Brandist (13) and Jack Simms (11).

Camping in the Proctors Park campsite and hiking around the outskirts of Quorn and Barrow Upon Soar all but one team managed to complete the challenge.

performed beyond even their own expectation to achieve third place out of the sixteen teams which is a vast improvement from the eighth out of nine teams that was achieved last year.

“I was very proud of the achievements of our team, for me more important than the third place was that the team was complimented for their manners and compassion when a fellow team mate was taken ill”.

He added “the skills and attitudes displayed by of all the competitors were really positive and they deserve real credit.”

The Dave Smart Challenge achieved record numbers of competitors in its sixth year and was made possible by the leaders of the 86th Buckminster Road Scout group who coordinated the event Gareth said: “The competition provides a unique opportunity for scouts to learn new skills, meet new people and also to develop friendships, and was a resounding success and was enjoyed by all involved.

Volunteer’s help recognised A DEDICATED volunteer has received a special badge to mark her years of service.

Jan Gaskell (71) of Roman Road has worked as a volunteer for Cancer Research UK for 35 years and the Victim of Crime Support Group for 10 years.

Jan is Chairman of the Charnwood Branch of Cancer Research UK which organises six fundraising events a year, that together raise between £6-11,000.

Jan said: “We are very fortunate to have a large group of supporters who come to our Jan Gaskell events.

“Of course I can’t provide nursing care or get involved in research but I can help to raise funds and that is a really important part of Cancer Research UK.” Jan is Chairman of the Victim of Crime Support Group for the area and helps out in its Leicester charity shop.

She was awarded an MBE earlier this year for her voluntary work.

Jan said: “I am fortunate to have come from a very loving family and feel that I live, here in Birstall, in a caring community and the voluntary work I do is just an extension of that.”

WI news TWENTY SIX ladies attended Birstall and Wanlip WI’s meeting on October 7 at Highcliffe School.

Our main discussion concerned arrangements for our Carol Concert on December 1 at Harrison Road Methodist Church commencing at 4.30pm. We will be hosting this concert on behalf of the six local WI’s that make up the Bradgate Group. It is a free, family concert so everyone is welcome to attend.

With our AGM planned for next month our thoughts inevitably turn to 2014 and some members will be attending a Speaker’s Audition Evening to choose speakers for next year. As usual there are plenty of Christmas craft workshops taking place over the next two months within Leicestershire and we hope to have our own Christmas lunch at the Platform Café at Leicester North Station. Plans for next year include a July trip to Kilworth House theatre to see an open air production of South Pacific.

Our speaker was Bill Wells, a Community Fire Safety Officer who talked to us about ‘Fire Safety with a Smile’. Although he regaled us with humorous anecdotes the serious message was obviously clear and we all returned home with his advice firmly fixed in our minds to pull out all electric plugs and close doors before retiring to bed.

Our next meeting on November 4 is our AGM with a Buffet and Quiz.

Lift sharing website IF YOU need a lift each morning from Birstall to Leicester there are currently three people offering to take you on a lift sharing website launched by the County and City Councils. www.LeicesterSHARE.com allows users to search for other potential car share partners across the city, county and beyond.

The free-to-use website was relaunched in April and since that time has seen more than 350 people sign up.

The public database enables members to search through thousands of lift share partners locally and across the county.

You enter your starting point and destination and the website finds lift share partners.

Alongside that Leicester SHARE also supports more than 880 employers of businesses and organisations through providing private car sharing groups.

The revamped site also has a calculator which enables users to work out how much money and fuel they could save by car sharing.

Peter Osborne Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member of Highways and Transport, said: “We are delighted that people are signing up to the scheme.

Car sharing, depending on your commute or journey, could save you hundreds of pounds a year, not to mention the cost of vehicle wear-and-tear.”

News from the churches There is something of a feeling of inevitability about the month of November. Those beautiful free and easy summer days we had, are now only a memory. Autumn has been with us for what already seems a long time and the yearly, familiar pattern of November events lies ahead before the build up to Christmas (or has it already started in a supermarket near you?)

The year’s end approaches The month starts off at St James with an All Together service at 10am on Sunday November 3 followed by the annual All Souls’ service at 3pm. Anyone who has been bereaved is welcome to come to this short service of reflection and prayer, and the opportunity to light a candle in memory of loved ones. Refreshments are served after both the services, so there is opportunity to meet and chat. 2013 has brought some sad losses to our congregations, with the passing away of such stalwarts as Maureen Holland and Mary Houghton from St James in Birstall, as well as June Wood and Peter Moyers of Our Lady and St Nicholas at Wanlip, and we mourn their loss.

Remembrance Day On Sunday November 10 at 10.30am St James hosts the British Legion service for Remembrance Day, with the procession of uniformed organisations before and after the service, and the laying of wreaths on the War Memorial.

To cheer the dark days!

On the evening of November 3 the Ibstock Brass Band will be playing at their annual autumn concert at St James, starting at 7.30pm Another cheery, regular event is the Beer and Skittles evening organised by our social committee, this year at the Royal Oak in Cossington, at 7.30pm on Tuesday November 12.

A hot and cold supper is included for £8, but only 30 places are available so please ring .2676550 if you are interested. Then on Sunday November 24 the ever popular Quiz and tea afternoon takes place in the Village Hall at 3pm with Alan Chapman once again the genial quizmaster.

And to end with...

Finally, a date that marks the real beginning of the Advent and Christmas season: December 1 is Advent Sunday this year, so at 10am there will be an All Together Christingle service at St James, with decorated oranges for the children, and songs and stories to remind us that Advent is the time to prepare for the coming of the Christ child at Christmas. At 6pm the same day, all are welcome to come and sing Advent hymns and carols at the joint churches’ Advent Service at Wanlip church.

Christmas Festival The theme for this years’ Christmas Festival is ‘Stable Story’ and on Friday 29 & Saturday November 30 the church will be decorated with trees, models, displays, etc.

The church is grateful to the many skilled friends who are able to use their creative skills to interpret the theme each in their own way. There is always an air of eager anticipation to view the many and varied displays and to see how the theme has been interpreted.

This year proceeds are for church funds and for Asthma UK. The suggested admission price is £1 but accompanied children are not expected to contribute.

On Friday there will be a whole range of stalls including home-made cakes, pies, pastries, jams chutneys & pickles. Christmas gifts, decorations, crafts & novelties. Santa will have a grotto and refreshments will be served throughout (including a Hot Dog stall pancakes & punch). Light lunches are available on both days. Open at 10am & runs through until 7pm.

On Saturday 30 there will be over 20 stalls at a ‘Table Top Sale’ from 10am to 1pm.

Edgehill Road & All Saints A number of Methodists in Birstall support the coffee shop at Edgehill Road and will know of the move that friends at Edgehill Road were to make to the All Saints Church at the junction of Catherine St and Gypsy Lane.

At long last that move takes place with the first service on November 3 when Roger Wilson, from Birstall, leads the first service.

Their coffee shop will reopen at ‘All Saints’ on Thursday November 7 at 10am.

Quinquennial Every five years our church buildings have to be inspected by a qualified professional who look for any work that needs doing and whether they are essential, or advisable, and the degree of urgency. The inspection was conducted in August and the report recently received. Usually there are minor items to do within a year (for example a warning notice to the boiler room steps), but only one item appeared under the heading ‘of utmost urgency’. It related to paperwork regarding asbestos. It appears a document is needed to state whether or not there is asbestos within the building. Discussion Topics Autumn is a season of rich colours as the leaves turn to russet, crimson and gold and we may have seen a peacock butterfly flitting through our gardens, but these are also signs of the approaching end to their lives.
