Petition calls for track access A PETITION has been started calling for a track across the Meadow Lane playing fields to be opened for pedestrian access.

Firm’s glowing report AN INDEPENDENT report has shown that a Birstall window, door and conservatory specialist has been rated as “Excellent” by its customers.

Call Now for a Free Quotation

Available in a choice of colours A-Rated as Standard

Conservatory & Window Concepts Ltd received the report from the Consumer Protection Association, an organisation that helps the public to find safe, reliable contractors to carry out home improvements. CWC is run by local couple Byron & Mandy Manning. They said: “It’s thanks to our customers that we have received such a glowing report - it just goes to show that we always put quality first.”

The 164 metre track runs from Meadow Lane to the Worcester Avenue allotments and was laid by Birstall Parish Council in 2013 for use by allotment tenants and parish council staff for grounds maintenance. Although open at the allotment end, the track is fenced off at the Meadow Lane end, meaning that any pedestrians using it have to climb over the gate or a fence. Tony Moore of Worcester Avenue has started the petition which has 128 signatures. He said: “In one sense the matter is trivial, but on the other hand £9450 has been spent [on this track] to benefit only a handful of people. When the grass is wet and muddy on the playing field the track would be really useful for pedestrians. “I’m not suggesting a great deal of money be spent, just removing a tiny bit of fencing would allow people to use it.” Parish Council Chairman Ann Marshall said: “The track was never intended or designed for pedestrian use but always for access by vehicles. As a public body we have Health & Safety to consider and can’t risk public safety by letting pedestrians use it.” Access was previously along a track shared with Birstall United Seniors Football club that ran alongside their pitch, but the gate was often left insecure and there were repeated incidents of fly tipping which the council had to pay to have removed. Since the new track has been laid there have been no instances of fly tipping. Mr Moore is hoping his petition may persuade the Parish Council to reconsider their decision which because of the six month rule, could not be changed before March 2015.

Abbey Road recording sessions TWO BIRSTALL musicians took part in a recording session at London’s Abbey Road studios last month. Composer Kathleen Shanks and cellist Pat Dobson joined singers and instrumentalists from Leicestershire for a recording of Gloria In Londinium, composed by Kathleen to raise money for Help For Heroes. Pat, chair of the Leicester Symphony Orchestra, said: “It was great to be invited down to the Abbey Road Studios by Kathleen to record the song. We travelled

by coach along with members of the Leicester Philharmonic Choir. We were joined in the studios by the Capital Arts Children's Choir, London Children's Opera Company, and

Pic: (top) Kathleen conducts from the podium and (below) on the steps of Abbey Road

the London Cantamusica Choir. Steven Maughan was the pianist and Kathleen conducted us.” Kathleen, who works in London as a chorus director on West End shows and operas, was commissioned to write Gloria In Londinium, a children’s anthem,

for the London 2012 Olympics. A film of Gloria In Londinium was broadcast world-wide during the Olympics. The film track used the voices of the Capital Arts Children’s Choir interwoven with recordings of children from every continent.

Continued from page 3 Kathleen, whose family lives in Birstall, said: “My publisher commissioned an arrangement for adult choir, children’s choir and small orchestra which was used during Prince Harry’s Invictus Games. A letter from Kensington Palace set in motion the Abbey Road recording which will feature on a Help For Heroes album to be released in the New Year.” Gloria In Londinium is published by the American company, Hal Leonard. Pat Dobson said: “Leicester Symphony Orchestra is very pleased to support this charity venture. An opportunity to play at Abbey Road Studios does not come up very often so it was too good to miss. It was wonderful to visit the studios, which were opened by Sir Edward Elgar, and to see all the pictures of the artists who have recorded there. The orchestra's founder, Sir Malcolm Sargent, made hundreds of recordings at Abbey Road so we really were walking in the footsteps of some truly outstanding musicians.” Also recorded on the same day was Kathleen’s cantata Song Of Mary, which tells the story of the life of Christ through his mother’s eyes. The cantata will receive its première at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, on January 4, 2015 with the London Cantamusica Choir, royal harpist Claire Jones, and oboist, James Turnbull.

Laura’s 24 hour tennis challenge A 24 HOUR tennis challenge by Laura Morley from Birstall Watermead Tennis club has raised nearly £1,500 for charity. The Big Charity 24 Hour Tennis Challenge was organised by Laura Morley(pictured), who stayed on her feet and playing throughout the 24 hours. Various different events were scheduled throughout the marathon event, including cardio tennis, individual coaching, under 16 v over 60s tennis with wooden rackets and tots tennis. Laura said: “I’m over the moon with the money we raised. I can’t thank everyone enough for volunteering their time and energy to help me complete the challenge. “The biggest struggle was the first hour of the challenge when torrential rain forced us, myself and seven under 8s, under the marquee to continue our tennis session. “Knowing so many club members, friends and family were behind me really helped me to stay motivated, fresh and enthusiastic. “The highlight was hitting the 14 hour mark and seeing the sun rise over the courts, with mist in the field – beautiful!” Including on-line donations, the total raised so far is £1,497, of which 10 per cent will go towards the purchase of extra equipment for junior tennis. The remainder will go to the Meningitis Research Foundation, in memory of former club member, Sheila Bartlett, wife of outgoing treasurer Roger Bartlett. The club wants to thank all who helped on the day, either playing, offering refreshments and running the barbecue, all who donated cakes and biscuits and raffle prizes and everyone who came just to support Laura. www.birstallwatermeadtennis.co.uk

Plans for 4500 new homes approved

7

ASDA

PLANS FOR 4500 new homes on land behind the Asda store in Thurmaston have been given the goahead by Charnwood Borough Council. Around 100 residents attended the meeting of Charnwood’s planning committee where the plans were discussed for more than three hours. Councillors decided by seven votes to five to support their officers’ recommendation and approve planning permission, which resulted in angry shouts from many objectors. The Barkby and Barkby Thorpe Action Group led the campaign against the development. The objections included: • impact on local roads • loss of village separation and community identity • loss of agricultural land • no proper consideration of alternative sites The development will be delivered over 15-20 years at an annual build rate of 200-300 dwellings per year. Charnwood’s current housing target is 17,380 new dwellings between 2006-2028. 5811 new dwellings have been completed in the period 2006-2014. Section 106 developer contributions are negotiated to mitigate the impact of developments and for this development will run into many millions of pounds – the contribution towards new schools

alone totals £37million. Money for new roads, leisure and health facilities will also have to be provided. The development is the largest planning application ever to come before Charnwood Borough Council. The plans include: • 4500 dwellings • 25% affordable housing • 13 hectares of employment land creating 3000 jobs • two local centres • one district centre • a range of retail outlets and one large convenience store • a travellers site adjacent to the A607, near to the Asda roundabout • up to three new primary schools and a site reserved for a secondary school • healthcare facilities • allotments • a sports centre with full size artificial pitch

• a new southern link road • a northern link road connecting to the A607 Syston by-pass • increasing accessible open space on the devel-

opment site from 35 hectares to 137 The 360 hectare development site straddles the Charnwood and Leicester Continued on page 8

Continued from page 7 City Council boundary. The majority of the land is currently in agricultural use. The applicants are Commercial Estates Project Ltd and Mr J Pochin Trustees. Their application states: The North East of Leicester Sustainable Urban Extension will be a locally distinctive, sustainable and thriving new community that is well integrated and has excellent connections with Thurmaston and Leicester. It will assist in realising regeneration opportunities for Thurmaston and north east Leicester and create a new focus for the community east of the railway line but maintain a physical

separation from Syston, Barkby and Barkby Thorpe. “It will provide a balanced mix of high quality housing as well as diverse employment opportunities and an excellent network of green infrastructure which connects into existing areas of environmental value and includes an extension of the Leicester Hamilton Green Wedge. It will have vibrant centres that provide a heart to the community and accessible community, shopping and business facilities.” More details on the planning pages of Charnwood’s website, planning application P/13/2498/2

Bus shelters Well done, yet again, Simon Samsome, for getting the bus shelters for the Hallam Fields estate. What a pity we can't get more positive movement on the re-siting of the Shelter from the Triangle to Wanlip Lane as I and Councillor Bentley proposed months ago! Please, Residents of 'old' Birstall, please contact the Parish, Borough and County councillors on this important matter. I have contacted the advertising company and owners of the site shelter. They can and will be persuaded to help move the shelter! William Hill

Hi sorry to be pedantic but the quote on planning (on page 19 of the November edition) as ‘North Birstall’ is incorrect as all that land is within the boundary of Wanlip. We as residents have been misled from this for a long time and want people to know this will ruin and split our small but very friendly neighbourhood. They make references to green living with a new train station for commuting? Do they not realise this is a historic line ran by enthusiast and not a main line? With a new ‘bypass’ which will actually ‘bypass’ the park and ride? Planning? Paul (resident of Wanlip)

Thanks Thanks to all who have helped to make a blind person’s life much improved by donating stamps. F B Savidge

Thanks May I take this opportunity of wishing all travellers with St Theresa's Social Group a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year The collection tin up and down the coach has raised just over £400 for Wishes for Kids with still one trip to go. Thank you all so much for your continued support, don’t forget your stamped addressed envelopes if your interested in 2015 trips and holidays Daphne Stephenson

Traffic It is welcome news (in the Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter for November) that a Community Speed Watch Scheme is going to be set up in Birstall next year. That seems a better idea than installing more of those awful road humps (so-called ‘sleeping policemen’). Hopefully the first scheme will be on Greengate Lane as it is a very busy road, with a school, and the traffic seems to be increasing all the time and will no doubt continue to increase when all the planned housing in the areas adjacent to Birstall is built and occupied. There are a lot of bad drivers and motor cycle riders who ignore the speed limit signs. Just as important and perhaps more so in some ways, would be to have some sort of Weight Watch Scheme. During the past year or so on Greengate Lane, where I live, there has been a steady increase in very large, very long lorries and a lot of them must exceed the weight limit of 7.5 tonnes especially when heavily laden (there is a sign at each end of Greengate Lane indicating this to be the weight limit). The ground and my house shake some-

THE BIRSTALL POST DEC 2014

what when these huge lorries go past. ARRIVA have informed me that the weight of their double-decker buses is seven tonnes without passengers. Therefore it seems logical to assume that double-decker buses used by other companies are of a similar weight and those used to transport schoolchildren to and from schools in Birstall are likely to be over the weight limit. If this is so they should not be travelling along Greengate Lane. Unfortunately the police seem to be ‘turning a blind eye’ to the weight restriction transgressions. The bridge over the Great Central Railway must be taking a battering from the huge, heavy lorries that travel over it most days. The evidence for this appears to be all the repair work which has been carried out on the brick built parapets at the sides of the bridge over the past 18 months or so. Several parts of the parapet have been repointed and a section of brickwork about six feet in length, at the end of each parapet has been dismantled and the bricks relaid. Let’s hope those responsible for the maintenance of the bridge are also paying attention to the brick arch beneath although probably this is just a facing, a cover as protection against the weather for steel girders or a steel structure which actually supports the roadway and the parapets. The railway was started to be constructed in 1894 (I am told that the soil excavated, or most of it, to create the cutting which accommodates the track was placed on the ground which is now the cemetery) : it opened for the transport of coal in 1898 and for passenger and freight traffic in 1899. At the time the bridge was built, obviously at the same time as the railway, it was for horse-drawn vehicles and this was the case for several years and it could not have been envisaged in 1899 that it would eventually have to cater for all the vehicles which pass along it nowadays. It must have been well constructed and it is obviously very strong to cope with all the traffic in 2014 but however strong a bridge might be it must have its limits which is presumably the reason for imposing a weight restriction of seven tonnes. Hopefully the bridge is not going to collapse in the near future but I do have an uneasy feeling about it. Surely the police need to start checking the weight of those huge lorries wanting to travel along Greengate Lane and turning away those above the limit otherwise there is no point in having the weight restriction signs. Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on October 10. PCSO Mark Butler reported on the large number of lead thefts from properties on the Hallam Fields estate. He said that owners of VW/Audi cars were being targeted by thieves who had a device to disable the car security and who are stealing contents. It was agreed that an action sheet/job list relating to staff should not be made public as it may identify individual staff members. It was agreed that the clerk prepare a progress report of outstanding resolutions of the council and its committees so that councillors and the public can see progress updates on actions agreed. It was reported that a motorist who became stuck under the height barrier of the Sibson Road car park sustained damage to his roof rack. The barrier’s actual height was lower at one end than the published height. The Parish council paid £130 for repairs to the roof rack and £270 to have the barrier positioned at the correct height. It was agreed to spend £863 installing security anti climb bars at the Age Concern Day Centre and the fire exit door to be courtyard at the Village Hall. The Council appointed a project manager to oversee the construction of the community hall at Hallam Fields. The chairman reported she had attended a site meeting with County Council officers regarding the erection of three bus shelters on Loughborough Road. It was reported that Cllr Les Ashton had submitted a letter of resignation.

Traffic lights THE TIMINGS of traffic light changes at the junction of the A6 with Greengate Lane have been altered to reduce congestion. Borough Cllr Simon Sansome contacted Leicestershire County Council after residents raised their concerns about the junction. County Council officers spent two weeks monitoring the junction and then made changes to the timings which they say has relieved some of the congestion on the side roads and reduced queuing. The overall ‘cycle time’ of the junction has been reduced to 96 seconds so that greens will appear more frequently.

Beginners complete half marathon THREE MEMBERS of Birstall Beginners Running Group which started in January this year competed in the recent Leicester Half Marathon. Kathy Hughes and Lee Melbourne (pictured) completed the race in 2.44 and 2.20 respectively. Kathy joined the group shortly after it started with a specific aim of doing a half marathon for charity, when the opportunity to do the Leicester race cropped up she chose to run for Vista and in the end raised over £800. Lee joined the group to join his wife Sandra who had been with it since the opening night. Despite a knee cartilage operation in May, Lee got himself back to full fitness and as an incentive to complete the race raised money for Wishes for Kids easily breaking his £100 target. A third runner, Jackie Carter, who also joined the group in its early stages completed the race in an amazing 1.57. “Completing the 13.1 miles in under two

Pupils make poppies

PUPILS AT Riverside primary school each made their own ceramic poppy for Remembrance Day. Around 500 were gathered together for a display in the school’s reception area. Pupil Spencer Smith (10) said: “It took me about 30 minutes to make and then another 30 minutes to paint. We made them for Remembrance Day, when people wear poppies and remember the people who died in the war.” Pics: (top) Riverside pupils beside the poppies are Zain, Spencer, Jamie, Lillie, Kaydi and Maisie

& crime report Your Rights as a Consumer As Christmas approaches many of us will be buying presents and spending more money than we usually do. New consumer regulations that came into force last June give us extra protection if we buy goods and services online or on the doorstep*. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 bring the United Kingdom into line with the rest of Europe and give consumers one set of rules. So if you purchase goods in another European Union country you have the same shopping rights as if you bought them here. Any trader selling goods and services will have to provide information before the purchase and also at the time of the actual purchase. They have to be clear and open about any rights you have to cancel the order. This applies not only to face-to-face sales in a shop but also to goods bought online or that are sold to you in your home*. Failure to provide the information

in the way set out in the regulations could result in your right to cancel being extended for up to a year. Digital content is protected for the first time, so you now have the same rights when you download films or games. When buying online or at home*, you now have fourteen days from when your purchases are delivered to inspect them or to re-consider any services you have signed up to and cancel the order if you change your mind. There are some situations in which the cancellation rights will not apply or are limited. If you have signed up for membership of a gym, for example, it is entitled to charge you for any use you have made of it before cancelling. Traders do not have to provide a refund until the goods are returned and received by them. You have to return any unwanted items in good condition within fourteen days of cancelling the order. Traders are entitled to deduct part of the refund where an item has been damaged by unnecessary handling. Traders are required to be open about any additional fees or payment charges. Crime Report, Birstall & Wanlip October 2014 Assaults 7, burglary 6, burglary nondwelling 3, damage 2, damage to motor vehicle 2, theft 8, theft cycle 2, theft from motor vehicle 6, theft of motor vehicle 2, theft from store 4

RECORDED CRIME has unfortunately risen again this month with a total of 42 crimes reported during October, up from 28 last month. This has been mainly due to a rise in ‘other’ theft offences of which we have had eight this month. Three of these thefts were of lead flashing from buildings, all of which have been on the Hallam Fields Estate and all of which occurred overnight. Please ensure that you report any suspicious vehicles or activity that you may see if travelling round this estate or indeed any part of Birstall or Wanlip, especially after dark. The beat team has been busy conducting extra patrols this month as historically we see a rise in burglary offences this time of year. This is due to the darker evenings combined with Diwali celebrations, meaning that houses are often left unoccupied more than usual. A large number of residents have been visited and offered crime prevention advice and burglary leaflets have also been delivered to any houses where there was no answer. We will be continuing these patrols in the run up to Christmas in order to provide both a visual deterrent to any would-be burglars and offer re-assurance to the local community. In last months report I mentioned that we had all recently received training in the new speed detection device and this week we have been out conducting checks on the roads where speed has been highlighted as being an issue. The roads we targeted were Birstall Road (towards Red Hill Circle), Greengate Lane (towards the A6) and Wanlip Lane (towards Sibson Road). We chose speed of 35mph before stopping drivers as we would normally only prosecute above this speed & the results are as follows: Birstall road – 463 vehicles through the site of which 18 were exceeding 35mph. Greengate Lane – 498 vehicles through the site of which 7 were exceeding 35mph. Wanlip Lane – 178 vehicles through the site of which only 3 were exceeding 35mph. All drivers who were travelling at 35mph or above were advised regarding their speed and in the main they were apologetic and receptive. We will continue to conduct further checks at these sites in

Concert of Christmas music CHILDREN FROM Highcliffe primary school will be joining the Cantamaci choir for a concert of Christmas music in Birstall this month. After concerts and services this year in Lichfield, Bulgaria and Southwell, Cantamaci Choir makes a welcome return to Birstall to present their seasonal offering of carols, both old and new. “From the 16th century to the 20th century, there should be something to suit every taste” said a spokesman. “Harold Darke’s ‘In the Bleak MidWinter’ is always a favourite, while Kenneth Leighton’s ‘the Christ Child Lay on Mary’s Lap’ is both modern and thought-provoking. Several items are by the composer and arranger John Rutter and the children of Highcliffe School will swell the ranks with his ‘Star Carol’. There will be an opportunity for the audience to join in also, so bring your voices!” Proceeds from the event will be donated to the St James’ Church charity – ‘Bubbles’. The concert is on Saturday December 6th in St James’ Church, Birstall at 7pm. Tickets are £8, children 11-16 £2, children under 11 are free. In advance: 2675518

THE BIRSTALL POST DEC 2014

News from the churches Any chance of a white Christmas? The promise by the meteorologists of a rainy winter does not suit our mental picture of the ideal Christmas, with bells pealing out over a snow-covered landscape, and children playing in the snow, as they wait for Father Christmas to arrive! The only thing we can be sure of is that the bells will peal out, whatever the weather, for our special Christmas services at St James, Birstall and Our Lady and St. Nicholas at Wanlip. Some ways to celebrate We start with the popular Christingle All together service at Birstall on December 7 at 10am, when decorated oranges are given to all the children and money raised for the Children’s Society. This day is also the festival of St. Nicholas, Wanlip’s patron saint and there is a Communion service there at 6pm to celebrate. Also at Wanlip, on Sunday December 14 at 6pm, there will be a carol service with readings, by candlelight, in the lovely surroundings of the ancient church. For those who prefer a less formal atmosphere there will be a chance to sing favourite carols round the Christmas tree the following evening at Wanlip at 6pm. To return to Birstall: December 17 is the date for the annual Scouts and Guides carol service at 3pm in St. James church, and the following week, on Wednesday December 17, a chance for everybody to come and sing ”Carols for All” at 7.30pm,

when we sing (with a few interludes to catch our breath) then afterwards, enjoy seasonal refreshments. The big day The heart of Christmas is of course the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, which makes the Crib Service at St. James on Christmas Eve at 4pm one of the most meaningful. Come early and bring your little ones (dressed as shepherds, kings or angels if they wish). Midnight Communion starts at 11pm at St. James but if you can’t face the late night, there is a 9am Christmas Day Holy Communion at Wanlip or a short “family” service at 10am on Christmas Day. To end 2014 and usher in the New Year a Midnight Watch service starts at Wanlip at 11.30pm on New Year’s Eve. The clergy and people of the parish churches of Birstall and Wanlip wish everyone a happy and blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year. From Beryl McHugh, Parish Churches

Christmas Services & Events at the Methodist Church This Advent season, do take the opportunity to attend some of the various carol services & other events. All are welcome. On Saturday 5th the Kingfisher Chorale will give a Christmas concert at 7.3pm. This is the only event where there is a ticket needed Tel 2677576 to obtain yours. Sunday 7th at 6pm is the Candlelight Carol

Service at 6pm, led by Rev Rachel Parkinson. Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service are holding a Carol Service on Thursday 11th. Wednesday 17th The Riverside School Choir will take part in the Peacelight service A Nativity play will take place on Sunday morning December 21, as part of the 10.30 service led by Mrs Audrey Baker. Roger Wilson will lead the Midnight Holy Communion service on 24th December which starts at 11.15pm Rev Rachel Parkinson will lead a Christmas Day Service at 10am (note the time). Do take the opportunity to share in the real meaning of Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Saviour in Bethlehem some 2000 years ago. Giants’ Appearances There are two opportunities in Birstall to see the Giant Puppets that were featured in last month’s Birstall Post. WI news WE HAD a magnificent turn out with 36 ladies attending our AGM on November 3rd. Only a few years ago Birstall and Wanlip WI was considering closure as numbers were so low but now we are thriving again. We reflected back on the activities of a busy 2014 and the committee was voted in for another year with the inclusion of Margaret Drury. A special vote of thanks was given to Val Deacon for all the extra work she does for us. Andrea and Mick then sang some folk songs before we ended the evening with a buffet supper. Activities for December include a trip to Curve to see the Sound of Music and a Christmas dinner. Our next meeting is on December 1 when Julie Tinley will show us how to make Christmas decorations from a potato and we will exchange Secret Santa Gifts. From Birstall & Wanlip WI

New community hall A NEW £350,000 community hall is planned for Hallam Fields and is expected to be provided next year. Birstall Parish Council will own and manage the hall and it has appointed a project manager and an architect to deliver the building. The single storey building will contain a hall, meeting room and kitchen and will be funded by the section 106 developer contributions associated with Hallam Fields. Birstall Parish Council chairman Ann Marshall said: “We anticipate that the use of the hall will be similar to the use made of the Village Hall – parties, weddings, toddler groups, private functions – and we will be consulting the public early next year about it. We have contacted all the groups that currently use the Village Hall to see if they want to hold any of their sessions in the new building.”

THE BIRSTALL POST DEC 2014

INFO ALMOST HALF of older people say the increasing cost of energy is a major concern this winter. 1 in 3 (32%) older people are concerned about keeping their home adequately warm this coming winter, with the majority concerned about the high cost of energy (70%), according to new research from Age UK. The research – published in November to launch the Charity’s Campaign for Warm Homes – clearly shows that high energy bills and fuel poverty, together with hard-to-heat, energy-inefficient homes are weighing heavily on the minds of older people. Around 5 million over-65s say escalating energy bills is one of their main concerns over the winter months. 1 older person dies every 7 minutes The Charity’s new Older, not colder report outlines the shocking human cost and suffering the fuel poverty crisis is causing. Each winter, 1 older person dies every 7 minutes from cold weather, and excess winter death rates and illness are highest among those living in the coldest homes. Yet sadly, with just under 1 million older people living in fuel poverty, many simply cannot afford to heat their homes to a sufficient temperature in order to keep warm and well. Many deaths could be prevented Many of these deaths and health problems could be prevented if everyone lived in a warm home. This is why Age UK’s Campaign for Warm Homes is calling on the Government to commit to upgrading all homes to meet higher energy efficient standards. The Charity believes this is the only viable long-term solution to fuel poverty, rising energy prices and the resulting winter health problems. Age UK research also shows that two fifths (41%) of older people believe that the Government should do more to ensure UK homes are made more energy efficient, closely followed by energy companies (36%). £1.36bn cost of cold homes Clearly there is a significant cost to an infrastructure project of this scale. Yet in addition to the high number of lives claimed by the fuel poverty crisis, there is also a financial price to pay in terms of increased pressure on local authorities, the NHS and the social care system.

In fact, Age UK estimates that the cost of cold homes to the NHS is around £1.36bn every year. An ambitious energy efficiency programme would not only save lives, it would also reduce associated hospital and care costs; lift millions out of fuel poverty; cut carbon dioxide emissions; stimulate the economy, and create thousands of jobs across the UK. 'Fighting a losing battle' Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “The spectre of struggling to afford to heat their homes this winter is looming large in the minds of millions of older people. Increasing energy costs coupled with poorly insulated homes means the UK is fighting a losing battle against cold weather and it is very difficult for increasing numbers of people to properly protect themselves. “The only longterm solution to this problem is an ambitious programme to bring all our housing up to a high energy efficiency standard. We realise a national infrastructure project of this scale would require major investment; but not only would it reduce illness and deaths among older people, it would also cut associated costs to the NHS, create jobs and growth and help future generations. “No older person should worry that they could die from the cold in their own home. Fuel poverty is a national scandal which has claimed the lives of too many people – both old and young – for far too long and left many more suffering from preventable illness. We want a permanent solution and we believe it is within our grasp, if there is the necessary imagination and political will.”

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Ovarian Cancer Birstall BAG’s wanted to ensure readers are aware of a local Ovarian Cancer initiative taking place in December. Leading health charity, Target Ovarian Cancer, is inviting women from in and around Leicestershire who are living with or have survived ovarian cancer, to attend a Being Together day on Friday 5 December 2014. 477 women from the East Midlands are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and 282 women die from the disease each year. Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all the gynaecological cancers, yet it is a danger that many women are completely unaware of. Being Together is an inspiring and supportive day for women with ovarian cancer, run across the UK by Target Ovarian Cancer. The event provides a unique opportunity to meet others in a

similar situation, compare experiences and share advice. Women attending can choose to take part in a selection of workshops such as stress management or awareness-raising. They will also have the opportunity to question local clinicians and health professionals during a panel session. Women with ovarian cancer often feel very isolated, and for many women that have attended past Being Together days it’s been the first opportunity they’ve had to meet other women with the disease in their area. Sharon Flower, from Birstall, when asked what she wanted to get out of the event, said “Hope. Not just for myself, but for all women out there living with ovarian cancer. This is a great opportunity to bring like-minded women together. Thank you.” The event is free of charge (with lunch and refreshments included) from

Ovarian cancer is cancer arising from the cells in and around the ovary. The ovaries are two small organs located low in the tummy, just above the pubic area. They form part of a woman's reproductive system, storing a woman's supply of eggs. Each month an egg is released from one of the ovaries into the womb ready for fertilisation. The ovaries are also responsible for making the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. There are several different types of ovarian cancer classified by the types of cells and tissue they originate from. Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer Increased abdominal size/persistent bloating – not bloating that comes and goes Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain (that’s your tummy and below) Needing to wee more urgently or often than usual Occasionally there can be other symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, extreme fatigue (feeling very tired) or unexplained weight loss. Any post-menopausal bleeding should always be investigated by a GP. Symptoms will be: Frequent – they usually happen more than 12 times a month Persistent – they don’t go away New – they are not normal for you and may have started in the last year If you regularly experience any of these symptoms – and they are not normal for you – visit your GP.
