Aladdin panto fun FACES ARTS, the Birstall based performing arts company, performed their annual pantomime in the run up to Christmas in front of an appreciative audience in the Palmer Tomkinson Centre at Longslade College. ‘Aladdin’ was the latest in a succession of performances from the Faces Arts students this year. Those taking part were aged between 11 and 16, and meet every Tuesday after school. This year some of the younger children from the Tumble session where also included in the acrobatics dance pieces. “All the children were quite simply amazing” said Jody Chesterton from Faces Arts. “They have worked so hard on this production and the cheers they received from the audiences were nothing more than they deserved. The level of talent we see is hugely encouraging. At Faces Arts we pride ourselves on working with youngsters in the community and I

Bridge over A6 for pedestrians A BRIDGE over the A6 for pedestrians and cyclists will be built by developers Jelson. The bridge is a condition of the planning permission Jelson were granted for the creation of the Hallam Fields development, to be completed before 750 houses of the 900 planned are occupied. 620 dwellings were occupied in October 2014. The proposed bridge is a single span Continued from page 1 Both suspects are described as being black, about 6ft tall and of slim build. They were both wearing dark coloured clothing and balaclavas. They are believed to have run off in the direction of Wanlip Avenue. Detective Constable 2129 Luke Brookes, who is investigating the robbery, said: “The area would have been busy at the time with lots of traffic passing through. If that’s your usual route home, or you were in the area around the time of the robbery, you may have seen what happened or saw the suspects before the incident. “Think back to that night, did you see two men acting suspiciously? If you did call us immediately. Equally, if you have been offered any large amounts of foreign currency or travellers cheques for sale, or know someone who has, we want to hear from you.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the relevant officer on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for the officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number. Petition calls for plans to be scrapped

Pic: Red line shows maximum extent of land within which the planning application boundary will be defined

A PETITION has been started to stop plans for 1650 homes being built at ‘North Birstall’. The houses will be built on land close to the site of the old Bentley’s Roses and largely in the Parish of Wanlip – the proposals also include 15 hectares of employment land. The plans are a feature of Charnwood Borough Council’s Core Strategy which is currently being examined by a Planning Inspector. Simon Sansome is the Charnwood Borough Councillor for the Birstall Wanlip Ward and he has started a petition to have the proposals for the ‘Broadnook Garden Suburb’ removed from the Core Strategy. He said: “We have to stop this development as Birstall will amost be connected with Rothley and another green field area of separation would have disappeared placing Birstall’s identity at risk.” He says that additional houses will put additional pressure on local schools and have an impact on local traffic. “Speaking to a number of residents on the Greengate estate, it can take them 20-30 minutes to get from their driveway to the main A6 during rush hour” he said. “1500 houses will bring at least 1500 more cars adding to our already congested traffic in the villages.” He added: “Action needs to be taken sooner rather than later to protect Birstall from further development. Because of this I have set up an online petition on change.org and there are many shops and pubs in the village where you can sign the petition.” Comments from those people signing the petition include:

• I am signing because I like the way Birstall is at the moment and further development in this area will ruin this village. • As a lifelong resident of Birstall, I can see the massive changes that other recent developments have brought to our "village". Thousands of extra houses without shops/schools/green areas/road improvements have rendered the village centre to a standstill at weekends & caused traffic chaos on the main A6 on weekdays. Surely without the above, developers cannot be serious in adding even more dwellings? This new plan must NOT go ahead without careful thought to the extra pressures it will bring to a community already on the edge. • I live in Birstall and am vehemently against the proposal to direct traffic from the A46 through Wanlip. There are already TWO schools on that road (which is why they put traffic calming measures on there years ago) and now they want to push even more traffic down there. Simply unbelievable. What idiots are coming up with these ideas. • Not only will this affect my family and friends in Birstall with additional traffic, waiting lists at Doctors and Dentists and not enough spaces at the local schools this will also affect the commute to work from all local villagers.

We have lost a lot of fields recently with the area now unrecognisable. The additional houses will cause problems with the flooding in the area as there will be no where for the water to drain. We have had enough new builds in the area, please find another area. Birstall Parish Council submitted its objection to the proposals when the Core Strategy was in its consultation phase. The Council’s statement said: “Traffic along the A6 continues to increase, particularly at peak times. This significantly impacts on our community and its quality of life. The increase in pollution and great difficulty for residents trying to access the A6 from their houses is already generating complaints. “The building of 1500 homes and up to 15 hectares of employment land along with four travelling show people sites will only add to an already overloaded A6” The Parish Council identified that the plans would increase traffic through Wanlip village and along Wanlip Lane. It concluded: “The residents of Birstall deserve that Charnwood Borough Council considers their quality of life. We urge Charnwood to consider other options. Birstall people already feel that Charnwood Borough Council disregards their views.” Shops and pubs where you can sign the petition: The White Horse, Age Concern, The Posy Bowl, Loros, Birstall Fisheries, Dan’s Gents’ Hairdressers, Birstall Post Office, Silly Prices, Peter Astill & Co Solicitors, The Plough.

THE CONSTRUCTION of 1650 new homes in ‘North Birstall’ could start in 2015. Details of the planned development at ‘North Birstall’ have emerged from documents submitted to Charnwood Borough Council by the landowners/developers. The ‘Broadnook Garden Suburb’ is part of Charnwood’s Local Plan which is still at the draft stage, currently being examined by a planning inspector. • the houses will be built close to the site of the old Bentley’s Roses • the land is owned by the PalmerTomkinson Trust, the Cooper family and Leicester City Council • the landowners are working in partnership with housebuilders Barwood Homes and Davidsons Homes • the development will include ‘local day to day shops and services’ and ‘a range of new employment opportunities’ • there will be bus routes through the site and the potential for a rail halt on the GCR line • a wide choice of homes for all income levels will be provided • land within three of the four quadrants defined by the A6/A46 intersection is expected to be included in the application proposals – north west, north east and south east • the majority of the land to be developed is in the Wanlip parish boundary but some falls within Rothley and Thurcaston • there will be at least 1500 homes – up to 1650 – and 15 hectares of employment land in the north west quadrant • a primary school with a capacity of 420 pupils is planned • the ‘Broadnook Centre’ will include local shops, small scale employment uses and a community centre, as well as restaurants, takeaways, and drinking establishments • outdoor sports facilities will include a bowling green and tennis courts •allotments and an arboretum are planned • residential dwellings will be mostly two or 2.5 storey with “three storey for emphasis at appropriate locations” • the build period will be 11 years commencing in 2015, subject to planning permission.

Councillor retires after 16 years service AFTER SERVING 16 years as a Birstall Parish Councillor Neville Mays has decided to call it a day. Neville (80) of Barngate Close was first elected on July 6, 1998. “It is the community of the council I’ve enjoyed, there have been some lovely people” he said. “We’ve had our moments, there have been difficulties, but we have overcome them. “We all like Birstall, we believe in Birstall and we want to do the best for Birstall, and being a councillor has been a pleasure.” Chair of Birstall Parish Council Ann Marshall said: “We are all sad to see Neville go but understand his health will not allow him to carry on. He has been a very loyal servant of the council, has contributed to all council activities and is a thoroughly nice man.” Pic: Fellow councillors and office staff say goodbye to Neville Mays, pictured centre with Birstall Parish Council Chair Ann Marshall

further in the field of chemistry. “The opening of the new Palmer Tomkinson building for post 16 really made the student experience the best you could want. I can still pop in there now and my teachers have always got time for a chat.” Josh recently received a Leicester Mercury Young Achiever award for his success at A level. Longslade College is in Special Measures and mum Julie says the school gets a bad press. She said: “Despite the bad press and three changes of principal Josh still achieved these grades. This shows that no matter where the school is the exam papers are the same and if you are prepared to work you can achieve great results. We are Birstall people and it would be great if more people in Birstall supported their local schools.”

A BIRSTALL parent is singing the praises of Birstall’s schools after seeing her son achieve academic success. Julie Smalley’s son Josh, now 19 and at Leicester University attended Highcliffe, Stonehill and Longslade schools. “He gained in confidence as he progressed through the schools and his post 16 years really saw him come into his own” she said. “The teachers at Longslade for Josh’s subjects were some of the best and were always there and available to offer advice and guidance when he needed it, recognised Josh wanted to learn and were more than happy to help him achieve the success he has gained.”

Josh obtained eight A* GCSEs and two at A grade and his A-levels in summer 2014 were in Maths, Chemistry and Physics, all at A*. He is now studying for a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Leicester University and hopes to go into research and drug development. Josh said “I enjoyed learning here [Longslade]. All of my GCSE teachers were helpful and made lessons interesting. This made choosing my A level subjects more difficult, but if I’m honest the best times were during maths and science lessons and these teachers, par-

Jim White Harold White (Jim) lived in Birstall for 33 years and was a familiar figure and friend to many people. He died suddenly in Exeter on Nov 29, 2014. A member of the Royal British Legion and Birstall Social Club he enjoyed organising social activities as a committee member over the years. His passion was antiques and he travelled extensively, buying and selling, making new friends along the way. In Derbyshire, Jim liked to follow village events and walk in the country with me, his ‘other half’, at every opportunity, from our caravan home. Jim leaves five sons and two daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren

Well here we go again I find myself having a good laugh at the article recently regarding what was laughingly called a "New and improved" bus service to Birstall by Centrebus. I live on the Greengate Estate and also a working person, having to get to work for 9am. The 22B should be at Woodgate Drive at 8.05. Sorry I now find myself laughing out loud again at the "new and improved service" The 8.05 should give us plenty of time to get to work, or you would have thought so. I can assure you it does not. Since the "new and improved service" came into being (about 5 weeks) I have lost count as to the amount of times it has not arrived on time. Indeed it has not turned up at all on three occasions. Each time we have been sold the line of the bus breaking down. I repeat three times in just five weeks. Quite clearly the old rolling stock is not up to the job. I have yet to meet anyone who think the "new and improved service" is working indeed I am led to believe the next bus after the 8.05 which is 9.10 is very rarely on time either. Is it now time we campaigned to get a decent bus company to get the bus routes in Birstall, one that does not take the paying customers for complete idiots and starts treating them with respect. Something Centrebus fail to do and quite honestly have failed to do since they got the route. It seems to many of us on the 22B route just take the subsidary from the council and them to hell with the fare paying passengers. Time for a change me thinks. Sue Hitchcock (miffed bus traveller)

On Tuesday December 9, I fell in the car park of the Co-op Supermarket. I thank my friend Ian who happened to be in the store who took my car home for me. Thank you all very much. Donald

Trouble with your figures? Want someone to walk you through a self assessment?

In the spirit of the season, good will to all men, I wish to offer my warmest thanks to all the volunteers who provide well run and vital services. Without these cheerful, generous and courteous volunteers what facilities would there be in Birstall? Once Birstall had a pool, paid for by the hard work and goodwill of the community, now sadly Birstall has no pool – council run or otherwise. Despite petitions and grants for the pool it was allowed, unprotested by the authorities, to close. Thanks to Councillor Simon Sansome for raising the issue of the pool again. Once there were grit bins near the library, Meadow Lane and Dalby Avenue, now much to the cost of three people (maybe more) including myself, who have fallen and injured themselves on Allington Drive, Dalby Avenue, and Blenheim Road. Does the council really wish to wait until someone is badly hurt – or be sued – before returning the grit bins. Yes, I realise grit bins are frequently used as rubbish bins but with regular maintenance this problem could be overcome. Once we heard rumours of the provision of bus shelters, but these don’t seem to be forthcoming. Again thanks to Cllr Simon Sansome for campaigning. Despite the current cold and wet weather no bus stops have appeared. Finally, congratulations to the Birstall Methodist Church who have raised nearly £8,000 from the Church Festival. Thanks also to the generosity of the Birstall people who supported this – and the hard work of volunteers not being paid a wage. I wonder if Birstall Gala made a profit? If not, why not, clearly it can be done? PS How about a regular neswletter from the Parish Council telling us of their future plans for Birstall. Also where our money is spent and how these decisions are reached. Concerned member of the public. Christine Howe

I hope the person who let her/his dog foul the area around the post box on Wanlip Lane feels proud of themselves. They obviously didn’t think of the poor postman who had to empty the box. Why didn’t you clear it up? There seems to be a lot more dog fouling in this area, if you can afford a dog you can afford poo bags. Fed up resident (name & address supplied)

GCR’s bid for major railway museum A LOTTERY bid for a major railway museum on the edge of Birstall has been re-submitted to the Heritage Lottery fund. The Great Central Railway has bid for £10million to the Heritage Lottery Fund to build the museum. Working in partnership with Leicester City Council and the National Railway Museum in York, the railway plans to open the new attraction at its terminus at Leicester North in 2019. The new museum will be filled with rare locomotives and hundreds of artefacts from the national collection. Managing Director of the Great Central Railway Bill Ford said: “We had some really constructive feedback from the Heritage Lottery Fund Trustees following our last bid and we are confident we have made this visionary project even better! Not only will the museum help

people reconnect with their railway story, sitting right alongside our thriving heritage line it will be a unique attraction. We're confident tens of thousands of people will visit every year.” Work is already underway with local schools and community groups to ensure the project engages with everyone across the city and captures railway memories that might otherwise be lost. 300 short-term construction jobs will be created while the museum is built and 9 full-time posts once open. As part of the bid process an economic impact study has been carried out which demonstrates the museum and railway will be worth £43million for the local economy over five years. In turn this addi-

tional spending could create more than 900 jobs in the area. Annual visitor figures for the railway and museum combined are expected to reach around 230,000. The total cost of the project is expected to be around £16 million. £6 million of match funding would be required alongside the lottery grant. City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "This is a really exciting opportunity to create a railway experience of national standing in Leicester. The museum will house items which are of both national importance and local interest, complementing the nearby National Space Centre and Abbey Pumping Station and helping to enhance the city's reputation as an important visitor destination. It will also create hundreds of new jobs, both during construction and on opening, while providing training opportunities in the rail industry for dozens of young people. We're fully committed to this project and will be working with the Great Central Railway to help them deliver this ambitious scheme.” A striking building is planned to sit right alongside the Great Central Railway's Leicester North station, close to the Greenacres centre. Steam hauled passenger trains will arrive right alongside the exhibition halls. The museum will be connected to the running lines to allow displays to be

changed, locomotives and carriages moved and operated over the tracks of the Great Central. Star exhibits will include V2 class steam locomotive 'Green Arrow' and the sole surviving GCR passenger engine "Butler Henderson" A stylish wooden carriage which is more than a century old will be actively restored in front of visitors demonstrating the craft skills necessary to keep Britain's railway heritage alive. The Director of the National Railway Museum is Paul Kirkman. “We're delighted to be part of this project. Leicester had one of the world's earliest railways," he said. "It was also a hub of the Midland line. When the GCR opened in 1899 it was a key calling point on the high speed railway of the time. We want to put key parts of the national collection on display at the heart of the country for the first time, but just as important we hope to inspire a new generation to get involved in our nations railway story.” The project partners will learn if they've been successful in April 2015. Initially a small grant will be released allowing the plans to be developed further. A successful second round application would see the full grant unlocked with the museum expected to be open around summer 2019.

Parish Council notes

Leicester A&E survey A SURVEY of patients has ranked Leicester Royal Infirmary’s Accident and Emergency department as one of the worst in England.

A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on December 8. Cllr David Gaskell reported that work to extend and refurbish Riversdale Court sheltered housing had begun and would take one year to complete. Councillors discussed the precept for the year 2014/15. Any increase of 2 per cent or more will require a referendum. It was agreed to defer a decision until the January meeting. It was reported that the Edith Murphy Foundation had paid for a new bath at the Age Concern Day Centre in the Village Hall. The Council has agreed rises in the fees it charges for the use of the sports pitches, to bring them in line with other councils in the area. The increases will take effect in April 2015. It was agreed not to increase the hire charges for the Village Hall. It was agreed to increase cemetery fees from April 2015. It was agreed to spend £1342 on the insulation of the loft at the Age Concern Day Centre. The council is considering installing a clock on the front of the Village Hall to commemorate the anniversary of World War I.

House burgled A HOUSE was burgled in Birstall in the early hours of Tuesday December 23 and cash and jewellery were taken. The incident happened at approximately 2.45am in Westgate Avenue. The burglar, who was wearing a black hooded top, gained access to the house through the front of the property. The suspect left the property when the victim, an 80-year-old woman, awoke and shouted at the burglar to leave. Detective Constable 1340 Paul Burchell, who is investigating said: “While we realise the burglary happened in the early hours of the morning, we are appealing for any witnesses, so if you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time, we would like to hear from you. “The gold necklace that was stolen has a distinctive ‘circle of life cross’ pendant and, if you are offered the item for sale in suspicious circumstances, please get in touch.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the relevant officer on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for the officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.

OUR PICTURE shows Revd Rachel Parkinson (left) & Chair of Birstall Parish Council Ann Marshall beside Birstall’s second defibrillator, which has just been installed at Birstall Methodist church. Rachel said: “The Methodist Church is delighted to host this defibrillator, so many people come into this building and many are old and vulnerable.” Birstall Parish Council has paid for the devices: another is planned for the Kingsgate Avenue area and a fourth at Hallam Fields. “They are so important as they could save someone’s life” said Cllr Marshall

Fun firework night A CROWD of over 1200 people watched the Birstall United Juniors FC fireworks display held on Friday November 7. Despite poor weather earlier in the day, a big crowd turned up and enjoyed a display that lasted over 20 minutes and the biggest bonfire in Birstall. There were some small fairground rides for the younger children. The firework display was sponsored by Braunstone Crossroad Motors and performed by a team of professionals from Leicester Fireworks. One of the event organisers, Phil Hughes, said: “On behalf of the club l would like to thank the event sponsors and all the volunteers who helped make the night a huge success. We were a bit worried at 4pm that no one would come, because the weather so bad, but luckily it stopped raining just in time

and the people of Birstall turned out in force to support their only junior football club. “Judging by the comments we received on social media sites, the general consensus seems to be that people thought it was a great display and great value for money. The money raised on will go towards improving the facilities at the club for the kids of this village.” The 2015 fireworks display will take place on Friday November 6 and the club hope to make it bigger and better than 2014. “The event is open to the whole village, not just club members, and so we ask your readers to put that date in their diaries now” said Phil.

Watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out a survey of 45,000 patients nationwide. Leicester is rated in the bottom 10 out of 142 trusts examined. 850 patients in Leicester were given a questionnaire in January, February and March 2014 and 267 responded. The questions aimed to find out how patients rated the service they received as safe, effective, caring and responsive. Leicester’s A&E was rated as average in eight of the 10 categories examined, and below average in two: the way staff spoke to patients and how they conducted medical tests. Patients rated their experience overall as 7.9 out of 10, in line with the national average. The CQC said of the national results: “The survey shows an encouraging picture of patients’ overall experience of A&E. Most patients (80%) told us that their overall experience of attending A&E was good, rated it at seven or above out of 10. “However there is still a long way to go to ensure that patients have the information they need when they leave A&E. It is not acceptable, for example, that 42% of patients receiving new medications were not told about possible side effects or that 22% were not given any information or not enough about their care and treatment.”

THE BIRSTALL POST JAN 2015

Church news Good-bye to 2014 As 2014 passes into history, what will you remember most from the year? For many, it may be the commemoration throughout the country of the start of the Great War in 1914. An amazing number of people made the trip to London to see the river of poppies at the Tower of London, and many more took part in local services, as we did in Birstall, to remember the fallen of that terrible war. This Christmas in many schools young children took as their theme the famous football match in the trenches, when German and British soldiers forgot their enmity for the sake of fellowship on Christmas Eve, and when for a brief few hours it seemed that peace was possible. Sadly, as we all know, that vision of peace on earth, which was the Christmas message, is no nearer now. We still hear constantly of fighting and hostilities throughout the world, if not in Western Europe, as in the two world wars. A clean slate A new year always brings the possibility of “wiping the slate clean” and starting all the things you meant to do last year. Perhaps you have already made some good resolutions and perhaps broken them! Holiday offers fill the TV screen at this time of year too. Plans are already afoot for another of the church’s popular parish holidays in July (contact Sandra on 2677238 if you want to know more). Our social committee is offering two interesting evenings to cheer up the dark nights of winter: at St. James on January 23 at 7pm the film “One Chance” will be showing, the story of a young man whose life was changed after winning the TV programme ”Britain’s Got Talent “. There is no charge for this and refreshments will be served at the interval. On February 27 at Wanlip, there will be another fascinating, illustrated travel talk, this time on Poland, by Sue Ablett, again refreshments are included. Whatever your plans for 2015 may be, the people of our two churches wish you a happy and peaceful New Year. From Beryl McHugh, Parish Churches

on Wanlip Lane during Half-Term week. The first evening performance will be on Tuesday February 17, then nightly until Saturday 21. A matinee will be performed on Saturday afternoon at 2.30. The mens’ pantomime has brought many hours of happiness to Birstall for nearly 70 years. Originally, the late John Valentine wrote and produced this annual stage performance. For a time his wife Jean was the producer. Now his daughters are very involved in the productions. Tickets are still just £5 tel Deborah on 2122513 to book yours. Christmas Festival Result The Methodist Church in Birstall is grateful to all who helped in so many ways at the Christmas Festival. The displays in the church were, as ever, very creative. Following a theme of ‘Christmas Traditions’, the displays were a delight to browse around and admire. Financially, almost £8000 was raised, - almost £500 more than last year. Churches Together In Birstall And Wanlip The Christian churches with premises in Birstall have, over many years, worked together in unison. This has usually been with ‘united services’ in one form or another. It was a few years ago when Christians in Birstall took the bold step of sharing bread and wine all together as they remembered the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples. The Holy Mass of the Catholics, The Holy Communion of the Methodists and the Eucharist of the Anglicans came together as one. Sadly, this wonderful sharing has now lapsed but many pray it may be revived one day. Unity, however still works, but in different ways. Recently those giant puppets were created by members of the Methodist, Anglican & Catholic communities in Birstall. On Sunday afternoon January 18 at 3pm in the Methodist Church there will be a service of celebration for Churches Together in Birstall. All are welcome of any denomination – or none. From Birstall Methodist Church

the funds raised to further their work with adults with learning difficulties. We would also like to say how lovely it was to see those of you who joined us for the Carol Service and, from the collection, we were able to send a donation to help needy people in the Middle East. Proposed meetings During the visitation in the village, a few people have indicated that they would welcome an introduction to the Bible course. If you would like to join these meetings, which are open to individuals of any denomination or religion (or none) and are free of charge, then please contact the phone number given below. We propose to start with answering the questions: how did the Bible come to be written; is it trustworthy; have there been changes and are there contradictions? We would then move on to what the Bible actually says, the content tailored to the needs of the group. Sunday services Our services are held in the Community Room at Highcliffe Primary School, Greengate Lane (LE4 3DL), starting at 10.45am. We are due to return to the school from January 11, 2015. You can be assured of a warm welcome. All at BIBC wish you a very happy New Year and every blessing for 2015. Further information : please ring 0116 2214883. MP to step down BIRSTALL’S MP is stepping down next May after 35 years in parliament.

WI news BIRSTALL AND Wanlip WI met on December 1 for their final meeting of 2014. It was a truly festive occasion with a Secret Santa, mince pies and the making of Christmas wreaths. Using evergreen branches, holly, cones and bows Julie Tinley showed us how to make a foil covered potato into a beautiful wreath and supervised us all as we tried to recreate her example. Some of us went to see the excellent Curve production of the Sound of Music on December 2 and we enjoyed a Christmas dinner together at the Red Lion in Rothley on December 11.

Maxilyn Geary, Christine Warren and Beverley Blackburn have been busy making and selling crafts and have raised over £450 for three charities. Following this success we hope to expand to include all our members in craft making for charity in 2015. Our next meeting at Highcliffe School is on January 12 at 7pm. Conservative MP for Charnwood, Stephen Dorrell (pictured above) was first elected in 1979. He was health secretary during the BSE crisis and a Treasury minister on ‘Black Wednesday’ when the UK pound crashed out of Europe’s ERM. As a bank bench MP he served as chairman of the Health Select committee between 2010 and 2014. On December 1 he took up a role as a senior advisor with KPMG UK’s Healthcare and Public Sector Practice on a part-time basis. In his letter to the Charnwood Conservative Association announcing his decision not to stand at the 2015 General Election he said: “I have decided in consultation with my family that this role represents a great opportunity to carry forward the commitment to improve public services which has been a major part of my life in politics. “This is a bitter sweet moment. While I look forward to working with KPMG, it has been an enormous privilege to serve in parliament since May 1979, first as the MP for Loughborough and more recently as MP for Charnwood.” Stephen Dorrell’s majority at the 2010 election was 15,029.

NHW news

& crime report Now that Christmas is over it is an ideal time to make sure that your valuables are kept safe and secure. There are many ways that this can be done, including some very simple measures. There has been an increase in thefts from vehicles, some vehicles were insecure and items were left on show. Please make sure that you lock your vehicle at all times, even if you are only going to be a few minutes. Do not give an opportunist thief a reason to take your belongings and put items either in the boot, or take them with you. This applies to sheds and garages as well, keep them locked and put all of your items away. Burglars will often use items left lying around as an easy way to gain access to your property, don't make it easy! Also, keep ladders in your shed or garage, or chained and locked. Timers for lights are an ideal way to help protect your property if you are out at night, by making it look like someone is home. Remember, if your curtains are open and no lights are on it is obvious that nobody is home. You can register valuables at Immobilise.com, where you can add photographs of your items for free. Obviously, it is better to keep them safe and secure than suffer the distress of having your belongings stolen. We offer free coding of cycles at our monthly advice shop (the third Saturday of every month 10 until 12). Our next advice shop will be on January 17 at the old council office on Sibson Road car park. Please pop along for advice and security products all sold at cost price. From Birstall and Wanlip NHW committee.

Recorded crime has remained about the same as in October with 45 crimes being reported this month. The main reason for this is a rise in theft from motor vehicle offences with 12 being

reported in November compared to just 6 in October. Please ensure that you are not leaving items on display when you park your vehicles as in several cases they were broken into in order to steal cash and small electrical items that had been left on view. Also please make sure that your vehicle is secure at all times, even if only left for a minute or so. Lead thefts continue to be a problem as these accounted for 4 out of the 9 ‘other theft’ offences that were reported in November (the other 5 were thefts of fuel from the Petrol station). You may have seen on the news recently that a number of churches in the Leicestershire area have been targeted and had lead stolen from their roofs and I am saddened to report that the Church at Wanlip has recently fallen victim to this also. On a positive note however, two males have been arrested and questioned in relation to this theft and the others that have occurred throughout the County and they are currently on Police Bail whilst enquiries continue. In the last week officers have been out delivering advice letters, leaflets, window stickers and property marking pens to around 300 homes on the ‘Gates’ estate. This is in response to three break-ins on this estate during the month, one of which actually occurred during the day when the homeowner was present. This was obviously a very frightening experience for the victim although I am keen to point out that it is very rare for someone to actually break in whilst a house is occupied. Enquiries are ongoing to try and identify the male responsible for this incident as we are obviously keen to find out who he is so that he can be prosecuted. Make sure that you report any suspicious behaviour or activity to the Police on 101 or your local Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator. Improvements to home A £3MILLION project to refurbish and expand a sheltered housing complex in Birstall has begun. Charnwood Borough Council is creating 29 high-quality flats for elderly people at Riversdale Court in Birstall. Councillor Jane Hunt, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regulatory Services at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “We are delighted to be upgrading these homes for our residents. “This represents a significant investment for us, but we are committed to making council homes better for our tenants. I am particularly pleased that we are helping to improve the quality of life for some of our elderly residents. I look forward to seeing the completed flats.” The existing scheme of 25 flats and bedsits will be refurbished and remodelled. Eight new units will also be built, creating 29 one-bedroom flats. Two of the flats will be wheelchair friendly while the car park will also be expanded. The work is being carried out by Willmott Dixon Housing. A spokesman for Willmott Dixon said: “We are delighted to be working on this important project to provide quality homes, tailored especially for people in retirement. “Where possible we'll use local com-

Increase in traffic A RESIDENT of Roman Road is worried about the increased volume of traffic since speed bumps were installed on Birstall Road. To avoid the bumps, vehicles are now using Roman Road and Curzon Avenue to get to and from Red Hill circle. Mrs Dympna Clifford said: “I spoke to a number of residents and everyone agrees, elderly people with grandkids visiting and young couples with children, that due to the speeding traffic we are an accident waiting to happen.” Mrs Clifford wrote to Leicestershire County Council with her concerns. It said the parked cars along the road acted to reduce vehicle speeds as “drivers take more care in a confined setting” and that there had been no personal injury accidents on Roman Road in the last five years.

A PRESENTATION by Carl Gunns at County Hall helped him secure a £525 grant for his boxing gym on Birstall Road. Carl took four young people from the gym with him who took part in this two minute pitch for a County Council Shire Grant and finished top, with 80 per cent of the votes. “I was astonished when they told me no-one had got as much as 80 per cent of the vote before” said Carl. The money will be spent on new gloves and ropes. The gym has now been open for 13 years and is attended by around 120 young people a week. Carl said: “Two men have really kept the gym going, to be honest. They are Colin Pole and Jim Garner. Everyone at the gym owes them a big thank you.”

Primary places THE BIRSTALL Post invited Leicestershire County Council to provide detailed answers to a number of questions about primary school places in Birstall. These included: what is the number of additional places required, where will they be accommodated, how much will be contributed by developers Jelson, will the Department for Education be providing any funding. The original plans for the Hallam Fields development included the provision of a primary school on the site. The County Council’s response was: “We are involved in ongoing legal discussions with the various parties involved in the section 106 agreement for primary provision in relation to Hallam Fields. We’ll be able to provide an update when the discussions, which will clarify how many primary places are needed, where they would be provided and the funding arrangements, are complete. “We are keen to resolve this as soon as possible and will continue to press for an early resolution.”

BIRSTALL ALLOTMENT Society organised an open morning in September. The morning included a best vegetable competition – there were 12 categories and each winner was awarded with a Birstall Allotment Society rosette. The Society recently presented £200 to the County Air Ambulance Trust. The money was raised from the sale of produce at the allotment open day and raffles at society meetings. The sale of horse manure supplied by Kevin and Maria Holderway and family has raised over £600, with the proceeds going to a charity called ‘Wenlow’, a riding school for disabled children.

Eleven self funded volunteers from Syston based charity Inter Care made the trip and visited 13 health care units to monitor the usage of the medical aid sent by the charity. It also gave volunteers the opportunity to experience first-hand the difference their efforts here in the UK really do make in rural Africa. John Winter, who has volunteered for Inter Care for nearly two years, said: “For me, the trip showed me that there’s nothing quite like seeing a shelf in a rural health centre that would be empty of medicines if it wasn’t for the work we do in Syston, to see that what we do really does save lives and relieve suffering.” This year the charity celebrated its 40th anniversary. It has over 60 volunteers helping recycle and donate surplus medicine to health units in Africa. The cost of packaging and distributing the parcels to Africa is the charity’s biggest expense. Some of the volunteers have given talks to local clubs and societies about their experiences of volunteering for Inter Care and visiting clinics in Africa. If you would
