A new bus lane is planned for the southbound section of the A6 between Hermitage Road and Red Hill island. A spokeswoman for Leicestershire County Council said: “The development of Hallam Fields included a requirement to introduce a bus lane along the A6 towards the Red Hill island. We have been employed by Jelsons to design and consult on the scheme and are in discussions over its placement. Initial proposals use the inbound nearside lane. Village wide yard sale

THE BIRSTALL POST AUG 2015

MORE THAN 230 homes in Birstall took part in the third Big Birstall Yard Sale on July 4. Organised by Fiona Barnes of Gwendolin Avenue, the event saw hundreds of people touring the village on a sunny summer Saturday looking for bargains. Appreciative comments on the event’s facebook page included this from Janet Gamble: “We had a fabulous afternoon and found some great bargains. All the stallholders were lovely and we felt the community spirit was wonderful.” Kathryn Vivers said: “We had a fantastic day, I bought loads of lovely things and we really enjoyed stopping off at the Methodist church café for a drink and something to eat.” Fiona Barnes said: “Amazing community spirit from every direction, people smiling and carrying round their treasures – makes me feel very lucky to live in Birstall. A huge thank you to all at the Co-op and the Methodist church for the support throughout.” Raffle tickets on sale at the stalls raised a total of £2246 for this year’s charities: Birstall Methodist Pre-school, Rainbows, Takeover Radio and Carl Gunns’ Gym. Society spokesman Mike Smith said: “We felt the clock is a community project that everyone in the community would gain from. It is something that will be here in years to come that will remind us of the fallen of two world wars. I think it looks magnificent.” In 1932 and aged 5, Mike attended the Village Hall when it was a school. “If the clock were here when I was at school I would have been on time more often” he said. Birstall Parish Council paid for the preparatory work to allow the installation of the clock to go ahead, and the Birstall Royal British Legion provided details of the Legion’s colours of blue and gold so they could be matched on the clock’s face and hands. Shortly before the clock was installed Cllr Marshall painted all the railings outside the front of the Village Hall and the council’s estates team erected hanging baskets.

House hit by lightning A BIRSTALL home was set on fire when it was struck by lightning. The house on Kingsgate Avenue was hit during a lightning storm in the early hours of Saturday July 4. Neighbours heard a loud bang. One resident said: “There was thunder and lightning all around through Friday night but the one which hit this house was so close it was like an explosion and woke everyone up in the area. There was also s strong burning smell in the air.” The house was unoccupied at the time and neighbours called the emergency services who arrived to put out the fire. The new occupants of the house, the Baratheepan family, had moved all their furniture into the house the previous day and were due to move in the day the lightning struck. A house in Barrow Road, Quorn was also hit that night and set on fire. The first floor of the home was gutted by the blaze and it took the emergency services an hour to put out the fire. An elderly couple were evacuated. During the storm, lightning also struck homes in Cumbrian Way, Shepshed, Graves Way, Anstey and Kingsdale Road, Leicester. Birstall Parish Council organised the meeting at the Village Hall which was attended by residents of Birstall Road and Stuart Bullen from the County Council’s Environment and Transport Department. The County Council have produced a draft proposal for three new speed cushions. These would be located near the junction with East Road, Freehold Road and Kilby Avenue. Both the council and residents agree that speeding is an issue on the road, and there was a discussion about the best ways to reduce speed. Any proposals would have to be affordable and comply with regulations and guidance from the Department of Transport. The most favoured suggestion was a speed camera but Mr Bullen said Birstall Road would not rank high enough to justify installing one. Several people commented that the existing speed cushions on the road were ineffective but were told that speed tables that go the full width of the road are no longer installed. The Vehicle Activated Speed signs were ignored by motorists, said residents. Comment was made that since the removal of the speed cushion near the junction with Church Hill, speeding had increased. Summer Cricket club’s activities open evening for kids

ON THE warm and sunny evening of Friday July 10 Birstall Village Cricket Club hosted a Junior Open evening.

FUN, LOW-COST activities to keep children occupied are taking place at Leicester’s museums over the school summer holidays. New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is hosting arts and crafts activities for children of all ages on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the holidays, usually from 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm. Activities are themed around the museum’s galleries, such as the new and exciting Secret Egypt exhibition and Wild Space animal displays. Every Friday from 17 July until 21 August, New Walk Museum will also be running free drop-in sessions called Secret Egypt. Visitors will get the chance to handle replica artefacts, find out more about mummification and learn about the everyday life of an ancient Egyptian. And anyone who would like to ‘meet the beasts’ can visit Belgrave Hall and Gardens on Wednesday 5 August, when you can come face to face with a snake, lizard or tarantula. Step inside the Victorian police cells and have a go in the stocks at the Guildhall on Thursday 6 August, when the museum hosts a ‘crime and punishment’ day, or join in with an afternoon of children’s storytelling of Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories at Jewry Wall Museum on Thursdays 6, 13 and 20 August. Back by popular demand, Belgrave Hall will hold the Great Belgrave Garden Party on Wednesday 12 August, with garden games, craft activities and falconry. On Thursday 13 August, children can build their very own hand-powered beam engine at Abbey Pumping Station. There’s also a ‘Round the Chimney’ compass trail. The same day (13 August) sees a Knights and Princesses creative day at the Guildhall, while on Tuesday 18 August, Abbey Pumping Station hosts a papercraft children’s day. Young visitors can dress up for a Fairies and Superheroes day at Belgrave Hall on Wednesday 19 August, or create castles from clay at a fun day at the Guildhall on Thursday 20 August. Abbey Pumping Station will hold a ‘wizarding wonders’ themed fun day on Tuesday 25 August, with the chance for children to make their own broomstick or wand. Admission to all the museums is free, but there is a charge for children’s activities – typically around £2.50. Exact details and times of each event can be found on the website, www.visitleicester.info. Click on ‘arts and museums’.

The free event was attended by 50 boys and girls aged between 4 and 12 years. All participated in cricket skills coaching under the direction of players of the club and supported by A M Sports Coaching. The two hour session finished with a game of Kwik cricket. Food and soft drinks were kindly donated by Waitrose. Birstall Village Cricket Club will be

hosting a second Junior Cricket Open Evening on Friday August 21 from 5pm. All abilities are welcome – there is no need to book, just turn up.

Grant funding transforms Birstall club AN INVESTMENT of more than £100,000 over the last four years has transformed a local football club. Birstall United’s Meadow Lane ground has been improved with new changing rooms, a newly re laid pitch, perimeter fencing and a resurfaced car park. A new 50 seater stand is under construction. “Comments we’ve had from residents is that it looks like a brand new club, and to us it feels like a brand new club” says Chairman Gary Fox. Improvements to the club began four years ago when vandalism was a problem. “All we were doing was coming here and fixing things” said Gary. “We

Pic: Club Chairman Gary Fox

were all fed up with fighting problems and decided we wanted to get the club decent again and make it a venue the village can be proud of.” The first priority was securing the ground with new fencing which got started with a £2000 donation from Carl Gunns. Then a successful bid for £50,000 awarded by sport England’s Inspired Facilities enabled the club to

finish the fencing and have the new changing rooms built. A further grant of £22,000 from the Edith Murphy Foundation paid for the car park to be resurfaced and other grants have helped pay for a new pitch to be laid in 2014 and landscaping improvements at the ground. Securing a new 25 year lease on the

site with the co-operation of Birstall Parish Council has helped the club when applying for grant money, as many organisations require a long lease before they will award any funding. Gary has been involved with the club for forty years, first as a player, then manager and now chairman. “It’s the biggest club in the village and we are all

proud of it” he said. “What we’d like is to encourage greater use of it by the community, either as a facility for hire or by the public coming along and supporting us on match days.” The club house has a 30 space car park, a bar, and is suitable for parties, meetings and use by sports clubs. Membership for a year is £5 or £7.50 for families. Attendance on match days is £3 or £1.50 for pensioners to watch the first team – second team matches are free. Riverside Birstall’s award winning couple link to Leicester A BIRSTALL couple have received an award for their work supporting an African orphanage.

PLANS FOR a major programme of work to improve access to Leicester’s riverside have been announced. Leicester City Council has teamed up with the Environment Agency and the Canal & River Trust to help enhance the river corridor through the city, as part of a wider programme of work to reduce flood risk. A new cycle link along the river between Loughborough Road and Thurcaston Road will be created and plans are being drawn up to improve and extend the cycleway between the river and the Great Central Railway. The Environment Agency will also undertake a five year, £6million programme of flood relief in the Abbey Meadows area from next year. This will include culverts under Thurcaston Road and Loughborough Road, new cycle links, creation of new wetland and woodland areas, and other environmental improvements. The Canal and River Trust will improve the existing towpath along the Grand Union Canal from the city centre to Watermead Park. The programme also includes creating better access to the riverside at Sock Island, environmental improvements around Willow Brook, restoration of the old, redundant mill race at Frog Island, and new boat mooring alongside Friars Mill. The programme of improvements has been awarded up to £1.5million from the Leicester and Leicestershire enterprise Partnership (LLEP) Local Growth Fund, with £850,000 of this earmarked for a first phase of projects along the River Soar and Grand Union Canal due to begin over the next year. The improvements are being match-funded by the Environment Agency, which has been awarded £33 million of government funding for a five year programme of flood risk management in the city.

David and Joy Bark, of Queensgate Drive, were presented with the ‘Alan Morley Service Above Self’ award by the Wreake Valley Rotary Club. Since their first visit to the Hotpec orphanage in the Cameroon in 2007, the couple have funded and organised the construction of a new baby unit, a volunteer and training centre and a water supply. David Bark said: “The award was a total surprise and out of the blue. We are surprised to have been considered for the award. Our friends at HOTPEC in Cameroon are so delighted that our work on their behalf has been acknowledged. However we could not have

achieved what we have without the help of many individuals and groups who have responded to our appeals.” Work has just started on sinking a borehole at the orphanage to supply fresh water for the children and the local community. The existing water supply has been unreliable and rationed to three hours per day, three days per week. The award from the Rotary club came with a cheque for £200 for the Bark Foundation. A spokesman for the club said: “David and Joy continue to work tirelessly to continue this amazing work.” Pic: the borehole at the orphanage

Red Hill visitors Good to hear that Sir Peter Soulsby still cares about looking after the City Council coffers. Apparently the Red Hill roundabout will only be blocked to trespassers 'when all three traveller sites (Meynells Gorse, Greengate Lane and Thurcaston Road) are full'. I can only assume that the funding for such work on the roundabout is dependant on part of the rent paid by those using the sites. If that's correct, then it is micro-budgeting at it's best, but there must be bigger financial issues to focus on. Just one worry about Sir Peter's logic....what happens when the site has some vacancies at a later date and after the barriers have been put in place? Is this another example of the City Council's divisive attitude towards those who choose to pay their local taxes elsewhere? B Hughes, Birstall

Bats I write once more to report the progress of my bat survey. I must admit that this year I have seen no bats in my garden. I have seen them in other years three doors along from where I live, but to date there has been nothing that I have seen over my garden. I now have about 25 records from your readers; many of these come from the areas bordering the Lakes, as may be expected, and relatively few from the other side of the Loughborough Road. I would be interested in hearing more from the Fielding Road area. I am particularly interested in the Gates estate, as there are few trees there and so roosts would be expected to be in houses. I hope to interest someone with an electronic device that detects bats to come around soon and see what species he/she can pick up. If you see a strange person, therefore, listening to squeaks coming from an electrical contraption up your way, please remember that it could be someone detecting bats. Dr D A C McNeil

Top stylist Many ladies have benefitted over the years from Jackie's skills at the Restyle Hairdressers (Windmill Avenue) and now, after an absence of several months due to preventative treatment for cancer, Restyle have welcomed Jackie back. It may be that some folk are unaware of her return. Speaking for myself, it is rare to find a hair stylist whom I could confidently recommend but Jackie is one such. An advantage of her salon is you are never kept waiting (!) and everyone is friendly and helpful. J Bunkall

It is nice to be recognised for all the hard work we put in over the year not just by ourselves but by the whole practice team at Firs Dental in Birstall. Villagers Time to enter village bake off check speeds WARNING LETTERS have been sent to speeding motorists after volunteers monitored vehicle speeds in the village in June. Throughout the month a Community Speed Watch scheme organised by Neighbourhood Watch operated in Birstall. A group of twelve volunteers, working mainly in groups of three, conducted twenty-seven one-hour sessions monitoring traffic speed in the village. The equipment, training and support were given by the Community Speed Watch Team at County Hall. A spokesman for the group said: “The first week’s figures showed that the great majority of speeding drivers were on Birstall Road and Greengate Lane, so later sessions concentrated on those roads. Greengate Lane has the additional issue of a 20 mph limit when the school crossing patrol is operating. Wanlip Lane was significantly affected by roadworks throughout the month and traffic-flow there was not typical.” Vehicles exceeding 37 mph (27 mph in the school crossing zone) were logged and daily returns were sent to the Police. A total of 270 vehicles were reported and 154 were identified by them as suitable for further action. Warning letters were sent to the registered owners informing them that they had been recorded breaking the speed limit. The spokesman added: “The scheme was welcomed by most members of the public although, sadly, a few were a little less friendly. There were a few drivers who appeared to take exception to being monitored but most either ignored us or gave us a friendly wave or smile. “We do not expect any effect we had on drivers’ behaviour, prompted by the sight of residents in high visibility jackets checking their speed, to last for very long. But drawing attention to the speed limit should make some drivers more aware of how they should be driving, especially since the next time they are checked, it is more likely to be by the Police who will issue a summons that results in a fine and penalty points.” It is hoped to repeat the exercise, either later this year or early next year. The possibility of running a scheme for Wanlip Parish is also being explored.

SUMMER IS in full swing and that only means one thing; it’s time to dust off those baking tins, perfect your pastry, and prepare for the biggest Great Birstall Bake Off yet! Now in its third year, the event will be hosted once again by the White Horse. Beccy Kay, Founder of the White Horse’s Great Birstall Bake Off, said: “After the huge success of last years Bake Off we are extremely excited about what the bakers of Birstall will offer us this year. We had incredible talent from both junior and adult entries and from people who had never baked before to those with more experience. Everyone who got involved either through baking or attending the coffee morning all had a wonderful time and ultimately we raised a superb amount of money, £1023 and nearly double the previous year, for Macmillan. So please get your aprons on, even if you think you're 'not good enough' because it's a whole lot of fun and we want to make even more for a great cause this year!” Baking categories are set to include: Cupcake, Cake, Bread, Sweet Bake, Savoury Bake, Biscuit, Decoration and Under 16's. The judges were astounded by the variety in the 2014 Savoury category and are hoping for more of the same in 2015. Mr Allen of Allen's Family Bakery has once again agreed to donate yeast to any entrant wishing to bake bread. And with the event going from strength to strength, this year there'll be plenty of entertainment to ensure the day raises as much money as. So if the allure of some of Birstall's best cakes isn't enough, there'll be garden party games, face painting, a bouncy castle and live music all on Sunday September 20 at the Macmillan World's Biggest Coffee Morning at the White Horse. The judging panel will be following the WI guidelines which judge on characteristics such as texture, appearance and flavour.

Peter’s commando spirit A BIRSTALL man is taking part in a charity challenge reserved for the military’s most elite force. Peter Gilbert (42) will come face to face with one of the most difficult training terrains encountered by the Royal Marines when he takes part in the 2015 Survive The Yomp challenge on September 12. Part of the Commando Spirit Series of fundraising challenge events to raise £1M for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, the 30 mile training exercise is normally only experienced by Royal Marines Commandos. Peter, a self employed landscape gardener, aims to complete the event in under 8 hours while carrying 38 lbs of equipment – the same test that Royal Marine recruits must pass to win the Green Beret. Peter said: “The Commando Spirit Appeal really struck a chord and when I heard about this challenge I thought

now is the time for me to sign up and commit to take part. It’s a once in a lifetime experience that will push me to the absolute limit but the thought of raising so much money for such a worthwhile cause will give me the willpower to get through. “I’ve already had a lot support from family, friends and colleagues and now I’m hoping the people of Birstall will get behind me too and sponsor my efforts” He added: “I am really looking forward to the opportunity of experiencing just a little of what the Royal Marine Recruits have to undertake during their training. Also, it gives me a chance to raise some funds for the Royal Marines own charity, and give something back to the guys who put themselves at risk for us.” The event takes place in Scotland, near Spean Bridge, on the same route used by the Marines Peter has been training since January 2 with outdoor trail running, swimming, cycling and gym work. Organised by the Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley, the event was in aid of the cancer charity Birstall BAGS. A range of runners in terms of age and ability competed on the flat tracks which circle the park’s lakes. The men’s five mile run was won by Anthony Woodward, and the ladies winner was Amber Lester. In the 3 mile run, first past the post in the men’s was Aaron Nicholson and in the women’s the winner was Florine Hiersemenzel. For the first time this year a Veteran’s trophy for the first over fifty in the five mile race was awarded. The worthy recipient was Bruno Nikoloff of Birstall Running Club who has entered the race

every year since its inception. One of the rotary organisers, Chris Battye, said: “We are delighted with the turnout for this community event in aid of a local charity. The run seems to grow yearly and will be held again in July 2016. It is envisaged a profit of around £2500 will be made.” He added: “We took the opportunity on the night to present Park Ranger Dale Osborne with a cheque for £400 towards a reedbed environmental project which he is undertaking. This is to thank him and his colleagues for allowing us to use the park as our venue for the last several years.”

We are able to support people to a better future by helping them in the short term to put food on the table and to assist them find a way forward out of the crisis.” Examples of what the project has been able to help with over the last year include: • Chasing the council to complete vital repairs to a rental house that had been outstanding for over a year • Getting a young family’s gas reconnected to ensure heating in the depths of winter • Supporting a family having major issues with neighbours • Going to court with a family to help them avoid being evicted from their house • Being able to provide food to individuals and families who have not eaten for several days In addition, the linked Soar Valley Community Money Advice Centre can offer advice on debt, benefit entitlement, costsaving ideas and budgeting. Tim Jackson said: “It has been fantastic to be able to help so many people over the past 10 months on their journey. Life can be a challenge for all of us at times and we feel privileged to support people when the need gets too great. We have an amazing team who work closely together to support all those who visit us. “We are tremendously grateful to the local supermarkets and their customers who have donated food. When you shop

Birstall golf club has an outstanding record in this prestigious competition, having won it nine times in the past 25 years, and produced both the winning individual and the winning team in past years – most recently doing the double in 2010. Jack Merry came closest helping the club repeat that feat, finishing second in the individual competition with rounds of 72 and 69 for a two round total of 141 (one under par), just a single shot behind winner, Market Harborough’s Martin Anderson (68-72140). Merry’s score combined with those of Scott Wormleighton (69–74-143; tied 5th in the individual competition) and Steve Sansome (75-69-144 – tied 7th) for a threeman score of 428, against Cosby’s 430. The team will now represent Leicestershire and Rutland at the Champion Club tournament, being staged at Brancepeth Castle G C, County Durham, on September 19 and 20. NHW news

& crime report WE HAVE unfortunately had a rise in recorded crime during June, up

News from the churches FOR LEICESTERSHIRE residents, August tends to be the month when the rest of England goes away on holiday! If you haven’t already done so, it may be an opportunity to take your family to see the Richard the Third exhibition - an idea to keep the children interested, if they start to get bored as the summer holidays draw to a close. They – and you - can’t fail to be impressed too by a look inside the cathedral, seen so often on the television in recent months, where Richard’s body lies at last in peace. Another alternative for a day out is the coach trip to Lichfield, organised by the Church social committee for Saturday August 22. Lichfield is a delightful market town with a magnificent cathedral, as well as shops, eating places etc. You can also join an optional guided tour round the cathedral for £6.50. As the town is not far away from Leicester the coach journey (£14) is relatively short. To book or to find out more ring Gill Pope on 0116 2675086. Then, as already written about in this column last month, there is the annual Church Garden Party on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, and this year the proceeds will be shared by the church and the Alzheimer’s Society. The fete takes place on St. James’ Church lawn, on Church Hill, Birstall from 2-4pm (or in the church if the weather turns wet). Raffle tickets are already in circulation or can be bought on the afternoon , with some excellent prizes to be won. See you there! From the Parish Churches Vacancies at the Methodist Luncheon Club Each Wednesday about 40 members and helpers gather to enjoy a delicious meal and good company. Most of the members are Senior Citizens who are glad of the opportunity to meet together socially and enjoy a traditional two course home cooked meal plus tea or coffee. At present the Luncheon Club can accommodate a few more members and are also able to offer transport for 2 extra passengers on the mini-bus. The cost is £6. If you are interested contact Mary (2672606) or Janet (2671471). From Birstall Methodist Church Availability We do not have any special courses or meetings during August as it is a holiday period but if anyone wishes to discuss aspects of Christianity or its answers to ‘life’s big questions’, then please contact the number given below. Sunday Services We are not able to use the Community Room at Highcliffe Primary School, Greengate Lane (LE4 3DL) during the school holidays but we still meet for worship, so please ring for venues. We are due to resume our Sunday morning services at the school from 6th September, starting at the usual time of 10.45am. For further information please ring 0116 2214883. From Anne Taylor, Birstall Independent Baptist Church

This is mainly due to a rise in damage and damage to motor vehicle offences, of which we have had a total of 16, mainly relating to windows being smashed with stones or small rocks. These are happening all over the village, with incidents being reported on Roman Road, Gwendolin Avenue, Wanlip Lane, Birstall Road and Loughborough Road to name but a few. With reports being spread over such a wide area it is proving difficult for us to target our patrols to anywhere in particular, so please can I ask you to contact us if you have any information as to who may be responsible for doing this, or if you should witness anyone throwing stones at vehicles or houses. We have received several complaints recently about drugs being used in various parts of the village & we are obviously keen to deal with this issue. Earlier this month we executed a drugs warrant at an address & recovered a quantity of cannabis and money, which has been seized whilst investigations continue. A male was also arrested and is currently on Police bail. Please can I ask that you contact us on 101 if you suspect that people are using illegal drugs so we can try to attend the area and catch those responsible. It also helps us to build up an intelligence picture as to where & when the activity is happening. At the beginning of the month we received several reports whereby elderly residents were being contacted by a male pretending to be from the Metropolitan Police, telling them that there had been suspicious activity on their bank accounts. He told them they needed to transfer money into another account in order to avoid having money stolen and gave them details of this account. The male came across as very believable as several residents were unfortunately fooled into transferring money. Dog owners’ group A SOCIAL group for sighthound owners that started a year ago on facebook now has 330 members. ‘Leicester Sightounds’ was founded by Olwen Guildford of White Horse Lane, Birstall. She said: “About this time last year I had an idea of starting a facebook page for owners of dogs in the sighthound group which includes Afghan Hounds, Borzois, Deerhounds, Greyhounds, Whippets, Salukis and Lurchers, to name but a few! As I am not exactly internet ‘savvy’ I managed to create a page but struggled to move it further. “I appealed on the page for help to get the group going and my wish was granted in the form of Katie Munden. Katie, being considerably younger than myself had fantastic knowledge of all things internet and stepped in with great enthusiasm. All of a sudden our group was born. “My original aim was to organise social walks all around the county to provide an opportunity for like minded people and dogs to get together and share experiences. The group membership has grown to 330 and completely exceeded my original expectations.” She added: “As well as fantastic walks in many different locations we have also found that the group provides a support network for people who may be having problems with their dogs. Sighthounds make great loyal companions but have their own idiosyncrasies which inexperienced owners can struggle with. As we have many experienced owners in the group we are often able to ‘iron out’ potential problems.” One of the groups regular walks is around Watermead Country Park on Wednesdays. As a breed group these dogs often find themselves in rescue organisations, especially greyhounds, which are often surplus to requirement if they are unsuccessful on the track or retired due to injury. The group has taken to raising

funds to help organisations involved in rehoming dogs and have donated almost £1000 to help with vet bills, kennelling and feeding. This money has been raised by a combination of selling group merchandise, an online dog show, hosting a dog show at Blaby Fun day and other activities. The group is holding its first Leicester Sighthounds Fun Day and Dog Show on August 16, at Oakfield Park in Blaby from 12noon to 6pm. There will be 12 classes with rosettes to fifth place and a trophy for best in show. It is open to all breeds. “We are hoping it will be a great day for all the family with Police and Fire Rescue in attendance, bouncy castles, fairground rides and a great variety of stalls” said Olwen.

THE BIRSTALL POST AUG 2015

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Achieving World-Class Cancer Outcomes: a Strategy For England An independent task force has put together and released this report that outlines the priorities necessary to help the NHS achieve world-class cancer outcomes. Birstall BAG’s wanted ‘to keep you up to speed’ with these possible changes; knowing what you’re entitled to can radically impact on your ability to navigate the health care system. Let’s hope you don’t need it but just in case 280,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in England in 2013/14 and this is expected to reach more than 300,000 by 2020, and more than 360,000 by 2030. One in two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives. This hike in cancer cases, driven largely by the UK’s ageing population, means that NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure. Resolving the pressure has been a key focus for the Taskforce. The six strategic priorities are: A radical upgrade in prevention and public health. The strategy outlines how the NHS should work with the Government to improve public health, including adopting a new tobacco control strategy within the next 12 months, and a national action plan on obesity. The Taskforce wants to see a reduc-

tion in smoking from 18.4 per cent now, to less than 13 per cent by 2020. A national ambition to achieve earlier diagnosis. The ambition set out is that, by 2020, 95 per cent of patients referred for testing by a GP are definitively diagnosed with cancer, or cancer is ruled out, and that patients get this result within four weeks. This requires a significant increase in diagnostic capacity, giving GPs direct access to key investigative tests, and the testing of new models which could reduce the burden and reliance on GPs. Currently, patients urgently referred for suspected cancer by their GP need to be seen by a specialist within 14 days of referral, but no guidance exists for when patients can expect to get the results. Patient experience on a par with clinical effectiveness and safety. The strategy recommends giving all consenting patients electronic access to all test results and other communications involving further care by 2020. Patients should also have access to a clinical nurse specialist or other key worker to help coordinate their care. The NHS must continue to develop and adopt meaningful ways to measure a patient’s experience, including the annual Cancer Patient Experience Survey. Transformation in support for people liv-

ing with and beyond cancer. By 2020 every person with cancer should have access to elements of a ‘Recovery Package’ – a comprehensive plan that outlines treatment as well as post-treatment support and care. A national quality of life metric should be developed by 2017 to ensure better support for people after treatment has ended. Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) must ensure they commission appropriate End of Life care, in accordance with NICE guidelines and the Choice Review. Investment to deliver a modern high-quality service, including: • A replacement plan for radiotherapy • A permanent and sustainable model for the Cancer Drugs Fund to help patients get access to innovative cancer treatments; • A nationally-commissioned, regionallydelivered, molecular diagnostics service, to guide more personalised prevention, screening and treatment; • Plans to address critical deficits in the cancer workforce. Overhauled processes for commissioning, accountability and provision. Clearer expectations need to be set by the end of 2015 for how cancer services should be commissioned. By 2016, a network of Cancer Alliances should be established across the country. These will bring together key partners at a local level, including patients. The Alliances would use a dashboard of key metrics to address variation and support service redesign. The Taskforce has recommended that a National Cancer Team (NCT) should oversee the delivery of the Strategy. Clearly the emphasis on patient and family experience of care is going to increase. Your stories and experiences are very powerful, please take every opportunity to link with our health care providers to help shape and develop our local cancer services.
