Florence’s hair raising charity cut A SEVEN year old Birstall girl has donated her long locks to the Little Princess Trust. Florence Joyce of Went Road said she was “feeling excited but a little bit anxious” as she took her seat in the chair at Annie’s Salon, putting her hair in the expert care of stylist Annie McKenna. “It’s all for a really good cause” said Annie. “I think it’s really nice that children of Florence’s age want to help others. The Little Princess Trust make wigs from the donated hair for children undergoing treatment for cancer. Florence, who has a friend who had cancer, said: “I think children feel really sad when they lose their hair and I hope they feel happy when they get a wig.” Friends and family looked on as Annie cut off Florence’s hair and restyled her with a bob. A raffle organised by Annie at her Went Road salon as well as donations to a justgiving page have helped raise £500 for the Little Princess Trust. www.justgiving.com/florenceshaircut Pic: Florence with stylist Annie McKenna

Gala: 2017 changes BIRSTALL GALA will be a one day event in 2017, held on Saturday August 5. Birstall Parish Council organise the gala, now in its sixteenth year, and made the decision due to the difficulties of managing a two day event and in a bid to offer an improved more family friendly gala next year. Councillors discussed the future of the gala at a council meeting on August 8, having received a 14 page debrief pack containing feedback reports from first aiders, the police, private security, fairground operatives, Leicester Sound and Lighting, the Mayor of Charnwood, parish council staff and comments made by the public on social media. The report identified: • problems of underage drinking, especially on the Saturday • young people fighting on Saturday • drug taking • on Saturday, a number of young people collapsed the barrier at the front of the stage knocking over five lighting stands smashing the lights. This caused the main computer panel to blow. Cost of damage over £1000. • On Sunday, children using the stage lights as targets for their water guns. Were told to stop, but parents refilled the water guns and let them carry on • drunken behaviour in front of the stage during the concert on Sunday • young people kicking footballs at Continued on page 2

the catering vans and when asked to stop used abusive language. During one incident hot oil was splashed and a table knocked over. • one 14 year old had to be taken to hospital after he drank too much and fell over hitting his head • a girl was found unconscious in a portable toilet • negative comments on social media about antisocial behaviour, not enough stalls, expensive rides • positive comments on social media about a good community event worth supporting, good music • more volunteer help is needed • security guards with the power to evict people from the park needed Speaking at the Council meeting on August 8, Sergeant Rod Smart said the event was policed by two PCSOs, one PC and himself. Saturday was “the more problematic day”, and young people from Beaumont Leys were the main problem, he said. He said the police had confiscated alcohol from young people and poured it away. He said: “The gala is a cracking event and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on it over the years.” Cllr John Jenkins said he thought the

council should not continue with the gala. “These reported incidents are quite serous – how can it be policed? Would you really want to take your family to an event like this and get threats of violence.” Chairman Ann Marshall asked how the event could be managed to make it better. Over 16 years it has grown into a large scale event that takes up a lot of staff time and is a challenging event to manage. Cllr Geoff Green said: “We should continue with the gala, but there’s not enough for a family to do to keep them there. When there’s one day and it’s all for young people than you will get problems.” Comment was made that Birstall Rugby club might be interested in getting involved with the gala in some way, as

they organised a two day festival for the first time this year, which was held at the Cedars Academy. Cllr Tony Fowler proposed that the gala in 2017 be a one day event on the first weekend in August. Councillors voted 6 in favour, 5 for a two day event, so the motion was carried. The Council’s events committee will now consider what attractions might be offered in 2017 and make recommendation for the full council to consider. Parish Council Chairman Ann Marshall said: “We view the gala as a day for the whole community to get together and enjoy themselves. It’s grown into more of a festival than a gala and has become too big to manage by the Parish Council alone. “We want to see it return to a family centred event, like it was when it started in 2000.” The 2017 gala will retain the familiar stalls, fairground rides, proms in the park concert and fireworks.

The CPA, which helps the public to identify safe reliable contractors to carry out home improvements, awarded its 5 year Membership Achievement Award to CWC. Membership of the CPA means that customers have their deposits and guarantee underwritten by the organisation. Mandy Manning from CWC said: “We put the interests of the customer first and we won’t compromise on our attention to detail or the quality of the materials we use. “Everything is carefully project managed by us personally and we do everything we can to ensure the work we do enhances your home.”

Centre offers help SYSTON AND District Volunteer Centre is looking to increase the take-up of the services it offers in Birstall. “We are anxious to expand and promote our services, especially to the residents of Birstall, who appear to be largely unaware of the wide range of benefits available to them through the Centre” said Paul Turner, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “A very small percentage of requests currently received are from the area which falls clearly within our catchment area. We are therefore anxious to explain to the elderly, infirm, disabled, lonely or isolated in that area how easily we can help them to be as independent as possible, directly assisting them to continue to play a full and active part in family and community life.” He added: “Our core service is the provision of individual and group transport to meet the varied needs of our clients. Our social car service provides door-to-door personal transport by private car to doctors, hospitals, dentists, hairdressers, shops, family and friends, helping to sustain independence. With the benefit of a team of volunteer drivers, this service is much cheaper and much more convenient than using a taxi.” With the help of staff at Dunelm, the volunteer centre has organised a leaflet drop in the village. Paul said: “We are extremely grateful for the active support of Dunelm staff, enabling us to drop an explanatory leaflet into all homes in the Birstall conurbation. Dunelm are to be congratulated for their continued positive commitment to the welfare of the local community in which they have prospered since their humble beginnings in 1979.”

Academy sponsors TWO ACADEMY proposers have expressed an interest in operating the planned new primary school at Hallam Fields. The 210 place school is expected to open in September 2017. The expressions of interest have come from the Lionheart Academies Trust and the LEAD Academy Trust. The Lionheart Trust currently operate all of Birstall’s schools. The County Council has recommended both to the Secretary of State for Education as suitable sponsors.

Charity donation transforms hospital rooms SUPPORTERS of a Birstall cancer charity have helped raise enough funds to see the Urology Department at Leicester General Hospital transformed. The £12,000 donation from Birstall BAGS went towards the cost of a new interior design for the theatre waiting areas and refurbishment of the day room in the urology wards 28 and 29. Patients and their families will now have better access and more comfortable

surroundings when attending for their appointments and treatment. Birstall BAGS, a charity working in and around Birstall and Leicestershire, seeks to bring people together to raise funds to support cancer services used by the local community. The charity also takes every opportunity to raise the profile of cancer, particularly with regard to the signs and symptoms, recognising that early diagnosis of cancer really can save lives. Birstall BAGS works with other local charities to provide services that support members of the local community who are living with a diagnosis of

cancer. Liz Darlison, a trustee of the charity, said: “We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the donations that are coming in, and we’d like to congratulate our supporters for their efforts in fundraising and organising events that have allowed us to make such a significant donation to the urology department at Leicester General Hospital. “Over the past year and more, we have all been touched by cancer whether it is a friend or family member or someone in the local community, and therefore Birstall BAGS will continue providing the

support that is needed and generating funds to help local hospitals detect and treat cancers sooner.” Birstall BAGS are currently raising additional funds for the gynaecology department at Leicester General Hospital to purchase hysteroscopes, which will help diagnose problems for women more quickly and comfortably, lessening their anxiety and allowing access to treatments more swiftly. County backs GCR THE COUNTY Council has recognised the economic benefits of the Great Central Railway by purchasing £250,000 worth of ‘shares’ in the company.

The county has also agreed to donate surplus track and lineside infrastructure from the site of the former Snibston Discovery Museum to the GCR for use in its planned £18million railway museum at Leicester North, Birstall. The museum is expected to open in 2020. The museum, combined with the GCR’s Bridging the Gap project, which will link two sections of track to create an 18 mile heritage line, is expected to boost Charnwood’s economy by between £30-65million, and create between 500-1000 new jobs. The GCR currently attracts 130,000 visitors a year, has a turnover of £3million and employs 60 people. County Council leader Nick Rush-

A LITTLE boy’s dream came true when he rode on the footplate of a steam locomotive from Loughborough to Birstall. Train mad Tyler Bostock (8) of Birstall Meadow Road made the journey on the Great Central Railway thanks to Birstall PCSO Mark Butler, who travelled with him. “Tyler was beaming from ear to ear” said Mark. “He was looking all around the cab, watching everything that was going on.” Mark arranged the trip after he met Tyler at Birstall’s youth café and found out he had Crohn’s disease and had been in and out of hospital for the past few years. “He told me he wanted to be a steam train driver and that he was mad about steam en-

Tennis player’s 24 hour charity challenge A TWENTY-FOUR hour tennis marathon has raised £2380 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. This is the second 24 hour challenge completed by Watermead Tennis Club’s Laura Morley, club coach and a star player. It was inspired by her coaching 13 year old twin boys who suffer from the life-limiting condition. The event was well supported by members and included a lively performance by local band RetroRocket on the Friday night, with the feeding station courtesy of Pizza di Bruno. So good was the pizza, they sold out before even Laura got to sample some! Photographer Rachel Ince was

Young people supported by club members were encouraged to participate in the numerous hour-long slots specifically geared up for them. Family fun sessions followed, with the highlight of the evening being an entertaining air guitar Cardio Tennis accompanied by

the band. Into the night Laura was supported by insomniacs, zombies and some of the club’s top singles players. Early morning saw the return of the children who enjoyed having their faces painted by Kidz Artistry. The seniors took a step back in time and played with wooden rackets before the event ended at 4pm. £2380 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, beating the last such event by almost £1000. “Well done to Laura, her team and thank you to everyone who supported, contributed and helped to make the event such a success!” said a club spokesman. Letters, which must include your name and address, (though not necessarily for publication) can be posted to: The Birstall Post, Unit 109, Greenacres, The Sidings, Leicester LE4 3BR, or handed in at Birstall library or email: editor@birstallpost.co.uk

MP’s update An update on some Birstall matters that have been raised with me recently: Post readers may recall, earlier this year, the plans by the West Leicestershire NHS Clinical Commissioning Group to cut their funding for the dementia support services provided by Age UK in the Resource Centre in School Lane, and my fight alongside local campaigners to get them to stop and think again. We were successful in securing from the CCG a rethink, with them agreeing to pause any decision until next year to allow time to see if a longer-term solution to keep the service open could be found. Next month I will be meeting with the CCG to get an update and to press them again on the importance of securing a longterm future for this vital local service. I have also been following up on the City Mayor’s proposals for changes to the Greengate Lane Traffic Lights. When the original proposals were brought forward I secured from the Mayor’s

Office an agreement to rethink them and to draw up new proposals only after consulting with Birstall Parish Council among others, something they had singularly failed to do with their first proposals resulting in a scheme which simply didn’t work for people on Greengate Lane. I understand that the City has yet to consult the Parish Council on any new proposals, and I am pressing the City Mayor’s Office to get those discussions underway as soon as possible so Birstall’s views are properly taken in to account this time – before any plans are drawn up. I hope to bump in to many of you in Birstall in the course of the summer, and hope everyone is able to have a relaxing break at some point over the summer. Edward Argar, Member of Parliament for Charnwood

Gratitude

Thanks I would like to thank the young people who helped my client, Hilary, when she unfortunately injured herself falling down the steps in the Sibson Road car park, on her way to my studio. When I arrived at the scene, having been alerted by one of the girls who had seen Hilary fall, another of the girls at the scene had already called the ambulance, someone else was making her as comfortable as possible, and everyone was generally doing all they could to help. Thanks also to Dave, a first aider, who closely monitored the patient's condition and spoke to the emergency services, as well as sorting the gate out in the car park! All the young people who were there used their initiative, and behaved sympathetically and respectfully and we were all so impressed. Hilary and I are very grateful for all the help, and you should all be proud of yourselves. Happily, Hilary is on the mend now after a week in hospital! Sally, Libra Fitness, Birstall

The Rothley Heritage Trust Presents

“Russian Romantic

Music”

Annual Exhibition

By Barry Collett Saturday 15th October 2016 10.30-16.30 The Old School Rooms, School St. Rothley Towards the end of the 19th century Russian composers became determined to form a new National School of Music, which broke away from Western influences to give a strong Russian flavour and character to their music. They succeeded, and wrote colourful and evocative masterworks that have become popular worldwide. We know well enough the usual suspects- Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninoff…….. but what about Taneyev, Pabst, Gliere, Kalinnikov, and others, who wrote charming and dramatic music, and who have been unfairly overlooked. This course will look at the whole range of music that has blossomed before the 1917 revolution. Course Fee £7 (includes morning and afternoon refreshments) Early Enrolment By Post Essential Cheques payable to The Rothley Heritage Trust and sent to Brenda Sutherland, 4 North St., Rothley, Leicester LE7 7NN. Please include name(s), address, ‘phone number and e-mail (if applicable) so that details of the day can be sent to you. and maybe join in? Seven Rotary clubs and four Inner Wheel clubs around Charnwood are getting together on Saturday 10th September to open a onestop shop for the day in Loughborough’s Carillon Court Arcade. Club members will be on hand, eager to tell you what we do. Our aim is to spread the word about the fun and fellowship we enjoy in making a difference to people’s lives, locally in our own communities, and worldwide. Rotary is neither political nor religious, and has moved on in great strides since its early days. It now boasts active lady members and an influx of younger members from all over the world: Loughborough Jubilee reckons it is the smallest multinational club in the UK. Among our recent activities: • we have built a garden at Loughborough Hospital, which we maintain • and a natural play area in Beacon Hill Country Park • awarded ‘Rotary Stars’ to highachieving children in local primary schools • organised public speaking competitions for children in local secondary schools • run outings for disadvantaged children and elderly people • made Charnwood Talking News recordings for blind people • and various other schemes to support a growing list of charities and to aid disaster relief. Rotary’s biggest worldwide project is Polio Plus, whose aim is to eliminate polio globally. So, do come along to find out more and ask as many questions as you like. If you are like us and want to ‘put something back’, Rotary and Inner Wheel could be for you. Or maybe you could recommend us to business colleagues for their personal and social development or your company's corporate social responsibility. We meet on different days and at various times, and have a range of many activity programmes. If what you hear is of interest, the next step is to attend one of our meetings, get to know people, then make your own decision whether to join us. You can be assured of a friendly welcome. http://charnwoodrotaryandinnerw heel.weebly.com

Captain Fantastic Only one place to start this month and that is with first XI captain John Gaydon scoring a magnificent 148 not out against Cosby to see his team win by 2 wickets. This is the second highest score ever by a Birstall player (Josh Saye scored 152). Unfortunately due to being hit very hard by unavailability due to holidays the team suffered back to back defeats, but then against Sileby chasing 181 to win captain fantastic made 95 not out to snatch a one wicket victory. The second X I’s 10 game unbeaten run ended when they surprisingly lost to bottom team Broomleys although shortages of bowlers on the day certainly did not help. Both teams still sit around halfway in their division and will hope for a strong finish to the season. Six teams enjoyed a quiz night with Ian Hunt as quizmaster and a chilli by supporters Kerry and Ian ensured a good night was had by all. The next social event planned is a Race Night on September 3 and everyone is welcome to come along and help raise funds for our chosen charity Birstall Bags. From Birstall Village Cricket Club

Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on August 8. Chris Morgan was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the Council. He has lived on the Hallam Fields estate since 2015. Borough Cllr and Mayor of Charnwood David Gaskell thanked the council for its hospitality for himself and his guests at Birstall Gala’s proms in the park concert. Councillors discussed the future of Birstall Gala, which has now been an annual event for 16 years, organised by the Parish Council. Feedback for this year’s gala had been a mixture of negative and positive. There were incidents of underage drinking, drunken behaviour in front of the stage, vandalism of equipment, and drug taking. The organisation and management of the gala takes a lot of council staff time and comment was made that the council is now running a two day music festival. Councillors were presented with reports from private security, the police and office staff, detailing the incidents of antisocial behaviour. Cllr John Jenkins said he thought the gala should not continue. He said: “These incidents are all quite serious and many are arrestable offences. How can the gala be policed? Would you really want to take your family to an event like this and get threats of violence?” Other councillors spoke out in favour of continuing the gala. Comment was made that there was not enough to interest families to keep them on site and that when one day is aimed at young people, it’s inevitable there will be some problems. Sgt Rod Smart helped police the event. He said the Saturday was the more problematic day, which attracted troublemak-

ers from outside Birstall. There were fights, some underage drinking and a little bit of cannabis smoked. He said: “The gala is a cracking event and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working on it over the years.” The council agreed that in 2017 the Gala be held on one day only, that it’s format be the same as the existing Sunday programme, and that it be held on the first weekend in August. PCSO Mo Musa reported that theft from and damage to motor vehicles was a current police priority, and that plain clothes patrols were taking place. He said that people were leaving high value items like laptops and tablets on show in vehicles and these were being stolen. Councillors agreed that the provision and erection of this year’s village Christmas tree be outsourced, that it be a traditional tree, and that several quotes be obtained including one from Birstall Garden Centre. The Parish Council has signed the necessary paperwork associated with the provision of a new bus shelter on Wanlip Lane, near the junction with Windmill Avenue. A wooden shelter will be provided free by Cllr Iain Bentley. The Parish Council has agreed to maintain the shelter. The council agreed to adopt play area two at Hallam Fields. It was agreed to use an employment agency at a cost of £2300 to prepare and paint play equipment on the Parish Council’s playing fields. The Council has received a quotation of £11,000 to provide a fence alongside the Meadow Lane ditch. The land beside the ditch is eroding and the ditch is a safety hazard. The Council has invited the Borough Council and the County Council to contribute one third of the total each. A response has not yet been received.

Organised by Birstall Allotment Society, the stall was decorated with homegrown fruit, vegetables and flowers and aimed to encourage passers by to consider taking on one of the vacant plots on Birstall’s three allotment sites. Allotment holder Joy Groom said: “Whatever mood I’m in when I get to the plot, I’m always in a good mood before I leave it. You can’t imagine how fantastic the things you’ve grown yourself taste when you’ve just picked them.” There are vacant half and full plots available on Birstall’s three sites: Greengate Lane, Meadow Lane and Worcester Avenue. There is no waiting list. All the produce on the allotment society’s stall, which was located outside the Co-operative supermarket on Wanlip Lane, was given away at the end of the day in return for donations to the Air Ambulance. If you would like an allotment plot in Birstall, contact Birstall Parish Council on 0116 267 6191 for more details.

Cort captures title MATTHEW CORT captured his third Midland Open title in style, winning the event at Birstall Golf Club on the first hole of a play-off. Cort – a member at Birstall during his amateur days but who now plays out of Beedles Lake G C – tied on eight under par with Lee Clarke (Beeston Fields), who won the event in 2012. Another former Birstall member – Richard Reed (Glen Gorse) - led at half-way with a morning round of 64, but could only add a level par 70 in the second round and finished third. Cort added an afternoon round of 67 (three under par) to his opening 65 for a 132, which Clarke matched with scores of 68 and 64. The omens for the play-off were good for Cort, as he had eagled the hole – the short risk/reward par four ninth hole – in the morning round. In the play-off he again drove the green and took two putts for a championship-winning birdie. It was his third Midland Open title, having won in 2013 after a four-way play-off when his opponents included

former Ryder Cup stars Paul Broadhurst and Peter Baker, and 2014, before being tied runner up last year behind Baker. The Birstall course again showed its teeth, with only 11 of the 73 professional golfers finishing the 36 holes under par. The victory means Cort is heavy favourite to retain his Midlands Order of Merit title, having won two of the four tournaments and come second and third in the others, with just one more to come.

PRE-SCHOOL children at Birstall Rainbow nursery on Wanlip Lane were joined by their parents to celebrate their graduation evening in July. They had their photos taken wearing their mortar boards and receiving their certificates from staff, followed by a party complete with a graduation cake.

Local life coach “I’M PASSIONATE about helping people improve their wellbeing so they can lead happier lives” says life coach Nicky Drew. Based at Greenacres near the GCR Leicester North Station, Nicky said: “People often ask what I do for a living and then look bemused when they find out that I am a coach. It’s not surprising really as it isn’t an easy concept to put into words. Sports coaching is becoming much more well known and accepted in the UK but personal coaching has some way to go. All coaching is essentially moving a person from where they are to where they want to be and that’s why clients come to me. “So what’s it all about? Generally a person comes to see me if they have a level of dissatisfaction in their personal or professional life that they would like to change. It could be a habit they want to break, a recurring behavioural pattern, lack of confidence or feeling that they are stuck. In any one day I could coach teenagers in school to help increase their confidence or reduce behaviour issues, somebody wanting to lose weight, a person wanting to change career, a recently separated person trying to rebuild their life or a person with social anxiety.” Nicky gives clients a free initial consultation. “This ensures that the ‘chemistry’ is right but it also gives the coach a chance to check that the client is ready for change. Once the coaching process begins I will help a client to work out what it is they actually want, why they want it, what’s stopping them achieving it on their own, strategies for achieving their goals and importantly accountability as they work towards the goals set.” Contact Nicky on 07891 687678 or nicky@hippocoaching.co.uk www.hippocoaching.co.uk

bowls news BIRSTALL LADIES Bowling Club was represented in two events at the National Championships, which took place in Leamington Spa last month. Rosemary Groves and Jan Everitt beat Birstall clubmates Pa Walker and Di Hurst in the county semi final to ensure their place in the pairs competition. However they lost out to Shireen Augustus and Joyce Utteridge from the Plessey Radar Club (Isle of Wight) in the first round. The pair were joined by Rosemary’s daughter Jennie in the triples competition and they were drawn to play an all-international trio of Sophie Tolchard, Lorraine Hackett and Natalie Chestney from Kings Bowls Club, Torquay, in the first round. Birstall narrowly lost 15-19 and the Devon triple, two of whom are Commonwealth Games medallists, went on to become National Champions. It should be noted that Devon conceded just seven shots in each of the five subsequent rounds whilst scoring an average of 23. Elsewhere, Birstall’s Grahame White won three of the Leicester City & District Parks competitions, which took place at Abbey Park. He took the singles title, defeating Old Humberstone’s Graham Seal and teamed up with Dave Clarke to win both the Pairs and Senior Pairs, beating teams from Abbey Park and Evington respectively in the final. It’s the third time the duo have won both Pairs competitions in the same year and the fourth time they’ve won the Pairs together. Birstall narrowly missed out in retaining the Bramley Bowl, the premier Parks competition. They were defeated 3-1 by Western Park in a final that could have gone either way as Birstall suffered one shot defeats in two of the four disciplines. Scores - Singles: John Eaton lost 20-21. Pairs: Eric North & Dave Clarke won 27-10. Triples: Gary Farmer, John Jenkins & Steve Bacon lost 17-18. Fours: Grahame Fawcett, Steve Barnacle, Brian Hancock & Stuart Hartop lost 11-21.

News from the churches WITH THE St. James' Summer Fayre on August 29 behind us, the prospect of autumn suddenly seems very near! It seems rather premature to point out that the St. Nicholas Christmas Fayre at Wanlip church will be taking place on December 3, but if you haven't already bought all your Christmas presents when you were away on your summer holiday (Yes, some people actually do that!) you will be able to fill any gaps at this annual event, so put it in your diary. Much sooner than that is another annual event involving the churches. Saturday September 10 is Ride and Stride day, when anyone in the community who is fit, and willing to raise money for the upkeep of ancient churches, is invited to cycle, roller skate, walk (even if only from a bus stop) to as many churches in the area as possible - having first encouraged your friends and family to sponsor you. At most churches you can have a "breather" and your sponsorship form will be validated. Rest and refreshments will be available at both St. James church and Our Lady and St. Nicholas at Wanlip. If you are interested, please contact Andy Proud on asproud@gmail or John Ward at jfw001@aol.com . On the following day, Sunday September 11, all local residents are invited by the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor David Gaskell, to St. James Church, Birstall for his Civic Service at 3pm. This will be followed by refreshments. Finally, the congregations at Birstall and Wanlip are delighted to welcome back their rector, Revd Vince Jupp full of new ideas and plans after his wellearned sabbatical! Many thanks to the curate, Revd Anne Crosby and the team of clergy and readers who have ably filled in during Vince's absence. From Birstall Parish Churches

Help to get a job A SCHEME launched by the County Council to help young people into work has been hailed a success. Over two-thirds (67%) of young volunteers in Leicestershire successfully found a job or an apprenticeship after taking part in Get Set, a scheme set up by the county council to tackle youth unemployment. Since its launch in September 2013, 139 young people on the Get Set scheme have been supported into placements. Out of this group, 64% had additional support needs including learning disabilities and difficulties, mental health issues and physical or sensory disabilities. After completing their placements, 13% of young people went on to further education or training, and each person has said that taking part Get Set has increased their confidence, enhanced their skills and helped them to take their first steps into employment. Get Set is an example of how volunteering can help people from all backgrounds develop valuable new skills, gain experience of a real work environment and add to their CV. “Too often young people find that they cannot get into employment because they lack practical work experience, however volunteering is an excellent way to get the skills and confidence that employers are looking for, with the support of a qualified mentor. It is a really positive and potentially life changing experience” said Pam Posnett, cabinet member for communities at Leicestershire County Council Get Set supports young people aged 16-25 to take up short voluntary work experience placements across a range of departments within the county council, to gain valuable skills in an area of their interest. In addition, it also provides young people with more options on results day. Areas of work that young people have volunteered in include libraries, IT, catering, family support, as well as office departments. 24% of young people went on to find employment at Leicestershire County Council, whilst others took posts and apprenticeships at other organisations. As well as securing work experience placements, young people receive hands on help and support on CV writing, job searching, completing applications, and interview practice. The scheme has been supported by 78 members of county council staff, who have acted as mentors for the young volunteers. For further information about the Get Set scheme, visit www.getsetleics.co.uk

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Head and Neck Cancer There are over 200 different types of cancer, it is possible to get cancer in virtually any part of your body. An area often forgotten about is your head and neck. Although not common head and neck cancer is a general term used to describe several difference types of cancer. It covers: • eye cancer • cancers in the nasal cavity and in the sinuses around the nose • cancers in the area that connects the back of the nose to the back of the mouth • cancers of the tongue, the gums, cheeks, lip and floor and roof of the mouth • cancer of the voice box • cancer of the food pipe or gullet • cancers of the salivary gland Cancers of the tongue, gums, cheeks, lip and floor or roof of the mouth are referred to as mouth or oropharyngeal cancer. There is no national screening programme for this in the UK because these cancers are relatively uncommon. You can do a couple of things to find early signs of mouth cancer. • Have regular dental check ups, at least yearly – even if you have false teeth • Check inside your mouth with a small mirror for any changes Many dentists routinely check for

mouth or oropharyngeal cancer. So they are often the first to spot these cancers in their patients. If the dentist suspects a cancer they can refer you to the hospital to see a specialist. Signs and Symptoms A broken area of skin (ulcer) that doesn't heal is one of the two most common symptoms of mouth cancer. This is not always painful. Ongoing pain or discomfort in the mouth is the other most common symptom of mouth cancer. An abnormal looking patch in the mouth could be a sign of cancer or precancerous changes. Mouth cancer can cause pain or a burning sensation when chewing and swallowing food. Or you may feel that your food is sticking in your throat Cancer in your mouth or throat can affect your voice. Your voice may sound different. It may be quieter, husky, or sound as if you have a cold all the time. Or you may slur some of your words or have trouble pronouncing some sounds. You may have a lump in your neck caused by an enlarged lymph node. A hot, red, painful lump usually means an infection, rather than a cancer. Lumps that come and go are not usually due to cancer either. Cancer usually forms a lump that slowly gets bigger.

Weight loss a common symptom of many cancers. With mouth or oropharyngeal cancer you may eat less due to mouth pain or because it is difficult for you to swallow. Most people have bad breath at some time in their life and it is not a sign of cancer. But if you have cancer, bad breath may be worse and happen more often because of your illness. Treatment There are a range of treatment options available to manage cancer of the mouth. As with many other types of cancer, the outcome for mouth cancer depends on how advanced your cancer is at the time it is diagnosed. In general 40% of those diagnosed will survive for 5 or more years. The earlier the cancer is diagnosed the better the outlook will be. Early diagnosis really does save lives so if you are worried please visit your GP.
