YOUNG AND old joined together to remember all those who have lost their lives in war at the annual Remembrance Day service and parade in Birstall. The Union flag and a standard from the Royal British Legion led the column which marched to St James’s church via Front Street, Birstall Road and Church Hill. On November 11 at 11am there was an act of remembrance at the war memorial attended by members of the public, including 96 year old veteran Rupert Stant of Sibson Road who served in the Royal Navy during the war, on the Malta convoys. He said: “What I remember is all the young men who didn’t come back, who were lost at sea.”

The money has been raised by the PTA organising fundraising events including the summer fair, discos, quiz nights and an Easter egg hunt. “In the past the PTA have funded projects, which would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the generosity and support of our parents, their families and the local community” said Jo Walton-Booth, PTA co-chair. She added: “The money raised goes towards those ‘little extras’ that improve and enhance our children’s learning experience at Highcliffe.” There are lots of events planned for the rest of the school year, including the annual summer fair on Saturday June 17. Gang of thieves targeting Birstall A GANG of four men are suspected as being responsible for a wave of vehicle crime in Birstall. Cars are being opened and searched in the early hours of the morning with the thieves making off with valuables. There were 22 incidents in a single night in November at locations all over the village. The suspects have been captured on CCTV which has been shared with the local police team, who so far have not been able to recover any forensic evidence. PC Dave Jaeckels said: “We are making some progress and have possibly identified some suspects – enquiries are still ongoing. “Our belief is that they are just trying car doors until they find them unlocked as there is hardly ever any sign of damage or forced entry. “Make sure vehicles are always locked and secured and if you have a keyless entry system ensure that the key is sufficiently far away from the car to stop it being able to be opened.” The Police are reporting an increase

in vehicle crime across the county. During the 28 days to October 27, 2016 there were 712 reports of theft from motor vehicles across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland, an increase of 33.8% on the same period last year. Detective Inspector Helen Nurse, the force lead for vehicle crime said: “There has been an increase in all types of thefts from vehicles across the force area. Some of the vehicles have had all their windows smashed or their locks forces but others have been left insecure. Thieves are trying car doors and stealing items such as laptops, wallets and satnavs which have been left on display. “These offences typically take place overnight when owners have left their vehicles on a driveway or on the road. We are urging vehicle owners not to leave anything on display. Our message is clear ‘leave it on show, expect it to go’.”

FOUR WAYS thieves can break into a car and how to prevent it. Signal jamming This is the most common way thieves gain access to a vehicle. A device transmitting on the same radio frequency as remote key fobs is used to jam the signal that locks the car. The device might be in the pocket of a criminal in a car park, or left out of sight near a driveway being targeted. When owners press the lock button on their key fob, the command is prevented from reaching their vehicle and it remains unlocked. Thieves are left with an unlocked vehicle. To avoid being a victim: Make sure the indicators flash when you press the lock button and listen for the clunk of locks. Try the door to check it is locked. Signal relay Keyless systems use a simple process. Vehicles emit a short-range “friendly” radio signal that carries only a few yards. When the right key fob is close by, the fob recognises the signal and transmits its own code, instructing the vehicle to unlock the doors. The same process is used for the ignition on cars with start buttons. Criminals have begun using wireless transmitters held close to a target vehicle to capture its radio transmission. This is relayed to another device held by an accomplice close to the key fob, which might be in the pocket of the owner at a motorway services, or by a window at home. It fools the fob into thinking that it is next to the car, prompting the release of the unlock code. Once the thief is inside the car,

the process can be repeated to start the engine. To avoid being a victim: Keep keys out of sight at home. When out, carry them in a shielded wallet or aluminium tin. Key programming Whether criminals break a window or use the jamming technique above, once they’re inside the car, those vehicles with a start button rather than an ignition key can be simple to steal. Every car sold in the past 10 years has been required to have a standard diagnostic port fitted. This is usually located in the front footwell. Computer hackers have developed devices that plug into the port, boot up a vehicle’s software and then program a blank key fob. In keyless cars this can be used to start the engine as well as unlock the doors. The time needed for the programming process is as short as 14 seconds. The cost of programming gadgets on foreign websites is as low as £10. To avoid being a victim: Fit a lock to your diagnostic port and use additional security such as a steering-wheel lock. Close range testing Some keyless fobs may still be in range of the car when left inside the house near enough to the vehicle. Thieves can discreetly check by trying the door handles, which may unlock the doors, but are unlikely to be able to drive off in the car if they do get inside: keyless systems require a fob to be inside the car before the engine will start. To avoid being a victim: Find a safe place for your keys at home and check to ensure they are out of range of your car.

ble for LOROS and Macmillan Nurses. The event was held on October 7 at Birstall Social Club – they donated the room, there was music, a raffle, auction and friends and family came to raise a glass to Tony, who was too unwell to attend. Tony died soon after and his funeral was held on November 4 at Gilroes cemetery. A scaffolder by trade, Tony’s coffin was brought to the service on the back of a scaffolder’s lorry. A funeral fund raised a further £500 for LOROS. His brother Rob said: “He was a big character, everyone knew him. Chip shop fire FIRE CREWS wore breathing gear when they were called to a fire at a fish and chip shop on Sibson Road. The incident took place at Bains, 121 Sibson Road at 10pm on Wednesday November 11. A spokesman for the fire service said: “The cause of the fire was accidental due to the build up of fat. There was slight smoke damage to the building.” The fire was in an area where chips are stored. The business owner was able to put out the fire himself and called the fire service as a precaution. No one was hurt in the incident.

Birstall County Councillor Iain Bentley, proprietor of Bentley’s Garden Buildings, provided a wooden shelter free of charge. He said: “There is no funding for bus shelters, the County Council says it doesn’t have funds and I thought if I don’t do it, it won’t happen.” Following a site meeting, Leicestershire County Council agreed to lay a concrete base for the shelter. The cost of the base is £1500 - the County Council is paying half, Birstall Parish Council will pay the other half. Earlier this year Mrs Christine Howe organised a petition calling for a bus shelter on Wanlip Lane that was signed by 128 people. She said: “A lot of people have told me how happy they are now the shelter is up.”

The deep ditch that runs alongside Meadow Lane has been a health and safety hazard for years. The County Council has refused repeated requests to adopt the road, which services Watermead Country Park, the allotments and the Birstall United football ground Worried about the risks of cars driving into the ditch, Birstall Parish Council asked permission to fill in the ditch and culvert it to make it safe but the Environment Agency refused to grant permission. With no local authority prepared to take responsibility for managing the road or the ditch, Birstall Parish Council invited the County Council and Charnwood Borough Council to each pay a third of the total cost of fencing the ditch. This was agreed this autumn and a 117 metre, 1 metre high heavy duty steel post and rail fence will be erected in

December. It will have timber gravel boards to prevent any further erosion of the bank. The total cost of the fence is £11,127. Birstall Parish Council Chair Ann Marshall said: “I am tremendously relieved that this matter has finally been addressed, due to the persistence of our clerk Sue Coulson. “We had gone round and round in circles with this problem for years and got nowhere so I’m really pleased. The ditch is crumbling and we have been really worried there would be an accident there.”

Wanlip I noted with interest the article 'Smell from Wanlip' in November's edition of The Birstall Post. I was aware of Mr Sansome's views and petition, and had raised them for discussion at November 11th's Wanlip Parish Meeting. Whilst we sympathise with those who are experiencing the stench described, the unanimous view of the meeting was that the comments are no longer representative of Wanlip village. Indeed, in 2015 we worked with Severn Trent to identity odours that we were encountering. Five Severn Trent representatives attended our parish meeting to

discuss our concerns and, as a follow-up from this, we arranged for them to tour the village and for residents to visit the Severn Trent site. The local smells around the village were remedied by replacing all the manhole covers in the village and surrounding area. This was completed within a matter of weeks. During the visit to the treatment plant, we found a well-managed process and a staff determined to be a good neighbour. Overwhelmingly, we were astounded by how odour-free it was. As a village, we do occasionally experience a compost-like smell. The Severn Trent site also hosts Biffa Plc. which uses an anaerobic digester to decompose food and garden waste. We are currently discussing our concerns with Biffa. It would be helpful and neighbourly if Mr Sansome and those promoting the petition would double-check the source of the odours and, identify exactly where they are currently being encountered. Sadly, it seems to be areas of Birstall that are still experiencing strong smells; certainly not Wanlip. Given Seven Trent’s prompt response to our concerns, we strongly recommend a similar, direct approach from representatives from Birstall. Claire Myles Chair Wanlip Parish meeting

Parking I am writing to comment on the letter in last month’s Post about the bad parking. I have also witnessed the same. People ignore double yellow lines, park outside shops and I have even seen people, quite

able to walk, use the disabled places outside the bank, some even think if they leave their engines running it’s OK to park at bus stops! Name & address supplied

Vandalism Fantastic news at last progress has been made in erecting the long awaited for bus shelter on Wanlip Lane. I have seen the concrete base and this gives encouragement that things can be done all be it slowly. I have noticed the bus shelters erected on the A6 Loughborough Road in Birstall next to and opposite the Park and Ride (paid for out of the 106 agreement monies) have been vandalised since December 2015. These public amenities have been a useful amenity for residents at the Hallam Fields Estate, for those travelling by bus into Leicester and towards the Loughborough area. They have provided much needed shelter from road spray, wet or windy weather especially in the winter months. The vandalism was reported on the website FixMyStreet in December 2015 as the panes of glass were smashed. The response from FixMyStreet was that this had already been reported. However, as nothing seemed to have been done after several weeks this was reported again only to be informed the glass was on order and would take three weeks. Seeing no progress in February 2016 this raised the question on how long it would be to repair the bus shelters as further damage had occurred. The response given by Charnwood Borough Council was the Charnwood Borough Council no longer had a contract to repair these shelters. A complaint was sent to the Leader of

the Charnwood Borough Council of which no reply has been forwarded in 10 months. Recently on November 7, 2016 it was observed the bus shelters on the A6 near the Park and Ride remain damaged. One bus shelter has two panes of glass left and the other bus shelter has two panes of glass missing. Since no response has been given towards repairing the vandalised bus shelters, a referral was sent to our elected representatives for the Hallam Fields Estate. But no one has responded. Personally I feel it is shameful so much interest is put in to acquiring a new bus shelter when no interest is shown in repairing or maintenance of these is provided once they have been erected. This issue seems to set and example of how a public amenity can be destroyed so readily by vandals and a lack of civic pride in such facilities gives a poor example to residents living or working in Birstall. Let us hope action can be taken by someone soon, before the completion of the Wanlip Lane bus shelter becomes another target for vandalism. Concerned resident

Footpath At the time of writing (Nov 16) the city council is in the process of refurbishing the footbath which is at the side of Leicester Road going towards Thurcaston. Good for the pedestrians walking along it but when they turn into Greengate Lane to walk towards Birstall they gradually encounter a very unsatisfactory system of footpaths. For about 100 yds there is a proper footpath but when it ends there is a rather narrow verge of rough grass difficult to walk along especially where space is even narrower due to sections of overgrown hedge. In order to reach the further part of proper

footpath which leads to the bridge pedestrians must either negotiate the grass verge, walk in the road or cross the very busy Greengate Lane to reach the combined section of footpath and cycle lane created a few years ago. Why on earth was it created on that side of the road to match in length that of the grass verge. Why did the relevant planning committee of the city council agree to that ridiculous scheme? Surely the logical thing to have done would be to replace the grass verge with that section and thus join the two existing sections of footpath making one continuous footpath (and perhaps a cycle lane). As it is pedestrians using that isolated section until it ends have again to cross the very busy road to reach the section of footpath leading to the bridge. Of course that procedure is done in reverse when people are walking from Birstall. There must be throughout the city only a few roads where there is no continuous proper footpath on either side of the road and possibly that section of Greengate Lane is the only example of that very unsatisfactory provision. What a bizarre situation to have in Environment City! Leicester City Council is always concerned about health and safety factors in all areas of life (and rightly so) but they have paid scant concern about the safety of all the pedestrians using the city length of Greengate Lane, many of them being children walking to and from schools in Birstall. As regards the proposed roadworks on

Greengate Lane Sir Peter Soulsby, the Mayor, has so far failed to acknowledge, to thank the residents of Birstall who submitted, as requested, their comments re the proposed scheme in March this year. The long delay we are experiencing in having a decision from sir Peter Soulsby about the proposed roadworks would seem to indicate he is very undecided about the project and hopefully is having second thoughts about its viability. I implore him to abandon this unnecessary project which would slow the traffic, cause long queues of traffic from lights each side of the bridge especially in the morning rush hour and would greatly increase air pollution (with its very harmful nitrogen oxide) which must be tremendous already and it would further damage the health of all travellers and particularly the health of all those young children walking to and from Highcliffe School. I implore Sir Peter Soulsby to please focus instead on establishing a continuous proper footpath (and perhaps a cycle lane) on both sides of Greengate Lane in the city area to provide access to appropriate surfaces and much improved safety to which travellers of all ages are entitled. Mr J Woods

Vienna & Beyond Sat Jan 14, 7pm Humphrey Perkins Community Ctr, Cotes Rd, Barrow Rossini: The Thieving Magpie Council land etc I asked for these to be put on the Parish Council agenda so that their concerns could be discussed but the Clerk refused. My request for a progress report on the Hallam Fields Community Hall was also refused. At the Parish Council meeting on the 15 November 2016 the Chairman claimed that the Clerk has the sole responsibility for deciding what goes on the agenda and what doesn’t. We were not allowed to debate the matter. Because of this people have asked me what's the point of electing Parish Councillors if they are prevented from raising legitimate concerns raised by their parishioners as surely that’s the main role of a Councillor? Maybe someone else would like to answer that question? On a positive note after many months of pressure from myself our Local Authorities have finally agreed to fund a fence on Meadow Lane to prevent people and vehicles dropping into the ditch. I will continue to press to get Meadow Lane adopted. Also we now have a bus shelter at the terminus on Wanlip Lane. There is no doubt that the shelter would never have been erected had it not been for pressure from myself backed up by Christine my wife collecting 127 signatures on a petition. As a result of this the Parish Council reversed their publicly stated policy of refusing to support bus shelters ( Birstall Post 336 ). I feel sorry for the people who've been exposed to bad weather at that stop over the years when our Local Authorities could have erected a shelter at anytime. Our next step is to campaign to get the kerb raised at the two stops on Wanlip Lane and hopefully Councillors representing all three tiers of Local Government will support this as this has been going on for well over 10 years. "Florence Foster Jenkins" December 9 (110 mins) This real life-story is a perfect

comedy drama leading us into Christmas. Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant harmonise perfectly the humour and pathos. In 1930's and 1940's New York, Florence Foster Jenkins is a wealthy amateur operatic soprano. Surprisingly, in spite of her poor singing ability, her concerts are always sold out. “Love & Friendship” January 13, (93 mins) This romantic comedy drama, based on Jane Austen's novel, "Lady Susan", stars Kate Beckinsale as Lady Susan Vernon. She favours scandal without scruples and observes that "Facts are horrid things". The costumes are impeccable. ""Trumbo", will be shown on February 10 Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets are £5 which will include refreshments & a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Life saving service

BIRSTALL MEDICAL centre and Border Drive surgery has been rated as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). In September 2015 the GP practice was put into special measures after an inspection by the CQC rated the surgery as ‘inadequate’. In February 2016 Dr Karnail Shergill was joined at the practice by a new senior partner, Dr D’Souza, and a new management team. Four new doctors have since been appointed on a permanent basis together with an advanced nurse practitioner and other specialist staff. “This has reduced the need to use locum doctors to a minimum” said Ed Chambers, chairman of Birstall Medical Centre and Border Drive Patient Participation Group (PPG). He added: “A number of behind the scenes changes have been implemented to improve the service and feedback from patients indicates that these are proving effective although it is not expected that the full effects will be felt for

a few months until patients have got used to the changes. “The PPG has been involved in this process and is now looking forward to representing the views and experiences of patients to further improve the service they receive. This is especially important because the budget cuts and other decisions about the NHS, quite outside the control of individual GP practices, are making their job increasingly difficult.” Any patient of the practice is welcome to become a member of the Group. If you are interested in joining, email: bmcpd.ppg@yahoo.com or leave your contact details with the receptionist at the surgery. All patients of the practice are being invited to meet the Partners and Team on an informal basis on Saturday, December 10 in Birstall Medical Centre. Drop in at any time between 10am and 1pm.

A GROUP from a Birstall church saw the life saving work of the air ambulance crew first hand when they visited to hand over a donation. Tony Bloxham explains: “At the end of October, a group representing the churches of St James & Our Lady & St Nicolas, were invited to the Derby, Leicester and Rutland Air Ambulance (DRLAA) base at East Midlands Airport, to present a cheque for £1171, being half the proceeds of the St James’ Summer Fayre. A second cheque for £150, donated by St James’ Gospel Choir, was also presented. “The air crew had had a busy morning, but there was a quiet period when we arrived in the afternoon, and we met the duty crew; wonderful people, totally dedicated to their work. They were very appreciative of our support, and eager to answer our questions. “Standing on the landing pad was their main helicopter, bright yellow in the afternoon sun, capable of 185mph, and with a large fuel capacity its range and duration of operation is considerably greater than many of the aircraft used for this work. The crew consists of a

pilot, a doctor and a paramedic, the doctor and paramedic being independent of the NHS. The helicopter is equipped with a comprehensive range of medical equipment enabling the medics to carry out quite complicated surgical procedures when required. As we were saying our farewells a telephone rang and the crew sprang into action, started the engine, and we saw them take off, heading for the Ashbourne area. “The average cost of a response is £1700.00 and the annual running cost of the DRLAA operation is £1.7 million, this is totally dependent on generous giving since they receive no government support. It was a very interesting visit, made all the more significant by handing over the cheques at the business end, the point where it all happens. Long may they continue to receive generous donations to carry on their life supporting, and life giving service.” Pic: the group from Birstall with the air ambulance crew

THE BIRSTALL POST DEC 2016

IS YOUR New Year's Resolution to get fit, to learn to jog / run, to lose some weight or simply to make new friends? Well, Birstall Running Club say they can help.

As part of the village celebrations for Christmas 2016, Churches Together in Birstall are organising a ‘Birstall Sheep Trail’. “In all the busy-ness and hullabaloo in the run up to Christmas, we can often forget what it is we really celebrate at Christmas” says one of the organisers, Sharon March. “The Birstall Sheep Trail is one way families can have fun together to remember the real message of Christmas – that the birth of Jesus means God is no longer far away, but has come to live among us.” The idea of the Birstall Sheep Trail is that the shepherds have lost their sheep on their way to welcome baby Jesus at the nativity. The poor lost sheep are hiding in shop windows on Sibson Road, Birstall and you have to find them. From December 2 all you need to do is look for the lost sheep in shop windows and write down the sheep’s name (found on its name tag) and the name of the shop. Sharon said: “Each week new sheep will appear, so you will need to keep looking out for them! “In the final week, there will also be a knitted nativity display to find. This time you need to write the name of the shop where you found it.” To encourage people to take part there will be prizes of knitted sheep. The prize winners will be selected at the Crib service at St James the Great church on December 24 at 4pm. Children are invited to come along dressed as shepherds, angels, or other characters from the nativity. To enter the competition fill out the entry form that will be handed out at the Birstall Village Christmas event on December 2. They can also be downloaded at www.birstallsheeptrail.org. this website also contains further details about how to enter. Completed entries can be emailed, posted, or handed in. “We hope families will have fun with the Birstall Sheep Trail and we hope it helps us all to have fun as well as remember the real meaning of Christmas” said Sharon.

Due to the popularity of last years course, the club is running its next 10 week "Couch to 5k" course in January 2017. This will start on Monday January 9 at 6.45pm at the Pavilion, School Lane playing fields, Birstall, LE4 4EA. The

course is aimed at beginners aged 16 years and older and will be run by qualified run leaders. A club spokesman said: “We will typically work for between 30 and 45 minutes each week with gradual progression as the weeks go by. ‘Graduation’ will take place at the end of the 10 weeks with a 5km group run at Braunstone parkrun where course members will be able to run and celebrate together.” The course is based on the popular NHS 'Couch to 5k' programme and is fully supported by internet materials and a mobile phone app. “Please do not be shy. All abilities are

welcome and we will ensure that no person is left behind” said the spokesman. There is no cost for the course, and no obligation to join the club at the end of it. As the nights are dark the club advises that everybody is ‘seen to be safe’ by wearing hi-vis clothing. “This need not be anything expensive and simple hi-vis vests can be picked up for less than £5. Otherwise, all that is needed is sportswear, a pair of trainers and a bit of enthusiasm!” said the spokesman. For further information, contact Scott Brownlow by email on scottpbrownlow@gmail.com

Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on November 14. A representative from Park Road Residents Association reported that a section of Park Road has a number of potholes that are getting worse. As the road is unadopted, the County Council will not repair it, and in previous years residents have jointly paid for repairs and have received a grant for repairs from Birstall Parish Council.

A recent appeal for funds to residents has raised £2965. The cost of repairs to the worst parts of the road is £1872. The association requested grant aid of £1000 from Birstall Parish Council. It was agreed to make a donation of £500 and to invite the association to apply for a grant in the future should the condition of the road deteriorate further. County Councillor Iain Bentley reported that the bus shelter he donated has been erected on Wanlip Lane and is being well used. He was thanked by the Council for providing the shelter. PCSO Mo Musa reported there had been a rise in burglary. Burglars were smashing the glass panels of rear doors, reaching in and turning the key. He advised that keys never be left in the doors. He reported there had been 22 thefts from motor vehicles in Birstall in a single night and that items were stolen from unlocked cars. Private CCTV footage had shown four or five individuals were responsible. No fingerprints are being left. PCSO Musa advised checking car doors were locked and removing all items from the car. PCSO Musa said that officers had spoken to young people gathering on the Sibson Road car park and reported that problems of antisocial behaviour had reduced. It was reported that the County Council and the Borough Council had agreed to each pay a third of the cost of installing a fence beside the ditch on Meadow Lane. The parish council will pay the remaining third. The total cost is £11,127. Prior to the fence being installed the ditch will be cleared by the Parish Council’s estates team. The Parish Council’s Estates and Recreations committee will consider withdrawing the tenancy agreement of an allotment holder who used foul and abusive language to council staff. It was agreed to donate an engraved trophy up to the value of £100 to Birstall and District Art Society in memory of the late Mary Houghton, who was a parish councillor and a member of the society. It was agreed to support a request from Charnwood to remove the public payphone on the A6 near Red Hill Island opposite the petrol station. It has been used 13 times in the last year and is frequently vandalised. The Council has agreed to spend £503 on 24 new chairs and a storage trolley for the 10 Sibson Road building. The existing chairs are old and damaged. As of September 26, 2016 there were 19 vacant half plots on Birstall’s three allotment sites. It was agreed to spend £4,666 on a new roller mower to carry out mowing currently undertaken by contractors. It was agreed to spend £1375 on weed suppressant membrane to be used on vacant, allotment plots. Two projects suggested for inclusion in next year’s budget are renovating the public toilets on the School Lane playing field and installing hand driers in the pavilion changing rooms and toilets.

ONCE AGAIN we have unfortunately seen a rise in recorded crime this month, mainly due to the number of thefts from motor vehicles and damage to motor vehicles.

Lots of us like to have gift wrapped presents under the tree, but if your curtains are open, it can be an open invitation to opportunist burglars. It is a good idea to either not have gifts under your tree, or close your curtains at night. If you have bought larger gifts, it is a good idea to dispose of the packaging and not leave it next to your recycling bin, where it can easily be seen. If you are out and about Christmas shopping, please don't leave shopping bags on display in your vehicle (or any other items that you wouldn't want to lose) If you are out in the evening, please close your curtains and leave a light on so that it looks like you are in. Timer switches are cheap to buy and are ideal for switching a lamp on when it is getting dark. If you are thinking about installing extra security, sensor lights are ideal. As long as they are placed high up, where they can't be tampered with, they will act as a deterrent. Anything you can do to make life more difficult for would be burglars is a bonus. Trim back hedges and shrubbery as they can shield a burglar, make sure you put all tools away, keep your doors locked (even when you are at home) It is also not a good idea to close your curtains in the day if you are away. Not only is it obvious that you are not there, it can also shield a burglar from your neighbours, if you are unlucky to be burgled. There has been a recent increase in vehicles being broken into (mainly overnight) The advice remains the same: be vigilant and make sure that you take items of value out of your vehicle; check that your vehicle is locked by not using your fob and above all, be alert and look out for your neighbours as well as yourself and please report all incidents and suspicious activity to the Police on 101 (non emergency) or 999 for emergencies. Our next advice shop is on December 21, from 10am until midday at the old council office, opposite the garden centre. Now is an ideal time to have your cycles coded for free, we also have a range of security items for sale (all at cost price) Neighbourhood Watch wish you all a very safe and Happy Christmas and New Year. From Birstall & Wanlip NHW

We have also seen a large rise in burglaries, up from just one offence in September to 10 in October, which is clearly concerning. In five out of the 10 burglaries entry was gained by the glass in the rear door being smashed and then using a key that had been left in the lock to open the door. Please ensure that you are doing all you can to make it difficult for burglars to get to the rear of your property by securing side gates and making sure that fences at the sides and rear of your garden are in good order. Please also ensure that you do not leave keys in locks as this makes it much easier for burglars to open doors and gain entry, rather than having to climb through broken windows and risk leaving blood or other evidence at the scene. As I am writing this report the clocks have also just gone back, as a result of which we are launching our ‘darker nights’ campaign as we tend to see a rise in burglaries at this time of year. Please view the ‘darker nights’ section of the Leicestershire Police website for further crime prevention advice that is particularly relevant at this time of year. As stated above, theft from vehicles & damage to vehicles has also remained high this month and on the night of October 28 we had numerous reports of cars being damaged in the area around Roman Road and Curzon Avenue. We have viewed some CCTV footage of the persons we believe to be responsible for these and are making efforts to identify the person(s) in the images & I would ask anyone with any information to come forward so that we can put a stop to these mindless crimes. The beat team has been conducting extra re-assurance patrols in the village and has also requested some additional patrols overnight in an attempt to deter and catch the person(s) committing these offences. Lastly we are aware that we have started to have some complaints about noisy vehicles coming onto the Sibson Road car park late at night. The beat team has responded to this by speaking with the drivers of these vehicles and advising them regarding their behaviour and we are also working closely with both the Parish and Borough Councils to address this issue. Please can I ask that if you are affected by this at all that you contact us on 101 so that any complaints are accurately recorded as we need this information to ensure that any patrols are attending the area at the relevant time(s). Thanks for reading and as always please remain vigilant and report any crimes or suspicious activity to the Police on 101. You can also contact your local NHW co-ordinator for advice on non-crime matters.

Birstall & Wanlip Crime Report : Oct 2016 Assaults 5, burglary dwelling 10, burglary non-dwelling 2, damage 5, damage to motor vehicle 18, fraud 2, theft 4, theft cycle 3, theft from motor vehicle 13, theft from store 4.

BIRSTALL BOWLING Club President Barry Jarvis has raised £1260 during his Presidential year for his chosen charity, the Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough. A major part of this was raised during the week-long tour to Portugal which took place in October. The club played four matches, winning three, in the first visit to the Algarve area of the country. Results: Birstall 122 Vilamoura 104. Birstall 109 Tavira 90. Birstall 104 Hesketh Park (Kent) 87. Birstall 100 Valverde 109. A total of £453 was collected by “Fine Master” John Hurst for various misdemeanours throughout the week and on return to England, this amount was generously doubled by Barry’s company Jarvis Roofing, a local company that specialise in the Installation, Maintenance and Repairs of all types of Roofing and Metal Cladding Works. More information can be found at www.jarvisroofing.co.uk Rainbows is the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people. It’s a place where life-limited children and their families can find care and support. The team there helps to relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, support parents and siblings through their bereavements and care for children until the end. WI trip to Kwik Fit WE HAD a really good turnout for Birstall and Wanlip WI’s AGM on November 7. 37 ladies were present to discuss the past year and plans for the future. We reflected on a really busy 2016 with many highlights including raising £600 with craft sales, numerous theatre trips and outings and of course winning the Bradgate Group skittles cup. Thanks were given to the unsung heroes who keep our group growing and thriving and to the ladies who provide excellent refreshments each month. 11 ladies attended a really useful and fun Kwikfit course (pictured right) on November 15 where we donned boiler suits and learnt all about car maintenance. More glad rags will be donned when we enjoy our Christmas dinner at the White Horse on December 19. Our speaker for the evening was Blue Badge Tourist Guide Caroline Roberts who proved to be a font of all knowledge about Leicester. Even some of us born and bred in the City learnt new and interesting facts. Margaret Hoskins won the competition ‘A Leicester Souvenir’ with her 100 year old beer bottle. Our last meeting of the year is on December 5 when we will share Secret Santas and have a Beetle Drive. From Birstall & Wanlip WI

News from the churches

THE BIRSTALL POST DEC 2016

Preparing for Christmas This year, Advent Sunday has already taken place on November 30, so the Christmas season is already underway and there is a great variety of happenings to choose from in December. On Saturday December 3 the events start at Wanlip with the St. Nicholas Fayre from 11.30am to 2pm. Coffee, cakes and light lunches are also available. The ever- popular Christingle service takes place on Sunday December 4 at 10am at St James, when children are encouraged to support the Children’s Society charity by filling a cardboard candle with small change. They receive an orange, with a real candle, which is lit as the Christingle song is sung and we remember the deprived children of this world. Then on Saturday December 10 St. James Monday Group are holding their Christmas coffee morning in the church from 10am to noon with presents, Christmas wreaths, cards and raffle also featured. Sing Christmas! Christmas would not be Christmas without carols and there are many opportunities to join in during the next few weeks. There will be readings and carols by candlelight on Sunday Dec 18 at Wanlip (6pm) – the ancient church looks particularly beautiful in the candlelight. Or younger children may prefer the informal carols on Monday 19th (also at Wanlip at 6pm) when the focus is on the Christmas tree. For those who enjoy a hearty programme of popular carols (even if you don’t think you can sing!) “Carols for All” is at St. James at 7.30pm on Dec 21, with refreshments afterwards. The Crib service on Christmas Eve at St James at 4pm is probably the most popular service of the year for families. Adults may prefer the quieter solemnity of Midnight Mass at 11pm on Christmas

Eve at St James, after which Christmas can truly be celebrated. The people of St James, Birstall and Our Lady and St Nicholas, Wanlip wish everyone in the community a blessed and very happy Christmas. From Birstall Parish Churches

Conference next June, we are pleased to hear that Rev Edson Dube has accepted the role of the new Superintendent of the new Circuit (which will consist of 20 Churches). He is currently based at Oldbury in the West Midlands. From Birstall Methodist Church

Join with the Methodist congregation this Christmas Everyone is welcome to any of our services of worship at the Methodist Church on Wanlip Lane, but in this Christmas season, amidst all the commercial build up to the great day, we offer a special Christmas Welcome to all as we celebrate the birth of Jesus once again. There will be a carol service, usually by candlelight, at 6pm on December 19. On Christmas Eve there will be a midnight Holy Communion service which begins at 11.30pm. The Christmas Day service will begin at 10am (instead of the usual 10.30am). Another special service will take place this month at 4pm in the afternoon on December 11 when any folk who have been bereaved, either recently, or longer ago, are especially welcome to a memorial service. With the exception of the morning service on December 18(to be led by Sheila McGowan), all other services will be led by Rev Paula Hunt – who is well worth listening to ! Appointment of New Superintendent Rev Dave Warnock at Syston is the Superintendent of the seven churches in the Leicester North Circuit of which Birstall is one. Dave was keen not to keep the appointment when Leicester North Circuit joins with Leicester Trinity Circuit in September 2017. Although subject to confirmation at the Methodist

Carol Service Our traditional Carol Service will be held this year on Sunday December 11 at 10.45am in the Community Room at Highcliffe Primary School, Greengate Lane (LE4 3DL). Please come along and join us for familiar carols and Bible readings telling the events of that first Christmas. Our visiting speaker, John Tonks (Leicester) will give a short talk on the meaning of Christmas. The service, which lasts about an hour, will be followed by tea/coffee and time for a chat. Other Services Our usual Sunday morning services are also held at Highcliffe at 10.45am and you are most welcome to join us on December 4 & 18. We are not able to use the school premises during holiday periods, so please ring for arrangements on December 25 and January 1. We are scheduled to return to the Community Room on Sunday January 8, 2017 at the usual time. The Lodge Trust As there is not a Christmas Market in the Village Hall this year, we are not able to sell craft items made by The Lodge Trust, the Christian charity which helps adults with learning difficulties, so can we encourage you to visit The Lodge, which is on Main Street, Market Overton in Rutland. The Country Café and shop is open Monday to Saturday between 8:30am and 4:30pm (Details at http://www.lodgetrust.org.uk ) Calendars Finally, if you missed last month’s notice, BIBC has some free calendars for 2017 available. They have a different colour picture (landscape/nature) and Scripture text for each month. If you would like one, then please contact the number below. All at BIBC wish you a very happy Christmas. For further information please ring 0116 2214883. From Anne Taylor, Birstall Independent Baptist church

Fortieth anniversary THE RAF Association Birstall Branch recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a social evening at the local Royal British Legion Club. Guests included South East and Eastern Area Director Ken Clarke and representatives from three local ATC squadrons. Pictured are two of the original branch members, Barry Smart (now Chairman of Leicester Branch) and Tony Lord, cutting the cake.

Savings EXTENDING LIBRARY hours through self-access and a single base for museum collections are among ideas to save £1.3 million, says Leicestershire County Council. “We have to explore some innovative ideas to save £1.3 million” said Councillor Richard Blunt, county council cabinet member for libraries and museums “Some of them, such as introducing technology to allow people to visit libraries without staff being present, could result in a more flexible service and enable libraries to be accessible for longer.” The service is responsible for a range of cultural, educational and support services, including libraries, museums, heritage sites and the record office. An update to councillors says that a range of savings options have been identified, as the budget reduces from £5.2 million to £3.9 million over the next two years. These include the use of smart technology at 15 market town and shopping centre libraries, allowing customers to swipe their library card to enter the library and borrow, return and renew items. It is intended to trial the new system at Syston library next year. Across the county, the scheme could save £300,000 per year. Also being considered is a single hub for museums collections, archives and educational resources, replacing five current venues. Options are still being developed, but it could save £400,000 per year.

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Mouth Cancer Mouth Cancer has been in the news over the last month because there is a worrying increase in the number of people being diagnosed. Birstall BAG’s wanted to shed some light on this to raise awareness. We hope this article provides information that prompts you to check your mouth and seek help if you are concerned. Cancer Research UK has found that rates of mouth (oral) cancer have jumped by 68 per cent in the UK over the last 20 years. Oral cancers include cancer of the lips, tongue, mouth (gums and palate), tonsils and the middle part of the throat (oropharynx).

Oral cancer is more common in men, but there have been similar increases women. Around nine in 10 cases are linked to lifestyle and other risk factors. Smoking is the biggest avoidable risk factor, linked to an estimated 65 per cent of cases. Other risk factors include alcohol, diets low in fruit and vegetables, and infections with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It’s worrying that oral cancer has become more common. It’s important to get to know your body and what’s normal for you, to help spot the disease as early as possible. An ulcer or sore in your mouth or tongue that won’t go

away, a lump on your lip or in your mouth, a red or red and white patch in your mouth or an unexplained lump in your neck are all things to look out for. Speak to your GP or dentist about any changes that are unusual or don’t go away. Healthy lifestyles can help reduce the risk of developing the disease in the first place. Not smoking, drinking less alcohol and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can all help to cut our risk of mouth cancer. HPV vaccination could help protect against oral HPV infections, and it can prevent a range of cancers associated with the HPV virus, so it’s a good idea to get the vaccine if you are offered it. Cancer Research UK and the British Dental Association has developed an oral cancer toolkit to help GPs, dentists, nurses and hygienists spot the disease and refer suspected cases sooner. If you are concerned ask your dentist or GP to check your mouth next time you visit.
