Dancers delight at annual show A DAZZLING display of street dance wowed the audience when a Birstall based performing arts company staged their annual street dance show. Children from Faces Arts put on three performances at Groby Community College in March. Faces Arts Director Jody Chesterton was proud of the students’ achievements. She said: “Faces Arts is about providing opportunities for

the local children to discover their performing talents. The development in their ability and
self confidence of the children has been outstanding. A huge well done to all the children who took part.” Faces Arts host a variety of classes for children and will also be staging their Summer School, August 7-11 at the Cedars Academy. Enforcing dog laws BIRSTALL PARISH Council has employed an enforcement officer to deal with dog fouling and dogs off the lead on Parish Council owned land.

“When councillors first discussed the idea, it was thought that without the Enforcement Officer having the powers to be able to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to offenders, it would be seen as a futile exercise” said Parish Clerk Sue Coulson. The Clerk held meetings and discussions with Charnwood Borough Council’s Street Scene Manager, Nicola Gibson to see if a solution could be found. The Cleaner Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 – Section 58, allowed for a Primary Authority (Charnwood Borough Council) to authorise a designated officer of a secondary authoriContinued on page 2

ty (Parish Council) the power to be able to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to offenders. This process was agreed by all parties and was completed in January 2017, resulting in a signed agreement and a Warrant Card issued for the Parish Council’s Enforcement Officer. As of March 23, 2017, the Enforcement Officer has issued 17 Fixed Penalty Notices for dogs off leads and dog fouling on the Parish Council owned playing fields and Cemetery. The penalty is £100, discounted to £50 if paid within 10 days. The money received
from the fines issued is collected by Charnwood Borough Council, not the Parish Council. Sue Coulson said: “It is part of the agreement that should any offenders fail to pay it will be progressed, through the courts if necessary, by Charnwood Borough Council. This alone will save the Parish Council having to pay potentially huge legal expenses should legal representation be required.” She added: “I and the Charnwood Borough Council’s officer are aware that this is a unique project and it is hoped that it will become a model for other Parish or Town Council’s to address their concerns relating to dogs and litter on their own land. “There have been some mixed responses within the community, but the Parish Council have done this for the benefit of the community and for the health and wellbeing of all users of the playing fields. It will create and develop clean and safe areas for all to enjoy.”
Care company is “inadequate” A CARE company that provides personal care services for people in their own home has been rated as inadequate by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Hales Group Leicester, based in Syston, is contracted by Leicestershire County Council to provide care for 115 mostly elderly people in areas including Birstall and Anstey. The CQC inspected in December 2016, rated the service as inadequate and placed it in special measures. The inspectors found: • some people had been left in degrading situations, for example, not having their continence needs met • staff were often late for calls and sometimes missed calls completely • the irregularity of visits meant people did not receive care that was vital to their physical health and did not receive food or drink • people were at risk of not receiving their medicines as prescribed The CQC has made several recommen-

dations and will inspect again in 6 months to check that “significant improvements” have been made. The County Council say they have worked closely with the company to make significant improvements during January and February to ensure all current care is safely delivered. This has involved overseeing quality assurance improvements, including management changes, additional staff recruitment, assessments being carried out and ensuring all care plans in place, say the county. Leicestershire County Council leader, Councillor Nick Rushton, said: “Caring for vulnerable people remains our top priority and that’s why I am very concerned that the CQC has rated the Hales Group as inadequate. “I want to reassure people that, as soon as we became aware of complaints about Hales, we sent in adult social care teams to help improve standards. “It’s vital that we all have confidence in the care provided to vulnerable people and, along with our partners in the NHS, we’ve worked hard with Hales to improve its service, but we will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate action, if required.” Councillor Dave Houseman, the county council’s cabinet member for adult social care, has also visited the Hales office in Leicester to discuss the council’s concerns at well as meeting with a number of people receiving home care. Cllr Houseman said: “I have visited the Hales Office in Leicester to express my concerns and to discuss their improvements plans. “We had problems when we launched Help to Live at Home last year, as a large provider withdrew from the contract. Thanks to the action we took then and the lessons we have learned, I can assure you that this service is now running much more effectively and caring for around 1700 people across Leicestershire. However, if anyone does have concerns about home care, please ring our customer services team on 0116 305 0004 or email and we will investigate.”

Birstall students shine at dance awards THE ABILITIES of six girls from a Birstall dance school were recognised at the IDTA’s International Theatre Dance Awards. Held at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music in February, dancers Alice Clay, Becky Shuter, Emily Harris,
Emma Garner, Natalia Puczylo and Sian Gurney were all invited to compete owing to their high grades in dance exams in 2016. They are all pupils at the Birstall based Steps School of Theatre Dance. School principal Michelle Lamont said: “I’m so proud of all the dancers, they work extremely hard and deserve the recognition for their success. The school has gone from strength to strength over the years, the girls have proved they are the best in the world and Birstall residents should look no further to find a dance school with such an excellent reputation for dance training”. Becky, Emma and Natalia all made it to the final 30 and Natalia (pictured left) was awarded fifth place in the Ballet and fourth place in the Modern categories. Michelle said: “It was a massive achievement for all the girls to be selected and to be chosen for the final but for Natalia to be placed is truly amazing.” Steps have their biannual show ‘Forever Dance’ at Cedars Academy in May, for tickets email

Introduction of 30 hours FREE funding The Hunny Hive Day Nursery have been open since November 2016 and are pleased to announce that their team is expanding and the family of Hunny children and parents is growing rapidly. The children have settled superbly and are making rapid progress within their learning and development due to the rich, varied and imaginative experiences planned by the staff. Due to the introduction of the 30 hours free early education entitlement, the Hunny Hive have planned to open their large, purpose built preschool room to accommodate parents wanting to take advantage of the increased hours of funding. If you would like to know if your child is eligible for the 30 hours funding please contact Sian, Nim or Mel at the setting on 0116 2672039. The Hunny Hive are also proud to announce that they have listened to the feedback from their parents and the local community and they have decided to hold a holiday club for primary school aged children and an afterschool club from September 2017, picking up from the new Hallam Fields Primary School. The holiday club will consist of a range of fun, engaging activities and within the larger holidays will include trip days. A booking form will be available prior to the holiday to enable parents and children to see the range of activities on offer. The Hunny Hive would like to take this opportunity to thank their parents for their continued support and look forward to welcoming and supporting more children and families within Birstall and the neighbouring villages. Here are a few words from the Hunny Hive parents: “Very friendly staff and great environment for the boys, they love it!”

Marathon man runs for NSPCC
A BIRSTALL man preparing to run the London Marathon on April 23 says what he is most looking forward to is crossing the finishing line! Rob Clare (27) of Field Leys Way will be running to raise money for the NSPCC. He said: “It sounds bad but I am most looking forward to finishing it! Crossing that line… the experience and event is amazing but a lot of people don’t realise the hard work behind it. I’ve ran up to 200 miles so far in preparation. I’m on a strictly no alcohol policy which was hard during Christmas. Not only that, the aches, pains, sores and not being able to walk a lot of the time after a long run.” He added: “My training is normally 3 runs a week, I’ll do 2 runs of 20 miles, which consists of 2 minute jogging 30 second sprinting and 1 minute walking
recovery. The third run will be about 18-20 miles… I have tried to give up chocolate but it’s very difficult, my partner is 8 months pregnant as well so it doesn’t help that she wants chocolate a lot of the time. “I have chosen NSPCC for a few reasons. One is that I am about to become a father for the first time so I think my sense of children and what it means to become a parent has led me to choose the charity. Also, I come from a
looked after children background so I know how difficult it can be and some of the things children can be exposed to. “So if I can do my bit and raise some money then maybe a child or two could be saved. If everyone does their bit I think we can make a real difference.” To donate, text ROBS52 £(amount here) to 70070. Or go to justgiving.com and search for Robert Clare.
Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on March 13. The police report from Sgt Rod Smart reported two burglaries, one on Station Road and one on the Meadway. The victim of the Station Road burglary was a 96 year old woman who was asleep alone in the property. No high value items were stolen and there are no suspects. A schoolboy had his bike stolen from him while riding it in Watermead Country Park. Thefts from motor vehicles were still high. There have been reports of antisocial behaviour at the Libra Parade flats, and complaints about speeding cars on the Hallam Fields industrial estate. The planning application for the new community hall will be submitted soon and details will be available on the planning section of Charnwood’s website. The submission was delayed to include amendments suggested by the Palmer Tomkinson Trust. Councillors considered a draft newsletter produced by the local Conservative councillors and submitted to the Parish Council for their consideration. Comment was made that the Parish Council is not a party political body and would not wish to associate itself with or promote any particular party. It was agreed that amendments correcting facts be requested – these related to the new community hall, Meadow Lane fencing and the provision of bus shelters. Parish Councillor Rahul Patel has resigned owing to work commitments.

Maundy service honour Pedestrian bridge over A6
TWO PEOPLE from Birstall have been chosen to receive Maundy Money from the Queen when she visits Leicester Cathedral on April 13.
Tony Bloxham and Sandra Robinson will be among 91 men and 91 women from across the city and county who are aged 70 plus and who have given long Christian service to the church or community. Tony and Sandra were nominated by Birstall rector Vince Jupp. He said: “There are many deserving of acknowledgement for their services to the church and the community, but on this occasion H.M. the Queen’s visit and gift of Maundy money provided

The bridge is a condition of the planning permission Jelson were granted for the creation of the Hallam Fields development, to be completed before 750 houses of the 900 planned are occupied. Please Phone for a NO OBLIGATION QUOTE me with an opportunity to highlight the outstanding commitment and service of Tony and Sandra. They both give so much of their time and energy in meeting the needs of others, practically, spiritually and emotionally. Maundy comes from Mandatum, Jesus Christ’s mandate to love one another. Tony and Sandra live and breathe this Christian commandment and deserve all the recognition that Her Majesty’s visit affords. I’m really pleased for them and hope they have a great day. “I feel a bit overwhelmed to be honest” said Tony, a churchwarden. “There was a letter on the doormat and it had the Royal crest on the back. ‘You have a letter from the Queen!’ joked my wife – I opened it and it was!” Sandra, a pastoral assistant, said: “It has quite blown us away, to be notified by letter from Buckingham Palace. “I thought, what a great honour, I’m so excited, then I got a bit anxious but now I’ve calmed down – it really is a great honour.” The Royal Maundy Service takes place at 11am when the Queen will walk around the cathedral handing each recipient their gift. Each year the Royal Mint produces a limited edition collection of coins for distribution by the monarch.

Response I am writing in response to a recent publication by the Liberal Democrat County Council Candidate for Birstall, who makes several inaccurate statements. I was shocked to read a headline article suggesting parking charges will be introduced in Birstall. This is simply untrue. As Birstall`s residing County Councillor, I sit on the Environment and Transport Scrutiny Committee who have been debating parking charges . There has been absolutely no suggestion that parking charges will be introduced in Birstall and I can confirm this is not the intention of the County Council. Over the last few years there has been several changes to social care in Birstall. Most notably in 2015, Riversdale Court, a large block of 24 sheltered housing flats were completely rebuilt to a high standard. This has been the largest project of its kind in Charnwood in the last four years. I have been concerned about the provision of care from the Hales Group (a health and social care provider that
currently has a contract with Leicestershire County Council) and have been in touch with Charnwood MP, Edward Argar. He has taken this up with the leader of the County Council who is working on urgent improvements to the way social care is provided in Birstall and Leicestershire. There has been a significant shortage in funding for adult social care. Leicestershire County Council have taken the measure of introducing a precept on the latest Council Tax Bill of £63.89 on a Band F property, which equates to 17.5 pence per day. Council Tax Increases: The budget for the next four years is yet to be set, so it would be impossible to claim there will be a 17% increase in Council Tax over that period. Leicestershire MP`s have been fighting for a better funding deal for Leicestershire County Council, which if successful would make it much easier to balance the books. At present Leicestershire County Council receives far less funding than similar sized councils in other areas of England. Broadnook SUE: In November 2015 Charnwood Borough Council adopted their Core Strategy which includes a development of 1650 homes, industrial units, open space & community facilities on land owned by the Palmer Tompkinson Trust, Leicester City Council & the Cooper family. The development north of Birstall is known as “Broadnook”. As I live and work on land north of Birstall, which is where the development is to take place, I do have a registered interest but remain able to lobby, shape and influence outcomes on behalf of Birstall residents. Your other Birstall Councillors are all able to vote on matters concerning the Broadnook SUE. The detailed planning application is due to come before the Charnwood Borough Council Planning Committee in June 2017. Quality stuff Firstly it's great to see the dog wardens at work. You have a big job to sort out , I say hammer the culprits! Like the new steel fence on Meadow Lane, that is there to stay, quality stuff! The library has recently progressed to having a very tidy front after a friendly reminder. Finish with a happy note, Co-op saw early morning assistant clearing any litter away from front surround area. Name and address supplied
Access It is nice to see that there is renewed interest in provision of access from the Gates development on to Hallam Fields via Harrowgate Drive Playing Fields. The school and shops on Hallam Fields are near completion and will be valuble amenities for Hallam Fields, and the wider community of Birstall. Some people have said Hallam Fields will become the heart of Birstall. My understanding is that there will be access from Harrowgate Drive Playing Fields into Hallam Fields. This will be through the new proposed open space which is being created to the west of Hallam Fields Primary School. The plans for the school indicate an access point into the new public open space from Harrowgate Drive Playing Fields. Another access point into the new public open space will be from Brockington Way. This area is yet to be completed. I also notice this proposal can be seen on the developers Sales Plan for Hallam Fields (phase 5 & 6). In the meantime residents of Birstall wishing to access Hallam Fields, may do so via the pedestrian access which links Bridge Green to Harrowgate Drive. This has been used successfully for nearly a decade and is very much appreciated.

Kerbs Unfortunately I have had to resort to using a mobility scooter to get about, which I find very useful. However, it has brought to my notice the lack of dropped kerbs in this village. By that I mean dropped to road level. Most fall short by as much as 1”-2” plus. This is a waste of labour. The jolt up and down can not only damage the scooter but also be very unpleasant for the occupant. Lowering the kerb is a waste of money unless it is done properly. A qualified engineer needs to explain to the workmen what is needed and then check to make sure the correct procedure is Continued on page 10

I found the plans for the Primary School readily available on the Charnwood Planning website under application P/16/1047/2. They are very informative and contain alot of information ranging from conservation to wildlife interests. I have been made aware that the Parish Council did discuss the access from Harrowgate Playing Fields to Hallam Fields development at the meeting of the Estates and Recreation Committe on the 25th January 2016 and again on the 21st March 2016. A vote was taken and it was resolved "to not recommend to full Council that they consider proceeding with an access route through to Hallam Fields from Harrowgate Drive Playing Fields at this moment in time". I did ask Birstall Parish Council at the time when this matter would be discussed again and was told it could not be raised again for another six months. Currently two Birstall Parish Councillors are muting the idea to reopen this issue. However, as access is already planned, their support on this issue would only be of benefit if additional access is expected. Good luck to them. Hallam Fields Resident (Open Space lover).

carried out. A ‘that’ll do’ attitude will not do. I was in touch some time ago with Charnwood Borough Council about this. Being aware of expenditure I suggested spreading some tarmac to fill in the gap but was told that this was impractical. I have seen this method used elsewhere and there doesn’t seem to be a problem with it. You may have thought the new Hallam Fields Estate would have had this all sorted, but no. Visiting relatives on Pasture Drive recently I was unable to get across a road through lack of a drop. Finally I found a drop down, but no way of getting up on the other side. Thereafter I kept on the road. Sadly this is typical of the whole estate. This is a planning error and should have been thought through before construction began. I know a lot of scooter riders who will back me up on this. The problem is “is there anybody out there listening”. Particular black spots for me are Greengate Lane going up on the left, Birstall Road from Kilby Avenue to Red Hill roundabout, Roman Road and parts of Sibson Road shopping area to name just a few. Storage I had a thought and wondered if the good people of Birstall would be able to help please - does anyone have a garage they do not use and wouldn't mind ADAPT using. We need to store toys and books and some equipment only. We would only need occasional access to the stored items when we have a sale or when we need to store newly donated items. We are ADAPT Prembabies Ltd a local Leicestershire based registered charity (charity no 1138777) who support families who have a baby on one of Leicester's neo natal units needing intensive neo natal care at birth. We are completely self funded and raise money by having social events, doing a car boot, having a sale of baby equipment and toys and families often organise their own events as a thank you to ADAPT for the support they have received whilst their baby was receiving life saving treatment on a NNU. Parents very often donate new and used toys, books, equipment, prams etc to us for us to sell to raise money. These items are fabulous and we do sell them but in the meantime we have to store them. As a "poor" charity we cannot afford storage fees so a couple of us store them at our own homes. Unfortunately we have too many items at the moment and we are having to refuse donations purely because we don't have the space to store them. Lindsay Rajczyk lindsay@prembabies.co.uk

tones of Gladys as she wakes people up with her call of “Good morning campers”. Can you remember Ted, the cheeky chap who is always up to no good. Then there are the ballroom dancers, Yvonne and Barry, who believe they are better than all the rest, well Sylvia does any way. A cut above the rest of them with her posh voice and haughty attitude. And then there is Geoffrey. A brand new manager, completely out of his comfort zone and struggling with the advances being made towards him by Gladys. And last but not least, how could we ever forget the lovable, (if very scatty,) endearing Peggy, on her quest to be promoted from cleaner to a YELLOW COAT. THE NEW season will soon be upon us with the first match scheduled for April 22, but due to clashes with the football season all matches are away until May 6. Several social events are planned including the return of the clubs single wicket competition first played for in 1965 with a certain Mike Hendrick as the initial winner, who went on to play 30 test matches for England. We are always on the lookout for new players and this season would certainly like a wicket-keeper to strengthen our side. If you fancy just popping down and watching cricket and having a pint then please come along on any Saturday from May 6th where you will be made welcome. It only costs £1 per year to join and that allows you to attend any of the Quiz Nights, Race Nights etc. what a bargain! David offered to take Ann home – it turned out they only lived four houses apart, on Purley Road off Catherine Street. “I hadn’t seen Ann before but I found out later she’d seen me changing my shirt in the bedroom window!” said David, who has now been married to Ann for sixty years. He added: “I told my mother I’ve met the most wonderful girl. I thought Ann was brilliant.” Ann says: “He was a nice looking chap, we hit it off straight away.” The couple married on April 20, 1957 at the church of Our Lady on Moira Street in Belgrave where they set up their first home: in Canon Street. They moved to Birstall in 1970 and live on Moorgate Avenue. “We love Birstall, we wouldn’t swap it for anything” says Ann. David’s working life was spent as an engineer and Ann worked at Wolsey’s and Macmarket in Birstall. The couple have a son and a daughter, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and will celebrate their Diamond Wedding anniversary with a family get together at Birstall Royal British Legion – David has been a member since 1975. The couple are inseparable “We go everywhere together and always have” said David. “We’ve kept together, and always had respect for each other.”

Charity run A CHARITY run around Watermead Country Park returns this July.
Record numbers at run IT WAS with much celebration – and a fair amount of cake - that Birstall Running Club’s latest batch of beginners completed their Couch to 5k programme with a group 5k ‘graduation’ parkrun on March 18 at Braunstone park. Over 100 beginners completed the ten week programme which saw each of them having to run three times a week, and progressively further distances and for longer each time. In total, over 120 people represented BRC on the day contributing to the highest ever attendance at Braunstone parkrun of 610 runners. Programme leader, Scott Brownlow, SAID: “This time’s cohort were quite fabulous, a great team. They made friends with each other very early on, which really helped, as they could arrange additional runs with each other via social media. We had a number of the team reach their 5k target well in advance of the end of the programme, whilst for others it was a tough journey from start to finish, yet the grit and determination shown by these guys in particular was quite incredible, especially on those cold January nights when staying at home was perhaps the more tempting option. “We also had lots of support from last year’s beginners who perhaps understood the running journeys, and trials and tribulations, of the current cohort much better than us older heads and were able to offer support based on their own experiences only 12 months earlier, and at times a shoulder to cry on, when the going got tough.” Co-programme leader, Colin Rimmer, added: “Numbers were such that we had to stream the team into nine ability groups. This relied on a ‘whole club’ effort, getting involved as group leaders and support runners. This ultimately worked extremely well as the faster runners could all run together, at a quicker pace and on tougher routes, whilst the less confident could continue to be nurtured and supported every step of the way. For some of the team, this will be the end of their journey, having achieved their goal and hopefully surprising themselves in the process. For others, the Club hopes that they will continue to run and indeed begin a lifetime of love for running.” Birstall Running Club meets on Mondays and Fridays, with an Plumbing & Heating Intermediates Est 1968 session on General Plumbing Wednesday Bathrooms & Tiling evening. More information can Landlord Certificates 211637 be found on the POWER FLUSHING BRC website. New Installations & Upgrades www.birstallrc.org.

This year’s Watermead Challenge charity run is being held at 7pm on Tuesday July 11, 2017. There are the usual five and three mile courses. Race Director, Chris Battye said: “ The two distances appeal to a range of abilities from novice runners to the more experienced. Louise Brooks brought lots of her lovely hats as examples of her craft. She told us how she runs her business including a personal hat design service, workshops and hen parties. We learnt that it is not that simple to choose the right hat for your special occasion. Your personality, stature, hairstyle, glasses and type of function must all be considered and of most importance is comfort. We were also shown how to correctly wear your hat and did we have fun trying them all on! We will be starting a monthly ‘Crafting and Chatting’ session at the new Cedar Mews Care Home. It is hoped that the
residents may join in too as the home is very keen to work alongside local organisations. Some of us went to the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation AGM held at Leicester Grammar School on March 11 where the exuberant Lucy Worsley was the guest speaker. Christine Burns was the winner of ‘Your Favourite Hat’ competition. We will meet again on April 3 when our guest speaker is Peter Wood talking about ‘The Art of the Chair Bodger’ and the competition is ‘a wooden treasure’. From Birstall & Wanlip WI
Supporting education
THE BIRSTALL POST APR 2017
THE BARK Foundation, set up by Birstall couple David and Joy Bark to support an orphanage in Cameroon, is making educational support of the young people its next priority. Since May 2016 £14,200 has been sent to cover university fees, secondary school fees, examination fees, uniform, and repairs, tyres and fuel for the minibus that is the transport to school. Trustees of the Bark Foundation have received a letter from the management of the HOTPEC Orphanage in Cameroon, expressing the gratitude of the children and staff to all who had contributed to the financial support towards their secondary and higher education. Trustees were recently informed that the orphanage was short of food because of the political unrest and local people were not visiting with their normal donations of food. £2000 has been sent to ensure that the management can buy the food they need, and medications that are required for the welfare of the children.

Jim (81) was nominated by the Mayor of Charnwood and attended the reception and dinner at County Hall with his wife Wendy. Jim was one of ten guests nominated by the Mayor of each Borough in the county. His nomination recorded his long service to the people of Birstall and his purchase of the Reading Room on Birstall Road, its refurbishment and dona-
tion to the young people of the village. Jim, a former parish councillor, bought the Reading Room in 2014. It is used by Carl Gunns for his boxing gym. Jim personally restored it, installing a window, repairing ceilings and walls and fitting a new oak floor. “Lynda constructed seven wonderful flower arrangements, one for each colour of the rainbow” said a club spokeswoman. “Watching a qualified and gifted demonstrator arrange flowers, gave everyone inspiration to try new and different flower arranging techniques at home. These arrangements were in turn prizes for the evening’s raffle. “Next month’s meeting is on Wednesday April 26 at 7.15pm in the Village Hall, why not pop along and enjoy an evening with flowers. It is a wonderful way to relax.”
Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society will be presenting “Hi de Hi” by Paul Carpenter and Ian Gower, based on the BBC comedy classic. Sue Withers from HATS said: “Last year’s spring play, “Allo Allo” proved to be a huge success so we thought we would once again produce another iconic classic comedy.” The production will feature all the well loved characters – Gladys, Geoffrey, comedian Ted, dancers Yvonne and Barry and Peggy the cleaner who yearns to become a Yellowcoat.

Club’s new captains BIRSTALL GOLF Club’s 2107 captains – Nigel Spencer and Lynn Morris – drove in to the accompaniment of dhol drums. Nigel is a recruitment consultant and has been a member at Birstall for 10 years, having previously been a keen cricketer, while Lynn is a leisure centre duty manager, currently based at St Margaret Pastures. Birstall will again host two events for the Midlands PGA this year, with the KCC Midland Open being staged on Thursday 18 and Friday May 19, and reverting to
its previous format with the professionals playing one round each day in the company of their amateur colleagues. The date change means the competition becomes the first on the Midlands PGA Order of Merit. Many of the professionals will return on Friday June 30 for the Air Ambulance Charity Pro-Am. The event is at 12 noon on Bank Holiday Monday May 1- the duck race itself will begin at 2pm. Organisers say the event will have a true Gala feel about it - there will be a cake stall and plant stall, tuck shop, marshmallow toasting, candy floss, popcorn, traditional games such as, hook at duck, coconut shy, tower building, Donkey Derby, stocks, a general tombola and a teddy and chocolate tombola for the children. A bouncy castle has been donated by Kaines castles, there will be a face painter, a tattoo and nail bar and duck memorabilia. “The Scouts and Girlguiding, Birstall are very excited about being part of this event and hope to raise lots of funds towards new equipment and activities for our members” said Marie Upton, Brown Owl of Birstall Girlguiding “The two organisations usually cooperate to host Birstall's annual Scout and Guide Gala but this year we will be focusing on providing some great stalls at the Duck Race instead of our annual gala. “Girlguiding will be having a recruitment stand with information how to join and support Girlguiding either as a girl or an adult wanting to find out more about what we do. Both Girlguiding Birstall and Scouts are run entirely by volunteers and have been doing so for many years now in the village and we make a positive contribution to the community. Please come and support us and help raise funds for such good causes.” Nick Farnham, Group Scout leader, Birstall Scout Group, said: “I would like to thank The White Horse for this special invite into an annual event that happens in Birstall. Birstall Scout Group will have a selection of stalls which will be an insight into the fun and exciting world at scouting. There will be an information tent if anyone young or old would like to join in our very mad and barmy Scout group. Everyone welcome!” The KGB (knitting guerrillas of Birstall) will also be promoting the event. This year there will again be a children’s duck decorating competition, if you haven’t had a copy of the Duck from Highcliffe or Riverside Primary schools and would like to take part, call in to the White Horse to collect one. You can check out the ‘Duck News’ on the White Horse Facebook page. Any donations of prizes, cakes, teddies or other items for stalls would be very welcome, please contact the Guides or Scouts or give us a call and leave a message for Charlotte at the White Horse on 0116 2671038.

Charity cycle ride in Charnwood
THE BIRSTALL POST APR 2017
THE CHARNWOOD Forest Cycle Ride is returning for it’s sixth year and organisers Emma Hallam and her colleague Zoe Edwards would love it to be the best yet. “This year we have a wonderful local business Flowers Associates as our Headline Sponsor, and with their support we hope to make this a bigger event this year” said Emma. After last year’s success, we have decided to keep the 50 miles and 10-mile route to complement the existing 20-mile route. The 10-mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 20 & 50-mile route will take in Beacon Hill making it a more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further.” The event welcomed 300 participants in 2016, this year they are hoping to break records and get 400 people signed up. “It would be amazing to see 400 people joining in the fun and cycling around the beautiful Charnwood Forest” said Emma. Adam Flowers from Flowers Associates said: “Delighted to support the Charnwood Cycle Ride. Our business is all about people and the success it brings when likeminded people work together and are only too pleased to support such a flagship event for Alex’s Wish and the local Charnwood community.” The event is aslo sponsored by Bradleys, The Woodies pub in Rothley and Parkhill Building and Joinery. The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open
roads. “The route is well sign-posted,” explains Emma, “and because the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. The circular route starts and finishes in Rothley village and has been carefully chosen to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment. It is fairly challenging in parts and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. There are plenty of
marshals along the way to give you lots of moral support and encouragement. “At the end of your ride you’ll get a warm welcome back to enjoy a large selection of refreshments including hot bacon rolls, complimentary yummy homemade cakes and hot and cold drinks served to you by Cuppas of Rothley.” This year’s event takes place on Sunday May 14 and there is an early-bird

Charnwood Borough Council says more than 700 tonnes of clothes and other textiles are being put into the green wheelie bins it collects each year. And the big issue is – the Council can’t recycle them. The Council has now launched the #RecycleRight campaign to urge residents to put the right items in the right bins. Cllr Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Cleansing, said: “We recycle 17,000 tonnes of materials a year but we still have too much of what we call contaminated waste – the wrong items in the green recycling bins. “Our website can tell you exactly what can and cannot go in the green bins and we’ve refreshed the information to make it as easy as possible to understand. “The big offender is clothes and textiles. Whatever you do, please do not put clothes in the green wheelie bins.” entry fee of just £10 (10-mile route) or £20 (20 and 50 mile route) for those entering before April 30, or £15 (10mile route) or £25 (20 and 50 mile route) if registering on or after April 30 Emma said: “The event is open to everyone aged 14+ whether you are an amateur cyclist or a professional, refreshment stalls are along the route and there is no minimum sponsorship required, although the more money you raise the more money we have to invest in leading edge research and clinical trials. We are also looking for volunteers to marshal too. “Please come and join in… you’ll get your healthy dose of fresh air, enjoy spectacular views around the stunning Charnwood Forest whilst cycling for an incredibly worthwhile cause. It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months.” You can register at the official event website www.charnwoodforestcycleride.co.uk. & crime report MANY OF us now buy and sell online and there are some basic rules that should be followed. Buying Never send money by bank transfer and never send payment as 'friends and family' via Paypal (you will not get your money back should anything happen) If you send payment via 'goods and services' with Paypal you will be covered if there is a problem. If you don't receive your item or it is faulty, you can open a case. Always make sure that there is a padlock symbol in the browser bar (it appears when you log in or register) the web address should begin with: https://. Never leave yourself logged in by closing the window, log out at all times. Please ensure that you have effective and updated antivirus and/or antispyware software and you have the firewall running before you go online. Selling Always send to the address registered with Paypal. If there is an issue, you are covered by Paypal. After all, it will not be your fault if the buyer has forgotten to update their address should they have moved. If you are selling an item as 'collection only' never accept Paypal, always insist on cash on collection. There have been cases where a buyer has claimed that they have not received their item. The buyer then opens a case and you will lose, as you have no proof
that the item has been collected- you have then lost your item as well. You need to double check that payment has been received before you post your item and keep all postal receipts for 6 months. If an item is valuable always check the best method of posting to cover the value should it go missing, or be damaged. Buyers and sellers should always make themselves aware of any group rules and follow them, so that you know what to expect. REPORTED CRIME in Birstall and Wanlip for February has remained at a similar level to January, with a total of 41 crimes reported. Thefts from vehicles continues to be the main issue, with another 11 reports in February, two of which were number plate thefts. In the early hours of February 11 we also had an attempted theft of a caravan from Allington Drive and another actual caravan theft from Worcester Avenue. Thankfully, officers on patrol spotted the stolen caravan being towed along Wanlip Lane a short time later and following a short pursuit it was ditched by the offenders who managed to make off, leaving the caravan behind. A number of enquiries have been conducted to try and trace the suspects including checking CCTV and completing house to house enquiries, however at this stage no arrests have been made in relation to these offences. Following these incidents, PCSO Butler visited a number of caravan owners to make them aware and to advise them about caravan security to help Lots of opportunities to perform throughout the year Dance for fun or train to a pre- professional standard in a friendly, welcoming environment Graded Examination classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Lyrical, Acrobatics from aged 2 upwards.

prevent them from also being targeted. We have also seen a rise in the number of burglaries this month, with seven offences being reported, which is obviously disappointing. Please continue to be vigilant and ensure your house is locked and secure whenever it is not occupied to make it as difficult as possible for burglars to break in. For further crime information please visit: www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL60/ Crime Prevention Advice As stated above, we’ve had two incidents in February where caravans have been targeted and whilst this is not something that generally happens in Birstall it seems a good time to remind owners about some simple security measures: 1) Use good quality hitch locks, wheel clamps, wheel locks, security posts and alarms whenever your caravan is not being used. 2) Take photos and record the make, model and 17 digit CRiS (Central Registration and identification scheme) mark of your caravan so that it can be easily identified if it is stolen and later recovered. 3) Consider clearly marking the roof of your caravan with the last 6 characters of the CRiS mark so it can be read by any roadside cameras. Neighbourhood update Officers from the beat team have visited a local school this month to talk about the role of the Police and about the different jobs we do. We have also conducted a number of beat surgeries where we have met members of the local community and discussed the issues that you feel we should be targeting, including ASB and speeding. Looking
Back
BEFORE THE Birstall Post and the Leicester Mercury reported on people and events in our village, earlier 19th century newspapers like the Leicester Journal and the Leicester Chronicle, both long defunct, carried news items about Birstall, then a much smaller place with a population below five hundred. Local historian, Mike Smith, has been researching these early papers and a monthly selection of the more interesting and amusing of these news items will be appearing in the Birstall Post. Twenty Guineas Reward Whereas late on Monday night last some person or persons stole from the Tythe Farm in the parish of Birstall the property of Mr Chapman, part of a ewe sheep leaving the forequarters, having cut off the remaining part with the wool and conveyed it away. This is the fifth stolen from the same farm during the last four months. Leicester Journal 28/12/1832 Absconded: And left his family chargeable to the Parish of Birstall. Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Testicular Cancer - Self Examination Last month Birstall BAG’s wrote about how to examine your breasts so wishing to be inclusive and to address cancers that affect men this month we thought we would talk about testicular cancer and how to self examine. Testicular cancer is cancer that develops in the testicles, which are part of a man's reproductive system. Testicular cancer is rare. In the UK around 2,300 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year. That's about 1 out of every 100 cancers (1%) diagnosed in men. Younger men are more likely to get testicular cancer. Almost half (50%) of those who get it are under 35.Men in their early 30s are the most likely to get it. Men over 55 are the least likely to get it. A lump or swelling in part of one
testicle is the most common symptom of a testicular cancer. It can be as small as a pea but may be much larger. You may notice an unusual difference between one testicle and the other. Most testicular lumps are not cancer. Fewer than 4 in every 100 lumps (4%) are cancer. Your scrotum may feel heavy.Your doctor may shine a strong light through your testicle. This test is called transillumination. Light shows through a harmless, fluid filled cyst (called a hydrocoele) but it can't show through a cancer, which is a solid lump. Testicular cancer is not usually painful. But for about 1 in 5 men (20%) with testicular cancer a sharp pain in the testicle or scrotum is the first symptom. How to examine yourself for lumps or swellings in your testicles. Cancers are easiest to treat when they are

found early. It's useful to know how your body normally looks and feels, and this includes your testicles. This makes it easier for you to notice any changes.Check your testicles from time to time. A good time to check your testicles is after a warm bath or shower, when the scrotal skin is relaxed. What to look out for Hold your scrotum in the palms of your hands. Use the fingers and thumbs on both hands to examine your testicles. Size and weight It's common to have one testicle slightly larger or hanging lower than the other. But a noticeable increase in size or weight in one testicle may mean that something is wrong. Lumps or swellings Gently feel each testicle individually. It should be smooth with no lumps or swellings. Compare one testicle with the other. It is unusual to develop cancer in both testicles at the same time. Tubes You should feel a soft tube at the top and back of the testicle (the epididymis). Don't confuse it with an abnormal lump. You should also feel the firm, smooth tube of the spermatic cord, which runs up from the epididymis. You should see your doctor if you have: an unusual lump or swelling in part of one testicle a sharp pain in the testicle or scrotum a heavy scrotum Your symptoms are unlikely to be cancer but it's important to get them checked by a doctor. Remember testicular cancer is very treatable and curable. Early diagnosis really does save lives.
