the Co-op and the local community for supporting us.” Store Manager Matt Bricknell said: “As a Co-op we are part of the community, at the heart of the community, and this scheme is a good way of giving back. Cancer touches everyone so Birstall BAGS is a good cause to support.”

Charnwood Borough Council are conducting a Community Governance Review (CGR) which looks at existing boundaries for towns and parishes, and the numbers of councillors. The reviews are carried out every 10 to 15 years to ensure arrangements remain reflective of local communities and to take account of any changes such as large new housing developments which result in increases in the population. The Broadnook Garden suburb, 1650 new homes north of Birstall, is one of the reasons the review is necessary – the site is located within the existing boundary of Wanlip. Wanlip is not large enough to have a parish council as it has less that 150 electors – it has a parish meeting. Residents have indicated they do not wish Broadnook to be within the Wanlip parish boundary. Birstall Parish Council discussed its response to the CGR at a meeting on April 10. Chair Ann Marshall said it would be sensible to suggest that Birstall and Wanlip be combined into a single parish council. It was agreed that Cllr Marshall contact the Chair of Wanlip Parish Meeting Continued on page 2

Call for dog park in Birstall 234 PEOPLE have signed a petition calling for a dog park in Birstall. The petition is calling for Birstall Parish Council to allocate an area off the Meadow Lane playing field for dogs to be exercised off the lead. Dog owners can exercise dogs off the lead on Watermead Country Park and on the fields behind the telephone exchange on Fielding Road. On Birstall’s playing fields, a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) requires dogs be kept on a lead and an enforcement officer has issued 21 penalty notices since January 1. Fines are £80, reduced to £50 if paid within two weeks. Those calling for the dog park say they need a safe place to exercise their dogs. Birstall Parish Council has discussed dog parks and consulted with dog owners including organising a meeting that was attended by 15 members of the public. It concluded there was Corgi Gas Reg. Installers not enough room on Birstall’s playing fields and feared that any such area would become a dog toilet. Birstall Parish Council Clerk Sue Coulson said: “We have often had complaints from residents about dog fouling and sometimes dogs being off leads and therefore spoiling the enjoyment of the playing fields for others. .“We don’t want to issue fixed penalty notices to people but we feel this may be the best way to deter them. If you don’t want a fine, clean up after your dog and keep them on a lead. We have taken this action for the benefit of residents and for the health and well being of everyone who uses the playing fields.” • A PSPO can last for up to three years when it will be reviewed • An extension of the PSPO cannot be for a period of more than three years, although there is no limit on the number of times it can be renewed. • Where a PSPO is in force, the local authority that made the order may vary it by increasing or reducing the restricted area, or be altering or removing a prohibition or requirement included in the order or by adding a new one. The petition is at change.org (enter Birstall as a search term)

from page 1 to discuss the issue before the Parish council submits its response. It was agreed that Birstall should not be extended to include Broadnook. The A46 bypass is the natural northern boundary of the parish, and integrating Broadnook into the community was not realistic. It was agreed that the existing number of Birstall Parish councillors should remain unchanged at 20. The chair of Wanlip Parish Meeting Claire Myles does not think Wanlip residents would wish to lose their existing arrangement. She said: “We wouldn’t want to join up with Birstall, we work together when we need to. We would just be swallowed up.” Charnwood Borough Council will consider responses to this first stage of consultation before producing draft recommendations. These will go out for further public consultation in the summer/autumn of 2017. When considering their recommendations Charnwood must consider these criteria: • a sense of place and local distinctiveness • civic pride and values • the ability to deliver services efficiently The parish boundary of Wanlip was last changed in 2004 – the Hallam Fields estate and the park and ride site were moved from Wanlip into Birstall.

Gold awards for Birstall boxers GOLD AWARDS have been presented to two Birstall men who attend Carl Gunns’ boxing gym.

THE BIRSTALL POST MAY 2017

Lee Fenn (37) of Denegate Avenue has been going to the Birstall Road gym for two years – his three children attend the Sunday morning class. Lewis Gutteridge (28) of Gwendolin

Avenue has been attending for five years. The Gold award is the highest grade awarded to boxers at the gym and is equivalent to being a registered amateur boxer. Candidates must have reached a certain level of sparring, padwork, defence, skipping and exercises in the ring. Lewis said: “I’ve really got a lot out of coming here, I’ve learned to box and it’s made me fitter and healthier. I finish work, come straight to the gym and it’s great for releasing stress.” Lee said: “I had a serious illness two years ago and I was really low, fitness wise. This award scheme has been great, it’s really spurred me on, I’ve lost weight and it’s really been life changing for me. It’s a really old school gym, no fancy equipment with flashing lights, just blood, sweat and tears – and it works.” Trainer Dean Spencer said: “It takes a lot of dedication to get this gold award and these two lads have shown they have the commitment to do it.”

Parish Council notes

A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on April 10. A member of the public sought to be co-opted to fill a vacancy on the council and spoke to councillors in support of his application. There was one vote in favour of co-option and 11 against. The Council agreed to authorise an annual subscription to the Leicestershire & Rutland Association of Local Councils and to the National Association of Local Councils of £409 and £702 respectively. It was agreed that the Council’s annual report be distributed with the Birstall Post and with Your Local. It was agreed to award grant aid of £350 to the big Birstall Yard sale. It was agreed to request further details from Birstall United Juniors Football Club before agreeing to make a grant. Councillors considered their response to Charnwood Borough Council’s Community Governance Review. Chair Ann Marshall said it would be sensible for Birstall Parish Council and Wanlip Parish Meeting be combined into a single authority: Birstall and Wanlip Parish Council. It was agreed that Birstall should not be extended to include the 1650 new homes planned at Broadnook Garden Suburb,

north of Birstall. It was agreed that the existing number of councillors remain unchanged at 20. It was reported that the planning application for the Hallam Fields Community Hall had been submitted. The build costs will be £500,000 paid by developer Jelson Ltd. A working party consisting of parish councillors, the architect and representatives from Charnwood, Jelson and the Palmer Tomkinson Trust will meet regularly and report back to the Parish Council. It was reported that a family had been locked in the Harrowgate Drive playing fields. Notices displaying an emergency contact telephone number have been put up on site. A resident has complained about damaging their coat on nails on the path from Worcester Avenue to the Meadow Lane playing field. The council agreed to pay £50 compensation as a full and final settlement. It was reported that Charnwood Environmental Health were aware of a property in very poor condition on Allington Drive, and were working with the homeowner to try to rectify the problem. The Annual Parish meeting was held

on April 12. It was attended by four members of the public. Chair Ann Marshall explained the aim of the meeting was to inform the electorate of Parish Council activities over the last year, set out in the 12 page annual report, and to hear any issues or questions raised by the public. Cllr Marshall identified three items from the annual report : the fencing on Meadow Lane had improved the safety of the road; securing indexation for the sum contributed by developer Jelson for the Hallam Fields Community Hall with the help of the Palmer Tomkinson Trust and appointing an enforcement officer for the Public Space Protection Order relating to dogs on parish council land. Projects for next year include refurbishing the public toilets on the School Lane playing field so they are resistant to attacks by vandals, improving the kitchen in the village hall, improving an area at the cemetery, and the construction of the Hallam Fields Community Hall. Birstall Police Constable Dave Jaeckels reported on behalf of the beat team. He said Birstall was a “fairly safe place to live”, there are around 500 reported crimes a year which for an area this size is “not a massive amount of crime”. He said the biggest increase this year had been vehicle crime, which was county wide. There have been a number of arrests. A team of police experts are investi-

gating the methods thieves are using, as in a lot of cases there is no evidence of a forced break-in. PC Jaeckels said that burglaries were lower, with around 50-60 a year. The current police priorities are damage to motor vehicles, such as wing mirrors being broken or stones thrown at vehicles. PC Jaeckels said he knows the people responsible are from Beaumont Leys but has been unable to secure sufficient evidence. He has spoken to them and the incidents have reduced. PC Jaeckels said he had done 10 speed checks in the last year, with the speed gun provided by Birstall Parish Council. The speeds of a total of 1600 vehicles had been measured on Sibson Road, Wanlip Lane, Birstall Road and Greengate Lane. 31 verbal warnings were given and two motorists reported for prosecution. PC Jaeckels reported that in the last year three Birstall properties had been discovered to have been used for growing large amounts of cannabis plants. 300 plants were found in one property. Evelyn Holden from Birstall & Wanlip NHW reported on the last year- 3000 households out of a total of 5400 are paid up members of NHW schemes. Borough Councillor David Gaskell is coming to the end of his year as the Mayor of Charnwood. He reported that he had attended 500 functions and had raised £5500 for his two chosen charities: Birstall Special Needs Playgroup and Cancer Research, Birstall He said he was looking at ways of extending CCTV coverage in Birstall, along Sibson Road. He said he had noticed a decline in police numbers across the county. Birstall’s County Councillor Iain Bentley said the most notable project this year had been securing the construction of the new Hallam Fields primary school which will open in September. He said the bus shelter he provided on Wanlip Lane had not been vandalised, unlike those on the A6. He has been asked to provide another shelter on the Loughborough Road near Firfield Avenue and hopes that the local authorities will fund or part fund construction of the base. A member of the public commented that two boarded up shops on The Triangle, a former insurance broker and a pizza takeaway, were in a poor condition. Three members of the public expressed their concerns about the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) on Birstall’s playing fields which require dogs to be kept on a lead at all times. Comment was made that a lot of people had had their lives disrupted by this restriction and that there should have been a wider public consultation. One said: “I should have an area where I can walk my dog in comfort” and that the council should consider providing a space on its land where dogs can be exercised off the lead. Elderly people or those with mobility problems found it difficult to get to Watermead Country Park, which some consider to be an unsafe place. The Parish council could charge the PSPO to a dogs on lead by direction order. Chair Ann Marshall said there had been public consultation including meetings with dog owners. It was felt that there was insufficient space for a dog park, Parish councillor Roy Rollings said one outcome of the public consultation was that there was not evidence there was strong support for dog parks.

Epic end to end C90 challenge Local elections THERE ARE only days to go until voters in Birstall will be asked who will represent them on the county council for the next four years. The Conservative party have led the council for the last 16 years and have a majority of seven. There are 55 seats on the council. The candidates are: Iain Bentley (Con), Sanjay Gogia (Lab), Simon Murray (UKIP) and Simon Sansome (LibDem). There is also an election to fill a vacancy on Charnwood Borough Council, caused by the resignation of Serinda Shergill. The candidates for the Birstall Wanlip Ward are: Norman Cutting (Ind), Sanjay Gogia (Lab), Roy Rollings (Con), Simon Sansome (Lib Dem) The date of the election is Thursday May 4, 2017.

A GROUP of five friends are riding from Land's End to John O’Groats this month, to raise money for local cancer charity Birstall BAGS and Marie Curie. The group will be tackling the 850 mile journey on Honda C90 motorcycles over three days, riding for 9 to 10 hours a day. Ian Hay, Andy Swain, Steve Lord and Nigel Brown from Birstall, and Luke Welbourne from Melton, came up with the idea after the consumption of a few fine ales at The Old Plough. Ian said: “The following days saw a flurry of activity on the various on-line auction sites as the team members secured their bikes. The majority were non-runners, so many hours of restoration ensued to make them road worthy and ready for the challenge ahead. “Why C90’s? Well back in the 70’s/early 80’s these bikes were more often than not the first bikes we rode, generally across the fields, so we have a bit of a soft spot for these classic pressed metal frame machines.” The Honda C90 Challenge team are experienced motorcyclists and own various bikes from superbikes to classics and in recent years have organised trips to France, Isle of Mann and Spain.

progress. They have set up fund raising page https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/hon dacrangechallenge with the funds being split equally between both charities. Ian said: “If you can donate something, no matter how small, please do as we would like to raise £2000, so our challenge makes a difference and contributes to securing the cancer support

services both locally and nationally. “If any businesses would like to sponsor a bike, please do get in touch as we can display your company logo on the bike and we will add this to our web page and any local press or other promotional press releases we do. All contact details are on the fundraising web page.”

Ian said: “This challenge will of course present its own set of challenges such as low top speed 45mph ish, a range of 90 miles between petrol stops, the obvious seating issues and the nemesis, hills.” He added: “We are looking forward to the challenge and really can’t wait to do the part of the ride from Fort William to Inverness, as we will be following the various Lochs all the way. I think the worst part will simply be physically riding for 9 to 10 hours per day as you still need to be totally switched on when riding any motorbike no matter how big they are”. All the Honda C90 Challenge team have been touched in some way by cancer either directly themselves, by partners having the disease, or through the loss of parents, other family members or friends. Ian said: “As such we all have first-hand experience of the vitally important care and support services provided for by the Birstall Bags and Marie Curie. Obviously, without the generosity of the public these services would not exist, leaving sufferers and their families without access to clinical and emotional assistance.” The challenge begins in Land’s End on May 29 and will twist its way up the country stopping in Shrewsbury, Glasgow and finally John O’Groats. Hallam Fields Reading the two letters regarding the ‘new’ Hallam Fields development, I can understand the mobility scooter user concern regarding dropped kerbs. In my travels recently around the estate, I noticed at least one where the tactile slabs had been thoughtfully provided, but the ‘kerbing’ team had forgotten to drop the actual kerbs although it is normal for the kerbs to be dropped first and the tactile slabs may or may not be put in at the same time. At least that was the procedure in the area before I moved up here last year. Existing roads need

funding from Borough and I used to be on an access committee on the Borough where I used to live which addressed all these sorts of problems and had an annual budget but I don’t believe Charnwood has. If I remember correctly, there is a maximum limit of about 20mm drop (too little and rain water flowing along the gully, will spill over to the footway) so there will always be a small step which most scooters will cope with easily if approached straight. The drawback is that motorists think they are there to allow parking on the footway (which is illegal). The other writer regarding access from the Greengate Estate to Hallam Fields, I would hope the road access between the two estates (via Queensgate Drive) would allow a bus service to the estate as a circular route could be promoted even if just extending the 22B route, before trying to ‘adjust’ the way into Leicester. Logically, new development on the other side of the A46 would enable an additional route to include Wanlip, Birstall and the three estates. Having said that, there is a lack of links east/west which needs addressing. Name & Address supplied

Expression In response to the article in the April edition regarding dog fouling, I do wonder whether the canine pictured had been caught in the act and ticketed, as its expression was one of surprise and

Community hall Hooray! Hallam Fields Community Hall plans have been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council on 3rd April 2017 (Planning Reference P/17/0666/2). At long last this is a visible step in the right direction to get the Community Hall off the ground. Time marches on surprisingly quickly, so this building needs to be completed by the end of 2019, otherwise the monies from the Section 106 Agreement which has been granted to Birstall Parish Council for this project will have to be handed back to the developer. This was raised and confirmed at the Cabinet Meeting of Charnwood Borough Council, on March 16, 2017 (Item 5 Question Under Cabinet Procedure 10.7 raised by Councillor Renata Jones). This is positive news for the residents of Birstall as it will provide another community facility for hire within Birstall. There are frequent enquiries on social media "Spotted Birstall", for halls or facilities for hire for recreational purposes. This will be a purpose built hall providing access for all ages and abilities. It will be located between Cedar Mews Care Home and the shops, known as the Central Hub as detailed on the original plans for Hallam Fields (Planning Reference P/00/2057/2). There should be no problems with car parking as there is a large car park located outside the shops in front of the

Cedar Mews Care Home. To identify the new Community Hall could the Birstall Parish Council consider calling this the 'Tara Centre' ,after the late Tara PalmerTomkinson, the daughter of one of the families who previously owned the land on which the Hallam Fields created? It is appreciated Cedars Academy has a new wing called the Palmer-Tomkinson Building. Lets all look forward to this new facility, its completion by December 2019 and being able to use it for events which meet the needs of all residents within Birstall and beyond. Hallam Fields Resident.

Thanks I would like to extend a very big “Thank You” to everyone who came to my assistance on Wednesday April 5 at about 4pm on Wanlip Lane, Birstall when I had an unfortunate collision with a mobility scooter. They were Thomas and friend, Haidee, Rachel and their families, staff from the Co-Op Store, the Earl of Stamford and Claire, proprietor of Shapes Hairdressers. To everyone “thank you” for your very kind assistance, it was so needed and appreciated. Brenda Watts

NHW news

& crime report SPRING IS here and many of us are enjoying our gardens again. It is now a good time to check the security of your home and garden. Try and view them as a would be burglar and see if there is anything that you can do to improve your security. There are many products available that can help, such as: Security lighting, burglar alarms, cctv, timer switches, fence spikes and security padlocks (to name a few) There are also measures that you can take that do not cost anything. Trimming back trees and shrubbery near your property is always a good idea, as they can shield a burglar from the view of neighbours and passers by. Securing all of your garden equipment and tools is essential, as they can be used by opportunist burglars. It is also a good idea to either move your bins away from near your property, or padlock them with a chain. It has been known for them to be used to enter your property (by climbing on them). At our monthly advice shops we offer advice on security, as well as selling security items at cost price. Our next advice shop is on Saturday May 20, from 10 am until midday. We are located in the old council office, opposite the garden centre. From Birstall & Wanlip NHW

WE HAVE seen a slight fall in recorded crime in March with a total of 37 crimes being reported, many of which were again thefts from vehicles with another 13 being reported during the month. In the early hours of the 7th March a male was arrested after being seen breaking into a vehicle on Roman Road. He was later charged with two offences, however despite this the thefts have continued with several more being reported since this date. CCTV footage from one of these later incidents shows a group of males walking along the street & trying car door handles as if looking for insecure vehicles, so the message remains to ensure your car is locked and secure at all times as this still appears to be the main way that the offenders are getting in. There have been five house burglaries this month, which is slightly down from last month and one robbery, where a male had his bike stolen from him whilst going through Watermead Park. This was recovered nearby a short time later, however unfortunately no suspects have been identified in relation to this incident. The vast majority of other crimes this month have been damage offences (five in total) and shop thefts / drive-offs from the petrol station (nine in total). For further crime information please visit: www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL60/ Crime Prevention Advice From April 1, 2017 a Home Office change will have an impact on the way that the Police record burglaries, as any structure broken into that is in the grounds of a residential address (e.g. garages, sheds & summerhouses) will be classified as a ‘residential burglary’. As such, & with the summer approaching this would appear to be a good time to remind residents to review the security of such outbuildings: 1. Consider fitting an alarm to your shed or summerhouse and fit it a good

quality locking mechanism to the door, ensuring that any screws used cannot be accessed, as otherwise these can be easily removed allowing entry to be gained. 2. If you keep expensive tools in your shed or garage, consider storing these in a locked toolbox so they cannot be used by a thief to try & break into your house. Also, consider locking cycles together when stored in a shed so that cannot be easily stolen or used as a means of escape. Neighbourhood update The beat team have been out conducting some speed checks this month on Wanlip Lane and Birstall Road. In just under two hours we had a total of 403 vehicles through the two sites with five drivers being stopped and spoken to for travelling above 35mph and one reported for going over 40mph. We will continue to do these checks as and when we can and will report the results in future newsletters. Meet your local police team

BBQ ban

THE BIRSTALL POST MAY 2017

A BAN on BBQs in the Leicester City section of Watermead Country Park has been introduced by the City Council. The ban came into effect on April 28. Leicestershire County Council, who manage the northern section of the park, introduced a ban last year. Park users and neighbouring residents have been complaining about excessive litter, and parking problems in Alderton Close, Thurmaston. There have also been reports of large groups drinking alcohol, antisocial behaviour and loud music being played through speakers. Leicester City Council say a litter picking team goes into the park every morning and that their park wardens make regular patrols.

Allotments get upgrade A £310,000 programme of works to upgrade Red Hill allotments has been completed.

The site, situated just north of Red Hill Circle, is adjacent to the Great Central Railway’s Leicester North station, where plans to build a new heritage railway museum are underway. A deal with Leicester City Council saw a strip of land required for the museum returned to the Council in exchange for a £310,000 package of improvements to the allotments. These included totally resurfaced roads, new fencing, a new access road, a new pedestrian entrance and improved security. In addition, eleven new plots of varying sizes have been created on former allotment land that has been returned to the site. Red Hill Lettings Steward, Rita Randall, said: “We are delighted with the work, which has led to major improvements across the site. The new plots have been ploughed and rotavated by the Council, so are ready to let. Anyone interested in renting one can phone me on 0116 299 3056.”

STUDENTS AND staff at The Cedars Academy raised £793 for Comic Relief by selling merchandise and having a non-uniform day (pictured above). Students also took part In the Cedars Academy/Charnwood Area Centre concert on April 6 in the Palmer Tomkinson Centre. The concert featured all of the Cedars and Charnwood Area Centre Ensembles, plus several of Julie Wright's African drumming groups (pictured right) which include Highcliffe and Cedars pupils.

THE SPEED limit on a section of Leicester Road between Geengate Lane and Thurcaston is set to be reduced. A Leicester City Council spokesperson said: “We are proposing changing a short section of Leicester Road from the national speed limit of 60mph to 30mph. A further section may become a 20mph zone. “We have submitted our proposals to Thurcaston & Cropston parish council as part of this process, but plans are still in their early stages and in any case we would not anticipate any change before 12-18 months’ time. “Local residents will be kept fully informed of plans as they develop, which are also likely to include further improvements to footways and cycleways in the area. “We have already consulted on changing the speed limits in this area and received no objections.”

“Among the stuff we are doing this year is having talks from invited speakers, a summer supper and a New Year’s meal, outings and a Christmas party” said spokeswoman Leigh Reid. “Strong links are also being forged by our members with Cedar Mews Care Home, Birstall's brand new home for older people, and these links are being strengthened with visits and with music” she added. “We enjoy our meetings of fun and friendship, and every year we choose a charity to support and have events to raise funds for that charity. We do try to support a charity that may not be high-profile but is perhaps local to our area and needing funds. Last year we chose to support Assistance Dogs, those incredibly clever, friendly, furry-faced helpers of people that need other hands, or paws, to cope with life, with laundry, picking up post, and generally fetching and carrying, as well as being a companion. I am proud to say we raised £3550 for them. “This year, we have chosen to raise funds for the Leicester Children's Holiday Home in Mablethorpe, which provides much happiness for children who may not otherwise get away from Leicester on a holiday - to run on a beach and stroke donkeys - wonderful stuff! “If you would like to join us in our 'work and play' you would be very welcome. We meet on the second Monday of each month in the Parish Hall (at the bottom of School Lane) at 7.30 p.m. At the end of our meetings there is always tea, coffee and biccies!” If you would like any further information, please contact Jane Scott on (0116) 2673761 or Leigh Reid on (0116) 2676550.

Cedars raises funds for Comic Relief

News from the churches Easter is one of the highlights of the year for churchgoers and this year was no exception. One event which stays in the memory is the occasion when all the churches came together for the annual Walk of Witness on Good Friday, when, led by a wooden cross, a large column of people walked along Sibson Road, pausing at different points, to offer prayers for the local residents and businesses and sing hymns, to recall Jesus' walk to Calvary and to his crucifixion. The hot cross buns and coffee at the final stop at St Theresa's Church were very welcome on a fine but cool day! A group of church members were happy to be invited to visit the new Cedar Mews Care Home on Hallam Fields to conduct a short service and sing some hymns with the residents, and a similar visit, which has become an annual event, was made to the Watermead Court in the village a few days later, to celebrate Easter. It is not often that Easter is so late that we have another Bank Holiday only two weeks later, as we do this year. The Social committee of St James and St Nicholas are already looking even further ahead, with the plans for a trip to Peterborough by coach on Saturday June 3. The annual Parish Holiday, this year in Herefordshire, from June 26-30. It is also hoped to arrange a visit to a matinee performance of "Hobson's Choice" at the Stamford Shakespeare (open-air) theatre on Saturday August 5. For more information about these events please contact Sandra on 2677238 The Birstall and Wanlip Annual Parish meeting always takes place shortly before Easter, when the events of the previous year are reviewed and members of the Council are elected, to replace any whose term of office have come to an end. This year there were 10 vacancies on the Council and all these were filled by newly elected parishioners. The Rector thanked all those who had served faithfully in the last 12 months and welcomed the new members for the coming year. Two particularly praise -worthy church members, Tony Bloxam and Sandra Robinson were subsequently honoured by the Queen on Maundy Thursday when they received Maundy money from her at the Cathedral. We congratulate them on this great honour.

Thy Kingdom Come in Birstall Between May 25 (Ascension Day) and June 4 (Pentecost Sunday) the churches in Birstall will share with many other churches in a time of prayer. Starting on Friday May 26 there will be two daily services of prayer, one at 1pm at St Theresa’s in Whiles Lane and the other at the Methodist Church on Wanlip Lane at 7pm. There will be a box at the Coffee Shop (and at other village locations too) into which people may put prayer requests. These boxes will be emptied daily and the requests included in the services. You do not need to put your name on the prayer requests, unless you wish to do so. It is hoped to set up a prayer station at the Methodist Church for a few hours each day during the nine days. New Methodist Circuit Appointment As well as having a new Superintendent (Rev’d Edson Dube) appointed to the ‘new’ Leicester Trinity Circuit, it is pleasing to report that a lady who is an ex London District Chair has also been appointed to the Circuit. We look forward to welcoming Rev’d Jenny Impey from September. Three ministers from the ‘existing’ Trinity Circuit are staying on, and we shall occasionally see them leading worship. They are Rev’ds Fran Rhys, Saidu Kanu and David Willis. These three ministers are meeting monthly with Rev’ds Dave Warnock and Rev Paula Hunt from the ‘existing’ Leicester North Circuit. New Local Preachers lead our Methodist worship Two new Local Preachers who are still in early stages of their training will be leading the morning worship at two services in May. Jo Leatherland is an ex Elim Pentecostal lay preacher who is part of Syston Methodist Church. Jo is a Youth Worker in Nottingham and warns us ‘you may be asked to participate’ in her services. Jo is at Birstall on May 7.

Juliet Kisob is well-known at Birstall. Juliet is an ex Cameroon Presbyterian who grew up in a society that placed less value on girls … her story is a testimony of how, unknown to us, the Holy Spirit goes before us opening the way, and how he orders our footsteps to fulfil Gods plans & purpose in our lives. Juliet leads worship on May 28. Both Jo and Juliet will be accompanied by their mentors. From Birstall Methodist Church

Sunday Services in May All of our morning services this month will be held in the Community Room at Highcliffe Primary School, Greengate Lane (LE4 3DL) and start at 10.45am, as usual. There is a Sunday School for junior children during the morning services. Our evening service, held in Birstall and starting at 6pm, will be on the 28th: please ring the number below for the venue. We do extend a warm invitation for you to join us for any of these services. The Lodge Trust Regular readers of this News will know that we support the work of The Lodge Trust, a Christian charity based in Market Overton, Rutland (LE15 7PL), which provides care and training for adults with learning disabilities. Their annual Family Fun Day this year will be held on Saturday 20th May (10.30am to 3.30pm). Among the attractions there will be displays, many games to test your skill (or just for fun) and stalls selling new items, bric-a-brac, craft items made by the residents, plants and the ever-popular homemade cakes. The Country Café and other food outlets will supply a range of foods for you to enjoy. Details about The Lodge (and the Family Fun Day) can be found on its website www.lodgetrust.org.uk , Facebook and Twitter. The Lodge phone number is: 01572 767234. WI news BIRSTALL & WANLIP WI watched Peter Wood turn a beautiful dibber when he gave members a demonstration of chair bodging at their April meeting. Spokeswoman Andrea Scott said: “Using elm logs he sat on his shaving horse and formed a rough cylinder and then he used a pole lathe and plenty of leg power to turn a beautiful dibber. He made it look so easy it was almost magic.” All are welcome to the group’s coffee morning at Birstall Methodist Church on May 20 where there will be homemade cakes, plants and crafts for sale as well as special Lucky Bags. Andrea said “Our first Crafting and Chatting at Cedar Mews Care Home proved to be a lot more chatting than crafting but we got to know some of the residents and hopefully they will be joining us when we make greetings cards at our next meeting on April 21. “Birstall and Wanlip WI was formed I 1918 and we are currently sharing ideas on how to celebrate next year’s very special birthday.” Beverly won the competition ‘a wooden treasure’ with her collection of lace bobbins. Next month on May 8 in Elmfield Hall the group will hear from the Workhouse Story Tellers and the competition will be ‘your oldest photograph’. From Birstall & Wanlip WI

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Diet and Cancer What we eat and our dietary habits have long been thought to influence cancer amongst other ill health problems. In addition it is one of the first things a newly diagnosed cancer patient will ask “what foods will help me or what foods should I avoid’. Research Unfortunately there hasn’t been much research carried out to support some of the beliefs about diet and cancer. Those interested in addressing their diet are often vulnerable and at risk of considering unnecessary sometimes costly options that have little evidence to support them. Some would say there is no ‘smoke without fire though’ and thank fully Cancer Research UK is investing into research into diet and the impact it can have on cancer growth and treatment. Cancer Research UK scientists have recently found that removing two nonessential amino acids – serine and glycine – from the diet of mice slowed the development of lymphoma and intestinal cancer. The researchers also found that the special diet made some cancer cells

more susceptible to chemicals. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy boost levels of these chemicals in the cells, so this research suggests a specially formulated diet could make conventional cancer treatments more effective. The findings suggest that restricting specific amino acids through a controlled diet plan could be an additional part of treatment for some cancer patients in future, helping to make other treatments more effective. The next stage would be to set up clinical trials with cancer patients to assess the feasibility and safety of such a treatment. Internet While the evidence remains scant it is difficult for people to decide what is helpful and what is not. There are two excellent websites that explore diet and cancer in detail and reference where there is evidence to support a dietary theory. Professor Robert Thomas is the driving force behind http://www.cancernet.co.uk/diet.htm. Prof Thomas is a respected oncologist who is well versed in appraising evidence and making recommendation for patients. He has written some useful books to support self help in patients too covering many subjects including

diet. A second site www.canceractive.com was started and is still very much driven by Chris Woollams who has a degree in Biochemistry from Oxford University. In 2001 his daughter developed a brain tumour and was given six months to live. Both Chris and Catherine searched the world for cancer treatments and discovered that there was so much information 'out there' but it was not being passed on. As a result they felt people were not so much dying of cancer, but of ignorance! They determined to do something about it. They founded CANCERactive, a charity with a big difference. It doesn't just cover orthodox therapies but has extensive coverage of complementary and alternative therapies too. With over 3200 pages the web site receives 2400 to 5000 hits a day!
