Charnwood Borough Council are conducting a Community Governance Review (CGR) which looks at existing boundaries for towns and parishes, and the numbers of councillors. The reviews are carried out every 10 to 15 years to ensure arrangements remain reflective of local communities and to take account of any changes such as large new housing developments which result in increases in the population. The Broadnook Garden suburb, 1650 new homes north of Birstall, is one of the reasons the review is necessary – the site is located within the existing boundary of Wanlip. Wanlip is not large enough to have a parish council as it has less that 150 electors – it has a parish meeting. Residents have indicated they do not wish Broadnook to be within the Wanlip parish boundary. Birstall Parish Council discussed its response to the CGR at a meeting on April 10. Chair Ann Marshall said it would be sensible to suggest that Birstall and Wanlip be combined into a single parish council.
