Popular baker retires

Car park barrier LOUD MUSIC and litter from drivers parking on the Sibson Road car park at night have been reported to the Police and Parish Council. A barrier will now be erected closing off the top section of the car park during the evenings. Police say the problems started in September 2016 with complaints from neighbours that loud music was being played until 2 or 3am. In October Birstall beat officer PC Dave Jaeckels spoke to a number of the drivers who were apologetic and said they would keep the noise down, but complaints about noise continued to be made. Returning 10 days later when around

A MUCH loved Birstall bakery is closing in June. Allen’s Family Bakery on Sibson Road has been in the village for 12 years, run by Harry and Glenda Allen and their son Daniel. Harry, 65, has been a baker since he was fifteen. A typical day for Harry starts at midnight when he turns up to the shop to prepare and bake the bread, cakes and savouries which is all done in the back room of the premises. He’ll then often work through until 3.30pm.

I need to slow down, it’ll be a semiretirement” he said. “My son Daniel is taking it on, he has his own ideas and he’ll develop the business.” The bakery is moving to a commercial unit on Cannock Street, Thurmaston where it will concentrate on supplying the wholesale trade which currently makes up 75% of the turnover. “I’ll miss the banter with the customers” said Harry, “we’ve had a good laugh, we’ve stuck to traditional methods and tried to provide a good service, a

12 cars were parked up, PC Jaeckels was surrounded by 25 people who became “agitated and argumentative”. They were a different group from PC Jaeckels' first visit. Between November 2016 and May 2017, complaints have continued to come in about noise, cars racing on Sibson Road and Birstall Road, and handbrake turns on the car park. One complainant went to speak to the driver and received verbal abuse. Another was followed home and had car horns sounded outside her house. This resulted in the Police issuing formal ASB warning letters to the owners of four vehicles. One resident who lives nearby told the Birstall Post: “It’s awful, it’s mostly on Friday and Saturday nights, you can hear

We wish Harry and his family all the best for the future.” Charlotte Foy from The White Horse said: “Harry and Glenda were immediately positive when I mentioned the idea of the great Birstall bake off and they have been judges at all four we have done so far, giving their time and expertise, particularly in the bread section. They really got involved, helping to give out application forms and offering free yeast. They also make the best bacon and mushroom cob around! I am so sad that they will be leaving Sibson Road and there won’t be anywhere left in Birstall to buy ‘proper’ bread. I wish them well for the future and hope Glenda gets to New York!” When the Birstall shop closes on June17, Harry won’t be retiring completely and will continue baking at the Thurmaston premises. “He’ll be coming in around 3.30am” said son Daniel. “That will be a real lie in for Harry.”

noise and cars whizzing round, then in the morning the litter is very bad.” Last year the police recommended that the Parish Council, who own the car park, install a barrier to prevent night time access. At the time the council decided not to progress with the barrier but to extend CCTV coverage to the top section of the car park and to urge the police to deal with the problem. The top section is used by residents and businesses for overnight parking. At a parish council meeting in May, councillors considered a further report from PC Jaeckels and were informed of a complaint received in the parish office from a resident. It was agreed that to put a stop to this antisocial behaviour a barrier gate be erected along the pedestrian crossing leading to the top section of the car park. It will cost £2494 and will be locked at the same time as other council owned facilities. Chair of Birstall Parish Council Ann Marshal said: “It’s disappointing that the behaviour of a few has necessitated the erection of a barrier in the Sibson Road car park. The loud noise, the litter, including broken glass, is causing a nuisance to neighbours and we have been left with no choice. We do have the option to reassess the situation if the barrier works and they move on somewhere else.” From April 1 to August 31 the barrier will be unlocked at 8am and locked again at 9.30pm.

From September 1 to March 31 the barrier will be unlocked at 8am and locked again at 7pm. The gates are expected to be installed this month. Signage will be placed in the car park about the closing times. PC Dave Jaeckels said: “I am very pleased that the Parish council have supported us and agreed to install a gate on the Sibson Road car park. A number of local residents have had to put up with antisocial behaviour from a small minority of people for far too long and I am hopeful that this will bring an end to these problems by preventing the drivers from being able to access the car park in the evenings”. He added: “When the beat team is on duty we do respond to any calls that come in if possible and if we hear the cars coming into the car park we do speak to the drivers and monitor them, however this is not a long term solution to the problem as inevitably, once we have gone home for the night, or if we are not on duty, there is little that we can do and we are reliant on our response offices to attend to any calls that come in. “Unfortunately, due to how busy they are dealing with ‘higher priority’ incidents, calls about ASB will often not be attended, meaning that the drivers are not challenged at the time and we are unable to establish exactly who is involved, making it difficult to follow the incidents up later.”

Dementia friend BIRSTALL’S CEDAR Mews care home has appointed a Dementia Friends champion. As well as bespoke residential care, Cedar Mews also delivers specialist care to those living with dementia and is proud to now have its own ‘Dementia Friends Champion’. This is a volunteer trained and supported by the Alzheimer’s Society who encourages others to learn about dementia and how it affects people, including loved ones who are likely to be unfamiliar with the illness. Cedar Mews’ Dementia Friends Champion Ben Dalgetty runs regular information sessions in the community – held at Cedar Mews on Hallam Fields Road – and welcomes local people who are at different stages of the dementia journey. Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest-ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia and aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition. Ben said: “Becoming a Dementia Friend Champion has undoubtedly been one of the most positive and rewarding things I've done.” Cedar Mews will soon be organising dates for forthcoming Dementia Friends awareness sessions. If you would like more information please call Ben Dalgetty on 0116 267 4835 to confirm your place. If you would like to find out more about the care services available at Cedar Mews, call on 0116 267 4835. Alternatively, email cedar@cinnamoncc.com or visit www.cinnamoncc.com/cedar. The team is also on-hand to give tours of the home and answer any questions regarding the care and facilities available. Cedar Mews has an open day on Friday June 16. Visitors are invited to join their Big Lunch for the community – as part of national Care Home Open Day and enjoy entertainment, street food and see what life is like at Cedar Mews.

Scout gang show BEAVERS, CUBS, Scouts and Explorers made it a night to remember as they treaded the boards and put their best foot forward for their gang show at the Palmer Tomkinson centre in May. Vic Dolby in vintage Scout uniform compèred the evening starting with everyone on stage for a raucous Muppets number “It’s time to play the music”. Then we were on to individual acts, comprising Gareth on trumpet, Ritesh on keyboards and Ethan on drums, interspersed with comedy sketches and stories, to keep the audience laughing. The second half had everyone back on stage for a Scouting rendition of “Meet the Gang” followed by Arjun juggling, a new version of the all blacks “Harribo Haka” and Harry on saxophone. Things really heated up when the before the entire cast hit the stage for a explorers (aided by Group Scout leader Nick Farnham) in bright red tutu danced final traditional scouting rendition of the dance of the sugar plum fairy, some- “Riding along on a crest of a wave.” thing the audience won’t forget in a long Pics: Jack Chadwick tap dancer; Gareth Woods trumpet; Harry on saxophone time . Parish boundary RESIDENTS IN Wanlip are asking that their parish boundary be moved. At Wanlip’s Annual Parish meeting on May 12, attended by around 30 per cent of households, it was agreed to request that the boundary be moved so the planned Broadnook garden suburb of 1650 homes will not be within the parish. In a statement to Charnwood Borough Council, which is conducting a review of electoral boundaries. Claire Myles, chair of Wanlip Parish Meeting, said: “We wish Broadnook well … but feel no sense of affinity to the development and its future, it being separated from us by the A46, A6 and a major roundabout. “The growth it will bring to the area would swamp the existing Wanlip population of 156 and change the look and feel of our community for ever.” Wanlip’s boundary was last changed in 2004, so that the Hallam Fields estate would be within the parish of Birstall. In the statement to Charnwood, Wanlip also said it wishes to retain its Parish Meeting and not be combined with Birstall into a single Parish Council. Claire Myles said: “We are a small, active and engaged community. A Parish Meeting has served us well to the present day and will consider it will do for many years to come.”

New shop A SUPERMARKET will be opening soon at Hallam Fields. It will be a One Stop Store, which is owned by Tesco, and located on Hallam Fields Road near to the Cedar Mews care home.

Executive Headteacher for both schools, Scott Fewster, said: “I am delighted with the outcome and am proud of all the hard work that has taken place over the past year.” “I personally feel that the report has also given us a clear direction to aim in order to work towards an outstanding judgement in the future.” At Highcliffe inspectors found the school’s leadership is strong and has secured “considerable improvement” since they were appointed. Pupils make good progress in reading, writing and mathematics. The report states: “Pupils are welcoming, polite and courteous to each other and to adults. “Pupils’ conduct is good, and often

exemplary, at playtimes, during assemblies and around the school site.” To improve the school needs to evaluate pupils’ progress better, plan more work that challenges higher attaining pupils and develop mathematical skills more thoroughly for early years pupils. At Riverside, Inspectors found that the leadership and management are “much improved” and form a “very effective team.” Assessment of pupils is praised, twice a term each pupil is assessed by their teacher in reading, writing and mathematics. “This programme is playing a key role in improving pupils’ progress” said the Inspectors. Inspectors found that pupils’ work hard in class and enjoy learning. They are well mannered and polite. To improve the school needs to ensure pupils extend and develop their writing skills, and to modify its curriculum to fully meet the needs of the most able pupils. There are four ratings on Ofsted’s scale: Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate

Defies gravity With regard to the letter about dropped kerbs. I could travel on my scooter from the River Soar bridge on Loughborough Road all the way to Abbey Park Road to do some shopping at Sainsbury’s (no longer there). It was a bumpfree journey. I never head of any water running onto the pavement. Of course, that’s Leicester City territory. I wonder if the residents of Birstall realise that they live in an area so unique that the rainwater defies gravity and flows upwards. S Neal

Support group for new mums Birstall poet’s book

TWO BIRSTALL mums have started a group for mums with new babies in the area. Beccy Kay and Charlotte Foy met six years ago at a post natal group organised by health visitors. They became firm friends, and together with other members of the group, have supported each other through the stages of their children’s lives ever since. “It’s very reassuring to speak to other people who are going through the same things as you are” said Charlotte Foy. “A few words of camaraderie about the effects of sleepless nights or weaning can really alleviate worries or concerns particularly in those early months” The group offers mums with children up to one year old, a chance to meet with other mums, share ideas, provide support and socialise at a time that can often be challenging. “These opportunities sadly are no longer funded by local services” said Charlotte. Beccy said: “The atmosphere is relaxed and there is no long term sign up as it’s a drop in group at just £2 per session. We recognise that sometimes it is hard to commit to being there every week as babies are unpredictable little things. The group is in a large lounge where there are comfy playmats for the babies to lay on and lots of suitable toys and a sensory box for the babies to explore.

There will also be visiting experts popping into the group to cover actives such as swimming and reading with your baby. There is also tea and coffee and a biscuit or two for the mums.” Emma Page, a founding member of the group, said: “Acorn Babies is a fabulous new baby group that gives us new mums an opportunity to meet other new mums in a relaxed and comfortable setting. The weeks Teddy and I have attend Acorn Babies we have been greeted cheerfully by Charlotte and Becky who run the group, they always make me feel relaxed and are fabulous with all the babies!

“Having a cuppa and talking to others who are in the same situation has been a fab way to show me that I am not alone in my new challenges and a great way to make new friends!” The group is held on Tuesdays between 1 and 2.30pm at the Cedar Mews Care Home, Hallam Fields Road, Birstall, LE4 3LX. Take the first entrance into Hallam fields as you travel out of Birstall, follow the road round towards the Honey Hive Nursery and it’s immediately on the right. There is also a large car park. There is also a toddler group which has two sessions on a Monday morning. Both are situated on the Highcliffe School campus, Greengate Lane.

Andy (55) of Bramley Road said: “I’ve been writing poetry on and off for a while but more seriously over the past couple of years. I write mainly traditional rhyming poetry on various subjects but mainly from personal experience and subjects that interest me.” The book contains 36 poems and profits from sales will go to cancer charities. Three candidates had put themselves forward to become councillors, to fill two vacancies. A vote was taken and Daniel Withers and Gina Beck were co-opted. A report from PC Dave Jaeckels sated that crime in April was down and that theft from motor vehicles continues to be a major problem, a trend that is continuing in May with 20 incidents reported so far. Nine incidents occurred in one night, May 7/8, in the Iris Avenue, Gwendolin Avenue area. A 42 year old man has been arrested after being seen acting suspiciously. Vehicle crime is a policing priority. A male has been arrested in connection with three burglaries. There was antisocial behaviour, noise and littering, on the Sibson Road car park. Letters have been sent to the owners of the vehicles. There have also been reports of vehicles racing around the Hallam Fields industrial estate. A man has been arrested following a search of a house on Woodgate Drive where cannabis plants were being grown. The council considered a request for grant aid of £1500 from Birstall Bowling Club for a new water container for watering the greens. It was agreed that the Parish Council could pay for this out of its maintenance budget. It was agreed to award Birstall United Juniors Football club a grant of £2000, subject to the club’s application for a grant to the Football Foundation being successful. The club is looking to refurbish its clubhouse. The council agreed a petitions policy, a procedure for responding to petitions received. It was reported that the Council has submitted a planning application for the community hall at Hallam Fields. It was reported that there were a lot of complaints about antisocial behaviour on the council’s Sibson Road car park. Comment was made that the erection of a barrier preventing night time access would need to be considered again [on May 22, the Council’s Estates & Recreation Ctee agreed to install a barrier to close off the top section at night]

NHW news

& crime report THERE HAS been an increase in theft from motor vehicles this month, so it is time to make sure our cars do not attract the opportunist thief. Cars are broken into when there are items left on display, so it's best to take everything indoors and remember to lock the car. Potential thieves have been known to walk along, trying the handles of parked cars in the hope of finding an access. Parking continues to be a problem on some streets. It is essential that private drives are not blocked and if cars are parked on the road, there must be enough space between cars on opposite sides of the road for emergency vehicles to get through. If it is necessary to park partly on the pavement, enough room must be left for wheelchairs and double prams to pass through. The best place to park is, of course, in the garage, if you have one. Your car is then safe from theft and damage. If there is no garage, then use the driveway. Our grass verges become mud tracks when cars are parked on them. Our next Advice Shop is on May 20 at 10 Sibson Road, opposite the garden centre, from 10am until noon. All our security devices are sold at cost price and we have some free items. You can also get a free coffee, tea and biscuits! We look forward to seeing you there. From Birstall & Wanlip NHW

THERE HAS been another slight fall in reported crime in April, with a total of 30 crimes being reported during the month compared to 37 in March. Thefts from vehicles continues to be the main problem however with another 8 reported during April and despite a number of arrests & charges these offences still appear to be continuing. I will be liaising with our intelligence unit to see if there is any credibility to the theory that some kind of device is being used to bypass central locking systems, as in many cases there has been no sign of a forced entry again. In the meantime however, locking your vehicle and making sure there is nothing of value left inside it remains the best way to avoid becoming a victim, and so once again I would urge all residents to ensure that they are doing this. The number of burglaries reported this month has fallen to three (one of which was an attempt where no actual entry was gained) and we have only had five ‘other thefts’ (including shoplifting offences) reported in April, compared to nine last month, which is positive. Lastly, we had a couple of incidents reported last month where a male was seen exposing himself on the Gates Estate (once on Woodgate Drive and then again on Wellgate Avenue). The description of the male is limited however he was in a grey / silver coloured vehicle and so I would urge anyone who has any information about this, or may have also been a victim themselves, to get in touch with us on 101. For further crime information please visit: www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL60/ Crime Prevention Advice We are seeing an increasing number of burglaries in Birstall and across the

New maths department THE CEDARS Academy has opened its newly refurbished Mathematics Department. Paul Shepherd from the Cedars said: “All classrooms have the latest HD touch screens and pupils have been excited to be able to take a more active part in the lessons. “We are excited that these new facilities will lead to a much better learning environment for pupils and support them for making more progress. Some work remains to be done over the summer but we are very proud of this improvement to The Cedars Academy environment for all pupils.”

County where houses are being broken into in order to steal keys for expensive cars, such as BMW’s, Mercedes, Audi’s and Volkswagens. Modern vehicles are very difficult to steal without the keys so often this is the only way to steal them. If you do own such a car, consider keeping your keys in a safe or at least taking them upstairs with you at night. Never leave them hanging on a hook by the front door, as thieves can easily reach through letterboxes to steal them! It is also worth getting a tracking device fitted to your car as after stealing them, they will often be left parked up for a few days to see if anyone comes back to them, which gives us time to find the vehicle & recover it. Neighbourhood update Following information being received about cannabis possibly being grown at an address on Woodgate Drive, the beat team executed a warrant under the misuse of drugs Act this month, during which a number of cannabis plants were found. A male from the address was arrested and has been interviewed and released whilst further enquiries continue. The beat team continues to receive good intelligence about cannabis being grown at various addresses and we will endeavor to follow all of these up, so if you are involved in such activity, you have been warned! Group supports medical charity Petition policy

A LOCAL group has presented a cheque for £3550 to the charity Medical Detection Dogs. The Birstall St James Monday Group raised the money by holding fundraising events including a silent auction. Leader Jane Scott said: “Thanks to so many generous people who provided meals, cakes and outings and the equally generous people who bid for them – it was a huge success.” Wendy Coley received the cheque on behalf of the charity, which trains dogs to recognise human disease and medical conditions by odour, transforming the lives of their owners.

BIRSTALL PARISH Council has adopted a policy that sets out how it deals with petitions it receives.

Muntjac deer gets stuck in railings A MUNTJAC deer that got stuck in railings in Birstall was freed by a crew from Birstall’s Fire and Rescue Station. Having calmed the deer down, the crew managed to release the frightened deer by cutting the railings. It was taken to Medivet Birstall on Sibson Road. The vets discovered that the deer had suffered a fractured spine trying to free itself and as it could not recover, the decision was made to put it down. There are six types of deer living wild in Great Britain. The Scottish red deer and roe deer are the only native species. Muntjac were brought to Britain from China in the early 20th century. LOROS opens bigger shop

Cricket Corner

THE JOHN Lewis of Birstall is how one customer has described the new LOROS charity shop on Sibson Road. Having moved into much larger premises a few doors along from its old shop on the parade, the wider choice of clothes, bric-a-brac and homeware is expected to provide a better experience for shoppers and to increase the volume of sales. “Customers say they like the space and the choice” said Pauline Law, one of the shop managers. “There is a much wider variety of goods and I think we’ll double the takings” added shop manager Helen Brookhouse Yeo LOROS shop volunteer Vera Hewing (91) was invited to cut the ribbon and officially open the new shop. She said: “LOROS shops are brilliant but they need more volunteers. Get our there and get volunteering, I say, LOROS are really supportive, for me it’s been like having another family.”

Birstall Cubs enjoy fire station visit ON A chilly evening Birstall Cubs visited their local Fire and Rescue station in an attempt to turn up the heat. “After a roll call and head count to sign in the troops it wasn’t long before the alarm was sounded, testing out their rapid response” said Scout Leader Ged Sessions. “Fortunately it was only a test to keep them on their toes. Next, on a serious note it was down to the business of fire safety in the home and fire causes and prevention in a question and answer session. Lots of vital information was

gained towards earning their Fire Safety badge.” The Cubs were then given a hands on tour of the equipment and appliances used by the Fire Service. Ged said: “The Cubs were enthralled by the equipment, ranging from hoses to light-weight pumps, which still take 2 people to carry, to lifting bags used when rescuing people from vehicles in

road traffic incidents. A firm favourite amongst the group had to be the compressors and cutting gear used for taking doors and roofs off vehicles.” As this was going on the aerial platform was being raised in the yard outside ready for a demonstration of fire-fighting above tall buildings. Ged said: “With great enthusiasm the Cubs raced outside to see fire-fighters on the platform, standing over 20 meters in the air, spraying gallons of water over the roof. “Then came the piece de resistance for the Cubs, they all got to experience what it is like to be in control of the powerful force of a high pressure hose when trying to extinguish a fire.” He added: “It was a great night, with some of the Cubs expressing a wish to one day maybe becoming a firefighter!”

Club’s big project A BIRSTALL football club has launched an ambitious £100,000 project to refurbish its clubhouse. Birstall United Juniors want to build a new clubhouse at its Meadow Lane ground, with new changing rooms, referees’ facilities, toilets and a café with an outdoor seating area. “These are hugely exciting times for the club “ said coach Jon Sutton. “We’ve been at the heart of the community for many years, offering hundreds of children from as young as 4 right up to 18 opportunities to play football, be active and make friends, but for some time our clubhouse facilities have been in dire need of updating.” The club has received permission for its plans and now needs to secure funding. Jon said: “The club’s finances are relatively healthy, but for a project of this size external funding is essential. We have a major grant application under assessment with the Football Foundation and have been successful in gaining some funding from Charnwood and the Edith Murphy Trust. If any local companies could come forward to back us too, we would be delighted!” Birstall Parish Council have agreed to provide a grant of £2000, subject to the

club securing a grant from the Football Foundation. Jon said: “It’s not just money we need. The club is currently being run by a fairly small number of volunteers devoting a large amount of their time. We’re taking steps to spread that load by welcoming new people and expertise onto the committee. There are always opportunities, including just helping out for a few hours at our very successful community events – the tournament and bonfire party. “We’re really trying to take the club to the next level – for the children and for the community. He will be retiring from his secretary duties but will continue as groundsman.

My year as Mayor Groups offer support BIRSTALL’S DAVID Gaskell has just completed his year as Mayor of Charnwood and reflects below on some of the highlights which included meeting Prince Charles, visiting schools and watching his wife Jan drive a steam powered road roller.

TWO NEW support groups for the people of Birstall and surrounding villages have been launched by local cancer charity Birstall BAGs. “We are delighted to announce these new initiatives to support people living with cancer, caring for those who are living with cancer or for those who have suffered a loss caused by life limiting illness” said Rachael Boyall from Birstall BAGs. “BAGs are very aware that dealing with the psychological impact of cancer is just as hard if not harder than dealing with the physical affects. We also know from talking to people within the community that accessing support for this is quite difficult; either because the support simply isn’t available in the local vicinity or there is a long waiting list to access the necessary support.” The money that the local community has helped BAGs to raise will be used to fund two new support groups. The Mayflower Group will be a selfhelp group which will be led by Nicky Carling, an experienced Complementary Therapist and Counsellor. The sessions will provide the opportunity for people to learn coping strategies, to share worries and concerns with others in a similar situation to gain support and to learn techniques to relax the mind. There will also be opportunities for short one to one sessions. The group will run every 1st and 3rd Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 3rd July at Birstall Social Club in the newly refurbished private room upstairs. The session on the 1st Monday of the month will run from 2pm – 4pm and the session on the 3rd Monday of the month will run from 6.30pm – 8.30pm. A full list of dates is available on the BAGs website. The group will be limited to 12 people per session and places can be booked by calling : Nicky Carling on 07544 765091. Rachael said: “The sessions are free of charge and refreshments will be provided. If you have any mobility issues please let Nicky know when you call to book your place.” Birstall BAGs are also working in partnership with LOROS to provide a Bereavement Support Group which will run every other Wednesday afternoon

between 1pm – 3pm at Birstall Methodist Church from Wednesday June 28 onwards. The group aims to allow those who have been bereaved as a result of a life limiting or terminal illness such as Motor Neurone Disease, COPD, Heart Disease or cancer to share their experiences with others in a similar situation and gain support. The group will be led by trained bereavement volunteers. Places for the group will be limited to 8-10 people, this group can be accessed by calling LOROS Bereavement Support Services on 0116 231 8450 to self-refer, someone from the service will then call you back to confirm your place. Sessions are free of charge and refreshments will be provided. Rachael said: “We are very aware that mental wellbeing is vital to the recovery of those who have been affected by cancer or have suffered a loss. To be able to access these services on your doorstep without a long referral process and lengthy waiting times should make life a little easier for those people who are in need of some support. “These initiatives are a result of feedback from the community about what they need and would not have been possible without the support of our local community. BAGs continue to be overwhelmed by the ongoing and very generous support we receive, most recently from the Coop whose customers helped to raise £3640. “This generosity has allowed us to provide these support services to benefit the local community. We hope that these new support groups will provide help to those who need that bit of support to move forward with their lives.” Visit Birstall BAGs website www.birstallbags.co.uk for a list of dates for each support group. For more information on the Mayflower Group call Nicky on 07544 765091 or for information on the Bereavement Group call 0116 231 8450.

Choirs birthday concert

WI news BIRSTALL AND Wanlip WI met in May at their new venue, Elmfield Hall.

LOCAL CHOIR, Highcliffe Harmony, is celebrating its coming of age this year. The choir, which formed in April 1996, was made up of a group of parents whose children went to Highcliffe Primary School. “Their aim was simply to enjoy singing together to the highest standard that they could manage” said founder Carolyn Necklen. “With experience came improvement, and 21 years later, they have many successful concerts under their belts.” Over the years some members have moved on, whilst new members have been recruited from amongst friends, family and surrounding villages. The repertoire includes world music, folk songs, pop arrangements, gospel and spirituals. As part of their 21st birthday celebration they are putting on a joint concert with the choir from Sacred Heart Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School, whose MD is a member of the choir. Highcliffe Harmony is hoping that many past members will not only attend the concert but also come and take a small part, joining the current members to sing a couple of songs familiar to them from their time in the choir. The concert will take place at Sacred Heart School (Leicester) on Wednesday June 28 at 7pm. Carolyn said: “Whilst we have made every effort to track down past members to invite them along, there are some for whom we no longer have contact details. So, if you are a former member of Highcliffe Harmony and would like further details about joining in the celebration please contact me on 07790 891 380 or speak to a current member of the choir.”

Birstall coffee shop A BIRSTALL coffee shop needs volunteers to help it continue. The Methodist Church coffee shop on Wanlip Lane opened in 1980 and serves homemade cakes and scones, coffee and tea. It has always been run by volunteers. Spokesman Jackie Towell said: “All profits go to charity and over the years have gone to LOROS, Rainbows and for medical supplies to a clinic in the Gambia. “Volunteers always work in twos and

are asked to serve one morning a month and/or bake. “Help is urgently needed at present if we are to maintain our regular opening hours, 10am-12noon Tuesday to Friday. If you are interested please visit the Coffee Shop and talk to one of the volunteers. Pic: customers at the coffee shop

Running club round-up BIRSTALL RUNNING Club turned out in force at the Gaddesby 7 on Sunday May 21. Both John Orgill and Katie Cooper were 6th overall in the men’s and women’s draft results. This is a fantastic result for both of them, Katie puts her recent form down to speedwork. Captain Tristan Snutch said well done to all who ran, there were some great runs on a difficult course. Also Tim Tickner and Elisa Whittlestone received their winter League trophies at the previous race the West end 8. Next up is Birstall’s own Swithland 6 race on June 4 at Halstead Road Mountsorrel. Good luck to all who are running it. Fingers crossed for good weather. From Birstall Running Club

Highcliffe school’s summer fair THE ANNUAL Highcliffe school summer fair is just around the corner and this year's theme is a little more traditional! Not only that, but this year the opening time has been extended so you have more opportunity to enjoy all the fantastic activities. Of course, the popular stalls and games will be back. Who wouldn't relish the opportunity to soak a teacher? What about testing your strength - it's not as easy as it looks you know! This year there will also be some new and exciting games and entertainment. There will be everything you have come to enjoy at Highcliffe's summer fairs from the bouncy castles to delicious homemade cakes, BBQ, craft stalls, candy floss, ice cream, the list goes on...

We are 100 years old next year so we have formed a sub-committee to plan how we should mark this incredible Birthday and we are considering all members suggestions for different events. Our annual Coffee Morning was held on May 20 at the Methodist Church with our usual, wonderful, cakes, plants and crafts. Our speakers for the evening were Matron and two paupers who are National Trust volunteers from the workhouse at Southwell. They cleverly transported us back to the 1840’s with their ‘Tales from the Workhouse’. We had lots of entries for the competition ‘Your Oldest Photograph’ which was won by Jan Berry. For our next meeting on June 5 we will be celebrating our 99th Birthday with a meal at the Platform Café. Afterwards Roger Shelly, Head Curator of the GCR will talk to us about plans for the new museum. If you want to learn more about the WI we now have a web page on the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation website and a Facebook page with chat and photographs.

And this year, to tie in with the traditional theme, the school has been running a build your own scarecrow competition, with a top prize for the winning scarecrow of £45 cash donated by Cost Co. But the winner - well that's down to you. Voting will take place on the day itself. The Highcliffe summer fair is the biggest fundraising event of the year for the school - helped by the sale of raffle tickets - which this year again has a top prize of £100, plus many more, some of which have been some generously donated by local businesses, so a huge thank you to those businesses who always support us. The Highcliffe summer fair is on Saturday June 17 from 12 noon to 4pm with entrances on both the Greengate and Elmfield sides of the school. Entry is

still only 50p and for all primary age children and younger, entry is free. From Highcliffe School

Flower club BIRSTALL FLOWER Club were invited to create a flower arrangement in Leicester Cathedral. At their May meeting, 56 club members enjoyed a demonstration with the finished arrangements raffled off. On June 28 at 7.15pm Sandra Gunner will give a demonstration called ‘Magic Moments’. MANY PEOPLE who were present at St James on Sunday May 14 at St James will remember it as a highlight of the year. The Right Revd. Christopher Boyle, Assistant Bishop of the Leicester Diocese, came to preside at a baptism and confirmation service for 14 candidates from Birstall, Rothley, Thurmaston and Sileby. A packed church, which included the congregations of all 4 churches, supporting their local candidates, welcomed Bishop Christopher and contributed to an uplifting occasion. The delicious refreshments at the end of the service were also much appreciated! A new confirmation course will be starting on June 7 and anyone wishing to follow the course or to find out more, is invited to contact the rector, Vince Jupp, on 2674517 or curate, Anne Crosby on 07946 178087. Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Be Clear on Cancer Birstall BAG’s would like to give you a ‘ heads up’ on the next national Be Clear on Cancer campaign that will focus on respiratory symptoms. It will run across England from 18 May to 31 August 2017. Be Clear on Cancer aims to achieve earlier diagnosis of cancer by raising awareness of the signs and symptoms. The campaigns encourage people with relevant symptoms to see their GP without delay. Each campaign includes activity including television, radio, press, online and out-of-home advertising, and face-to-face events in shopping centres. The respiratory symptoms awareness campaign was the main national Be Clear on Cancer broadcast campaign for 2016. Advertising for the campaign will ran for longer than usual (14 weeks), with the aim of raising the overall impact on diseases such as lung (including cancer and COPD) and heart disease. Who is the campaign targeting? The campaign is aimed at men and women aged 50 and over, as well as

their key influencers, such as friends and family. People over 50 are most at risk of having an undiagnosed respiratory disease and make up 97% of lung cancer diagnoses. The key campaign messages will be: If you’ve had a cough for three weeks or more, tell your doctor If you get out of breath doing things you used to be able to do, tell your doctor With the following secondary messaging: Getting out of breath could be a sign of heart or lung disease, including cancer. Finding it early makes it more treatable, so don’t ignore it, tell your doctor A persistent cough could be a sign of lung disease, including cancer. Finding it early makes it more treatable, so don’t ignore it, tell your doctor. Chances are it’s nothing serious but if it is cancer finding it early makes it more treatable Don’t put getting out of breath down to something else e.g. getting older, being overweight or smoking Clearly if you are concerned about any of these issues make arrangements to visit your GP practice for advise and
