Boy with golden gloves A SIX year old boy from Mountsorrel has become the youngest ever member of Carl Gunns’ Birstall boxing gym to achieve a gold training certificate. Lui Sweeney has been attending the gym for a year. “He’s a quick learner” said Carl Gunns. “He’s a quiet boy, he listens to what you tell him and if he’s doing it wrong he puts it right. What he has achieved is outstanding.” Lui, a pupil at Mountsorrel primary school, says he likes sparring best. Mum Emma said: “Coming to the gym has given him confidence and a bit of discipline.”

Charnwood’s spokesman said: “When the landscaping works are satisfactorily completed, the land will be transferred to the Borough Council or its nominee”. This area will not be fenced off from the sports pitches next to the school. “It won’t be fenced because the community pitches and other open spaces are all public open space for general recreation, not part of the school” said the spokesman. Access to the park will be from Brockington Way, off Birstall Meadow Road.
Trees saved AN APPLICATION to fell two mature lime trees in Birstall’s Conservation Area have been refused by Charnwood. The Borough Council has protected the trees, located in the grounds of Grove House on Church Hill, by placing a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) on them. The applicant stated felling the trees was necessary because they were blocking and collapsing foul drains and causing a tripping hazard from a raised root plate. There is also possible internal stem decay. Seven local residents objected to the application, saying their removal would be detrimental to the appearance of the area and would remove wildlife habitat.

owned by Charnwood Borough Council and managed by developers Willmott Dixon under an agreement with the County Council that will continue until autumn 2018. After that the land will then be maintained by Charnwood. A spokesman for Charnwood Borough Council said: “There are no current plans to transfer the land, but we are seeking a third party, such as a local sports club, who may wish to take on the site. Consultation has taken place with the school, parish council and local sports clubs.” The second section of land is west of the school and the Harrowgate Drive playing fields, extending as far as the GCR railway line. It is owned and managed by developer Jelson, and designated as open space/parkland. Jelson’s plans show it will include some play equipment and multi use games area near to the Harrowgate Drive playing field.

There was a 100% pass rate with 85% of students achieving A*-C grades. In 2016 the pass rate was 95% with A*-C grades at 79%. This year 65% of students achieved an A*-B grade. Headteacher Jason Smith said: “We’ve seen a real improvement in the amount of students achieving the very best grades and gaining places in the top ranking universities. BAGS donation supports patients SUPPORTERS OF local cancer charity Birstall BAGS have helped to raise enough funds to purchase two new syringe pumps for local hospice, LOROS.
THE BIRSTALL POST SEP 2017
The £2,600 donation from Birstall BAGS paid for the much-needed syringe drivers which are small pumps that enable the safe administration of medication to patients who may find it difficult to swallow tablets. Jo Hyde, Head of Inpatient Services at LOROS, said: “We’re very grateful to Birstall BAGS for their kind donation. These syringes make it much easier for us to help patients to take their medication. The drugs that are administered with the pump are to control symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting, and so it’s really important that we can help patients with this medication.” Emma Shaw from Birstall BAGS said: “We were delighted to be able to provide the funding for the syringes. They will hopefully make a big difference to patients, making them comfortable and reducing their pain or discomfort when taking medication. We’d like to thank our supporters for their efforts in fundraising and attending our events – they have made this donation possible.” Birstall BAGS operates in and around Birstall and Leicestershire and seeks to

Sun shines (eventually) on village gala A ROUSING concert and firework finale brought Birstall’s annual gala to a close on Saturday August 5. A wet start had seen stallholders get drenched as they set up in the morning but to the relief of all, the sun came out at 4pm and visitors were able to enjoy the funfair, musical acts, stalls and activities, before gathering in front of the stage for the proms concert at 7.30pm. Comments on facebook included: “Lovely to see so many having a lovely day”; “Fab gala again this year, nice atmosphere”; “We danced in the rain under our brollies! Love the gala, already looking forward to next year”. The event is organised by Birstall Parish Council. Chair of the Events Committee Cllr Ed Marshall said: “I would like to thank those councillors, their families and all council staff for their invaluable support on Gala day. “Special thanks are also due to Sue, Wendy and Annie, our office staff, for the tireless work they do in organising this event. “Despite the atrocious weather conditions during the day the evening events, Proms in the Park and the long awaited fireworks went ahead and were enjoyed by those attending.”

Introduction of 30 hours FREE funding The Hunny Hive Day Nursery have been open since November 2016 and are pleased to announce that their team is expanding and the family of Hunny children and parents is growing rapidly. The children have settled superbly and are making rapid progress within their learning and development due to the rich, varied and imaginative experiences planned by the staff. Due to the introduction of the 30 hours free early education entitlement, the Hunny Hive have planned to open their large, purpose built preschool room to accommodate parents wanting to take advantage of the increased hours of funding. If you would like to know how you can check your eligibility for the 30 hours extended entitlement please contact Mel on 0116 2672039. The Hunny Hive are also proud to announce that they have listened to the feedback from their parents and the local community and they have decided to hold a holiday club for primary school aged children and an afterschool club from September 2017, picking up from the new Hallam Fields Primary School. The holiday club will consist of a range of fun, engaging activities and within the larger holidays will include trip days. A booking form will be available prior to the holiday to enable parents and children to see the range of activities on offer. The Hunny Hive would like to take this opportunity to thank their parents for their continued support and look forward to welcoming and supporting more children and families within Birstall and the neighbouring villages. Here are a few words from the Hunny Hive parents: “Very friendly staff and great environment for the boys, they love it!”
“My child has settled in amazingly and always gets excited when we get to the door in the morning. The staff are friendly!”
“Fantastic, clean, bright. Children are happy and the staff are approachable. Couldn't ask for a better setting for my child to be at. Hasn't cried ever”

Ellis Holdaway (15), a student at the Cedars Academy, Birstall, was one of seven riders from the Wenlo Riding for the Disabled Association stables attending the National RDA championships at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire. Ellis was the only rider from the Woodhouse Eaves based stables who was competing in the dressage freestyle event to music and was taking on riders from all over the country. He achieved the highest score to secure first place and become national champion. Ellis started riding when he was five years old and began riding with the RDA when he was diagnosed with ADHD/ASD. He said: “I like taking part in dressage, because I like the challenge and when I win it’s worth all the hard work.” Ellis rides every week and is a member of the Wenlo RDA young volunteers committee. Out and about It was a real pleasure a few weeks ago to go to the Cedar Mews Care Home summer fete in Hallam Fields to hear more about the work the home does, and to show my support for Dementia UK’s work, and their campaign to raise the money for Admiral Nurses. It was also great to attend the Burley Houses summer garden party, and am grateful to residents for their warm welcome; and to go to the Birstall Gala with Parish Council Chair, Ann Marshall – as always a great community event and a fantastic day out for everyone.
On a different topic, one local issue, which I have raised before, which the recent cloud-bursts have shown up is the state of the gullies that drain surface water from the roads in Birstall. Many of those I saw in School Lane and Birstall Road are completely full of earth with grass growing in some, meaning that any rainwater is unable to drain away, leading to pooling of water and localised flood risk on those roads. It is important that this problem is tackled before we get the autumn and winter rain, and I have taken the issue up with the County Council, who are responsible for keeping the drains clear. I am calling on LCC to inspect the gullies and arrange for blocked drains to be cleared out as soon as possible. When I receive the County Council’s response I will update readers of the Post, but hopefully we’ll see some progress in the near future. While I have met many of you at the local events above, I look forward to seeing many more of you in the village in the course of what remains of the summer, and in the meantime wish you a very pleasant, and hopefully sunnier, rest of the summer! Edward Argar MP Member of Parliament for Charnwood
Thanks A few words about a ‘wonderful’ man Pete Ingham who offered to plaster our ceiling free of charge at the Gunns family gym here in Birstall. We are a charity and he said because of the good work we do, there would be no charge. What a lovely gesture, cheers

Foxy feet I recently wrote about a slipper, left in my garden by a fox. It has not been claimed. I now have to ask if anyone in the Bramley Road area has found a right foot blue gardening clog, that the fox
took from my back door on Friday August 18. If it is not too badly chewed, I would like it back please. Stephanie Houlden (23 Bramley Rd)
Thanks The growing season is here for grass and bushes, we all know what that means, long grass and overhanging branches. The hedge line along the A6 close to the bus stop by Hallam Fields only gets trimmed once a year by the Council. This section of overgrown hedge line is difficult to pass as the footpath becomes shared with the cycle path. It is also narrowed off due to the bus pull in. During a conversation with
County Councillor Mr Iain Bentley, I mentioned the challenges passing along this area as the brambles often catch you and won't let go. This has caused shredding and ripping of clothing as well as umbrellas being damaged. It would also seem a problem for people with prams, pushchairs and those with mobility issues. Never mind the wrath of the cyclist who is often impatient. When I mentioned this to Councillor Bentley who said he was working in the area, a couple of days later when I walked past those nasty brambles had been cut back. It was easy to pass through this narrow footway. Thank you to Councillor Bentley, it is often the simplest things in life which makes our community a better place to live. Mrs Kristina Reynolds

volves people with dementia and volunteers doing things such as visiting the gym, walking or visiting places of interest together. There are 12000 people living with dementia in Leicestershire and 600 people with dementia in Rutland, and that number is expected to rise. The sad reality is that people with dementia can often become isolated and find it difficult to remain part of their community. Taking part in hobbies or activities they previously enjoyed can seem too difficult. This is what Side by Side aims to change. We currently have 36 volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland and we need to double that number. It's a flexible way to give your time and you really can make a huge difference to someone's life. Volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for expenses. Language So now it’s Gujarati in our village hall? That will come in useful in Tescos won’t it? As this is still, for the moment anyway, England, would it not be more appropriate to learn English, which is the language of the host nation? It would boost the confidence of immigrants to whom it is a second language. Mrs KL Reid
THE BIRSTALL POST SEP 2017
Santok Odedra from the charity Sahkar, organiser of the language classes, responds: The children learning the Gujarati language are third or even fourth generation Asians living in this country and are well aquainted with English language and the history of England. They are fully immersed in the British way of life. By encouraging our children to learn another language we expand their capacity for new knowledge, personal development and improve communication. We must note that when Sir Thomas Roe had presented his credentials to Moghal emperor Jahangir in 1615 he had spoken in Turkish language; and we are not aware of any language in England contributing negatively to the beautiful English language. Let me assure you that the children learning Gujarati will ensure England continues to prosper and may even learn about new products through Gujarati lessons which will perhaps help improve Tesco's profit margins too.

Cedars’ high achievers TWO PUPILS at The Cedars Academy achieved some of the highest GCSE grades in the country. Ella Fox (16) got 10 A*’s and 3 grade 9’s. By gaining three 9s, Ella is one of only 2050 pupils in the country to gain the top grades in the new harder Maths and English exams. She said: “I’m very surprised and very pleased.” Asked to give advice to any younger pupils, she said: “work hard and have fun when you can.” Ella wants to be an officer in the Royal Navy. Fellow Year 11 leaver, Evie Wilby (16) also achieved 10 A*’s including one 9 and two 8’s. She said: “I was really, really shocked. Birstall team compete in 24hr endurance race A TEAM from Birstall Running Club ran a total of 162 miles in 24 hours when they took part in the Conti Thunder run at Catton Park in Derbyshire.
Drug issues at car park
Spokeswoman Angie Budge said: “They managed to run 26 laps of 10k over the 24 hours, 15 of which were in a constant downpour making it extremely hard going underfoot in the mud. Despite the hard going they came 14th out of about 150 teams with over 3,000 runners reported to be there. An absolutely awesome team effort.” Recent achievements for club runners include Les Caldwell completing his hundredth parkrun, while Tim Tickner, Paul Gowdridge, John Orgill and Karl Headley were in the top nine- at the Joy Cann 5 on August 2. with Elisa Whittlestone, Lisa Spence, Hannah Askham and Kerrie Wilmott-Green counting for the ladies. Angie said: “With unofficial results from the Carl Rutt memorial 10k, Birstall men’s vet team look very likely to be promoted to division 2 and even a possible title so they will be all out at the next race in September at the John Fraser 10 mile.”

POLICE ARE aware of antisocial behaviour at the Watermead Country Park car park at the end of Meadow Lane. They have received reports of illegal drug use, drug dealing and drug paraphernalia left behind as litter. PC Dave Jaeckels said: “The car park in question does come under the Birstall & Wanlip beat and as such we do have responsibility for patrolling it. “We are aware that it does get used for illegal drug taking from time to time and as a beat team we do patrol the area fairly regularly, however we usually finish at either 10pm or 11pm at night and our suspicions are that the issues are occurring after that time. I myself have never caught anyone at the location abusing drugs and obviously if we ever did find anyone down there doing anything they shouldn’t be doing we would deal with it appropriately.” A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council said: “We work closely with the police in relation to any antisocial behaviour issues at the park. We also have staff on site. We would also encourage visitors to the park to be vigilant and report any concerns to the police.”

Birstall bake off urging you to get baking THE GREAT Birstall Bake Off is back this September and unlike similar shows, it hasn’t changed venues. The White House has hosted and helped organise the event for the last five years. Charlotte Foy from the White Horse said: “We have been so lucky over the last five years – yes, that’s correct FIVE years with the support we have had from our wonderful community with over £3620 for Macmillan Cancer Care and we would love to make this milestone year even more amazing.” Rebecca Kay, founder of the event said: “We have raised nearly £3700 for Macmillan since we first started the bake off and as always it would be great to do even better this year. It really doesn’t matter how experienced you are at baking we would just love you to enter – everyone that gets involved tells us how much fun they’ve had and it all makes a difference to the charity, and you never know you may win! We also really love entries from children so why not get the whole family in the kitchen with aprons and have your own family competition too? – wooden spoons at dawn!” The aim of the Great Birstall Bake Off is to get as many people as possible to make cakes, biscuits, pies, bread etc to sell at the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 24 at The White Horse, Birstall. To make it a bit more fun and add in some competition there are a selection of categories and people are asked to enter bakes in to one or more of these and bring to The White Horse on Saturday morning between 9am and 12noon on September 23. Multiple entries are very much encouraged. The categories are Cupcakes, Traybakes, Cakes, Biscuits, Savoury Bake, Bread, Free From, Best Decorated and Best Under 16. there is also a prize for the best in show. Charlotte added: “Lastly and most importantly – don’t forget ‘cake eaters’ are also needed too, so if your talents lie

Cedar Mews fete VISITORS TO a summer fete at the Cedar Mews care home in Birstall were able to tour the facility as well as enjoying the cakes and stalls. The event also hosted the launch of a new fundraising group in Charnwood that aims to raise £50,000 in one year for a specialist dementia nurse for the county. The Admiral Nurses for Leicestershire Group want to provide an Admiral nurse: they support people with dementia and their families giving them one-to-one support, guidance and
practical help. Gwyn Jones from Admiral Nurses for Leicestershire said: “Caring for a family member or friend with dementia can be devastating. The right help can prove the difference between coping and not coping. Dipa Vithlani, the new Instructor at the Kumon Leicester, Birstall Study Centre, says she is delighted to have the opportunity to share the Kumon Method of Learning with her local community. She said: “I have over ten years’ experience of working with young people in an educational setting. NHW news
& crime report I didn’t report it, it’s not worth it ! We hear this comment very often from residents in the village. Mostly in relation to ‘minor’ crimes such has damage but occasionally much more serious incidents and would you believe sometimes even burglary. If you would like to see a greater police presence in the area and a lower crime rate, (we all do), then all crimes should be reported as soon as possible. The police will respond to crimes. Maybe
not every incident will receive an immediate response, their work does need to be prioritised at times, but every reported incident is recorded and the information circulated to officers. These records cannot be ignored or removed and will be included in daily/weekly/monthly crime lists circulated to senior officers. A higher level of recorded incidents in an area will soon show up on these lists and receive a higher priority. Modern work practices which rely on computerised records unfortunately mean that very often it can be interpreted as ‘no reports from an area means no crime in that area’. If you do not report crimes and other incidents, you are letting down your friends and neighbours. How do I report a crime/incident ? a) If a crime is taking place (or the criminals are still in the area) or life is in danger, dial 999. b) To report crimes that have already taken place, dial 101. The 101 number is the non-emergency general number for the police. It can be
Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on August 14. County Councillor Iain Bentley reported that he had not received any feedback from residents supporting a County Council proposal to install a puffin pedestrian crossing on the A6 near the junction with School Lane. A member of the public thanked the council for organising the gala and commented on the poor condition of several empty shops in Birstall. Cllr Roy Rollings reported on a meeting he had had with Sgt Kirkpatrick regarding policing in the village. There had been increased patrols by Special Constables and a number of individuals had been stopped and searched. He said extending CCTV cameras in Birstall would be a helpful measure and that the Parish Council were best placed to implement this. It was reported that the Hallam Fields community hall project was at an early stage. Planning permission has been granted, subject to a number of conditions. The parish council’s project manager has produced a report which will be posted on the council’s website. The new building is expected to be completed in September 2018. It was agreed that the play areas on Hallam Fields be named after the street on which they are located, as are the existing playing fields. A noticeboard will be erected near the new community hall once it has been completed. Permission from Jelson to

erect another noticeboard off Birstall Meadow Road will be sought. Councillors considered a proposal from the County Council to install a puffin pedestrian crossing on the A6 near the junction with School Lane. Comment was made that the crossing was not needed at this location and that a better site would be on the A6 between Hermitage Road and Red Hill island. Charnwood Borough Council has published draft recommendations for its Community Governance Review, a review of local government boundaries. It has recommended that a narrow strip of land currently within the parish of Thurcaston and Cropston be transferred to Birstall. It is located south of the A46, between the GCR line and the Hallam fields development. The council agreed to request a map of the site, details of who owns the land and to be informed of any responsibilities regarding maintenance. Councillors discussed advice they have received regarding the recording of meetings by the public, press and councillors. Chairman Ann Marshall said the council had first sought advice from the Information Commissioners Office in January and that a definitive answer had not been received until June 15, when it had been distributed to councillors. Advice received is that the public, press and councillors can record meetings without giving notification. Councillors cannot record confidential meetings. Recordings made by councillors shouldn’t be kept for longer than is necessary and must be for an ‘appropriate use’. It was suggested that the advice received be set out as a policy for the purposes of clarification and distributed to all councillors. Cllr Julian Howe said he had never recorded confidential meetings and questioned why advice received in February that councillors could record open meetings had not been passed on at that time. Cllr Roy Rollings also questioned why councillors had to wait until now, when advice had been received in February. The chairman repeated that as soon as definitive advice had been received it had been passed to councillors. The chairman questioned whether a recording of an open meeting by Cllr Howe that was released to a political candidate before an election was an ‘appropriate use’.
used to leave messages for officers or for other general enquiries. At times it can be quite busy and there may be a delay in answering, but it will be answered. These two numbers are the only way to get crimes/incidents recorded. How can I speak to a local officer for advice ? a) Visit one of the monthly beat surgeries (third Saturday 10 – 12 at 10, Sibson Road) b) Dial 101 and leave a message (use their collar number for each officer or ask the operator to connect you). c) Try one of the numbers on the Watch membership card (these may not be answered) Please note that the Birstall Police room is not permanently manned and is not intended to be a public call point although it is worth trying this number. It must not be used to report crimes. Should I contact the Watch about crimes ? Report all crimes to the police first. The Watch is keen to give help and advice to residents on all matters related to crime. Although we get information on local crimes from the police, we would also like you to tell us about problems in local areas to enable us to engage with the police and other organisations to find solutions. We are also able to give worthwhile crime prevention advice. Please ring the Watch on 0116 2676397, this telephone is in a committee members home and not manned 24hrs, if not answered, please leave a message. From Birstall & Wanlip NHW
Crime update Reported crime for July fell slightly, with 54 crimes being reported compared to 70 in June. Thankfully we haven’t had any more vehicles damaged this month, however the number of thefts from vehicles has remained quite high, with 12 more being reported. We have also had 11 burglaries, however I am pleased to report that a female has been charged with 5 of these, all of which occurred on July 17. She has been remanded in custody whilst she awaits trial. As stated above, we haven’t had any more vehicles damaged in July which is obviously good news. As a result of all the incidents of vehicle damage last month the Beat team have conducted extensive investigations, including house to house enquiries and CCTV checks. We have also visited all of the youths who we know to have been out that night to speak to them about their involvement in the incidents. At this time we have unfortunately not been able to prosecute any of them in relation to the offences, however we are continuing to look into these incidents and if we are able to bring any charges against any of them we will do. The vast majority of the other crimes reported in July are ‘drive-off’s’ from the Petrol Station, of which we have had a total
of 8. These are often committed by people who first steal number plates and then attach them to their own car prior to filling up & driving away without paying for the fuel. Please consider fitting anti-theft screws to your own number plate to make it more difficult for the criminals to do this and avoid it happening to you. For further crime information please visit: www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL60/ Neighbourhood update The new barrier on the Sibson Road car park has now been installed & this appears to have reduced the number of issues in this area with cars parking up at night. We are still having some problems with noisy vehicles round the village including the Co-Op car park and the Hallam Fields Industrial estate & we are continuing to work with the relevant people to solve these issues. Surgery Winning team are champions ranking THE LADIES of St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club can truly claim to be champions after their team defeated Enderby in the County Unbadged Final held at Kingscroft at the end of July.
THE CHAIRMAN of the Birstall Medical Centre Patient Participation Group (PPG), has expressed his concern at the low ranking of the practice in the The ladies' captain , Pat Dobson said: GP Patient Survey reported in “It was almost unbearable. We had built up a fair lead early on but towards the last month's Birstall Post. Edmund Chambers said: “It is disappointing that patients expressed such poor satisfaction with the services provided and it is a matter that greatly concerns the PPG. It contrasts sharply with the Good in all Categories rating given by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in October last year.” He added: “The practice had been through a very difficult period, having been put into special measures by the CQC in September 2015. Since then, a completely new management team had been put in place and a lot of hard work had been done by them and the new partners to address the shortcomings identified by the CQC. This had led to necessary and significant changes to the way the practice operated. Many patients had found it disconcerting when they found things changed from the way they had been used to in the past. The
GP Patient Survey had taken place at the same time that these changes were occurring and, to some extent, the results may have reflected this confusion. “However, there is no reason for complacency, and the PPG has an important role to play in keeping the partners and managers aware of the issues that concern patients. We are always seeking views, concerns and ideas from patients, as well as new members for the Group. The greater the range of people involved, the more effective we can be in representing the voice of the patients to improve the services they receive.” Edmund can be contacted by email at bmcbd.ppg@yahoo.com or by phone on 07388 410129.

end we hit a bad patch and our lead seemed to be slipping away. With two ends to go, I was favouring Enderby to win. However, by some kind of miracle, we regained form on the remaining ends and we just managed to stave off the threat. It was a huge relief.” The final score, after 42 ends, played on two rinks, was 35 points to 31. In the earlier rounds of the competition, St Margaret's beat teams from Ibstock, Birstall - the closest match of all, winning by a margin of only one point and Hinckley. Pat said: “'It was a great day for our club to win this quality competition - a first for our club. I was

Council plans for new crossing A NEW traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing is planned for the A6 in Birstall, near to the junction with School Lane. Also planned is a new pedestrian refuge on the A6 between Oakfield Avenue and Firfield Avenue. This will be wider than the existing refuges, to accommodate push chairs and mobility scooters. The County Council say they also propose to upgrade the traffic signal equipment at the existing crossing near to Beechfield Avenue, and to refresh the existing road markings. The measures will be paid for by developers Jelson Ltd, as a consequence of a planning obligation associated with the Hallam Fields development. The proposals were put out to public consultation on August 4, with a closing date of August 25. At a meeting of Birstall Parish Council on August 14, councillors commented that the proposed location does not

Adventures in the wild west HIGHCLIFFE AMATEUR Theatrical Society’s next production has been written by two members of HATS, Phillip Walton and Elaine Hunt. ‘Paint the Town Red’ is an original script with a Wild West theme that will take you back to the days of the old westerns. “The cast has been having the best time ever rehearsing for this amazing original pantomime” said HATS spokeswoman Sue Withers. “Forget about the traditional pantomimes and let your imagination transport you back to the ‘Wild West’. “This is a pantomime full of adventure, action and fun, with
lots of different characters and some original songs too. “So what characters are you likely to see? No fairy godmothers I am afraid, no big bad wolf. You will be astounded at how clever the script writers have been in introducing characters to this play. Yes, there are some cowboys and saloon girls. But then, not forgetting this is a pantomime, there has to be some reference to Christmas doesn’t there. So look out for the unexpected characters, see how many different ones you
can spot. Never in your life would you expect to see the people you will meet in this production. So now I have set the scene, all you have to do is buy your tickers, sit back and enjoy the show. Don’t delay, book your tickets now.” Dates: Thurs Nov 23 and Fri Nov 24 at 7.15pm, Sat Nov 25 at 2.30pm & 6.45pm Doors open 30 mins before each performance Venue: Highcliffe Primary School, Birstall LE4 3DL Tickets £6, £5 concession, £20 family ticket Discounts for group bookings, price on enquiry Box Office: 0116 2216019, 07963432020 and 0116 2259122 Email: hatsbirstall@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/hatsamdram/

Sharon said: “Laughter Yoga? Is that a mix of stretching and body contortions done to the sound of laughter? You’d be forgiven for thinking this is the case but in actual fact Laughter Yoga is where we laugh for no reason. No comedy, no jokes, no humour just laughter for laughter’s sake. The yoga bit? Well that refers to the deep breathing exercises that we do alongside the laughter. “You know how good it feels to have a really great belly laugh, though you may not remember the last time you had such a laugh. The science confirms that laughter is good for us with many physical, emotional and social benefits such as the release of feel-good hormones which create a positive state of mind, boost optimism, self-confidence and self-worth as well as acting as a natural painkiller. Blood and all major organs are fully oxygenated leaving us bursting with energy and helping us to operate at peak performance. Our immune system is strengthened and cardio-vascular health promoted. Through laughter, depression and anxiety is lifted and if you need any more convincing then it also offers an anti-ageing formula by reducing wrinkles and toning and firming facial muscles. “Quite simply, laughter yoga is a fun and simple exercise for all age groupsanybody can do it!” The classes are held at Birstall Methodist Church from 6.30pm-7.30pm on Wednesdays. Classes resume after the summer holiday on September 6. For more information please contact Sharon on 07842 775880

The two defeats for the 1st XI has seen them slip from second to fifth in a very tight division. Sunil Lasata has been in form with both bat and ball but generally the batting has been inconsistent. Runs have been hard to come by for the 2nd XI but their record of seven wins and seven defeats leaves them comfortably placed in mid-table and with the two bottom sided still to play will be hoping for more victories. News from the churches FOR THE two churches of St. James the Great in Birstall and Our Lady and St Nicholas in Wanlip, September is starting with a fond farewell to our much-to-be-missed curate, Revd. Anne Crosby. Her departure on September 4 to Luton, to become the vicar of a parish there, was accompanied by a coachload of well-wishers from Leicestershire. We shall also very much miss Anne's husband Colin who has been a valued member of our community, in particular for his vast and entertaining knowledge of history when leading walks around Leicestershire, and we hope that both Anne and Colin will be happy in their new home. Our loss is Luton's gain! Maybe you are a keen walker or cyclist and have not heard of “Ride and Stride" day on Saturday September 9. If so, you might like to know that this is an annual event to raise money for the upkeep of historic churches throughout the country. You are encouraged to ask your friends to sponsor you to visit as many churches as possible in the one day, by cycling or walking (you can use the bus as well!). At each of the places you visit you will have a card signed, to prove to your sponsors you have been there in person. It can be a very interesting day out and you will have helped a very good cause. For more information please contact John Ward on 2677600. Thoughts of autumn are already in the air and the social committee are planning the first Film Night of the season for Friday October 13 at 7pm. The choice of film has yet to be made, but our regular film goers may like to put this date in their diaries. A nearer date to remember is Saturday September 23 when there will be a coffee morning at St. James (from 10am to noon) with music from the 663 Ensemble led by Cynthia Coltman. This event is to support Christian Aid and a local charity Mosaic, which helps the handicapped.

BIRSTALL AND Wanlip WI didn’t hold an August meeting but we were still active and on July 20 we organised a walk from Birstall to Abbey Park. It started in pouring rain and included a 20 minute detour due to flooding but we arrived at the park for our picnic in sunshine. It was great to be joined by WI ladies from Thurcaston, Astill Lodge and Newbold Verdon and various dogs. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. On July 24 we visited our adopted charity Gorse Hill City Farm and presented them with a cheque for £300. This was the result of our craft sales. We will have another craft stall at the Redhill Allotments Open Day on September 9 from 12 noon until 4 pm. As usual a summer coach trip was

New Methodist Preaching Plan Regular worshippers will have now seen the new Circuit Plan for the Trinity Circuit. Putting this together was no mean feat for Revd Dave Warnock who was responsible for trying to fill 360 services of worship with either a Minister or an accredited Local Preacher over the next quarter. He said “putting preachers I do not know into churches I do not know”. I gather Dave is relieved he won’t have sole responsibility for this task again as he steps down as Superintendant of the Leicester North Circuit as it is merged with Trinity Circuit. Despite Dave’s efforts there are still 23 occasions where the letters ‘LA’ appear. This means ‘Local Arrangement’’ Out of the 21 Churches, all have at least one ‘LA’ with the exception of Bishop Street, Christchurch in Clarendon Park, and Wesley Hall. For Birstall, the ‘Local Arrangement’ is on September 17. Sadly two names that do not appear on this new plan are Roger Wilson & Rosemary Kelham. They are both Birstall people, well known to regular worshippers. Both will be missed, but are in advancing years. Roger started preaching when he was still in his teens when his father, a Methodist Minister, heard at very short notice that a preacher had taken ill, and was due to take a service later that day at a small village chapel. Roger was sent on his bicycle to lead this service with virtually no opportunity to prepare. Fortunately there are four local Preachers in training at present who will go some way to redress the balance. Plans are available in the entrance foyer. Bring your apples and bottles As part of our Harvest Festival Weekend, we are using the Apple Press on Saturday September 30 between 10am & 12 noon, so do come along with your apples and empty bottles so that you can take away freshly squeezed apple juice. If you have a surplus of apples they can be left anytime after 24th September.

However, the Theses spread rapidly throughout Germany and then to the rest of Europe. It

was an event which is regarded as the start of the Reformation. The Swiss historian, Merle d’Aubigné, says: “The sole and infallible authority of the Word of God was the primary and fundamental principle of the Reformation.” Luther’s actions eventually led to the Bible being freely available for anyone to read in their own language and it has had a world-wide effect. The nearest commemorative event to Birstall is the lecture, entitled “God’s Volcano”, to be given on Thursday October 5 at 7.30pm by Pastor David Fielding from Derby. The meeting is hosted by Shepshed Word of Life Church, Kirkhill, LE12 9PA. The event is free and you are most welcome to attend. For further information about BIBC please ring 0116 2214883. Hedge cut back A TEAM from Bentley’s Garden Buildings stepped in to cut back an overgrown hedge that was blocking access. A resident on Saltersgate Drive contacted Birstall’s County Councillor Iain Bentley to report the problem hedge that was preventing them getting access to their rear windows. The County Council has responsibility for the hedge which runs beside the pavement on the A6 between the Greengate Medical Centre and the Saltersgate jitty, but they only trim the side facing the pavement. The team from Bentley’s Garden Buildings also cut back some shrubs at the A6/A46 service station island that were blocking visibility for motorists. Cllr Bentley said: “My approach is just get stuck in and get it done.”

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Radiotherapy About 4 out of 10 people with cancer (40%) have radiotherapy as part of their treatment and here Birstall BAG’s explain a little about what the treatment involves. Radiotherapy means the use of radiation, usually X-rays, to treat illness. It destroys the cancer cells in the treated area by damaging the DNA within the cells. Although normal cells are also affected by radiation, they are better at repairing themselves than the cancer cells. You can have radiotherapy externally (outside the body) or internally (from within the body: External radiotherapy, using X-rays from linear accelerator machines, electrons, and more rarely other particles such as protons Internal radiotherapy, by drinking a liquid that is taken up by cancer cells or by putting radioactive material in, or close to, the tumour. The full dose of radiation is usually divided into a number of smaller doses called fractions. This allows healthy cells to recover between treatments. Radiotherapy to relieve cancer symp-

toms, such as pain, is called palliative radiotherapy. You often have this in fewer fractions and sometimes it is just one treatment. The radiotherapy dose with each fraction is bigger but you have fewer fractions so the overall radiotherapy dose is lower. When deciding on your course of treatment your health care team take into account: • your type of cancer • the position of the cancer in the body • any other treatment you've had, are having, or is planned for you • your general health and fitness This means that your treatment will be individual to you. A course of radiotherapy aimed at curing cancer usually lasts between 1 to 6 weeks but may be longer than this. Your doctor will tell you how long your treatment will take. Many people have daily treatment from Monday to Friday, with a rest at weekends. Others have different treatment plans, such as 3 days a week, or treatment 2 to 3 times a day, including at weekends. The radiotherapy staff try to give you appointments for the same time each day so that you can get into a routine. External Radiotherapy There are different types of external radiotherapy treatment, which include • conformal radiotherapy • intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) • image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) • 4-dimensional radiotherapy (4DRT) • stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery • proton therapy • electron beam radiotherapy • adaptive radiotherapy
External radiotherapy doesn't make you radioactive. It is safe to be with other people, including children, throughout your treatment. People react to radiotherapy in different ways: • some carry on working and just take time off for their treatment • others feel tired and want to stay at home • some people stay in hospital for all or part of the treatment • there are different types of internal radiotherapy treatments. Different types are used for different types of cancer. Internal Radiotherapy Internal radiotherapy gives radiation from inside the body. Some types use radioactive liquids as a capsule or drink. Others are injected into a vein. Some types are called brachytherapy and they use radioactive metal put inside the body close to the area of the cancer. After your radiotherapy When your radiotherapy treatment ends your treatment team will give you advice and information about your recovery. The treatment team will tell you how to look after the radiotherapy area and about how to cope with any possible side effects. They will also give you a number to call in case you have questions or worries. Follow up appointments will vary depending on the treatment you have received.
